SUMMARY:30 March - Turning My Farm into an Ark for Lost Species with Derek Gow @ 1930 SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to welcome local farmer-turned-ecologist Derek Gow to speak about his new book and his experience of rewilding. \nTearing down fences literally and metaphorically\, Birds\, Beasts and Bedlam recounts the adventures of Britain’s most colourful rewilder\, Derek Gow. How he raised a sofa-loving wild boar piglet\, transported a raging bison bull across the UK\, got bitten by a Scottish wildcat and restored the ancient white stork to the Knepp Estate with Charlie Burrell and Isabella Tree. \nAfter a Shetland ewe captured a young Derek’s heart\, he grew up to become a farmer with a passion for ancient breeds. But when he realised how many of our species were close to extinction\, even on his own land\, he tore up his traditional Devon farm and transformed it into a rewilding haven for beavers\, water voles\, lynx\, wildcats\, harvest mice and more. \nBirds\, Beasts and Bedlam is the story of a rewilding maverick and his single-minded mission to save our wildlife. \n‘Derek’s passion for our native wildlife is matched by his highly pragmatic approach to helping it thrive. He gets stuff done. The story of his amazing work at Broadwoodwidger is highly entertaining but also a heartfelt plea for a wilder\, more inspiring Britain.’—Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall \n‘Derek Gow’s riotous adventures rescuing threatened species and releasing them for rewilding read like Gerald Durrell on steroids. Courageous\, visionary\, funny and always up for a scrap with bureaucracy and complacency\, the world needs many more Derek Gows.’—Isabella Tree\, author of Wilding \n‘A brilliant read – and the entertaining backstory of a species of human megafauna who has transformed the British conservation scene.’—Benedict Macdonald\, author of Rebirding (winner\, 2020 Wainwright Conservation Prize) \n‘A do-er\, not a dreamer\, Gow has become one of our most outspoken rewilders.’ Countryfile Magazine \n ‘In this warm and funny autobiography\, [Gow] writes with a whimsical fluency about the moments of humour and pathos in an unusual life.’ Country Life \nFurther information on Derek’s books below – \nhttps://chelseagreen.co.uk/book/birds-beasts-and-bedlam/ \nhttps://chelseagreen.co.uk/book/bringing-back-the-beaver-2/

SUMMARY:4 March: Charlotte Glasson Band
DESCRIPTION:“Versatile contemporary jazz and fusion saxophonist / multi-instrumentalist / composer plays diverse originals all laced with her own bluesy\, expressive sax work.”  Time Out – London \nSince winning the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at the Marlborough Jazz Festival\, the Charlotte Glasson Band have been wowing audiences at venues across the U.K.\, including the London Jazz Festival\, Love Supreme Festival and Pizza Express Live (Soho).  The band\, led by Charlotte a multi-instrumentalist and composer\, play mainly original music\, specialising in weaving together sounds from across the globe to create a brand of music defined by rhythm and melody\, a world of bird call and sunshine. \nStylistically\, Charlotte’s compositions draw on Latin rhythms\, New Orleans Mardi Gras\, Swing\, Arabic\, Spaghetti Western and Gypsy Jazz influences\, sensitively combined into something uniquely her own\, upbeat and bouncy on the surface but with interesting twists and turns as a sub-text. She uses the enormously varied instrumental resources at her disposal in an unfailingly imaginative way – her own armoury alone contains a small orchestra’s worth of sonic possibilities. \nWhen you add in contributions by such fine players as trombonist virtuoso Mark Bassey\, and legendary guitarist Chris Spedding\, this is a band who create a unique and uplifting experience\, filled with colourful grooves\, lush ballads and high energy swing. \n‘If you’ve ever wondered what smiles sound like\, this is it.’ (Jackie Hayden – Hot Press) \n“If you could bottle this band’s music\, how wonderful it would be to inhale it to start every day.” Express and Star\, Lichfield. \n“Multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Glasson will restore your faith in jazz. SUMMARY:3 March 2023: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required\, there is no mistaking that to a man\, they love their county with a passion. \nNow in their fifth year\, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, The Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth Week\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day. \n2022 will see the band take on a third concert tour of both Cornwall and Devon entitled “Songs of Hope” which the band feels is an appropriate name for the times we currently live in. \nThe band was formed from an Open Mic Night at their local\, The Countryman Inn near Launceston\, which is where the band’s name originates.  They soon found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for an emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire. \nIn addition to offering quality live entertainment on stage\, they have also been busy in the recording studio and have released three online EPs to date\, Cornish Lads Vol.1\, 2 and not unsurprisingly\, Cornish Lads Vol.3.                  \nThey also released their debut CD album\, “Trees On The Hill” a few years ago and have recently released their long-awaited second album\, “The River Rolls On”. \n“If you get the chance to see these guys (The Countrymen) in concert then take it\, you will not be disappointed” \nFor more info \nFacebook:        www.facebook.com/countrymenband \nInstagram:        @thecountrymenbandcornwall \nTwitter:             @thecountrymenband \nHashtags:         #cornishmusic #cornishfolk  #thecountrymen #songsofhope \n

SUMMARY:16 February 2023: Guy Shrubsole - Lost Rainforests of Britain @ 1930 (sold out but live stream available - see below)
DESCRIPTION:Guy Shrubsole is a writer and environmental campaigner. He has worked for Rewilding Britain\, Friends of the Earth\, the UK Government’s Department of Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture. \nHe has written widely for publications such as the Guardian and New Statesman. His first book Who Owns England? was an instant Sunday Times best seller. Calstock Arts are very pleased to welcome him to the Old Chapel to talk about his latest book\, Lost Rain Forests of Britain\, which Chris Packman describes as ‘A treasure full of woodland jewels\, rare\, precious and beautiful’ \nIn 2020\, Guy moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys\, rivers and tors of Dartmoor\, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced\, he spend the following months investigating the history\, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England\, Wales and Scotland. Britain\, Guy discovered\, was once a rainforest nation. \nHis book is the story of a unique habitat that has been so ravaged\, most people today don’t realise it exists. Temperate rainforest may once have covered up to one-fifth of Britain and played host to a dazzling variety of luminous life-forms\, inspiring Celtic druids\, Welsh wizards\, Romantic poets\, and Arthur Conan Doyle’s most loved creations. Though only fragments now remain\, they form a rare and internationally important habitat\, home to lush ferns and beardy lichens\, pine martens and pied flycatchers. But why are even environmentalists unaware of their existence? And how have we managed to so comprehensively excise them from our cultural memory? \nThere will be a question and answer session at the end of his talk. \nBook Stop\, an independent book shop in Tavistock\, will be at the event selling books – which Guy will be happy to sign at the end of the evening. \nFor more info on Lost Rain Forests of Britain click here \nRead Guy’s blog of Who Owns England?. or click here to read more of his work. \nUpdate – Livestream available \nAs tickets have sold out we are now planning to livestream as well.\nIf you would like to access the live stream please send an email to webmaster@calstockarts.org. On Wednesday (15 February) you will receive an email (please check junk or spam in case it goes there) with the YouTube link to be used on Thursday 16 February at 1930. We are not charging for watching the livestream but invite you to make a donation of £2.00 per head (after watching?) using the bank details provided in the email. They are delighted to be joined for this evening by a special guest – singer Emma Watson – and the result promises to be an even more eclectic mix – something for everyone. \nEmma is a professional jazz vocalist and one of Devon’s top female vocalists\, with a soul feel that brings vocal tones reminiscent of Karen Carpenter\, Eva Cassidy and Dionne Warwick. She is a studio session singer\, published songwriter and lyricist with credentials such as One Direction\, Paloma Faith\, Freesat and T-Mobile (Peer music). She has played to TV audiences on the BBC and ITV and worked with a number of high-profile artists. \nListen to Mojito here or Emma here

SUMMARY:21 January: Wurlitza (SOLD OUT - check out ticket link for returns before 1800)
DESCRIPTION:Returning to The Old Chapel after two successful shows in the past\, Wurlitza deliver so much more than a soundtrack to silent films. Their choreography\, split second timing and hours of rehearsal combine to deliver a unique cinematic and musical experience. Blending old and new\, classical\, jazz\, pop and more\, Wurlitza cross genres and defy convention. \nTheir latest film is the The Kid: A life-affirming love story between a tramp (Charlie Chaplin) and his adopted son (Jackie Coogan). Originally advertised as “six reels of joy”\, The Kid broke all barriers of convention\, being the first film to combine dramatic action\, a strong storyline and slapstick comedy. It was Chaplin’s first feature length film as a director and became the second-highest grossing film of 1921. \nTheir soundtrack for the Kid includes music by David Bowie\, Sham 69\, The Beatles\, Nick Lowe\, Django Reinhardt\, Debussy and Chopin. \nIn a departure from Wurlitza’s usual hard hitting films\, The Kid is completely suitable for all ages. Wurlitza will be accompanying The Kid with another comic short film. \nChaplin’s story is one of rags to riches; as a child he spent time in London workhouses and lived for a while on the streets after his mother was admitted to an assylum. Chaplin’s difficult early start made him a man of enormous compassion. \nMuch of the magic of the film is the chemistry between Charlie Chaplin\, and the astonishingly precocious Jackie Coogan\, which is a delight to watch. \nJackie Coogan became the child star of his generation\, earning over three million dollars\, which would have been due to him on his 21st birthday. However\, five months before he came of age his father died in a car crash\, of which Jackie was the only survivor. His money was frittered away by his mother and step father\, leaving him nearly penniless. This led to a law suit that resulted in the passing of the Coogan Act\, that protects the earnings of child actors. \nJackie Coogan continued his successful acting career as an adult\, later being cast as Uncle Fester in the Adams Family. \n“Why does Wurlitza work? Because they bring magic. And that is never a bad thing.” \n“I would travel to another continent to see Wurlitza.”

SUMMARY:8 January: Cornwall's Climate Stories - Food for Thought
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes\, the next in Cornwall’s climate stories – Food for Thought looks at the undeniable impacts of modern animal agriculture as well as some of the incredible Cornish initiatives underway to mitigate them – and also the role that regenerative farming could play in actually combating climate change while producing nutritious food. \nPresented by organic beef farmer Lisa Guy\, this film aims to inspire much-needed conversation and action about a crucial subject that has become one of the most contentious within the climate debate. \nShould we all be giving up meat and dairy if we’re to have a hope of avoiding dangerous climate breakdown? \nThis is what the headlines seem to tell us. But is this too simplistic a picture – and what would this mean for Cornwall\, where the majority of our farmland is used to raise livestock or to grow crops for these animals to eat? \nThere will be a Q&A session after the film with Bryony\, the film team plus Kate Dibble & Tim Williams. \nKate Dibble is from Bennamann\, a Cornish company developing an innovative technology to turn the methane produced on dairy farms from an extremely damaging greenhouse gas into an environmentally-friendly fuel. \nTim Williams is from Erth Barton Farm\, near Saltash. The farm is one of Cornwall’s three net zero demonstration farms. Tim is restoring the farm’s heavily-depleted soils to health\, showing that they can draw down huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the fight against climate change. \nThe film trailer can be seen here: \nOr for more information on Cornwall climate films click here \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:25 November: Lady Maisery
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning vocal trio Lady Maisery are long celebrated for their innovation at the forefront of the English folk scene. \nAll composers and multi-instrumentalists in their own right\, Hazel Askew\, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans weave together a rich palate of sounds with their unique approach to harmony singing\, intelligent and thoughtful arrangements of both traditional repertoire and original compositions. \nWhether unearthing a feminist twist hidden in a traditional tale\, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad\, or showcasing their immense multi-instrumental talents in original compositions that draw on a myriad of musical influences\, Lady Maisery are skillful explorers of the power\, beauty and vitality of song. \nPerhaps the most striking part of their performances is the magic that happens between them\, a chemistry that can only grow from years of creating music together – when they begin to sing one unanimous voice emerges\, carrying stories of sisterhood\, human suffering and the joy of living and singing in harmony. \nOver the last twelve years\, the trio have released five albums and toured widely\, performing sell-out shows across the UK and Europe. \nTheir next album – due for release in November 2022 – is eagerly awaited by their listeners. \n‘The most exquisite vocal harmony work on the English folk scene’ The Guardian \n‘Lady Maisery are women with ideas\, purpose and urgency…. powerful\, enthralling work’ Songlines * * * * \nListen to Lady Maisery here

SUMMARY:19 November: Janice Burns and Jon Doran
DESCRIPTION:Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an Anglo-Scottish duo who formed in 2017\, after discovering a shared love of traditional music. \nThey find their songs in archives that span the depths of our history; songs that\, regardless of age\, tell vivid stories about the nature of life\, from the ethereal landscapes of ancient ballads to the urban rhythms of work songs. Their compelling storytelling comes alive through tight vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin and bouzouki\, with arrangements that balance intricacy with energy. Their dynamic performances are a celebration of their own musical and geographic backgrounds\, embracing the differences that connect them. \nThe duo met whilst studying folk and traditional music at Newcastle University\, spending one year at the University of South-East Norway together. These experiences allowed them to hone their craft whilst expanding their audiences further beyond the UK. After three years of working together and performing in notable venues such as Sage Gateshead and Folklub Newcastle\, they decided to record their debut EP. It was released in September 2020 to overwhelmingly positive feedback. \n“The clarity and blend in their voices and their beautifully honed playing captivated the sell-out audience at Folklub Newcastle to the point that you could hear a pin drop. They have invested fully in their craft and their sound as a duo and the results are breathtaking.”\nKatie Doherty (Katie Doherty and the Navigators) \nListen to Janice and Jon here \nFor more information \njanandjon.co.uk\nfacebook.com/janandjon\ntwitter.com/janiceandjon1\ninstagram.com/janandjonmusic

SUMMARY:4 November: Windjammer
DESCRIPTION:Windjammer are a trio who cast timeless stories in a context of their own making. They blend self-penned songs and instrumentals with original\, genre-bending arrangements of music drawn from the traditions of British folk. Turning unflinchingly from soft\, delicate emphasis to shoulder-rolling grind\, and from light harmonies to prog-infused instrumentalism\, they have a habit of keeping audiences surprised and engaged with ever-changing soundscapes. Their debut album\, ‘Awaken’ (produced by Sean Lakeman)\, showcases and expands this palette in a studio context. \nThe band\, comprised of Jake Sonny Rowlinson\, Jeremy Bunting and Fran Rowney\, formed around the folk and acoustic music scene in Plymouth\, where they maintain a strong local presence. Jake and Fran met in 2014 at folk sessions in Plymouth’s famous Dolphin Inn\, where they became firm friends and developed a short-lived duo. During this time\, Jeremy was performing as a solo act and the three met whilst performing at the same venues around Plymouth. The three rapidly became friends and collaborators\, forming Windjammer in 2015. \nWith an ever-growing fan base and a distinctive\, uncompromisingly original approach to their craft\, the trio are generating real momentum. Windjammer are increasingly performing further afield\, with festival credits including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Latitude and Hartlepool Folk Festival\, whilst continuing to play an active role in the grassroots folk scene of Plymouth\, East Cornwall and South Devon. \n  \nListen to Windjammer Band here
