DESCRIPTION:Highly acclaimed\, local musician\, Alison Smith (www.alisonsmithguitar.com) has been described as one of the most exciting and lyrical guitarists to emerge in recent years. Delighting audiences with her fluid technique and expressive playing\, she will be performing an exciting and varied programme\, including works by Giuliani\, Bach\, Mertz\, Ryan\, Lovelady and Garcia. \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/O1TR-qF1ehg \nHaving graduated with honours from Trinity College of Music\, London in 1995\, Alison went on to pursue postgraduate studies\, graduating in 1997 with a Distinction in Performance. From 2002 to 2008\, she taught guitar and coached chamber music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. More recently\, she has given performances and talks as a guest artist at Plymouth University and is now the Classical Guitar tutor for the university’s BA Music (Hons) degree. \nAlison performs at concert halls and festivals nationwide and in Europe\, and has broadcast on national radio including BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Scotland.  She has played eight times at the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain\, where her performances were described as “enthralling…..demonstrated sheer virtuosity….superb technique and sensitivity”. Recently\, she performed the World Premiere of ‘Rame Head’\, a stunning new work written for her by the celebrated guitarist and composer William Lovelady; this is a piece inspired by the beautiful headland on the Rame Peninsula. SUMMARY:23 January: Gallery Bar Special - Tavy Tars
DESCRIPTION:Experience a great night of ‘songs from the sea’ and a few from the land. \nBased within sight of Calstock\, but on the other side of the Tamar\, the Tavy Tars come from Bere Ferrers and Tavistock and named after the river that links them. They have been a ‘crew’ for around 23 years\, and venues and audiences have ranged from shoppers Selfridges in London to a man and his dog on a rainswept night on Cotehele Quay – as well as shanty festivals at Falmouth\, Mevagissey and Teignmouth. Although they sing the odd well-known shanty\, they perform many other ‘songs of the sea’\, old and new\, plus some that are firmly on or under the land. They love to tell tales about the intriguing ‘back stories’ in the lyrics of many of their songs\, whether in Australia\, Canada or just up the Tamar. So their session features words as well as music.

SUMMARY:16 January Hedera
DESCRIPTION:Hedera \nHedera is a chamber folk project from Bristol featuring Lulu Austin (violin)\, Maisie Brett (Hardanger)\, Tamsin Elliott (accordion\, harp)\, Beth Roberts (double bass\, violin) and Isis Wolf-Light (clarinets). They perform original and traditional pieces inspired by music from England\, Scotland\, France\, Bali\, Georgia\, Bulgaria\, Ethiopia and beyond\, translated through a prism of experimental minimalism and contemporary classical influences. Their eponymous debut album is a collection of twelve original & traditional tunes that reflect their craft as composers\, tune-interpreters and collaborative arrangers (due for release in February 2026). \nIn 2020\, the five musicians began meeting informally to play tunes around winter bonfires\, limited to a small gathering due to the ‘Rule of Six’ pandemic measures. They discovered a shared love of deep listening\, slow playing and improvisation as they taught each other tunes from different traditions. Over time\, the ensemble has evolved into something more structured\, but still retains the intimacy and conviviality of its beginnings. \nIn 2022\, their debut track ‘Waterwheel’ premiered on KLOF Magazine and they performed their first highly acclaimed gigs at Fire in the Mountain festival and The Greenbank\, Bristol. In January 2024 they sold out most gigs on their debut UK tour\, performing in prestigious arts centres including King’s Place (London) and Upfront Arts (Penrith)\, as well as prominent community venues such as Black Fen Folk Club (Cambridge)\, Ashburton Arts Centre and Cornish Bank. DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the ever popular Levowan Chamber Choir to perform their Christmas concert. \nFounded in 2015 and brought together to celebrate in the collective joy of making music\, Levowan Chamber Choir has now become well-established in the South West. The ensemble performs several concerts each year at venues across Devon and Cornwall\, captivating audiences with its signature sound. Passionately driven to maintain high standards of performance and musicianship\, the choir works on tonal richness and choral blend as well as musical expression and artistic delivery. The singers all have a strong musical background and bring a broad range of experience and versatility. Levowan presents an extensive repertoire\, comprising sacred and secular choral works from the fields of both classical and contemporary music\, and has been honoured to premiere several pieces here in the UK. DESCRIPTION:After a highly successful solo concert in January 2024\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the virtuosa violinist\, Philippa Mo. \nBetween January and November 2025\, Philippa will be playing a series of concerts ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be highlighted\, tracing his progression as a composer from his earliest compositions written for solo violin to his later works. \nWe are very fortunate that Philippa will be playing the first and final concerts of the series at Calstock Arts. \nFurther information about the other concerts\, all of which will be performed at other venues in the south-west\, will be publicised at a later date. \nPhilippa studied at the royal Academy of Music\, London and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, recitals at the Henry Moore Institute\, Leeds\, the Centre for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, the Deutsches Museum\, Munich\, and further afield at the Ankara International Music Festival\, the Lincoln Center\, New York and Ulaan Bataar\, Mongolia. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokoviev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. \nPhilippa was appointed Senior Lecture in Violin at Leeds Conservatoire and was awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015. In 2020\, she won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nPhilippa delivers the Partita in D minor by Bach\, one of the most deeply contemplative of pieces with the astonishingly complex final movement the Chaconne\, a dance over a ground bass with 64 variations. Missy Mazzoli is a groundbreaking composer from New York who responds to the opening of the Chaconne in her mesmerising piece ‘Dissolve\, O my Heart’. Telemann casts an elegant Baroque path through his solo fantasias and is answered by the exciting young British composer Leo Geyer\, who wrote ‘Guarea‘ for Philippa to perform at the Barbara Hepworth Garden in St Ives. The music comments on the exotic wood and shapes of Hepworth’s most famous sculptures. DESCRIPTION:Both Peter Knight and John Spiers have made long lasting and significant contributions to the English folk scene via their work with Steeleye Span and Bellowhead respectively\, and each in their own way has changed the perception of what traditional music can be\, introducing it to much wider audiences. DESCRIPTION:Making a welcome return to Calstock Arts\, this autumn\, are the Mojito trio with special guests. More jazzy than jazz with a wide variety of songs from times past & present. \nFeaturing Liam Harvey (bass) and Dusty Miller (drums) – both former members of the Royal Marine Band Service\, and current members of the Dave Hankin Big Band\, along with Calstock’s own Andy Lawton (ex Rhythm Machine) on piano\,. \nThey bring their own distinctive arrangements of of songs ranging from J S Bach\, through the Great American Songbook to more contemporary music from the likes of Lionel Richie\, Eva Cassidy\, Carol King\, Carly Simon & Billy Joel\, to name just a few.  So there’s something for everyone! \nAgain they will be joined  by singer\, Emma Watson\, one of Devon’s top female vocalists and Marius Rudnick on saxophones\, flutes & clarinet. \nEmma is a song writer and choir director of Exeter’s Soul of the City gospel choir\, who reached the final of BBC Gospel Choir of the Year in 2023. \nMarius is currently a member of  a variety of bands including The Glenn Miller Memorial Orchestra & The Dave Hankin Big Band. \nListen to Mojito & Emma here

DESCRIPTION:The Jake Leg Jug Band brings you the authentic sounds of 1920’s and 30’s America – jazz\, blues\, ragtime and gospel. Songs of murder\, betrayal\, gambling\, liquor and redemption. \nAfter self-releasing their debut album Cotton Mouth\, the band signed to one of the UK’s most prestigious Jazz labels\, recording three albums as part of the ‘Vintage Recording Project’\, recording live around ribbon microphones\, as it would have been back in the 1930’s. ‘Next Stop!’ ‘Everythin’s Jake’ and ‘Break a Leg’ all met with rave reviews; \n“A masterpiece of nostalgic music. The band display real virtuosity and create a wonderful sound that will be hard for any other band to repeat”  Folk North West \nThe band followed up with the compilation ‘Fifth Avenue’\, their debut release for the Green Bullet record label in late 2018. \n“Pick any track at random and prepare to be entertained ”  RnR​ \nJanuary 2020 saw the release of album number 6\, ‘Goodbye Booze’ which commemorated 100 years since the start of the American prohibition\, followed in 2021 with an additional vinyl release on Coastal Light Records.​ \n“Pretty damn good! There isn’t a weak number on the album”  Blues Matters​​ \n2022 marked the 10th anniversary of the band and saw them play over 100 gigs plus the release of their first ever live album – ‘Live at Audley Theatre’. \n“It’s hard to pick out favourites. We meet up most weeks in a back garden shed to play music\, talk rubbish and have a beer together. Unless we’re feeling sophisticated in which case it’s not unheard of for us to open a bottle of Elderflower wine. \nWe love all types of music and play cover songs of rock bands\, a bit of blues and  sometimes we even pick something from as recent as the early 2000’s! The songs we play are songs we love\, and we like to think we bring a unique sound to everything we do. \nWe’re multi-instrumentalists so when you see us put down the guitars to pick up the banjo and violin you’re guaranteed to hear us folk it up. \n2 out of 3 \n  \n

Modal music\, improvisation and virtuosity are features of their gloriously entrancing infusion. Featuring traditional and original repertoire for Arabic oud\, Middle Eastern percussion\, cittern\, Persian Santur\, Swedish nyckelharpa and the mediaeval sounds of the hurdy-gurdy\, this blend is a sonic and visual treat. \nFounded in 2018 by UK-based Portuguese percussionist Ricardo de Noronha\, the idea was to draw his collaborators into one ensemble. Santur player Nuno Silva (the only non-UK member) resides in Porto and previously worked with Ricardo in several groups\, especially on the mediaeval scene in Portugal. In 2019 Nuno studied the santur in Iran. Through his interest in mediaeval music Ricardo met top UK hurdy-gurdy player Steve Tyler\, renowned for his rhythmic and inventive style. They breathe new life into early repertoire\, reimagined through a global lens that is as scholarly as it is spirited. Expect an immersive afternoon of rediscovered melodies\, reimagined traditions\, and spirited musical storytelling from one of the UK’s most adventurous early music ensembles. \nFounded in 2012 by soprano and director Ruth Hopkins\, K’antu Ensemble explore the lesser-known corners of early music\, weaving together the rhythmic vitality of Renaissance Europe\, the rich textures of South American dance music\, and the raw energy of traditional folk. Their name – derived from an ancient Peruvian and Bolivian musical tradition – hints at the ensemble’s fascination with the crosscurrents of global musical exchange. \nThe concert features repertoire from the Codex Martínez Compañón (c. 1782-1785) – a manuscript in nine volumes containing 20 musical scores\, the Cancionero de Palacio – a spanish manuscript of Renaissance music compiled between the mid-1470s and the beginning of the 16th century\, and Terpsichore (1612) – a compendium of over 300 instrumental dances arranged by German composer Michael Praetorius. Prabha had an arranged marriage\, and her husband left for Germany shortly after the wedding. Prabha hasn’t heard from him since. A rice cooker is sent to her apartment anonymously and postmarked to Germany. It is the only evidence he ever existed. In a breath-taking moment\, Prabha sits with the rice cooker on the floor\, embracing it passionately. Prabha is not an expressive woman; her heart is deeply hidden from others\, so this moment\, filled with pain and longing\, clarifies her public reserve. \nRated – 15

DESCRIPTION:The Storyville Jassband\, founded in 1959\, is one of the oldest Trad. Jazzbands from The Netherlands still playing all over the world.  The band focuses on the new music\, called Jazz that became popular during The Roaring Twenties in the US. When New Orleans Jazz came over to Europe\, the European jazzbands of the fifties added their special flavor to the music. The Storyville Jassband has a distinct affiliation with this sound and will continue playing this style of music with great enthusiasm and a touch of humor. \n  \nThe Storyville Jassband has played with numerous guests such as Sheila Collier\, Lillian Boutté. The band celebrated their 50 anniversary with a Jubilee Concert where Chris Barber played as a special guest. \nThe Storyville Jassband has made 11 CD’s of which eight on the Timeless label. \n  \nFrom a recent review: “they were marvelous and exactly what our club loves-good old trad jazz\, but with a difference-very professional and relaxed. We can\, in all honesty \, say that wherever you are in the world\, remember the name and if you come across them\, we strongly recommend you make a point of going to see them” (Farnborough Jazzclub) \nMichael Muller-Trumpet/Vocals/Band Manager \nDuring his career Michael played as a freelance trumpet player. Winner of Jazz Awards and Honorary Citizen of New Orleans. Nowadays he plays lead trumpet as a regular member of The Storyville Jassband. Has a special love for British Traditional Ales. \nEugène de Bruijn-Clarinet/Sax/Vocals \nAs a child prodigy Eugène  played at a very early age with all the famous Jazz players in Holland and even abroad. \nHe graduated both in Classical music and Jazz at The Royal Conservatory of Music. He is a wonderful player and writes beautiful musical arrangements for The Storyville Jassband. \nVincent Roerdink-Trombone/Vocals \nSuperbe Trad-trombone player\, “Tail-Gate specialist Vincent Roerdink has also a very nice voice and is a wonderful scat-vocalist. Winner of vocalist price during International Jazz Festival Breda. \nJules Monen-Contrabass \nJules\, a fantastic professional double bass player with the musical heart in the right place. Young and passionate\, he and the other members of the rhythm section put the orchestra on track. \nStef Geurts-Drums \nStef played most of his career as a professional  classical musician in Symphony Orchestra’s. He is also an acclaimed teacher. \nHowever his love for Jazz is profound and he is a super Jazz drummer as well. \nTom stuip-Banjo \nTom is without doubt one of the most important professional banjo players in Europe. His solo’s are of outstanding beauty. \nThe plectrum banjo is his main instrument. Tom has played all continents except Antartica either as a regular member or as a special guest with numerous bands such as: Dutch Swing College Band\, Down Town Jazzband\, Delerium Tremelo. \n
