DESCRIPTION:Clive Carroll’s masterful compositions\, coupled with his versatility and unparalleled technical virtuosity\, make him one of today’s most admired and respected guitarists. \nWhilst gaining a 1st Class Honours Degree in Composition and Guitar from Trinity College of Music\, a passion for the steel strung guitar led to him playing everything from 16th and 17th century lute music to jazz standards\, blues\, Irish reels and his own ground-breaking compositions. \nIt was recognition by guitar legend John Renbourn which set Clive on a career which has seen him performing throughout Europe and North America and producing four CDs; the latest “The Furthest Tree” is entirely self-penned and features a collection of music that showcases the prodigious developments in Clive’s music world. \nHis performances are entertaining and eclectic\, enthralling everyone who sees him.

SUMMARY:11 March: Chris Wood
DESCRIPTION:In a world of soundbites and distractions\, Chris Wood is a truth seeker. His writing is permeated with love and wry intelligence\, uplifting and challenging as he celebrates the sheer one-thing-after-anotherness of life. Tom Robinson and Chris Difford are fans while Stick In The Wheel and The Unthanks look to him as an influence. \nWinner of six BBC Folk Awards\, he’s played with The Royal Shakespeare Company and was a key member of The Imagined Village along with Billy Bragg and Martin Carthy. A wise and soulful craftsman\, his concerts are a cliché-free zone. \n“Chris Wood might be the Ken Loach of songwriting. Very political\, but at the same time full of compassion\, and he grows sharper and more acute with each passing album. SUMMARY:CANCELLED 20 February: Lau – Unplugged
DESCRIPTION:Apologies\, but LAU have had to cancel the gig on 20 February as members of the band have tested positive for COVID. Our ticket agent\, CRBO\, will be in touch with all tickets holders. \nFor the first time in over a decade\, Lau present an entirely acoustic tour. The pioneering Scottish folk trio has always experimented with sound and form; the results have been complex and thrilling. \nAlready acknowledged as phenomenal live performers\, Lau arrived at a new creative peak with 2019’s Midnight and Closedown. Their 2020 Unplugged concert tour sees traditional music’s most celebrated innovators strip away their banks of electronics\, loops and wild effects. The trio of Kris Drever (guitar\, vocals)\, Martin Green (accordion) and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle) feel drawn to a more raw and plain-speaking aesthetic. The approach is subtler\, less about spectacle\, more about close listening. In brash and polarised political times\, here is the poetry of real instruments and considerate music making. \n‘Lau is a remarkable band – the most musically adventurous trio in British folk – exquisite and hypnotic\, musicianship at its best’. ★★★★★ The Guardian \n‘This is music of such stunning creativity – one of the most thrilling live bands’. Sunday Herald \nFour-time winners ʻBest Groupʼ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT 5 February: Steve Knightley – ‘Follow me Down’ Songs from the West
DESCRIPTION:Steve is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter/musician and founder member of folk/acoustic roots trail-blazers ‘Show of Hands’ described by Peter Gabriel as ‘one of the great English bands’. A constant throughout Steve’s work is his ability to root his songs in time and place\, notably the West Country where he was raised. \nInformed by a love of narrative and English traditional folk music\, Knightley writes historically accurate songs that resonate with contemporary meaning. He has an extraordinary ability to bring the past vividly\, smack bang into the present. It’s a gift that fuels his reputation as an ‘issues’ writer. The seminal ‘Country Life’ earned him the title ‘the gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor’ and his anti-banking rant ‘Arrogance\, Ignorance and Greed’ picked up the gong for ‘Best Song’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \nSteve has a degree in History and Politics and in 2015 he was presented with an Honorary Doctorate from Plymouth University for his services to geography and music. Steve is also Patron of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter and last year he was awarded the title of Honorary Rifleman by the 6th Battalion the Rifles Regiment.

SUMMARY:21 January: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:It’s difficult to find a musical genre that would fully describe The Countrymen but ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’ is reasonably close. \nFive seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. With a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as an increasing repertoire of original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required\, there is no mistaking that to a man\, they love their county with a passion. \nThey’re well known for performing at some of the best festivals in the south west\, including Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Rock Oyster Festival\, Looe Saves The Day\, Little Orchard Cider Festival\, Pandafest\, Falmouth Oyster Festival and Falmouth Week. \nThe boys are looking forward to another warm Calstock welcome and we’re looking forward to having them. They’ll be performing many of the songs from their new album (if it exists by then)!

SUMMARY:13 October: The Becoming – music and tales of the sea
DESCRIPTION:An innovative experience combining newly commissioned poetry\, music\, percussion and song with musical improvisation and interludes to represent the sea in all its guises. Accompanied by three world-class musicians\, Nicola Harrison’s fearless representation of the ocean and the wondrous creatures that dwell in it\, or live between saltwater and land\, between fable and reality is utterly captivating. Intriguing sea creatures and other evocative characters populate this exquisite oceanic journey with audience participation in singing and dancing fronted by Brixham shanty group\, Missin’ Tackle\, along with our own Calstock Singers. \nSelkies fall in love\, starfish sing of outer space\, crabs dance and a mermaid takes a magical sea odyssey from Cornwall to Africa. Featuring Pete Watson on accordion\, Gerard Cousins on guitar\, Jo May on percussion\, all representing the sounds and moods of the sea\, led by vocalist Nicola Harrison.
