SUMMARY:10 April: Angeline Morrison
DESCRIPTION:Angeline is one of the freshest voices in English folk music today\, celebrated for her soulful\, resonant voice\, evocative songwriting\, and deeply affecting performances. Her artistry has earned standing ovations on stages large and small\, with Mojo ranking her #5 among key voices of 2023. \nA singer\, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter\, Angeline’s music explores ordinary lives with reverence and curiosity. Accompanying herself on autoharp\, dulcimer\, and mbira\, or singing unaccompanied\, she delivers performances that linger long in memory. The Birmingham born-musician has lived in Cornwall for many years\, where she is an active figure in the local music scene.  \nHer groundbreaking album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience\, released on Topic Records\, illuminated the often-overlooked Black British presence within the folk canon. Hailed as The Guardian’s Folk Album of the Year\, it spent 15 weeks in the Top 40 Official Folk Albums Chart and is described by Angeline as a re-storying and a gift to forgotten Black ancestors and today’s folk community. \nIn recent years\, Angeline has performed at major festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Sidmouth\, and End of the Road\, and made her TV debut on Later With Jools Holland during Black History Month 2022\, singing Unknown African Boy. She is also sought after for radio appearances on BBC Radio 2\, Radio 3\, Radio 4 and Radio 6 Music. \nAngeline’s diverse influences span folk\, soul and other genres\, having performed in projects like The Mighty Sceptres and Rowan: Morrison. Currently\, she records and tours with her band and collaborators. The symposium bridges the gap between academic research and public action. You will hear from leading experts like Norman Carreck and Dr Ollie Visick on the latest global threats to bees\, the unique genetic importance of wild colonies\, and the practical limitations they face in finding nest sites. The session will then shift from theory to practice\, showcasing the groundbreaking citizen science project from the University of Plymouth\, which invites the public to actively participate in locating and monitoring these free-living populations. The afternoon will feature real-world case studies in conservation and biosecurity from the Isles of Scilly and Blenheim Palace\, culminating in an open roundtable discussion to brainstorm how the community can directly support ongoing research. \nKey Takeaway  \nThe major takeaway is to send everyone away with a clear idea of how they are going to spread the word about the University of Plymouth’s free-living honey bee research within their own communities and networks. Wild honey bee colonies still occur across South West England! \nUniversity of Plymouth are mapping these colonies and collecting samples to reveal their genetic origin. \n  \nDr Ollie Visick is encouraging people to report free-living colonies on the Honey Bee Watch mapping platform.  \nhttps://app.honeybeewatch.com/   \n  \nDelegates can also report nest locations directly to Dr Ollie Visick via oliver.visick@plymouth.ac.uk or the Facebook page  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582743947629 \nThe Symposium on Saturday 11th April is preceded by half a day outdoors at Newton Farm\, Metherell as follows:- \n  \nFriday 10th April – Newton Farm – Farm tour. \ncontact Andrew Brown andrew@aglbrown.co.uk for further details and an invitation. \n  \n14:00 – 16:00 \nThe farm tour will cover wildflower meadow creation\, a hedge laying demonstration\, wetland creation\, orchard creation and conservation grazing.  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Dv9i4wNAq/  \n  \n16:00 -18:00 \nFilipe Salbany (Blenheim Palace) and Matthew Somerville (Bee Kind Hives) will demonstrate the installation of a log hive and a rocket hive. \nThis demonstration might help with the question: “are free-living honey bees limited by nest sites and what can we do to mimic ancient woodlands and their veteran trees?” \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h6K_cS0m_w  \n  \n  \nKey Takeaways  \n  \nGuests should expect to observe a multitude of actions designed to increase biodiversity and contribute to nature recovery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:15 May: Nick Harper @1930
DESCRIPTION:Join Nick Harper as he tours his new album\, ‘58 Fordwych Rd.‘ \nIt is nothing short of criminal\, that Nick Harper is one the UK’s best kept musical secrets. Those who have witnessed the spellbinding\, one-man show will tell you this. A childhood growing up surrounded by the musical prowess of some of the 60’s most revered songwriters & musicians\, not to mention being son of Roy Harper\, along with 20 years of crafting songs & touring the land has spawned a truly one-off\, original guitarist & songwriter who stands alone as a UK great\, to be cherished & revered. \nFollowing a prolific creative chapter that has seen three studio releases since 2020\, Nick returns to the setting of his father’s living room in a small flat in Kilburn\, London in the mid 1960s ‘58 Fordwych Rd.‘. The flat was an after hours hang-out for the legends who played at Les Cousins in Soho at the height of the acoustic explosion in swingin’ sixties London. People like Bert Jansch\, Davy Graham\, John Renbourn\, Paul Simon\, Marc Bolan\, Sandy Denny & others dropped in\, to drop out\, jam & try new tunes. But\, all along\, there was someone else there… a toddler\, part of the family\, inhaling the music & absorbing the vibe; Roy’s young son\, Nick Harper. \nMany moons later\, Nick invited these acoustic legends back into the room and toured this unique story to ecstatic receptions across the UK and Ireland. Wary to not just entertain as a tribute\, the  craftsmanship and care of the repertoire Nick was handling was beyond tribute\, Nick applying his  own twists and deft performance swagger that only those who’ve earned their stripes possess.  During a week-long residency at Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, where the show picked up an EDFringe Award for best music\, ‘58 Fordwych Rd.’ was recorded\, capturing Nick at the height of performance prowess.. \nFast forward to 2025 and Nick found himself alongside Roy Harper headlining Glastonbury Festival and providing sideman duties at a trilogy of farewell concert hall shows. The narrative of ‘58 Fordwych Rd.’ continues to reverberate and so the live album of the same name had to see a release. We welcome the Bristol-based duo Eastern Strings of Daphna Sadeh-Neu (double bass) and Knud Stüwe (oud) for their first performance at the Old Chapel. Their instrumental music is distinctive and exquisite\, drawing together a tapestry of musical culture from across the Middle East and their performances combine world music energy with classical precision and characterful improvisations. They will be joined by special guest\, Özcan Ateş\, vocalist and master of the ear-catching traditional bağlama\, a seven-stringed\, long-necked lute central to Turkish and Kurdish folk traditions. His playing is intense and musically enriching and his vocals are lyrical\, emotional and poignant. The trio’s performances of an eclectic mix of Kurdish\, Turkish\, Ladino and Middle Eastern traditional songs and music have been described as visceral\, evocative and full of surprise. Immerse yourself in these sumptuous worldly musical delights expertly plucked and sung by the ensemble in this\, the finale of Calstock Arts’ journey around ‘Our Music Planet’. \nHave a listen: https://youtu.be/2wY87UTTQGo?si=9jE7EwltDVCOefSt \nMiddle Eastern music refers to the music of the various countries and cultures in the Middle East region\, including countries such as Egypt\, Turkey\, Iran\, Lebanon\, amongst many others. It is a diverse and rich musical tradition that has been influenced by various cultures and civilisations throughout history. The music is known for its unique scales\, rhythms\, and instruments. One of its most distinctive features is the use of maqamat (‘ascents’)\, melodic modes or scales that are used as the basis for composition and improvisation. Middle Eastern music has evolved over time and has become globally more accessible via digital platforms\, but despite external influences it continues to be a vibrant and dynamic musical tradition that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region. \n  \nDaphna Sadeh-Neu is an acclaimed double bassist\, composer and artistic director. She has released 5 albums on major UK and US labels and has received commissions to compose for both small ensembles and full orchestra in a style that crosses genres including world music\, Baroque and jazz. Daphna has performed internationally in Europe\, Asia and the USA\, and her music and playing has featured on BBC Radio 3\, and in Songlines and Strad magazines. She also teaches double bass and gives workshops at Bristol University\, SOAS University of London and Cambridge University. \nKnud Stüwe is a musician\, composer and arranger and is fast establishing himself as a unique and brilliant voice on the oud. He draws inspiration from a wide range of influences such as Middle Eastern music\, Jazz\, Tango and the Classical repertoire. Recent projects include ‘Sounds of Sudan’ a collaboration between the oud duo Nabra and the Ligeti String quartet and a WNO songwriting project with refugees. He is also the musical director of the Bristol Mandolin and Guitar ensemble\, an enthusiastic amateur plucked string orchestra. \nÖzcan Ateş was born in Istanbul and started playing the bağlama at a young age. While his musical journey began in Turkey\, he has become more active since settling in Bristol. He is a rare master of the bağlama\, performing traditional Turkish and Kurdish folk songs as well as his own compositions across the UK. Music is his way of expressing emotions\, telling stories\, and preserving culture. He believes in its power to connect people and strives to blend tradition with modern influences. He is a unique voice in the UK’s world music landscape. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:20 June: Cara Dillon
DESCRIPTION:Few voices linger in the soul like Cara Dillon’s. A towering figure in Irish music\, she has earned global acclaim and countless awards\, including the Meteor Award for Best Irish Female and four BBC Folk Awards. For close to 30 years\, she has occupied a singular space in folk music. Her voice—deceptively delicate yet emotionally devastating—evokes something timeless and elemental.\n\nCentral to her remarkable career is her husband and collaborator\, Sam Lakeman\, whose role as composer\, producer\, and performer has been pivotal in shaping Dillon’s sound. Their intimate live shows feature acoustic sets drawn from her extensive discography. Classics like “Black Is the Colour” and “The Parting Glass” appear alongside new material from ‘Coming Home’\, her landmark 2024 release\, which seamlessly weaves spoken word and song in a profound meditation on identity and emotion.\n\nFrom her early days in Óige and De Dannan\, through the major-label corridors of Warners and Rough Trade\, her music has travelled far beyond folk’s usual borders and continues to defy boundaries—from chart-topping remixes\, Disney soundtracks\, to the hit TV series Derry Girls. As Mojo magazine once wrote\, Dillon possesses “quite possibly the world’s most beautiful female voice.” With ‘Coming Home’\, she affirms that legacy—not simply as a singer\, but as a storyteller of rare emotional depth; her voice\, as always\, lingers long after the last note fades.

It comprises dramatic tales from Celtic Lands\, told in words and music\, with harp violin and concertina. \nMike and Barbara are not only great storytellers and musicians\, they are also both accomplished offshore sailors. In this show\, their tales are set on the sea\, in the sea\, and beside the sea. They are rich with insight. They are engaging\, exciting\, moving and amusing. She is the expert on costume and custom\, and with Mike\, has worked to integrate words\, sound effects and music to high praise. \nMike and Barbara’s “Return to Lyonesse” won a British Award for Storytelling Excellence and “Odysseus Dreaming” was an acclaimed retelling of Homer.

SUMMARY:23 July Blue - Joni Mitchell Sung by Mae Karthauser
DESCRIPTION:“I was utterly blown away… an absolute emotional rollercoaster..magical” Amy \n“In all my years I have never cried at a gig. I was crying on the first song” Martin \nSongwriter Mae Karthauser is lending her voice to a breathtaking new live performance: a heart wrenching tribute to Joni Mitchell’s seminal album Blue. \nMae will be performing the entire Blue album\, plus nine other Joni favourites from her early songwriting era. \nMae\, who has performed at Glastonbury Festival\, on prime-time BBC1 and on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 6\, identified Joni Mitchell as the first and most influential songwriter she discovered as a teenager\, and was called to delve into recreating the album as a live performance when approached by friend and guitarist Rowland O’Connor at the end of a gig back in 2025. “Who’s album would you most like to recreate?” he asked. Unprompted\, they both came up with the same answer. \n“Joni Mitchell’s songs feel like dreams\, like journeys off somewhere deep and familiar” says Mae. “It’s great to go beyond memorising and really into the magic\, the poetry and the stunning emotional landscapes Joni is able to conjure with her songwriting” \nBreathing new life into the 1971 classic\, Mae’s silken and athletic vocals soar nimbly over Joni’s melodies\, and paired with her expressive piano playing she brings a raw and living presence to these timeless songs. Mae is joined by regular collaborators Rowland O’Connor on guitar\, bass and Appalacian dulcimer\, Ric Byer on drums and Tess Broach on backing vocals. \n<https://youtu.be/d5ZfcJB2_mQ>

SUMMARY:11 October: Lantivet Duo
DESCRIPTION:The Lantivet Duo is Cornish violinist Anna Brigham and Scottish pianist Brendan Musk. They bring a fresh\, contemporary approach to the violin and piano duo\, combining excellence in performing traditional repertoire with writing their own music. At the heart of their collaboration is the desire to explore. Their roots in classical\, folk\, jazz\, pop and funk music combined with boundless creativity have earned them critical acclaim\, with Classic FM hailing them as “one of the best things to see.” Together\, they captivate audiences with a spellbinding blend of traditional and original pieces. \nTheir exceptional programming is completely unique and has been described as “genuinely original and exploratory”. The duo take a concept or a classical work and explode it outwards\, exploring deep into what inspired the composer and using it as inspiration for their own music. Contemporary folk traditions\, family life\, environment\, personal obsessions – there are so many influences in any composer’s work. Using this as a jumping off point\, the duo write their own music and arrange traditional folk tunes\, which when paired with the classical work\, reflects back to create a deeper\, richer experience of the piece. \nIndividually\, Anna and Brendan have thriving freelance careers. They perform with world-class orchestras\, chamber groups\, and artists such as the Philharmonia\, Dunedin Consort\, and Bjork\, have headlined at prestigious festivals\, and appeared at venues like the Royal Albert Hall\, the Wigmore Hall\, and Ronnie Scotts. As a duo\, they have delighted audiences throughout the UK and performed for the Spanish Embassy. Outside of the concert hall\, they are particularly proud of their Summer Garden Concert Series\, now in its fourth year\, which brings music to intimate and unique settings. They are very excited to have released their debut album in 2025. \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/vT53Fjap7h4

DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the return of the highly accomplished local harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry\, for what will be an enchanting concert. As a recitalist\, she is well-known for her warm and approachable presentation style. The Bath Chronicle said of her: “It is hard to say just which was more pleasurable – the exquisite playing or the often deliciously outrageous stories of composers’ lives that Elizabeth Jane recounted in between the music.” She performs both nationally and internationally\, giving around eighty performances a year from recitals in historic houses or specialist arts cruises to weddings and funerals. She has performed to sold-out audiences in the USA\, Italy and France. \nElizabeth-Jane fell in love with the harp as a little girl whilst reading fairy-tales in which the harp possessed magical powers! She grew up to study at Exeter University and the Royal College of Music\, and has been a full-time professional musician for over thirty years. As well as performing recitals\, she is the only specialist silent movie harpist in the world\, playing live to cinema screenings of early film\, and has won multiple awards for her silent film accompaniments and compositions. Her uniquely rich tone on the harp has graced film and TV soundtracks screened in over thirty countries including Canada\, Iceland\, Kenya\, Iran and South Africa. Her compositions have been used by ITV\, the BBC and by Irish\, Japanese\, Danish and Canadian film\, radio and television. \nA life-long lover of nature\, Elizabeth-Jane lives in the Dartmoor National Park. In her spare time\, she loves growing trees and creating a magical woodland where she can brew tea in a twig kettle\, keep bees and listen to birdsong. Sometimes she gets up on Sunday mornings early enough to sing in the church choir. Her tiny granite cottage is full of music\, books and harps\, and the kettle is always on for friends. \n“She is a great artist and consummate performer. She can draw more tone colours out of the instrument than any other harpist living in the world today.” David Watkins\, Professor of Harp\, Guildhall School of Music \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/XgcPT3ZR2JM?si=7pNtngm_kCm4qZyH
