It sheds light on what we can learn from indigenous cultures\, the importance of our bonds with nature and how ‘western white colonialism has shaped our lives and\, unless change happens\, will continue to shape the future. \nGlenn Morris F.R.G.S\, has travelled extensively throughout Arctic regions and spent time living with the Inuit of Northern Greenland and Arctic Canada. He has participated in expeditions following in the footsteps of ‘explorers’ of the ‘Heroic Age’ and conceived the ‘Arctic Voice’ project\, an environmental initiative designed to link young people throughout the Arctic north with children in the U.K. The talk will endeavour to shed some light on what we can learn from indigenous cultures\, the importance of our bonds with nature and how ‘western’ white colonialism has shaped our lives and\, unless change happens\, will continue to shape  our future. \n

As the years pass\, she is tethered to a growing child\, weighed down by domestic routine\, and slowly estranged from her own wild self. Where once she swam vast oceans\, she now migrates between the washing machine\, the oven\, and the school gate – an unwitting tradwife. Torn between loyalty and longing\, depression and quiet rage\, our selkie must reckon with the cost of staying and the near-impossibility of leaving. \nHilarious\, heartfelt and darkly intimate\, The Selkie Who Stayed reshapes the classic Selkie myth for the age of consent. \nThe night will open with Tales of Freyja – a collection of stories of the fierce Norse Goddess. \nSuitable for ages 12+. \nHannah Sneyd is a storyteller based on Dartmoor. She began performing four years ago when stories began to drop into her thoughts\, asking to be told. Her style is witty\, lyrical and bold\, using story to weave bridges between the world we inhabit and the magical realms just beyond our fingertips. With a background in science and nature documentary television and a passion for nature\, her work is deeply inspired by the landscape and the creatures within it. So expect dancing rivers\, quarrelsome birds and even the odd dragon. \nWhen not performing\, Hannah works as an educator\, creating transformative spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect and learn through theatre. As associate artist with organisations Bigfoot Arts Education\, Doorstep Arts and Reboot the Roots\, she has run workshops in theatre-in-education at schools\, social centres and festivals across the UK and wider Europe. She runs the monthly storytelling club Stories and Stars at a permaculture site in central Plymouth\, and loves nothing more than sharing stories around an open fire\, under a blanket of stars.

DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the return of the highly accomplished local harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry\, for what will be an enchanting concert. As a recitalist\, she is well-known for her warm and approachable presentation style. The Bath Chronicle said of her: “It is hard to say just which was more pleasurable – the exquisite playing or the often deliciously outrageous stories of composers’ lives that Elizabeth Jane recounted in between the music.” She performs both nationally and internationally\, giving around eighty performances a year from recitals in historic houses or specialist arts cruises to weddings and funerals. She has performed to sold-out audiences in the USA\, Italy and France.     \nElizabeth-Jane fell in love with the harp as a little girl whilst reading fairy-tales in which the harp possessed magical powers! She grew up to study at Exeter University and the Royal College of Music\, and has been a full-time professional musician for over thirty years. As well as performing recitals\, she is the only specialist silent movie harpist in the world\, playing live to cinema screenings of early film\, and has won multiple awards for her silent film accompaniments and compositions. Her uniquely rich tone on the harp has graced film and TV soundtracks screened in over thirty countries including Canada\, Iceland\, Kenya\, Iran and South Africa. Her compositions have been used by ITV\, the BBC and by Irish\, Japanese\, Danish and Canadian film\, radio and television. \nA life-long lover of nature\, Elizabeth-Jane lives in the Dartmoor National Park. In her spare time\, she loves growing trees and creating a magical woodland where she can brew tea in a twig kettle\, keep bees and listen to birdsong. Sometimes she gets up on Sunday mornings early enough to sing in the church choir. Drawing on modern jazz\, post-bop and the landscapes and folklore of Wales\, the quartet has developed a distinctive sound that is both evocative and accessible. \nFeaturing Aidan Thorne (bass) and Ross Hicks (piano)\, the band are known for their close musical rapport\, dynamic live performances and interplay between composed material and improvisation. \nWith two acclaimed albums\, Source of the Severn and Outside the Light\, the Will has performed at leading UK venues and festivals and received national radio play and praise from publications including Jazzwise\, UK Jazz News and All About Jazz. \n  \nFull Biography: \nWill Barnes brings his trio to Calstock Arts. This contemporary jazz ensemble led by the guitarist and composer is formed around Barnes’s compositional vision. They blend melodic guitar-led writing with open improvisation\, drawing on modern jazz\, post-bop\, and cinematic atmospheres. \n​The band has become known for their close musical rapport and responsive live playing. Their sound nods to figures like Pat Metheny\, Mikael Åkerfeldt\, Wes Montgomery while aiming for a distinct\, contemporary voice that reflects the landscapes and narratives that inspire Barnes’s writing. \n​Releases to date include the debut Source of the Severn and the follow-up Outside the Light. Source of the Severn introduced the band’s melodic sensibility and ensemble precision\, while Outside the Light expanded the band’s conceptual focus—drawing on local folklore\, seasonal cycles and changing landscapes—to deepen the interplay between composed material and improvisation. Across both records the group explores atmosphere\, place and emotional arc without sacrificing swing\, technical finesse or accessible melodic content. \n​On stage the trio presents immersive sets that move between carefully arranged pieces and extended improvisation. They have appeared at prominent UK venues and festivals\, received national radio play\, and received positive press for their musicianship and evocative writing. At the centre of the project\, Will Barnes combines a composer’s attention to narrative with a player’s commitment to conversation—leading to an ensemble that aims to be both expressive and approachable. \nAlongside Barnes are Aidan Thorne (bass) and Ross Hicks (piano)\, who are in demand musicians and have collectively toured globally playing with some of the top artists and groups on the jazz scene today. \nAidan Thorne is a double bass\, electric bass player and composer based in Powys\, who is a prominent figure on the music scene in Wales and RWCM graduate. He leads his own band Duski alongside a number of duo projects with Guitarists Toby Hay and Jason Ball. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical afternoon and experience the rich tapestry of music that filled the air centuries ago\, from haunting melodies to lively dances. Marco Cannavo\, Steve Tyler and Katy Marchant present an instrumental journey into the music of medieval Europe\, spanning the 12th to 15th centuries. Featuring historical musical instruments such as hurdy-gurdy and its early predecessors\, bagpipes\, harp\, lute\, citole\, portative organ\, and percussions\, the concert explores rhythms and melodies from both sacred and secular traditions\, interpreted with imaginative freedom while remaining rooted in historical sources. Much of the music would have been heard in churches during Christmas and other religious celebrations\, while the livelier tunes would have been played at seasonal gatherings and communal festivities. Harken thou to the melody!  \nMarco Cannavò is a hurdy-gurdy player and multi-instrumentalist dedicated to medieval and traditional music. Having studied with and mentored by Steve Tyler they now collaborate on projects exploring the music of medieval Europe with performances throughout the UK. Deeply connected to his Southern Italian heritage\, the tambourine holds a central place in Marco’s musical identity and in the traditions of Southern Italy.  \nSteve Tyler is a renowned hurdy-gurdy player. For many years a performer of medieval music\, his main interest is in patterns and rhythms and the resulting interweaving of different instruments\, inspired by patterns in nature\, mathematics and the imagination. He has performed with such diverse artists as English folk singer Jackie Oates\, German industrial/electronic musician F.M. Einheit and South African puppeteer John Roberts.  \nKaty Marchant is a musician and mask maker and was the founder and director of ‘Daughters of Elvin: A Medieval Music and Dance Theatre Company’. In 2012 Katy and Steve formed the band Woodwose\, a quartet specialising in medieval music and balfolk\, and writing their own compositions for bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. With Steve\, Katy has performed throughout Britain\, Ireland\, Europe and Scandinavia.  \nPre-Concert Workshop: 11:00AM  \nPrior to the afternoon concert why not join Marco\, Steve and Katy for an interactive and family-friendly Medieval Music Workshop at the Old Chapel!  \nIn this relaxed session\, get up close and personal with a range of beautiful medieval instruments that will feature in the afternoon concert. Learn how their unique sounds are produced and how they were played in medieval times. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and see the instruments up close. For those interested\, some of the instruments may be available to try out under supervision (though not all instruments can be handled). This workshop is perfect for everyone\, including families (children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian). School groups are warmly invited to join.
