SUMMARY:3 July: Zephyr (film screening) plus live music from Finnegan Tui
DESCRIPTION:Zephyr is a short film and EP about growing up and facing uncertainty. \nFollowing the journey of a young boy into old age\, this 30 minute visual poem is about finding balance – a dynamic exploration into the unconscious processes that shape our everyday lives. From the playfulness of childhood to the complexities of adult life\, we join the film as a mediator between intellect and intuition\, movement and stillness\, light and dark. \nIn their debut project Director Jack Tierney and Composer Finnegan Tui fuse place\, sound\, music and movement\, to create a hauntingly atmospheric and evocative experience. \n\nProduced by Abbey Valentina\, a 21 year old film producer who grew up in Calstock. \nAbbey will be at the screening with Finnegan who will play some of his music live and then there will be a questions and answers session for everyone to learn more about the film and its background. \nThis project started developing way back in 2020 when Finnegan Tui began writing his debut EP and Jack Tierney started writing the script that melded the visual and audible worlds together. \nA kickstarter was launched to help fund this ambitious music film \nproject: http://kck.st/37hyIz1 \nIt has been named a featured project on kickstarters website. \nThey have been lucky enough to have been supported during this project by: \n– Video Europe \n– Panavision \n– YHA \n– Film Co.tv

SUMMARY:16 June: Nancy Kerr & James Fagan
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Kerr and James Fagan are one of the best-known and most experienced folk duos on the British circuit today. Outstanding musicianship\, a lifelong grounding in traditional singing and instrumental playing\, acclaimed original compositions but most noticeably a visceral chemistry between these two make Kerr and Fagan a perennial favourite at festivals\, venues and clubs across the country. \nThey met in December 1995\, and formed the duo and life partnership that has become the backbone of their professional career in music ever since. \nThey won the inaugural Horizon Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2000\, and were also the first ever recipients of the “Best Duo” Award\, which they won in 2003\, and again in 2011. They are one of only two acts ever to receive this honour twice (along with Spiers and Boden). \nAs a duo\, Nancy and James have toured internationally\, most notably in the British Isles\, Canada\, Australia\, New Zealand and Japan. They have thousands of fans and despite now having two children continue to work and tour constantly from their home base in Sheffield. Starting a family has reduced the amount of time they can spend on the road together\, so their duo shows are now special and sought-after events. \n“Stunning – Five Stars”. R2 \n“A songwriter steeped in the tradition\, but casting it anew.” Songlines \n“Quite breathtakingly beautiful.” Mark Radcliffe\, BBC Radio 2. \n“The sheer abundance of distilled poetry on display is inspiring. And when it unravels in such a moving lyrical way\, such as this\, it will remain in the audience’s minds for a long time.” Spiral Earth \n“Quite simply the most refreshing\, impressive and compelling combo I’ve seen for ages”. SUMMARY:6 May: Tony McManus and Julia Toaspern
DESCRIPTION:Hailed by the late John Renbourn as ‘the best Celtic guitarist in the world’\, Tony McManus has been listed as one of 50 transcendental guitarists of all time by Guitar Player Magazine. \nJulia Toaspern\, from Berlin\, combines classical violin and voice training with an interest in jazz\, baroque and traditional music. She has released two albums of original songs and performed both as a classical player and as a singer/songwriter on both sides of the Atlantic. Her skills as a guitarist are prodigious and make a very exciting fit with Tony’s work. \nThe duo’s guitar treatments of traditional music is unique exploring the harmonic possibilities of these old\, and sometimes not so old\, tunes. Flat-picking or finger-picking at the highest level they are always at the service of the music rather than simply displaying technical prowess – although that is very evident as well. Julia’s violin effortlessly morphs into a fiddle as she weaves from Italian madrigal to Scottish reel. Julia’s songs go to the heart of love and loss\, hope and survival and are infused with a musical input from wide and eclectic experience of musical life. \nTony’s music is beyond beautiful\, it’s perfect” – Tommy Emmanuel. \n“Julia’s bell-like voice and her fiddle playing are thrilling. She moves effortlessly from fiddle to guitar\, her solo is impressive.” – Salon Festival\, France.

He happens upon a tag that reads “prohibited” covering a valve on the irrigation ditch. He kicks the valve\, unintentionally breaking it\, allowing water to flood his fields. SUMMARY:11 March: Chris Wood
DESCRIPTION:In a world of soundbites and distractions\, Chris Wood is a truth seeker. His writing is permeated with love and wry intelligence\, uplifting and challenging as he celebrates the sheer one-thing-after-anotherness of life. Tom Robinson and Chris Difford are fans while Stick In The Wheel and The Unthanks look to him as an influence. \nWinner of six BBC Folk Awards\, he’s played with The Royal Shakespeare Company and was a key member of The Imagined Village along with Billy Bragg and Martin Carthy. A wise and soulful craftsman\, his concerts are a cliché-free zone. \n“Chris Wood might be the Ken Loach of songwriting. Very political\, but at the same time full of compassion\, and he grows sharper and more acute with each passing album. The very best we have today\, and we need him more than ever.” – fRoots Magazine

SUMMARY:CANCELLED 20 February: Lau – Unplugged
DESCRIPTION:Apologies\, but LAU have had to cancel the gig on 20 February as members of the band have tested positive for COVID. Our ticket agent\, CRBO\, will be in touch with all tickets holders. \nFor the first time in over a decade\, Lau present an entirely acoustic tour. The pioneering Scottish folk trio has always experimented with sound and form; the results have been complex and thrilling. \nAlready acknowledged as phenomenal live performers\, Lau arrived at a new creative peak with 2019’s Midnight and Closedown. Their 2020 Unplugged concert tour sees traditional music’s most celebrated innovators strip away their banks of electronics\, loops and wild effects. The trio of Kris Drever (guitar\, vocals)\, Martin Green (accordion) and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle) feel drawn to a more raw and plain-speaking aesthetic. The approach is subtler\, less about spectacle\, more about close listening. In brash and polarised political times\, here is the poetry of real instruments and considerate music making. \n‘Lau is a remarkable band – the most musically adventurous trio in British folk – exquisite and hypnotic\, musicianship at its best’. ★★★★★ The Guardian \n‘This is music of such stunning creativity – one of the most thrilling live bands’. Sunday Herald \nFour-time winners ʻBest Groupʼ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT 5 February: Steve Knightley – ‘Follow me Down’ Songs from the West
DESCRIPTION:Steve is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter/musician and founder member of folk/acoustic roots trail-blazers ‘Show of Hands’ described by Peter Gabriel as ‘one of the great English bands’. A constant throughout Steve’s work is his ability to root his songs in time and place\, notably the West Country where he was raised. \nInformed by a love of narrative and English traditional folk music\, Knightley writes historically accurate songs that resonate with contemporary meaning. He has an extraordinary ability to bring the past vividly\, smack bang into the present. It’s a gift that fuels his reputation as an ‘issues’ writer. The seminal ‘Country Life’ earned him the title ‘the gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor’ and his anti-banking rant ‘Arrogance\, Ignorance and Greed’ picked up the gong for ‘Best Song’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \nSteve has a degree in History and Politics and in 2015 he was presented with an Honorary Doctorate from Plymouth University for his services to geography and music. Steve is also Patron of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter and last year he was awarded the title of Honorary Rifleman by the 6th Battalion the Rifles Regiment.

SUMMARY:21 January: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:It’s difficult to find a musical genre that would fully describe The Countrymen but ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’ is reasonably close. \nFive seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. With a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as an increasing repertoire of original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required\, there is no mistaking that to a man\, they love their county with a passion. \nThey’re well known for performing at some of the best festivals in the south west\, including Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Rock Oyster Festival\, Looe Saves The Day\, Little Orchard Cider Festival\, Pandafest\, Falmouth Oyster Festival and Falmouth Week. \nThe boys are looking forward to another warm Calstock welcome and we’re looking forward to having them. They’ll be performing many of the songs from their new album (if it exists by then)!
