SUMMARY:7 October: Leveret - a collaboration of ANDY CUTTING • SAM SWEENEY • ROB HARBRON
DESCRIPTION:Leveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians.  Andy Cutting (button accordion)\, Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina) are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments.  Together their performances combine consummate musicianship\, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity. \nLeveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio rely on mutual trust and musical interaction to create new settings of their repertoire in the moment\, with no two performances alike. Their playing is relaxed and natural\, drawing audiences in and inviting them to share in music making that is truly spontaneous and yet deeply timeless. \nFiddler Sam Sweeney was the 2015 BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year and the inaugural Artistic Director of the National Youth Folk Ensemble.  He is known for his work in Bellowhead and The Full English\, and his solo recordings including 2022’s Escape That. \nBox player Andy Cutting\, a three-time BBC Folk Awards Musician of the year\, is a compelling solo performer and works with Blowzabella\, Topette\, Anne Niepold\, and Roger Daltrey. \nConcertina wizard Rob Harbron leads the English Acoustic Collective Summer School\, released his own solo album Meanders in 2019\, and is known for his work with Emily Portman\, The Full English and Emma Reid. \nLeveret will celebrate 10 years on the road in 2023 with Forms\, a new album featuring new and traditional tunes played with the band’s trademark interaction and inventiveness.  Leveret’s music is firmly rooted in the English tradition but sounds fresh and new and over the years their intimate presentation style has charmed countless audiences\, helping the trio build a loyal following and demonstrating the enduring appeal and endless potential of the folk tune.  Listeners new and old can expect incredible musicianship and compelling presentation from a band at the top of their game. \n“What was remarkable was the delicacy and quality of their playing and the empathy between the three men\, watching each other intently as they progressed from repeated melody lines to subtle\, spontaneous variations. It was a magical set.” Robin Denselow\, The Guardian **** \n“This is all about the joy of playing and the intoxicating thrill of three masters of their craft … the empathy between them as the music ebbs and flows is exceptional; you can also see the smiles and winks between them. The feel-good warmth they generate is palpable.” Colin Irwin\, fROOTS \n“Classy players … their intuitive way with tunes is glorious” Mojo \n“You won’t find English folk music played better than this” R2 \n“Inspiringly good” fRoots \n“In folk music you need to hear the human. Leveret have got that trance-like thing – I’ve taken people to Leveret concerts who don’t necessarily have an interest in folk and they’ve totally got it.  There’s so much in those tunes and it takes real skill to see it and bring it out.  There’s a variation there between the three of them that goes on constantly.  Even if you don’t appreciate what traditional music is you can still be blown away by it…”  Verity Sharp [BBC Radio 3 Late Junction] \n“The intimacy and the intensity of this in the round experience was unlike anything I had heard all year. In folk\, it’s the sound of what’s to come” TheArtsDesk.com \n“Music of a rich\, sinewy immersion\, guided by a mutual sense of exploration\, space and a very English kind of swing.  It’s an intimate\, contemporary reinvention of the source material” The Guardian \n“This glimmering set of instrumentals cuts unfailingly elegant lines” The Sunday Times

SUMMARY:6 October: Dave Manington’s Riff Raff
DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of a UK-wide tour\, we welcome back Dave Manington’s Riff Raff who last played here in 2018. Bassist and composer Dave Manington is one of the mainstays of the London contemporary music scene. He has played with many of the pre-eminent jazz musicians in the UK and Europe and with various ensembles from South America to the Balkans. In 2005 he co-founded the Loop Collective to pool creative resources with other like-minded musicians and is a founder member of the highly acclaimed Yazz Ahmed Quartet and Tori Freestone’s Solstice. In 2022 he was nominated for an Ivor Novello award for best jazz composition. \n“[the music] grooves like hell with some thick mercurial riffs\, full of stops\, starts and turns yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum.” \nJAZZWISE \nDave Manington’s Riff Raff is his main ongoing project. This London-based super group is a dynamic ensemble of amongst the most creative musicians working in contemporary jazz\, featuring: softly surefooted vocalist Brigitte Beraha\, award-winning pianist Ivo Neame\,  the articulate Tomas Challenger on tenor\, John Scofield-like guitarist Rob Updegraff and cutting-edge  drummer Tim Giles. Their music is intimate and creative\, with a delicate interplay forged from many years performing together. Compositionally\, the music draws on a wide range of styles with traditional folk\, electronica and contemporary classical influences added to the mix with complex jazz harmonies and syncopated rhythms to create a soundscape that is quirky but engaging\, individualistic\, distinctly contemporary but always accessible. Several of their compositions feature lyrics from Brigitte\, while in others she sings wordless vocals\, often harmonizing with the sax line to great effect. \n“Riff Raff mix the leader’s clever composing with a formidable lineup\,…the soundscape embraces a 21st century sax-led cool school sound\, raw guitar-fusion\, diffident Wayne Shorteresque lyricism\, and vocals that showcase Beraha’s eloquent lyrics and inventiveness as a wordless improviser.” \nThe Guardian \nListen to music from their critically acclaimed 3rd album ‘Deep Challenger’: \nhttps://davemanington.bandcamp.com/track/free-spirit \nhttps://youtu.be/tNo43ZKbCjA \n

SUMMARY:28 September: The Oil Machine (film)
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our series of environmental themed films and talks\, Calstock Arts is pleased to show the thought provoking The Oil Machine. The distributors have not charged for the film hence the free admission and the film will be followed by a discussion on the themes raised. \nOil has been an invisible machine at the core of our economy and society. It now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil? \nBy highlighting the complexities of how oil is embedded in our society – from high finance to cheap consumer goods – The Oil Machine brings together a wide range of voices from oil\, company\, executives\, economists\, young activists\, workers\, scientists\, and pension fund managers. It considers how this machine can be tamed\, dismantled\, or repurposed. \nWe have 5 to 10 years to control our oil addiction\, and yet the licensing of new oilfields continues in direct contradiction with the Paris climate agreement. This documentary looks at how the drama of global climate action is playing out in the fight over North Sea oil. \nOil companies are convinced that they can continue to keep drilling while keeping to Net Zero ambitions through adopting new technologies\, such as carbon capture But climate scientists are deeply sceptical of the Net Zero concept and the time it would take for these technologies to be effective. \nThe Oil Machine explores the complexities of transitioning away from oil and gas as a society and considers how quickly we can do it. \nDirected by Emma Davie\, produced by Sonja Henrici \nRating PG

SUMMARY:Postponed until 2024 - 22 September: Banter
DESCRIPTION:Apologies but this event is postponed until next year. If you would like a refund on your tickets\, plse contact We Got Tickets. Otherwise they will advise you of the new date in due course. \n  \nBanter are Nina Zella\, Simon Care\, Tim Walker and Mark Jolley. Four fine musicians whose roots are firmly in the traditional English genre\, but who enjoy stretching the limits – in what a lot of people refer to as ‘the quirky Banter twist”.  Formed in 2015\, due to a happy accident\, they immediately realised their common love for traditional English song and dance and began to mess around with it. \nThey gained popularity\, or should it be notoriety\, very quickly and were soon performing at many of the country’s largest festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Cambridge FF\, Sidmouth FF and Towersey. \nWith the release of two albums\, YES and DARE\, between 2017 and 2019\, they received more plaudits in the music press including a Valentines day session on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 Folk Show. \nNow firmly established as one of the UK’s finest bands they have recorded their third studio album “Three”. Their first album of traditional material ….. but with that “twist” \nDescribed as “the world’s smallest big band”\, Banter go from strength to strength. \nwww.banter.com \nListen to them here

SUMMARY:17 September- Meridianum Ensemble @ 1515
DESCRIPTION:The Meridianum Ensemble is a unique musical collaboration\, bringing together top players from Portugal\, the UK and Morocco. The six musicians bring their individual styles and influences to the mix\, inspired by traditions from Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean to Portugal\, Scandinavia and beyond. Modal music\, improvisation and virtuosity are a feature of their gloriously entrancing infusion. Featuring traditional and original repertoire for Arabic oud\, Middle Eastern percussion\, cittern\, Persian Santur\, Swedish nyckelharpa and the mediaeval sounds of the hurdy-gurdy\, this blend is a sonic and visual treat. \nFounded in 2018 by UK-based Portuguese percussionist Ricardo de Noronha\, the idea was to draw his collaborators into one ensemble. Santur player Nuno Silva (the only non-UK member) resides in Porto and previously worked with Ricardo in several groups\, especially on the mediaeval scene in Portugal. In 2019 Nuno studied the santur in Iran. Through his interest in mediaeval music Ricardo met top UK hurdy-gurdy player Steve Tyler\, renowned for his rhythmic and inventive style. Violinist and nyckelharpist Griselda Sanderson and cittern player Louis Bingham performed in the Radial Band with Ricardo\, and Moroccan oud player Soufian Saihi’s Arabic classical musical style forms a bridge between them all to create a unique alliance. \nNuno Silva – Persian santur \nGriselda Sanderson – violin & nyckelharpa \nSoufian Saihi – oud \nSteve Tyler – hurdy-gurdy \nLouis Bingham – cittern & tambura \nRicardo de Noronha – percussion \nMeridianum Ensemble YouTube channel \n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/CWFYjaNJD84 \n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/uk_zRa-wNUM

Free entry as usual and you can show your appreciation as there will be a bucket for the band \nBish! Bash! Borscht! play Klezmer and traditional music from the Balkans and beyond. If you were unable to come to this showing & would like to see the repeat showing\, please email events@calstockarts.org \nHungry for Change\, the latest episode in the Cornwall’s Climate Stories series\, is presented by a forager who takes a fascinating and inspiring look at how we could ‘do food better’ – from the gleaners picking ‘waste’ crops in our fields to a microbiologist keen to get us all eating low-carbon insects and projects to grow food in unusual places. \nWhat we eat and the way we produce it is responsible for a huge part of our carbon emissions\, particularly since we import nearly 50% of all our food …. and waste one-third of it. \nLast summer’s heatwave\, which frazzled crops and left dairy cows suffering from heat stress\, showed just how vulnerable our intensive\, fossil fuel-driven food system is to climate shocks. \nDirected by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes. \nTasty tester food in the theme of the film by Katie and Crow from 7-7.45pm\, for a donation. No pre booking necessary but first come first served! \nThe film will be followed by a question and answer session.

SUMMARY:25 June: Wang-Luft-Fält Trio
DESCRIPTION:Having played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nBassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaboration with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, performances at major Jazz Festivals\,  appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio. \nWang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nHer third studio album- Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. The album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and two carefully selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike.  The Guardian \n  \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ ( BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now!  In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release in 2023. \n  \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. His lightness of touch\, coupled with a strong musical sensibility\, fits perfectly with this thrillingly dynamic ‘international’ trio. \n  \n‘Closeness’ has received much critical acclaim since its release in September 2020\, such as: \n\nAlbum of the year 2020 – Vårt Land (Norwegian newspaper)\n4/5 stars “She is one of the best contemporary jazz artists” – Dagens Industri (Swedish newspaper)\n**** and ‘Editor’s choice’ for Nov 2020 – Jazzwise (UK magazine)

SUMMARY:18 June: Taiko Drumming Workshop @ 1500 SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Taiko drums have been around for a couple of thousand years\, traditionally used in the background to keep the beat for dancers and singers during festivals or to create the sound effects offstage in Noh and Kabuki theatre.  As a performance art in its own right\, it is actually quite new\, having been developed in the 1950s by a Japanese jazz drummer\, Daihachi Oguchi.  Since then\, the art of taiko drumming has spread across the globe\, including the South West of England! \nTaiko South West comes under the umbrella of Kagemusha Taiko\, founded in 1998 by Artistic Director\, Jonathan Kirby.  Our Taiko Centre is near Newton Abbot in Devon\,  where we offer the company’s adult performing group\, Tano Taiko\, as well as taiko experiences for schools and other organisations throughout the South West. \nIn our workshops\, participants get to grips with the basics of taiko drumming\, try out some simple drills and learn a fun choreographed piece.  Whilst not marketed as therapeutic\, there are many benefits to taiko drumming:  it’s great physical exercise and good “brain gym”.  It’s also a lot of fun and can lead to a real sense of achievement. \nSuitable for all ages over 12. \nPrevious workshop participants have said: \n“A fantastic day.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to come again.  It’s definitely something I could get into.” \n“We had a great time. Thank you for the warm welcome.  If we weren’t so far away\, we’d definitely join you more regularly.” \nFor further information please see: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/TaikoSouthWest \nhttps://www.instagram.com/taikosouthwestuk/

SUMMARY:1 June: CFylm presents - The Enys Men
DESCRIPTION:Enys Men (Cornish for ‘Stone Island’) is a 2022 experimental folk horror film shot\, composed\, written and directed by Mark Jenkin. Shot on 16 mm film\, it stars Mary Woodvine\, Edward Rowe\, Flo Crowe and John Woodvine. \nThe film was shot during the COVID-19 lockdown\, and the crew prioritised creating a small carbon footprint during production. Enys Men premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and was well received by critics. \nSet in 1973 on an uninhabited island off the Cornish coast\, a wildlife volunteer’s daily observations of a rare flower turn into a metaphysical journey that forces her as well as the viewer to question what is real and what is nightmare. \nThe only feature that suggests a continuous\, even though highly speeded up\, flow of time is the appearance of a fruticose lichen growing on the flowers over three days\, and simultaneously on the protagonist’s body.

A range of delicious freshly baked cakes and scones will be available. \nEvent Capacity: 15 \n\n\n\n\nSamuel Bestwick is an artist and filmmaker currently based in Cornwall. Primarily employing the use of moving image\, his practice explores narrative in conjunction with place and social history\, often recontextualising these ideas within a modern context. Created for Bridge the Tamar\, a group exhibition hosted by MIRROR at Arts University Plymouth and curated by Hannah Rose and Elaine Sinclair\, Dowr Tamar / Great Water’ explores the evolution of the Tamar river’s landscape through time. With a musical score composed by The Worm\, the film catalogues humanity’s technological progression\, commercial expansion and environmental exploitation through the 22 bridges that cross the river. Starting as humble footbridges hidden amongst greenery\, the widening river soon features concrete constructions capable of carrying vehicles. From here the bridges become metal. Humanity’s influence continues to become more apparent\, small settlements make way for hamlets\, hamlets become villages\, villages become towns. Eventually\, the river reaches the industrial revolution’s Royal Albert bridge and 20th century’s subsequent Tamar bridge\, before finally opening up to the mass of water beyond. We are waiting to confirm\, but it is likely that Sam will be available to answer questions about his film after the screening. \nLey Roberts is a member of Drawn to the Valley and also runs the Limekiln Gallery in Calstock. Her figurative pen and ink drawings\, prints and etchings are inspired by the beautiful Tamar valley. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:21 May: Dowr Tamar / Great Water - a short film about the River Tamar @ 1500
DESCRIPTION:Join an exclusive screening of Samuel Bestwick’s ‘Dowr Tamar / Great Water\,’ a short film that uses archive footage to explore the evolution of the Tamar through time\, diving deep into the river’s landscape. \nSamuel Bestwick is an artist and filmmaker currently based in Cornwall. \n\n\n\n\n
