Step into a vibrant tapestry of sound with this acclaimed early music collective who are renowned for their exhilarating fusion of classical\, folk\, and world traditions. They breathe new life into early repertoire\, reimagined through a global lens that is as scholarly as it is spirited. Expect an immersive afternoon of rediscovered melodies\, reimagined traditions\, and spirited musical storytelling from one of the UK’s most adventurous early music ensembles. \nFounded in 2012 by soprano and director Ruth Hopkins\, K’antu Ensemble explore the lesser-known corners of early music\, weaving together the rhythmic vitality of Renaissance Europe\, the rich textures of South American dance music\, and the raw energy of traditional folk. Their name – derived from an ancient Peruvian and Bolivian musical tradition – hints at the ensemble’s fascination with the crosscurrents of global musical exchange. \nThe concert features repertoire from the Codex Martínez Compañón (c. 1782-1785) – a manuscript in nine volumes containing 20 musical scores\, the Cancionero de Palacio – a spanish manuscript of Renaissance music compiled between the mid-1470s and the beginning of the 16th century\, and Terpsichore (1612) – a compendium of over 300 instrumental dances arranged by German composer Michael Praetorius. This specially selected line-up of musicians bring lively interpretations of the works offering infectious rhythms\, haunting harmonies\, and a deep sense of connection to music’s timeless power to move and unite. \nK’antu’s dynamic performances have taken them to major UK venues including Bridgewater Hall\, King’s Place\, and St Martin-in-the-Fields. DESCRIPTION:LEVERET \n ANDY CUTTING • SAM SWEENEY • ROB HARBRON \nLeveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians.  Andy Cutting (button accordion)\, Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina) are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments.  Together their performances combine consummate musicianship\, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity.  Leveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio rely on mutual trust and musical interaction to create new settings of their repertoire in the moment\, with no two performances alike. Prabha had an arranged marriage\, and her husband left for Germany shortly after the wedding. Prabha hasn’t heard from him since. A rice cooker is sent to her apartment anonymously and postmarked to Germany. It is the only evidence he ever existed. In a breath-taking moment\, Prabha sits with the rice cooker on the floor\, embracing it passionately. Prabha is not an expressive woman; her heart is deeply hidden from others\, so this moment\, filled with pain and longing\, clarifies her public reserve. \nRated – 15

DESCRIPTION:The Storyville Jassband\, founded in 1959\, is one of the oldest Trad. Jazzbands from The Netherlands still playing all over the world.  The band focuses on the new music\, called Jazz that became popular during The Roaring Twenties in the US. When New Orleans Jazz came over to Europe\, the European jazzbands of the fifties added their special flavor to the music. The Storyville Jassband has a distinct affiliation with this sound and will continue playing this style of music with great enthusiasm and a touch of humor. \n  \nThe Storyville Jassband has played with numerous guests such as Sheila Collier\, Lillian Boutté. The band celebrated their 50 anniversary with a Jubilee Concert where Chris Barber played as a special guest. \nThe Storyville Jassband has made 11 CD’s of which eight on the Timeless label. \n  \nFrom a recent review: “they were marvelous and exactly what our club loves-good old trad jazz\, but with a difference-very professional and relaxed. We can\, in all honesty \, say that wherever you are in the world\, remember the name and if you come across them\, we strongly recommend you make a point of going to see them” (Farnborough Jazzclub) \nMichael Muller-Trumpet/Vocals/Band Manager \nDuring his career Michael played as a freelance trumpet player. Winner of Jazz Awards and Honorary Citizen of New Orleans. Nowadays he plays lead trumpet as a regular member of The Storyville Jassband. Has a special love for British Traditional Ales. \nEugène de Bruijn-Clarinet/Sax/Vocals \nAs a child prodigy Eugène  played at a very early age with all the famous Jazz players in Holland and even abroad. \nHe graduated both in Classical music and Jazz at The Royal Conservatory of Music. He is a wonderful player and writes beautiful musical arrangements for The Storyville Jassband. \nVincent Roerdink-Trombone/Vocals \nSuperbe Trad-trombone player\, “Tail-Gate specialist Vincent Roerdink has also a very nice voice and is a wonderful scat-vocalist. Winner of vocalist price during International Jazz Festival Breda. \nJules Monen-Contrabass \nJules\, a fantastic professional double bass player with the musical heart in the right place. Young and passionate\, he and the other members of the rhythm section put the orchestra on track. \nStef Geurts-Drums \nStef played most of his career as a professional  classical musician in Symphony Orchestra’s. He is also an acclaimed teacher. \nHowever his love for Jazz is profound and he is a super Jazz drummer as well. \nTom stuip-Banjo \nTom is without doubt one of the most important professional banjo players in Europe. His solo’s are of outstanding beauty. \nThe plectrum banjo is his main instrument. Tom has played all continents except Antartica either as a regular member or as a special guest with numerous bands such as: Dutch Swing College Band\, Down Town Jazzband\, Delerium Tremelo. \n

DESCRIPTION:Merlin Hanbury-Tenison will be talking about his new book\, Our Oaken Bones\, a story of how we can heal Britain’s rainforests and how they\, in turn\, can heal us. After suffering from complex PTSD from three tours in Afghanistan and while struggling to start a family in the face of several miscarriages\, Merlin and his wife Lizzie returned home to Cornwall in 2020. \nThere they found a farm slipping ever further into debt\, the discovery that the overgrazed and damaged woods running throughout the valley are in fact one of the UK’s last remaining fragments of Atlantic temperate rainforest\, and the sudden and near catastrophic strickening by Covid of Merlin’s father\, the explorer Robin. As they fell more in love with the rainforest that Merlin had adventured in as a child\, so began a fight to save not only themselves and their farm\, but also one of the world’s most endangered habitats. Our Oaken Bones is an honest and intimate true story about renewal\, the astonishing healing power of nature\, and our duty to heal it in return. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Join supremely talented Annika and her band in celebration of some of her absolute favourite songs\, an eclectic mix of jazz standards\, Latin\, Nordic jazz\, contemporary tunes and some original compositions. \nBorn in South America and raised in Sweden\, Annika Skoogh is a highly versatile and celebrated multilingual jazz vocalist with a natural talent who’s based in Exeter. \nShe brings a special blend of Scandinavian charm and Latin flavour to her performances. \nIn 2017\, Annika recorded her first album\, Waters of March with her quartet (featuring Matt Carter\, Al Swainger and Coach York) which was released the following year 2018 to much acclaim. \nIn 2019\, she appeared at BBC Spotlight as part of the Fowey Literature and Art Festival and has performed alongside world-class musicians including Buster Cooper and Art Barton (Buddy Rich\, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen) former members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the\nlate legendary Kathy Stobart (Art Pepper and Humphrey Lyttelton). \nIn 2021\, Annika released her second album with her 6 piece Brazilian Latin band Orpheus which has been well received. \nOver the years\, she has played at some of the biggest UK jazz festivals including Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, The London International Duke Ellington Festival\, The Marlborough International Jazz Festival\, Sidmouth International Jazz Festival and the Bristol Harbour Festival. \nAnnika leads several ensembles with many sold out performances under her belt and has put together a fine stellar band with some of the very best musicians here in the South West and will be joined by Tom Ball – pianist\, John Donnelly – double bass and Gary Evans – drums. \n“…She has a very fine voice and knows how to enhance it to its full quality. DESCRIPTION:Hungry Bears! (band) is an extension of the long-standing Hungry Bears! duo. Rob and Derek have been writing and recording songs for many years\, and\, in support of the forthcoming Hungry Bears! album\, they are taking the songs on the road. \nIn order to produce the new songs live\, they have added bass player Rich Jones and drummer Nick Carter. \nThis is a new project and a departure from the usual show that the Hungry Bears! duo delivers. The new band plays a high proportion of original songs\, together with a selection of well-known\, but not commonly played covers. \nDerek Wood (guitars and vocals) \nDerek provides versatile vocals and an ‘energy charged’ acoustic guitar style that is the trade- mark of the Hungry Bears! sound. His songs are a major feature of the Hungry Bears!  set which comprise an eclectic range of styles. \nWhen Derek is not appearing with Hungry Bears! he performs a solo set consisting of well known\, but less often played covers\, together with some self-penned songs. He has established himself as a solo act in numerous venues in Devon and Cornwall. \nRob Williams (guitar) \nRob is a virtuosic and multi-styled guitarist who met Derek in 2008\, in their previous band ’80 Degrees’. They formed Hungry Bears! as a duo in 2010 and have played in excess of 750 gigs together. Rob has also been involved in many and various other bands including ‘Joey The Lips’ and currently\, with Rich Jones\, is a member of ‘The Filthy Gorgeous’. \nHis guitar playing contributes enormously to the unique Hungry Bears! sound and has co-written some of the songs that feature in the band’s set. \nNick Carter (drums) \nNick Carter has been a professional drummer for over 30 years during which time he’s performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists including Jimmy Osmond\, The Osmond Brothers\, TM Stevens\, Jeff Berlin\, Marco Mendoza\, Swans In Flight\, Doug Wimbish & many more. As a seasoned\, professional player Nick is at-home on stages of any size and has played numerous shows in a wide range of venues around the globe. \nThanks to his dedication and knowledge of all things drum-related\, Nick is also an experienced music journalist\, having previously held the title of editor of Drummer magazine (2012-2014)\, where he conducted interviews with the biggest names in drumming as well as having reviewed the freshest new gear available on the market and devised features aimed squarely at inspiring and educating the next generation of players. \nRich Jones (bass) \nRich is a sought-after bass player with enormous experience\, having played with many bands over a 20 year period. With Rob\, he is also a member of the celebrated band ‘The Filthy Gorgeous’ and joins the new Hungry Bears! project with the aim of contributing to a team intent on creating new music. \nRich’s influences are many and varied from funk and jazz to more melodic mainstream pop. DESCRIPTION:Adam Sweet delivers brooding blues and rootsy rock\, balancing richly detailed song writing\, soulful vocals and expertly piercing guitar work. Taking his cue from the British blues boom sounds and rock riffs of the 60s and 70s\, the independent blues-rock guitarist and singer-songwriter has carved out his own territory between classic rock\, blues and Americana. \nSince being crowned Introducing Stage winners at The Great British Rock and Blues Festival in 2023 the Adam Sweet Band have been rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the tightest units on the circuit. DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Co-operative Big Band who are returning to the Old Chapel  again after excellent performances over the last few year.s \nFormed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils  by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing as a fund raiser for themselves and Calstock Arts. \nThe Cooperative Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. SUMMARY:2 May: The Prophecy Of Merlin: A Cornish Tale set to Music
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to an hour of fast-moving oral storytelling and achingly beautiful music; an epic adventure story by Mike O’Connor and Barbara Griggs. After the story there will be a break followed by a 45 minute talk on the history and folklore behind it. \nThe original Prophecy of Merlin was a Cornish-language document of the 11th century or earlier\, now lost. It was the basis of the Prophetia Merlini of about 1153 written by John of Cornwall\, a priest from St Germans in Cornwall. In cryptic language\, John criticised Saxon and Norman incomers and advocated British rule. The main historical sources for the tale are Merlin in Cornwall\, a Ph.D. thesis by Michael A. Faletra\, and Julyan Holmes’ An Dhargan a Verdhin: The Prophecy of Merlin. Athelstan’s ‘cleansing’ of the Cornish from Devon was recorded by William of Malmesbury in his De Gestis Regum Anglorum of 1125.  \nMusic is integral to the tale and is exquisitely dovetailed into the performance. Melodies are linked with principal characters and events. Music supports action\, mood\, and emotion. An Dhargan\, Yn Termyn eus Passyes\, Dons Rys an Kam\, Kan Pibough Sagh\, Kri Bran\, Ilow Kosk\, and An Dasserghyans are by Barbara. Kynvan Bran and Medhel an Gwyns are by Mike. Kan an Alwedh is a unique tune from the time of John of Cornwall\, possibly from St Germans. \nSince the bronze-age\, bards have declaimed battle honours\, genealogies\, histories\, and stories\, both to entertain and also to endorse the positions of their rulers. By camp-fires and hearths\, families told tales to entertain and educate both adults and children. As late as the 19th century\, travelling storytellers in Cornwall told tales in return for bed and board.  \nMike O’Connor OBE is a well-known storyteller\, with a deep knowledge of legend and folk tale\, and great skill with language. A bard of Gorsedh Kernow\, he is respected as a violinist\, songwriter\, and musicologist\, and known to many for his music for TV’s Poldark. He is responsible for the musicology\, folklore and history behind this tale. \nBarbara Griggs is a skilled and sensitive musician\, and a fine storyteller. She too is a bard as well as being a Gorsedh harpist. Her music has been described as having ‘breath-taking beauty.’ She is the expert on costume and custom\, and with Mike\, has worked to integrate words\, sound effects and music to high praise. \nMike and Barbara’s Return to Lyonesse won a British Award for Storytelling Excellence and Odysseus Dreaming was an acclaimed retelling of Homer.
