What better way to kick-off the festive season than welcoming back one of Calstock Arts’ favourites. Described as “the piano man’s piano man” and “a national treasure” (Jazz Journal magazine), Dale’s musical journey has brought him recognition as the UK’s leading exponent of New Orleans-style boogie woogie and blues piano. Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster ride of the music and tales of the great New Orleans piano players, inter-laced with some familiar Christmassy tunes given the New Orleans ‘treatment’.
Inspired by his parents’ collection of early Rhythm n’ Blues and Rock n’ Roll records, the evocative music of New Orleans quickly became a passion for the young pianist, immersing himself in the styles of such luminaries as Dr. John, James Booker, Professor Longhair and Fats Domino. Later, while studying piano in Sheffield, he established himself as a highly sought-after pianist backing many top blues stars from the U.K. and America. “A very, very fine piano player indeed.” (Paul Jones, musician & Radio 2 presenter).
“Incredible, never seen anybody play like that, only James Booker.”
(British Blues Legend – Victor Box)
Since going solo in 2008 and presenting his now acclaimed ‘Sounds of New Orleans’ show, Dale has wowed audiences across the UK and Europe, mostly recently at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, with intoxicating piano mastery and vocals, as well as sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of the ‘Crescent City’. Dale draws in the audience with the rich history behind the music, telling the often risqué stories of his beloved piano heroes.
“If there is a better New Orleans-style pianist in the UK than the outrageously talented Dale Storr, please point me in his or her direction because he or she must be very, very special.” (Blues In Britain)
