SUMMARY:21 May: Dowr Tamar / Great Water - a short film about the River Tamar @ 1500
DESCRIPTION:Join an exclusive screening of Samuel Bestwick’s ‘Dowr Tamar / Great Water\,’ a short film that uses archive footage to explore the evolution of the Tamar through time\, diving deep into the river’s landscape. \nSamuel Bestwick is an artist and filmmaker currently based in Cornwall. Primarily employing the use of moving image\, his practice explores narrative in conjunction with place and social history\, often recontextualising these ideas within a modern context. Created for Bridge the Tamar\, a group exhibition hosted by MIRROR at Arts University Plymouth and curated by Hannah Rose and Elaine Sinclair\, Dowr Tamar / Great Water’ explores the evolution of the Tamar river’s landscape through time. With a musical score composed by The Worm\, the film catalogues humanity’s technological progression\, commercial expansion and environmental exploitation through the 22 bridges that cross the river. Starting as humble footbridges hidden amongst greenery\, the widening river soon features concrete constructions capable of carrying vehicles. From here the bridges become metal. Humanity’s influence continues to become more apparent\, small settlements make way for hamlets\, hamlets become villages\, villages become towns. Eventually\, the river reaches the industrial revolution’s Royal Albert bridge and 20th century’s subsequent Tamar bridge\, before finally opening up to the mass of water beyond. We are waiting to confirm\, but it is likely that Sam will be available to answer questions about his film after the screening. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:14 May: Jim Moray
DESCRIPTION:Should you care to look back over the past two decades of British folk music\, one musician in particular stands out for having a singular\, idiosyncratic vision that has rarely wavered in style and substance. Jim Moray may have garnered initial attention for his digitally-driven approach to traditional music\, but reflecting on his seven albums and numerous production credits it’s clear that imagination and invention are the real cornerstones of his work. \nThe cinematic vision of albums such as Skulk (2012)\, Upcetera (2016)\, and his game-changing debut Sweet England (2003) show just how far the old songs can be taken. His arrangements of traditional songs such as Gilderoy\, Horkstow Grange and Fair Margaret and Sweet William are regarded as amongst the classics of the folk genre\, while his treatment of the ballad Lord Douglas has become a must-learn for fingerstyle guitarists. \nAs Moray embarks on his third decade as a professional musician\, he can count career-defining performances at Glastonbury\, The Royal Albert Hall\, and WOMAD\, and has caught the attention of those in the know along the way. “I love this singer of old ballads”\, enthused none other than Iggy Pop\, no stranger to songs of love\, life and loss. 20 years in the business also means that his influence is being felt among a younger generation of folk musicians\, especially those who explore the wider canon and ways in which traditional music can be stretched. Frankie Archer recently spoke about how Moray’s work on Low Culture (2008) blew her mind. “It showed me for the first time what UK folk music could be”. \nNever satisfied with staying still\, the artist is still moving after shaking the folk world to its foundations twenty years ago. And in a genre where musicians reach their peak the older they get\, there’s a sense that he has only just begun \nwww.jimmoray.co.uk

SUMMARY:11 May: The Oxley-Meier Guitar Project
DESCRIPTION:Listen to interview on Radio Cornwall 1440 on 5th May 2023!! \nThe Oxley-Meier Guitar Project was established ten years ago\, following these two guitarist’s tenure in the unique quartet\, ‘Eclectica!‘ In that decade\, they have recorded 7 albums together\, ranging from duet to quintet formats and have performed literally hundreds of concerts together throughout the UK and Europe. \nThey are joined by Paul Cavaciuti on drums and Ralph Mizraki on bass. \nRegardless of the size of the ensemble\, Oxley & Meier have always maintained their two aims: \n– to write guitar-based music that is exciting\, engaging and fascinating to anybody interested in music. \n– to use an expansive range of instruments in order to deliver a stylistically wide ranging programme. \nTo achieve this\, they usually use ten different guitars at their gigs. These include more unusual instruments such as:  11-string Glissantar (fretless instrument\, based on the arabic lute – the oud)\, an Electric 12-string\, a Sitar guitar & a Fretless nylon-string \nThe soundscapes are very much influenced from their various travels\, this summarised by their strap-line: “soundscapes from Turkey to Brazil“. As a result\, Oxley and Meier have performed in many of the top venues in jazz\, world music and classical venues: Ronnie Scott’s\, Musicport Festival and The Wigmore Hall\, respectively. \nExpect an evening of joyous varied fare\, performed by these two seriously established musicians that The Observer described thus: \n“When it comes to empathy\, the duet of guitar virtuosi comes close to perfection” \nOr if you are a fan of the ECM supergroup\, Oregon\, this quote from Ralph Towner will resonate: \n“This album is a wonderful example of the high level of music that can be made by combining two great guitarists/composers/improvisers such as Pete and Nicolas. They have put together a feast of virtuosity\, delivered wit depth\, wit and joy” \nThe quartet will be performing brand-new music for this concert – as described above! \nThree live pieces: \nhttps://youtu.be/ar8FeO1sNxw \nhttps://youtu.be/b7uDr1ZrSJg \nhttps://youtu.be/VyMQR78j9iI

SUMMARY:30 March - Turning My Farm into an Ark for Lost Species with Derek Gow @ 1930 SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to welcome local farmer-turned-ecologist Derek Gow to speak about his new book and his experience of rewilding. \nTearing down fences literally and metaphorically\, Birds\, Beasts and Bedlam recounts the adventures of Britain’s most colourful rewilder\, Derek Gow. How he raised a sofa-loving wild boar piglet\, transported a raging bison bull across the UK\, got bitten by a Scottish wildcat and restored the ancient white stork to the Knepp Estate with Charlie Burrell and Isabella Tree. \nAfter a Shetland ewe captured a young Derek’s heart\, he grew up to become a farmer with a passion for ancient breeds. But when he realised how many of our species were close to extinction\, even on his own land\, he tore up his traditional Devon farm and transformed it into a rewilding haven for beavers\, water voles\, lynx\, wildcats\, harvest mice and more. \nBirds\, Beasts and Bedlam is the story of a rewilding maverick and his single-minded mission to save our wildlife. \n‘Derek’s passion for our native wildlife is matched by his highly pragmatic approach to helping it thrive. He gets stuff done. The story of his amazing work at Broadwoodwidger is highly entertaining but also a heartfelt plea for a wilder\, more inspiring Britain.’—Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall \n‘Derek Gow’s riotous adventures rescuing threatened species and releasing them for rewilding read like Gerald Durrell on steroids. Courageous\, visionary\, funny and always up for a scrap with bureaucracy and complacency\, the world needs many more Derek Gows.’—Isabella Tree\, author of Wilding \n‘A brilliant read – and the entertaining backstory of a species of human megafauna who has transformed the British conservation scene.’—Benedict Macdonald\, author of Rebirding (winner\, 2020 Wainwright Conservation Prize) \n‘A do-er\, not a dreamer\, Gow has become one of our most outspoken rewilders.’ Countryfile Magazine \n ‘In this warm and funny autobiography\, [Gow] writes with a whimsical fluency about the moments of humour and pathos in an unusual life.’ Country Life \nFurther information on Derek’s books below – \nhttps://chelseagreen.co.uk/book/birds-beasts-and-bedlam/ \nhttps://chelseagreen.co.uk/book/bringing-back-the-beaver-2/

SUMMARY:4 March: Charlotte Glasson Band

SUMMARY:3 March 2023: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required\, there is no mistaking that to a man\, they love their county with a passion. \nNow in their fifth year\, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, The Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth Week\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day. \n2022 will see the band take on a third concert tour of both Cornwall and Devon entitled “Songs of Hope” which the band feels is an appropriate name for the times we currently live in. \nThe band was formed from an Open Mic Night at their local\, The Countryman Inn near Launceston\, which is where the band’s name originates.  They soon found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for an emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire. \nIn addition to offering quality live entertainment on stage\, they have also been busy in the recording studio and have released three online EPs to date\, Cornish Lads Vol.1\, 2 and not unsurprisingly\, Cornish Lads Vol.3.                  \nThey also released their debut CD album\, “Trees On The Hill” a few years ago and have recently released their long-awaited second album\, “The River Rolls On”. \n“If you get the chance to see these guys (The Countrymen) in concert then take it\, you will not be disappointed” \nFor more info \nFacebook:        www.facebook.com/countrymenband \nInstagram:        @thecountrymenbandcornwall \nTwitter:             @thecountrymenband \nHashtags:         #cornishmusic #cornishfolk  #thecountrymen #songsofhope \n

SUMMARY:16 February 2023: Guy Shrubsole - Lost Rainforests of Britain @ 1930 (sold out but live stream available - see below)
DESCRIPTION:Guy Shrubsole is a writer and environmental campaigner. He has worked for Rewilding Britain\, Friends of the Earth\, the UK Government’s Department of Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture. \nHe has written widely for publications such as the Guardian and New Statesman. His first book Who Owns England? was an instant Sunday Times best seller. Calstock Arts are very pleased to welcome him to the Old Chapel to talk about his latest book\, Lost Rain Forests of Britain\, which Chris Packman describes as ‘A treasure full of woodland jewels\, rare\, precious and beautiful’ \nIn 2020\, Guy moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys\, rivers and tors of Dartmoor\, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced\, he spend the following months investigating the history\, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England\, Wales and Scotland. Britain\, Guy discovered\, was once a rainforest nation. \nHis book is the story of a unique habitat that has been so ravaged\, most people today don’t realise it exists. Temperate rainforest may once have covered up to one-fifth of Britain and played host to a dazzling variety of luminous life-forms\, inspiring Celtic druids\, Welsh wizards\, Romantic poets\, and Arthur Conan Doyle’s most loved creations. Though only fragments now remain\, they form a rare and internationally important habitat\, home to lush ferns and beardy lichens\, pine martens and pied flycatchers. But why are even environmentalists unaware of their existence? And how have we managed to so comprehensively excise them from our cultural memory? \nThere will be a question and answer session at the end of his talk. \nBook Stop\, an independent book shop in Tavistock\, will be at the event selling books – which Guy will be happy to sign at the end of the evening. \nFor more info on Lost Rain Forests of Britain click here \nRead Guy’s blog of Who Owns England?. or click here to read more of his work. \nUpdate – Livestream available \nAs tickets have sold out we are now planning to livestream as well.\nIf you would like to access the live stream please send an email to webmaster@calstockarts.org. On Wednesday (15 February) you will receive an email (please check junk or spam in case it goes there) with the YouTube link to be used on Thursday 16 February at 1930. It was Chaplin’s first feature length film as a director and became the second-highest grossing film of 1921. \nTheir soundtrack for the Kid includes music by David Bowie\, Sham 69\, The Beatles\, Nick Lowe\, Django Reinhardt\, Debussy and Chopin. \nIn a departure from Wurlitza’s usual hard hitting films\, The Kid is completely suitable for all ages. Wurlitza will be accompanying The Kid with another comic short film. \nChaplin’s story is one of rags to riches; as a child he spent time in London workhouses and lived for a while on the streets after his mother was admitted to an assylum. Chaplin’s difficult early start made him a man of enormous compassion. \nMuch of the magic of the film is the chemistry between Charlie Chaplin\, and the astonishingly precocious Jackie Coogan\, which is a delight to watch. \nJackie Coogan became the child star of his generation\, earning over three million dollars\, which would have been due to him on his 21st birthday. However\, five months before he came of age his father died in a car crash\, of which Jackie was the only survivor. His money was frittered away by his mother and step father\, leaving him nearly penniless. This led to a law suit that resulted in the passing of the Coogan Act\, that protects the earnings of child actors. \nJackie Coogan continued his successful acting career as an adult\, later being cast as Uncle Fester in the Adams Family. \n“Why does Wurlitza work? Because they bring magic. And that is never a bad thing.” \n“I would travel to another continent to see Wurlitza.”

He is a wonderful guitar picker and has a lived in\, authentic vocal style\, having learnt first-hand from artists like Bill Munroe\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan\, all of whom he has spent time with. \nGeorge Nixs is a flamboyant\, virtuoso lead guitar player and his playing lights up a lot of the material the band do. He played with future AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson\, in a band called Geordie in the 1970s. \nColin Boyd is well known locally as one of the best Bass players around and has a distinctive style all his own. The music sweeps from almost Bluegrass acoustic numbers to full on Chicago style Blues\, touching base with Rock n’ Roll and even Skiffle on the way! \nLoud enough to dance to and quiet enough to listen! \n  \nListen to them here:https://youtu.be/W0Hayf5CZXc
