SUMMARY:21 January: Wurlitza (SOLD OUT - check out ticket link for returns before 1800)
DESCRIPTION:Returning to The Old Chapel after two successful shows in the past\, Wurlitza deliver so much more than a soundtrack to silent films. Their choreography\, split second timing and hours of rehearsal combine to deliver a unique cinematic and musical experience. Blending old and new\, classical\, jazz\, pop and more\, Wurlitza cross genres and defy convention. \nTheir latest film is the The Kid: A life-affirming love story between a tramp (Charlie Chaplin) and his adopted son (Jackie Coogan). Originally advertised as “six reels of joy”\, The Kid broke all barriers of convention\, being the first film to combine dramatic action\, a strong storyline and slapstick comedy. It was Chaplin’s first feature length film as a director and became the second-highest grossing film of 1921. \nTheir soundtrack for the Kid includes music by David Bowie\, Sham 69\, The Beatles\, Nick Lowe\, Django Reinhardt\, Debussy and Chopin. \nIn a departure from Wurlitza’s usual hard hitting films\, The Kid is completely suitable for all ages. Wurlitza will be accompanying The Kid with another comic short film. \nChaplin’s story is one of rags to riches; as a child he spent time in London workhouses and lived for a while on the streets after his mother was admitted to an assylum. Chaplin’s difficult early start made him a man of enormous compassion. \nMuch of the magic of the film is the chemistry between Charlie Chaplin\, and the astonishingly precocious Jackie Coogan\, which is a delight to watch. \nJackie Coogan became the child star of his generation\, earning over three million dollars\, which would have been due to him on his 21st birthday. However\, five months before he came of age his father died in a car crash\, of which Jackie was the only survivor. His money was frittered away by his mother and step father\, leaving him nearly penniless. This led to a law suit that resulted in the passing of the Coogan Act\, that protects the earnings of child actors. \nJackie Coogan continued his successful acting career as an adult\, later being cast as Uncle Fester in the Adams Family. \n“Why does Wurlitza work? Because they bring magic. And that is never a bad thing.” \n“I would travel to another continent to see Wurlitza.”

He is a wonderful guitar picker and has a lived in\, authentic vocal style\, having learnt first-hand from artists like Bill Munroe\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan\, all of whom he has spent time with. \nGeorge Nixs is a flamboyant\, virtuoso lead guitar player and his playing lights up a lot of the material the band do. He used to do session work at Abbey Road Studios and counted Peter Green\, Eric Clapton and the Hollies among his musical friends. He played with future AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson\, in a band called Geordie in the 1970s. \nColin Boyd is well known locally as one of the best Bass players around and has a distinctive style all his own. The music sweeps from almost Bluegrass acoustic numbers to full on Chicago style Blues\, touching base with Rock n’ Roll and even Skiffle on the way! \nLoud enough to dance to and quiet enough to listen! \n  \nListen to them here:https://youtu.be/W0Hayf5CZXc

SUMMARY:8 January: Cornwall's Climate Stories - Food for Thought
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes\, the next in Cornwall’s climate stories – Food for Thought looks at the undeniable impacts of modern animal agriculture as well as some of the incredible Cornish initiatives underway to mitigate them – and also the role that regenerative farming could play in actually combating climate change while producing nutritious food. \nPresented by organic beef farmer Lisa Guy\, this film aims to inspire much-needed conversation and action about a crucial subject that has become one of the most contentious within the climate debate. \nShould we all be giving up meat and dairy if we’re to have a hope of avoiding dangerous climate breakdown? \nThis is what the headlines seem to tell us. But is this too simplistic a picture – and what would this mean for Cornwall\, where the majority of our farmland is used to raise livestock or to grow crops for these animals to eat? \nThere will be a Q&A session after the film with Bryony\, the film team plus Kate Dibble & Tim Williams. \nKate Dibble is from Bennamann\, a Cornish company developing an innovative technology to turn the methane produced on dairy farms from an extremely damaging greenhouse gas into an environmentally-friendly fuel. \nTim Williams is from Erth Barton Farm\, near Saltash. The farm is one of Cornwall’s three net zero demonstration farms. Tim is restoring the farm’s heavily-depleted soils to health\, showing that they can draw down huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the fight against climate change. \nThe film trailer can be seen here: \nOr for more information on Cornwall climate films click here \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:25 November: Lady Maisery
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning vocal trio Lady Maisery are long celebrated for their innovation at the forefront of the English folk scene. \nAll composers and multi-instrumentalists in their own right\, Hazel Askew\, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans weave together a rich palate of sounds with their unique approach to harmony singing\, intelligent and thoughtful arrangements of both traditional repertoire and original compositions. \nWhether unearthing a feminist twist hidden in a traditional tale\, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad\, or showcasing their immense multi-instrumental talents in original compositions that draw on a myriad of musical influences\, Lady Maisery are skillful explorers of the power\, beauty and vitality of song. \nPerhaps the most striking part of their performances is the magic that happens between them\, a chemistry that can only grow from years of creating music together – when they begin to sing one unanimous voice emerges\, carrying stories of sisterhood\, human suffering and the joy of living and singing in harmony. \nOver the last twelve years\, the trio have released five albums and toured widely\, performing sell-out shows across the UK and Europe. \nTheir next album – due for release in November 2022 – is eagerly awaited by their listeners. \n‘The most exquisite vocal harmony work on the English folk scene’ The Guardian \n‘Lady Maisery are women with ideas\, purpose and urgency…. powerful\, enthralling work’ Songlines * * * * \nListen to Lady Maisery here

SUMMARY:19 November: Janice Burns and Jon Doran
DESCRIPTION:Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an Anglo-Scottish duo who formed in 2017\, after discovering a shared love of traditional music. \nThey find their songs in archives that span the depths of our history; songs that\, regardless of age\, tell vivid stories about the nature of life\, from the ethereal landscapes of ancient ballads to the urban rhythms of work songs. Their compelling storytelling comes alive through tight vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin and bouzouki\, with arrangements that balance intricacy with energy. Their dynamic performances are a celebration of their own musical and geographic backgrounds\, embracing the differences that connect them. \nThe duo met whilst studying folk and traditional music at Newcastle University\, spending one year at the University of South-East Norway together. These experiences allowed them to hone their craft whilst expanding their audiences further beyond the UK. After three years of working together and performing in notable venues such as Sage Gateshead and Folklub Newcastle\, they decided to record their debut EP. It was released in September 2020 to overwhelmingly positive feedback. \n“The clarity and blend in their voices and their beautifully honed playing captivated the sell-out audience at Folklub Newcastle to the point that you could hear a pin drop. SUMMARY:4 November: Windjammer
DESCRIPTION:Windjammer are a trio who cast timeless stories in a context of their own making. They blend self-penned songs and instrumentals with original\, genre-bending arrangements of music drawn from the traditions of British folk. Turning unflinchingly from soft\, delicate emphasis to shoulder-rolling grind\, and from light harmonies to prog-infused instrumentalism\, they have a habit of keeping audiences surprised and engaged with ever-changing soundscapes. Their debut album\, ‘Awaken’ (produced by Sean Lakeman)\, showcases and expands this palette in a studio context. \nThe band\, comprised of Jake Sonny Rowlinson\, Jeremy Bunting and Fran Rowney\, formed around the folk and acoustic music scene in Plymouth\, where they maintain a strong local presence. Jake and Fran met in 2014 at folk sessions in Plymouth’s famous Dolphin Inn\, where they became firm friends and developed a short-lived duo. During this time\, Jeremy was performing as a solo act and the three met whilst performing at the same venues around Plymouth. The three rapidly became friends and collaborators\, forming Windjammer in 2015. \nWith an ever-growing fan base and a distinctive\, uncompromisingly original approach to their craft\, the trio are generating real momentum. Windjammer are increasingly performing further afield\, with festival credits including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Latitude and Hartlepool Folk Festival\, whilst continuing to play an active role in the grassroots folk scene of Plymouth\, East Cornwall and South Devon. \n  \nListen to Windjammer Band here

SUMMARY:10 Sept: Mississippi MacDonald
DESCRIPTION:Olly ‘Mississippi’ MacDonald grew up in Albaston and went to school in Callington and Tavistock. He is coming ‘home’ and will be joined on stage by Adam Herring from the Countrymen. \nHe’s been nominated three times in the British Blues Awards. He’s hit the top spot in the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association’s charts. He’s had the support of Paul Jones on BBC Radio 2. He’s had the thumbs-up from Blues Magazine in The Netherlands\, and from the Washington State Blues Society. \n“It’s modern\, it’s not musical archaeology\,” says London-based soul-blues stylist Mississippi MacDonald of his music. “It celebrates a fantastic tradition. It’s soul-blues\, and you’ve got to put your best into it.” \nSo far\, he has made seven albums. Together they chart his evolution as a musician and his ever-broadening musical palette. He sings\, and plays acoustic and electric guitar. \nMacDonald has arrived at the centre of a potent musical crossroads – where blues and soul meet. Not only is his thinking along the lines of The Black Keys\, his whole ethos is simpatico with the roster of Jack White’s Third Man label – a thrilling present symbiotically drawing from the past. \n“I just do it because I love it\,” he says. And it’s that love which courses through Mississippi MacDonald. Pure expression. It’s what makes Mississippi MacDonald irresistible. \nMississippi MacDonald – Blues Musician

DESCRIPTION:Unquenching Fire Tour 2022\nIn this exciting new collaboration from two of British folk’s finest voices\, Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) and Hannah Martin (Edgelarks\, GigspannerBig Band) join forces to present a set of songs that take them back to their shared roots. \nHaving played together on numerous occasions\, including in Steve Knightley’s Wake the Union Band and at the Royal Albert Hall\, they knew that they shared an instinctive ear for harmony and skilled instrumental improvisation. A sociable Devon winter evening led to an exchange of songs\, which proved to be so much fun\, they soon arranged another musical get together. Swiftly these became rehearsal sessions\, as a strong new sound emerged. \nMiranda and Hannah have spent many years playing on the British folk scene\, with several appearances at Calstock Arts\, but neither has ever dedicated an entire set to traditional song. Centred around their deep knowledge of roots music\, and a love of harmony singing\, they bring together old songs with new ideas; ancient tales with bass\, fiddle\, and banjo; and two mesmerising storytellers joining voices to create a spine-tingling testimonial to our shared musical heritage.
