SUMMARY:29 May: CANCELLED Hugh Warwick Killing in the name of Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Apologies but this event has had to be cancelled – all ticket holders will be refunded. \nHugh will be returning to Calstock Arts\, after his sold out talk in 2023\, to share his thoughts on the complex issues that confront conservationists – so many decisions revolve around the choice of which animal to kill … and whether we have a right – or even responsibility – to ‘play god’. \n  \nDespite the subject\, there is lightness – even some humour – but\, no easy answers. Come prepared to be challenged! \n  \nCull of the Wild –  Killing in the Name of Conservation\, is the latest book from Hugh Warwick.  George Monbiot describes it as ‘Fascinating\, intelligent and indispensable.’ Kate Bradbury says it is ‘the perfect introduction to the darker side of conservation which Hugh Warwick explains with reverence and humour.’ And Chris Packham\, ‘Hugh Warwick employs honest and intelligent questioning in a fruitful\, fascinating exploration of one of the skeletons in conservation’s cupboard.’ \n

SUMMARY:2 May: The Prophecy Of Merlin: A Cornish Tale set to Music
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to an hour of fast-moving oral storytelling and achingly beautiful music; an epic adventure story by Mike O’Connor and Barbara Griggs. After the story there will be a break followed by a 45 minute talk on the history and folklore behind it. \nThe original Prophecy of Merlin was a Cornish-language document of the 11th century or earlier\, now lost. It was the basis of the Prophetia Merlini of about 1153 written by John of Cornwall\, a priest from St Germans in Cornwall. In cryptic language\, John criticised Saxon and Norman incomers and advocated British rule. The main historical sources for the tale are Merlin in Cornwall\, a Ph.D. thesis by Michael A. Faletra\, and Julyan Holmes’ An Dhargan a Verdhin: The Prophecy of Merlin. Athelstan’s ‘cleansing’ of the Cornish from Devon was recorded by William of Malmesbury in his De Gestis Regum Anglorum of 1125. \nMusic is integral to the tale and is exquisitely dovetailed into the performance. Melodies are linked with principal characters and events. Music supports action\, mood\, and emotion. An Dhargan\, Yn Termyn eus Passyes\, Dons Rys an Kam\, Kan Pibough Sagh\, Kri Bran\, Ilow Kosk\, and An Dasserghyans are by Barbara. Kynvan Bran and Medhel an Gwyns are by Mike. Kan an Alwedh is a unique tune from the time of John of Cornwall\, possibly from St Germans. \nSince the bronze-age\, bards have declaimed battle honours\, genealogies\, histories\, and stories\, both to entertain and also to endorse the positions of their rulers. By camp-fires and hearths\, families told tales to entertain and educate both adults and children. As late as the 19th century\, travelling storytellers in Cornwall told tales in return for bed and board. \nMike O’Connor OBE is a well-known storyteller\, with a deep knowledge of legend and folk tale\, and great skill with language. A bard of Gorsedh Kernow\, he is respected as a violinist\, songwriter\, and musicologist\, and known to many for his music for TV’s Poldark. He is responsible for the musicology\, folklore and history behind this tale. \nBarbara Griggs is a skilled and sensitive musician\, and a fine storyteller. She too is a bard as well as being a Gorsedh harpist. Her music has been described as having ‘breath-taking beauty.’ She is the expert on costume and custom\, and with Mike\, has worked to integrate words\, sound effects and music to high praise. \nMike and Barbara’s Return to Lyonesse won a British Award for Storytelling Excellence and Odysseus Dreaming was an acclaimed retelling of Homer.

DESCRIPTION:If you have ever watched Jools Holland seeing in the New Year on BBC2\, right at the front of the band is Derek Nash on alto sax. He is one of the UK’s top players and is joining another in South West\, tenor sax star Martin Dale and his Quartet. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled to welcome Derek\, Martin and the trio back to the Old Chapel for another evening of fabulous entertainment. \nDerek’s long relationship with Martin started with Be Bop star John Burch’s Kentish Octet\, where they performed\, toured and recorded together many times.  Their swinging bravado\, showmanship and humour join together for a superb evening of Jazz standards in a style that remembers great sparring Saxophone heroes like Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes\, or Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. \nDerek is a full time member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 2004\, has led Sax Appeal for over forty years\, leads his award winning Acoustic Quartet\, fronts the funk/fusion band Protect the Beat\, the Latin band Picante\, the “The Wonder of Stevie” show and is a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion. He is renowned for his energetic\, vibrant\, passionate and charismatic performances on all four saxophones from sonorous baritone to soaring soprano. \n“…bravura display of contemporary saxophone” The Observer \n“…breathtaking” The Sunday Times \n“From smooth cool to groovy funk\, to ingeniously recast standards…the music fizzes with energy…***** “ The Observer \nThe Martin Dale Quartet (MDQ) is a long established West Country based band\, featuring Martin (tenor sax) Gavin Martin (piano)\, Kevin Sanders (bass) and Dennis Harris (drums). \nMartin has been a full time musician since he was 16 when he joined the Royal Marines Band Service. He studied jazz saxophone at the Guildhall school of music during his time in the service. He has played with most of the UK’s leading jazz musicians and toured with the Jack Bruce Blues Band. He plays in the style of his 3 favourite tenors\, Hayes\, Scott and his close friend Dick Morris set. \nGavin Martin has been MDQ’s regular piano player for quite a few years now\, he also had  full career in the band Service playing trumpet and piano. Also eager to learn more tunes he has become an accomplished jazz player and great accompanist. He plays with a few West Country bands and also teaches music in a local academy. \nKevin Sanders is a long standing member of the quartet and is one of the most in demand bass players in the S.West. He has a wealth of knowledge\, and you can rarely catch him out when you “call a tune “. A fine player and he also writes for a very popular Bass magazine. \nDennis Harris is the longest serving member of the quartet\, he has been with the band since the very beginning and still “swings like the clappers “; not too busy just a good old “proper groover”\, which suits the MDQ perfectly.

SUMMARY:20 March Guy Singh- Watson @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:The Crisis in British Farming \nBritish Farming is on its knees\, climate change\, labour shortages and the uncertain government support are three of the numerous factors not helping. But the main issue is that farmers cannot survive the prices\, trading terms and insecurity imposed on them by the Big Six supermarkets. Many farmers have already called it a day and many are in crisis. 61% of farmers fear they will go bust in the next 18 months. Guy will explain the issues and his campaign to try to improve the lot of the farmer. \nGuy is an inspirational\, passionate\, opinionated and admired figure in the world of organic farming\, who still spends more time in the fields than in the boardroom. Twice awarded BBC Radio 4 Farmer of the Year\, Guy is passionate about sharing with others the organic farming and business knowledge he has accumulated over the last three decades. \nGuy has always seen profit as a means not an end. Rejecting numerous investor approaches\, Guy always vowed not to allow Riverford to become an enterprise driven purely by the bottom line\, or controlled by outside investors. \nHe stuck to his word\, and on June 8th 2018\, sold 74% of Riverford to its employees at about a quarter of the market value. In May 2023\, he sold his remaining shares\, making Riverford 100% employee owned. \nGuy continues to play a very active role in the next phase of Riverford’s journey. He wants to prove that business can be a force for good\, and is confident that staff ownership will protect and develop Riverford’s model of sustainable food production and lock in place the values on which the business was founded. \n* All Guys fee for the event will go to the charity Ripple Effect https://rippleeffect.org/get-involved/partner-with-us/corporate-partnerships/riverford-and-ripple-effect-farmers-supporting-farmers

SUMMARY:14 March: Kerdroya\, the Cornish Hedge with music from the Dalla Duo @ 1930 rescheduled date
DESCRIPTION:Kerdroya\, the Cornish Landscape Labyrinth\, is a work of Slow Art. \nThe Classical Labyrinth icon is a 4\,000-year-old visual symbol found across the proto-Celtic world and beyond\, inviting the pilgrim along its meditative pathway. \nCornish Hedges are the oldest structures on the planet still in use for their original function\, an ecologically benevolent craft handed down aurally through countless generations. \nIn the middle of Bodmin Moor\, Kerdroya entwines these two ancient cultural phenomena and launches them into the future as a beacon of hope for those yet to come. \nBegin the evening with live Cornish music from ‘Dalla Duo’ who created the gorgeous soundtrack for the film. \nFinish the evening with a Q&A session with Will Coleman (Artistic Director)\, Gemma Gilbert (Filmmaker) and Leighton Paull (Cornish Hedger). \nWatch a trailer for the film here

We look forward to two one hours sets with these five local seasoned musicians from Launceston. \nIt’s difficult to find a musical genre that would fully describe The Countrymen\, but Folk Rock Harmony comes close. A five-piece band featuring tight four-part vocal harmony and strong instrumentation. \nPrimarily performing original songs and their own arrangements of lesser-known contemporary folk\, the band’s lyrical inspiration is drawn from life in Cornwall\, the demise of local industries and other rural issues that resonate throughout the country. These include Little Orchard Festival\, Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, Falmouth Oyster Festival and Falmouth Week. \n“These guys are really entertaining. SUMMARY:2 March: Marcelo Montes @ 3.30
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are pleased to welcome to The Old Chapel\, Marcelo Montes a young virtuoso pianist from southern Portugal. \nHis playing is both exhilaratingly close to the edge and elegantly tender\, captivating and astounding audiences wherever he plays with an amazing repertoire (e.g. Bach\, Chopin\, Liszt\, Rachmaninov……). His focus and dedication are both incredible and inspiring. To be immersed in his playing is truly magical. Simply\, Marcelo is a musically imaginative and technical maestro of the piano. \nMarcelo is 33yrs old and lives in the Portuguese countryside 20km from the town of Tavira with his aunt’s family and his grandmother who is 100 years old. There are only 2 buses a day\, one in the morning and one returning in the evening. Most days he commutes to the Ingreja da Misericodia in the centre of Tavira where he practices and composes music on the church’s Bechstein grand piano. Next to the piano there is a donation box\, and visitors can listen to him play for as long as they like. Marcelo includes many Portuguese composers in his repertoire\, and on occasion\, he performs their music along with his own in public settings around the Algarve. \nMarcelo has visited Cornwall twice before\, performing his own and other classical composers’ works to sell out audiences at venues in the west of the county. March 2025 sees his return to Cornwall for a two week tour of the Duchy\, including an afternoon concert at Calstock Arts. This time he will be shining a light on Portuguese Classical Music and performing some of his own breathtaking virtuoso compositions. \nListen to Marcelo here & here \nPROGRAMME:\nAntónio Fragoso (1897 – 1918)\n• Peças do Séc XVIII\n• Aria\n• Menuet\n• Gavotte\n• Petite Suite\nMarcelo Montes\n• Heterónimos\n• Valsa para (Álvaro de Campos)\n• Arrieta em forma de alma\n• Valsa no. 2\n• Romance no. 1\n• Love \nINTERVAL \nCarlos Seixas (1704 – 1742)\n• Sonata no. 30\nLuís de Freitas Branco (1890 – 1953)\n• Preludio no. 4\nMarcelo Montes\n• A sós com a solidão\n• Valsa no. 3\n• Desencontros\n• Valsa do Adeus\n• Improviso

SUMMARY:15 February: Passacaglia Duo - Baroque pipes and Harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Passacaglia is an award-winning baroque chamber ensemble that performs in several guises ranging from a duo format to a multi-instrument line up\, performing music by some of the greatest composers of the eighteenth century\, as well as introducing audiences to new discoveries! With over 25 years of performing and recording experience\, Passacaglia brings the music of the baroque era to life with a range of exciting\, colourful and engaging programmes. \nWe welcome back Passacaglia\, who last performed for us in 2022\, but this time as a duo\, featuring Annabel Knight (recorders\, flute) and Robin Bigwood (harpsichord). \nAnnabel has established a successful freelance career which has taken her across the UK\, Europe\, America and the Middle East. As well as working with Passacaglia\, she is a member of the recorder quintet Fontanella\, which specialises in Renaissance and contemporary consort repertoire.  She is the founder and director of the popular Woodhouse Recorder Courses and runs the recorder department at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Annabel can also be heard playing on film soundtracks including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1\, Fantastic Mr Fox and Philomena. \nRobin won the Broadwood Harpsichord Competition in 1995 and nowadays enjoys a career combining solo recitals\, chamber music and orchestral continuo. He is a member of La Serenissima and the Feinstein Ensemble\, and is a visiting teacher of harpsichord at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Also active in the field of recording and music technology\, he works regularly as a producer\, writes for Sound on Sound magazine\, and founded the recording label Barn Cottage Records. \nThe programme of music the duo will perform is entitled ‘Made in Italy’.  Sensational and dramatic\, melodic and emotional\, Italian music took London by storm in 1711 with Handel’s wildly successful opera\, Rinaldo. The excitement and novelty of Corelli and Vivaldi’s instrumental styling were also catching on across the British Isles\, attracting a cohort of Italian musicians to settle in Britain and\, in the case of Francesco Barsanti\, absorb Scots culture into his own music. \n“Wonderfully passionate and detailed playing” Early Music Review \n“A performance of irrepressible joy” Gramophone \n\nHave a Listen: \nhttps://youtu.be/SBEILeoy67U?si=cSDgmSPeLRSp_kfC \nhttps://youtu.be/IE28Z3BHM-k \n\n Concert Programme\n\nGF Handel (1685 – 1759) Excerpts from Rinaldo (1711)\, Ouverture – Lascia ch’io pianga\, Allegro\nD Scarlatti (1685 – 1757) Sonata in A minor K 217\nA Corelli (1653 – 1713) Sonata in E major Opus 5\, No 11 (1700) – Preludio – Allegro – Adagio – Vivace – Gavotta\nF Barsanti (1690 – 1772) The Lass of Peattie’s Mill from A Collection of Old Scots Tunes\, 1742\nR Carr (fl 1684 – 87) Divisions on an Italian Ground from The Delightful Companion\, 1695\n\nINTERVAL \n\nF Giardini (1716 – 1796) Sonata V in G minor from Sei Sonate di Cembalo\, 1752. SUMMARY:31 January: POSTPONED due to illness - Kerdroya\, the Cornish Hedge with music from the Dalla Duo @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:We have had to postpone Kerdroya due to illness and hope to reschedule for mid March. All ticket holders will be contacted about the new date within 48 hours (30/1) \nKerdroya\, the Cornish Landscape Labyrinth\, is a work of Slow Art.
