SUMMARY:23 January: Gallery Bar Special - Tavy Tars
DESCRIPTION:Experience a great night of ‘songs from the sea’ and a few from the land. \nBased within sight of Calstock\, but on the other side of the Tamar\, the Tavy Tars come from Bere Ferrers and Tavistock and named after the river that links them. They have been a ‘crew’ for around 23 years\, and venues and audiences have ranged from shoppers Selfridges in London to a man and his dog on a rainswept night on Cotehele Quay – as well as shanty festivals at Falmouth\, Mevagissey and Teignmouth. Although they sing the odd well-known shanty\, they perform many other ‘songs of the sea’\, old and new\, plus some that are firmly on or under the land. They love to tell tales about the intriguing ‘back stories’ in the lyrics of many of their songs\, whether in Australia\, Canada or just up the Tamar. So their session features words as well as music.

SUMMARY:16 January Hedera
DESCRIPTION:Hedera \nHedera is a chamber folk project from Bristol featuring Lulu Austin (violin)\, Maisie Brett (Hardanger)\, Tamsin Elliott (accordion\, harp)\, Beth Roberts (double bass\, violin) and Isis Wolf-Light (clarinets). They perform original and traditional pieces inspired by music from England\, Scotland\, France\, Bali\, Georgia\, Bulgaria\, Ethiopia and beyond\, translated through a prism of experimental minimalism and contemporary classical influences. Their eponymous debut album is a collection of twelve original & traditional tunes that reflect their craft as composers\, tune-interpreters and collaborative arrangers (due for release in February 2026). \nIn 2020\, the five musicians began meeting informally to play tunes around winter bonfires\, limited to a small gathering due to the ‘Rule of Six’ pandemic measures. They discovered a shared love of deep listening\, slow playing and improvisation as they taught each other tunes from different traditions. Over time\, the ensemble has evolved into something more structured\, but still retains the intimacy and conviviality of its beginnings. \nIn 2022\, their debut track ‘Waterwheel’ premiered on KLOF Magazine and they performed their first highly acclaimed gigs at Fire in the Mountain festival and The Greenbank\, Bristol. In January 2024 they sold out most gigs on their debut UK tour\, performing in prestigious arts centres including King’s Place (London) and Upfront Arts (Penrith)\, as well as prominent community venues such as Black Fen Folk Club (Cambridge)\, Ashburton Arts Centre and Cornish Bank. Recent gigs include significant slots at Bristol Folk Festival\, Folk East Festival and Allen Valleys Folk Festival\, with many attendees expressing that Hedera was a highlight. \n  \n“Dramatic & deftly played…” – FATEA \n  \n“If I was still booking gigs and festivals… I just saw a band who would be high on my A-list” – Ian Anderson \n

SUMMARY:30 November 2025: Philippa Mo @3.30
DESCRIPTION:After a highly successful solo concert in January 2024\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the virtuosa violinist\, Philippa Mo. \nBetween January and November 2025\, Philippa will be playing a series of concerts ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be highlighted\, tracing his progression as a composer from his earliest compositions written for solo violin to his later works. \nWe are very fortunate that Philippa will be playing the first and final concerts of the series at Calstock Arts. \nFurther information about the other concerts\, all of which will be performed at other venues in the south-west\, will be publicised at a later date. \nPhilippa studied at the royal Academy of Music\, London and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, recitals at the Henry Moore Institute\, Leeds\, the Centre for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, the Deutsches Museum\, Munich\, and further afield at the Ankara International Music Festival\, the Lincoln Center\, New York and Ulaan Bataar\, Mongolia. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokoviev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. \nPhilippa was appointed Senior Lecture in Violin at Leeds Conservatoire and was awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015. In 2020\, she won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nPhilippa delivers the Partita in D minor by Bach\, one of the most deeply contemplative of pieces with the astonishingly complex final movement the Chaconne\, a dance over a ground bass with 64 variations. Missy Mazzoli is a groundbreaking composer from New York who responds to the opening of the Chaconne in her mesmerising piece ‘Dissolve\, O my Heart’. Telemann casts an elegant Baroque path through his solo fantasias and is answered by the exciting young British composer Leo Geyer\, who wrote ‘Guarea‘ for Philippa to perform at the Barbara Hepworth Garden in St Ives. The music comments on the exotic wood and shapes of Hepworth’s most famous sculptures. To continue with an upward trajectory and idea of flight (of fancy\, of fantasy)\, we close with a tiny gem\, ‘Bumblebees’ by Cyril Scott. \nProgramme \nTelemann Fantasia in D major no.10\nMissy Mazzoli Dissolve O My Heart\nBach Partita in D minor BWV 1004 \nInterval \nTelemann Fantasia in Bb major no.1\nBach Cello Suite no.4 in Eb major BWV 1010 arr. for violin\nLeo Geyer Guarea\nScott Bumblebees \nListen to Philippa here & here

SUMMARY:28 November: Knight & Spiers
DESCRIPTION:Both Peter Knight and John Spiers have made long lasting and significant contributions to the English folk scene via their work with Steeleye Span and Bellowhead respectively\, and each in their own way has changed the perception of what traditional music can be\, introducing it to much wider audiences. As members of the Gigspanner Big Band\, they have expanded those boundaries ever further.  \n‘Folk A-Listers’ ‘Folk Royalty’ ‘Folk Icons’ are terms frequently applied to them\, but what it means in reality is that they bring the best of traditional music to any stage they play. \nThe exquisite explorations of the liminal space that exists between traditional and classical music is what makes the music of Peter Knight and John Spiers so compelling and beguiling\, ultimately rendering genres irrelevant. \nIn the words of Tradfolk: As a duo\, they have developed into thrilling exponents of traditional tunes and songs\, repurposing the material as jumping-off points into the most enchanting exploration. \nIt’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to cultivate what has become an extraordinary partnership\, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album\, Both in a Tune\, chosen as one of the ‘10 Best New Albums from Around the World’ by the influential music journal\, SONGLINES. \nThe pairing of violin and melodeon is a classic one\, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers\, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history\, but also something to inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk music heritage.  \n “An extraordinary collaboration between two musicians at the absolute top of their game. This is an adventure that takes in musical detours you’d be mad to ignore” – Tradfolk \n“A beautiful snapshot of two musicians at the pinnacle of their craft. Listeners will find themselves lost in something magical; anyone will struggle to find something as masterful as this for a long\, long time” – Bright Young Folk \n“There can be no doubt that both performers are amongst the most\, if not the most\, talented of their peers. I was probably not the only person to leave the venue in awe at having witnessed something very special” – Fatea Records Magazine

DESCRIPTION:After their highly successful and uplifting concert in 2023\,  Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the much acclaimed and popular Meridianum Ensemble\, featuring: \nNuno Silva – Persian santur \nGriselda Sanderson – violin & nyckelharpa \nSoufian Saihi – oud \nSteve Tyler – hurdy-gurdy \nLouis Bingham – cittern & tambura \nRicardo de Noronha – percussion \nThe Meridianum Ensemble is a unique musical collaboration\, bringing together top players from Portugal\, Morocco and the UK.  The six musicians bring their individual styles and influences to the mix\, inspired by traditions from Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean to Portugal\, Scandinavia and beyond. Modal music\, improvisation and virtuosity are features of their gloriously entrancing infusion. Featuring traditional and original repertoire for Arabic oud\, Middle Eastern percussion\, cittern\, Persian Santur\, Swedish nyckelharpa and the mediaeval sounds of the hurdy-gurdy\, this blend is a sonic and visual treat. \nFounded in 2018 by UK-based Portuguese percussionist Ricardo de Noronha\, the idea was to draw his collaborators into one ensemble. Santur player Nuno Silva (the only non-UK member) resides in Porto and previously worked with Ricardo in several groups\, especially on the mediaeval scene in Portugal. In 2019 Nuno studied the santur in Iran. Through his interest in mediaeval music Ricardo met top UK hurdy-gurdy player Steve Tyler\, renowned for his rhythmic and inventive style. Violinist and nyckelharpist Griselda Sanderson and cittern player Louis Bingham performed in the Radial Band with Ricardo\, and Moroccan oud player Soufian Saihi’s Arabic classical musical style forms a bridge between them all to create a unique alliance. \nListen here: https://youtu.be/DWX6Dt3yV0U?si=NC_bs9p7V3esB-K0 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:24 October: Melanie Branton - The Full English
DESCRIPTION:“It’s a bish-bosh\, wish-wash\, car crash mishmash!” \nEver wondered where the word hoo-ha comes from? Why there ain’t no party like a double negative party?  And why bead doesn’t rhyme with bread\, machine doesn’t rhyme with nine\, and don’t get me started on yearly and early? From gangs of gung-ho Anglo-Saxons and smelly Vikings to Covidiots and Instagram influencers\, from enormous vowel movements to katsu curries self-isolating in the Twitterverse\, this one-woman show by poet\, spoken word artist\, former ‘A’ level English lecturer and all-round linguistics nerd\, Melanie Branton\, explores the fascinating history of the English language through the media of performance poetry\, silly hats and dad jokes. \nMelanie Branton has performed at festivals including Womad\, Shindig and Valleyfest\, as well as at spoken word nights the length and breadth of the country. She has also represented Bristol at three national slam finals. Her published collections are The Full English (2023)\, Can You See Where I’m Coming From? (Burning Eye\, 2018) and My Cloth-Eared Heart (Oversteps\, 2017). \n“The Full English combines both entertainment and education to explore the quirky and fascinating history of our rich linguistic heritage with charisma\, wit\, and large dollops of expertise. Melanie’s in-depth knowledge of the English language as a lecturer on the subject ideally complements her skills as one of the country’s cleverest and most engaging performance poets\, and I would highly recommend the show to anyone with an interest in our bizarre but beautiful language.”\nRob Casey\n\n“A thoroughly entertaining and illuminating show from a talented wordsmith.” \nTina Sederholm \n“Melanie Branton’s The Full English is such a stunning show. Her mix of witty spoken word\, quirky facts and physical comedy is a winning combination.”\n Lucy English\, Professor of Spoken Word\, Bath Spa University\n\nPRAISE FOR MELANIE’S PREVIOUS WORK:\n“Quite brilliant –  Melanie Branton’s ability to conjure light from the darkness\, comedy among the tragedy\, and a magical absurdity out of the everyday.”\nBrian Bilston\, the Poet Laureate of Twitter \n“Melanie Branton is an unexpected poetry slap. SUMMARY:12 October: K'antu Ensemble: Music in the Age of Discovery
DESCRIPTION:K’antu Ensemble: Music in the Age of Discovery \n A return visit from K’antu Ensemble is always a much-anticipated highlight at Calstock Arts. Step into a vibrant tapestry of sound with this acclaimed early music collective who are renowned for their exhilarating fusion of classical\, folk\, and world traditions. They breathe new life into early repertoire\, reimagined through a global lens that is as scholarly as it is spirited. Expect an immersive afternoon of rediscovered melodies\, reimagined traditions\, and spirited musical storytelling from one of the UK’s most adventurous early music ensembles. \nFounded in 2012 by soprano and director Ruth Hopkins\, K’antu Ensemble explore the lesser-known corners of early music\, weaving together the rhythmic vitality of Renaissance Europe\, the rich textures of South American dance music\, and the raw energy of traditional folk. Their name – derived from an ancient Peruvian and Bolivian musical tradition – hints at the ensemble’s fascination with the crosscurrents of global musical exchange. \nThe concert features repertoire from the Codex Martínez Compañón (c. 1782-1785) – a manuscript in nine volumes containing 20 musical scores\, the Cancionero de Palacio – a spanish manuscript of Renaissance music compiled between the mid-1470s and the beginning of the 16th century\, and Terpsichore (1612) – a compendium of over 300 instrumental dances arranged by German composer Michael Praetorius. This specially selected line-up of musicians bring lively interpretations of the works offering infectious rhythms\, haunting harmonies\, and a deep sense of connection to music’s timeless power to move and unite. \nK’antu’s dynamic performances have taken them to major UK venues including Bridgewater Hall\, King’s Place\, and St Martin-in-the-Fields. They have broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and toured internationally to Hungary\, Romania\, and Egypt with the British Council. Their albums Gusto and Dancing & the Divine have been featured on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show\, Late Junction\, and BBC Introducing. \n “Terrifically interesting and enjoyable…their performances are joyously individual” \nEarly Music Today Magazine \nHave a listen:  K’antu Ensemble: Geamparale – YouTube \n  \nRuth Hopkins: Voice / Renaissance Recorders / Baroque Violin \nJames Akers: Renaissance Lute / Baroque Guitar\nTymoteusz Jozwiak: Percussion                    \nPart One – England: Courts & Conflicts \nTrad. SUMMARY:4 October: Leveret
DESCRIPTION:LEVERET \n ANDY CUTTING • SAM SWEENEY • ROB HARBRON \nLeveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians.  Andy Cutting (button accordion)\, Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina) are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments.  Together their performances combine consummate musicianship\, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity.  Leveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio rely on mutual trust and musical interaction to create new settings of their repertoire in the moment\, with no two performances alike. Their playing is relaxed and natural\, drawing audiences in and inviting them to share in music making that is truly spontaneous and yet deeply timeless. \n Fiddler Sam Sweeney was the 2015 BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year and the inaugural Artistic Director of the National Youth Folk Ensemble.  He is known for his work in Bellowhead and The Full English\, and his solo recordings including 2022’s Escape That.  Box player Andy Cutting\, a three-time BBC Folk Awards Musician of the year\, is a compelling solo performer and works with Blowzabella\, Topette\, Anne Niepold\, and Roger Daltrey.  Concertina wizard Rob Harbron leads the English Acoustic Collective Summer School\, released his own solo album Meanders in 2019\, and is known for his work with Emily Portman\, The Full English and Emma Reid. \n Leveret celebrated 10 years on the road in 2023 with Forms\, a new album featuring new and traditional tunes played with the band’s trademark interaction and inventiveness.  Leveret’s music is firmly rooted in the English tradition but sounds fresh and new and over the years their intimate presentation style has charmed countless audiences\, helping the trio build a loyal following and demonstrating the enduring appeal and endless potential of the folk tune.  Listeners new and old can expect incredible musicianship and compelling presentation from a band at the top of their game. \n“What was remarkable was the delicacy and quality of their playing and the empathy between the three men\, watching each other intently as they progressed from repeated melody lines to subtle\, spontaneous variations. It was a magical set.” Robin Denselow\, The Guardian **** \n  \n“This is all about the joy of playing and the intoxicating thrill of three masters of their craft … the empathy between them as the music ebbs and flows is exceptional; you can also see the smiles and winks between them. The feel-good warmth they generate is palpable.” Colin Irwin\, fROOTS \n  \n“Classy players … their intuitive way with tunes is glorious” Mojo \n“You won’t find English folk music played better than this” R2 \n“Inspiringly good” fROOTS \n  \n“In folk music you need to hear the human. Leveret have got that trance-like thing – I’ve taken people to Leveret concerts who don’t necessarily have an interest in folk and they’ve totally got it.  There’s so much in those tunes and it takes real skill to see it and bring it out.  There’s a variation there between the three of them that goes on constantly.  Even if you don’t appreciate what traditional music is you can still be blown away by it…”  \nVerity Sharp [BBC Radio 3 Late Junction] \n“The intimacy and the intensity of this in the round experience was unlike anything I had heard all year. In folk\, it’s the sound of what’s to come” TheArtsDesk.com \n“Music of a rich\, sinewy immersion\, guided by a mutual sense of exploration\, space and a very English kind of swing.  It’s an intimate\, contemporary reinvention of the source material”  \nThe Guardian \n“This glimmering set of instrumentals cuts unfailingly elegant lines” \nThe Sunday Times \n“Sublime\, exquisite music – don’t miss them”   \nMartin Simpson \n
