SUMMARY:25 June: Wang-Luft-Fält Trio
DESCRIPTION:Having played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nBassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaboration with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, performances at major Jazz Festivals\,  appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio. \nWang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nHer third studio album- Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. The album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and two carefully selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike.  The Guardian \n  \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ ( BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now!  In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release in 2023. \n  \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. His lightness of touch\, coupled with a strong musical sensibility\, fits perfectly with this thrillingly dynamic ‘international’ trio. \n  \n‘Closeness’ has received much critical acclaim since its release in September 2020\, such as: \n\nAlbum of the year 2020 – Vårt Land (Norwegian newspaper)\n4/5 stars “She is one of the best contemporary jazz artists” – Dagens Industri (Swedish newspaper)\n**** and ‘Editor’s choice’ for Nov 2020 – Jazzwise (UK magazine)

SUMMARY:23 June: Burd Ellen
DESCRIPTION:Burd Ellen is a project featuring Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts\, Green Ribbons) and Gayle Brogan (Pefkin\, Electroscope). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Innovative instrumentation\, drone and sound-wash support detailed vocal work to create a unique sonic atmosphere. \nThey self-released their debut album Silver Came in 2019. Their second album\, Says The Never Beyond\, is a collection of carols and wintersong that occupy the liminal space between sacred and secular\, connecting to the deep seasonal traditions of Britain and Ireland. The record was critically well received\, finding its spot in the top 10 of 2020 for many publications including The Guardian and Folk Radio UK. \nA Tarot Of The Green Wood is their third studio album\, released Oct 2022. Debbie Armour says “I’m a long time collector and lover of tarot\, and I’ve recently become drawn to the idea of finding parallels between interpretation of traditional song and the art of divination. Gayle and I have brought together a new collection of songs that reflect the ideas\, archetypes and imagery of the Major Arcana.” Developed on residency at Sage Gateshead\, the album also features guest appearances from Irish piper Ian Lynch (Fire Draw Near\, Lankum) and Newcastle-based composer Mark Wardlaw (Kenosist\, The Old Police House) \nBurd Ellen have appeared at Cambridge Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections\, Fanø Free Folk Festival\, Cafe Oto\, The Glad Cafe and many other stages in the UK and Europe. They are carving out a sonically adventurous niche\, but one that is informed by a deep love and respect for traditional song. \n“The most innovative duo in folk” – Folk Radio UK\n“Magnificent” – 8/10\, Uncut Magazine\n“One of the finest folk explorers” – The Wire Magazine\n“Wonderful!” – Cerys Matthews\, BBC Radio 6 Music\n“Dripping with strangeness and unease” – 5*\, The Guardian (Top 10 Folk Albums 2020) \n\nListen to Burd Ellen here: https://youtu.be/s2eNGep9hVo

SUMMARY:18 June: Taiko Drumming Workshop @ 1500 SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Taiko drums have been around for a couple of thousand years\, traditionally used in the background to keep the beat for dancers and singers during festivals or to create the sound effects offstage in Noh and Kabuki theatre.  As a performance art in its own right\, it is actually quite new\, having been developed in the 1950s by a Japanese jazz drummer\, Daihachi Oguchi.  Since then\, the art of taiko drumming has spread across the globe\, including the South West of England! \nTaiko South West comes under the umbrella of Kagemusha Taiko\, founded in 1998 by Artistic Director\, Jonathan Kirby.  Our Taiko Centre is near Newton Abbot in Devon\,  where we offer the company’s adult performing group\, Tano Taiko\, as well as taiko experiences for schools and other organisations throughout the South West. \nIn our workshops\, participants get to grips with the basics of taiko drumming\, try out some simple drills and learn a fun choreographed piece.  Whilst not marketed as therapeutic\, there are many benefits to taiko drumming:  it’s great physical exercise and good “brain gym”.  It’s also a lot of fun and can lead to a real sense of achievement. \nSuitable for all ages over 12. \nPrevious workshop participants have said: \n“A fantastic day.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to come again.  It’s definitely something I could get into.” \n“We had a great time. Thank you for the warm welcome.  If we weren’t so far away\, we’d definitely join you more regularly.” \nFor further information please see: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/TaikoSouthWest \nhttps://www.instagram.com/taikosouthwestuk/

SUMMARY:3 June: Trevor Babajack Trio [Bare Blues and Rural Roots]
DESCRIPTION:UK Blues Awards 2023 Winner – Best Acoustic Blues Act\n‘Howling Wolf meets Screaming Jay Hawkins…carried on the wings of wailing slide guitar’  Richard Wall – Blues in Britain \nSince first coming to prominence as one half of the multi-award-winning band ‘Babajack’\, Trevor Babajack Steger has established himself as a highly sought-after performer on the British Blues and Roots scene. His travels have taken him the length of the UK\, across Europe and Africa\, headlining Blues and Roots festivals\, and from little French cafés to The Royal Albert Hall. \nTrevor’s music is influenced by his passion for early rural Blues\, mixed with the sounds of rhythmic African roots\, in what can only be described as his own genre of original and seemingly improvised music\, that makes him a thrilling and unique artist.  He has an immediacy and charisma that draws you close to the music\, demanding your attention. His haunting voice\, style of slide guitar and harp playing has earnt him recognition in The UK Blues Awards\, The British Blues Awards and Blues & Roots Radio Awards as one of Britain’s best harmonica players and acoustic Blues artists. \nAs well as playing songs from his back catalogue\, Trevor will be performing music from his recently released album ‘Not Far To Go’. This is a new collection of self-penned\, original songs reflecting on life\, lust and disappointment\, which will make you perhaps laugh out loud\, simply cry but certainly tap your feet. He will be accompanied by deliciously soaring violin playing from Jo Chambers and the energetic and driving percussion of Jesse Benns\, enhancing the overall sound in a subtle but effective way. The only thing better than listening to Trevor\, is to watch him playing live\, to witness the transformation he undergoes during each performance. \nWatch: here and here \nListen: https://youtu.be/8NiZ73r94qU \n‘It’s easy to imagine the spirits of long-gone Blues legends catching a fleeting ride on Trevor’s music\, nodding in approval that their legacy is in safe hands’ Blues in Britain \n ‘Trevor Babajack Steger with only his guitar\, harp\, voice and stomp  box remind us how powerful a writer and performer he is.’ Liz Aitken – Blues Doodles \n‘Trevor’s vocal\, guitar and stomp skills combined with Jo Chambers on violin and Jesse Benns on cajon made sure we witnessed an incredible musical evening.’ The Coulston Club\, London (November 2022)

SUMMARY:1 June: CFylm presents - The Enys Men
DESCRIPTION:Enys Men (Cornish for ‘Stone Island’) is a 2022 experimental folk horror film shot\, composed\, written and directed by Mark Jenkin. Shot on 16 mm film\, it stars Mary Woodvine\, Edward Rowe\, Flo Crowe and John Woodvine. \nThe film was shot during the COVID-19 lockdown\, and the crew prioritised creating a small carbon footprint during production. Enys Men premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and was well received by critics. \nSet in 1973 on an uninhabited island off the Cornish coast\, a wildlife volunteer’s daily observations of a rare flower turn into a metaphysical journey that forces her as well as the viewer to question what is real and what is nightmare. \nThe only feature that suggests a continuous\, even though highly speeded up\, flow of time is the appearance of a fruticose lichen growing on the flowers over three days\, and simultaneously on the protagonist’s body.

A range of delicious freshly baked cakes and scones will be available. \nEvent Capacity: 15 \n\n\n\n\nSamuel Bestwick is an artist and filmmaker currently based in Cornwall. Primarily employing the use of moving image\, his practice explores narrative in conjunction with place and social history\, often recontextualising these ideas within a modern context. Created for Bridge the Tamar\, a group exhibition hosted by MIRROR at Arts University Plymouth and curated by Hannah Rose and Elaine Sinclair\, Dowr Tamar / Great Water’ explores the evolution of the Tamar river’s landscape through time. With a musical score composed by The Worm\, the film catalogues humanity’s technological progression\, commercial expansion and environmental exploitation through the 22 bridges that cross the river. Starting as humble footbridges hidden amongst greenery\, the widening river soon features concrete constructions capable of carrying vehicles. From here the bridges become metal. Humanity’s influence continues to become more apparent\, small settlements make way for hamlets\, hamlets become villages\, villages become towns. Eventually\, the river reaches the industrial revolution’s Royal Albert bridge and 20th century’s subsequent Tamar bridge\, before finally opening up to the mass of water beyond. We are waiting to confirm\, but it is likely that Sam will be available to answer questions about his film after the screening. \nLey Roberts is a member of Drawn to the Valley and also runs the Limekiln Gallery in Calstock. Her figurative pen and ink drawings\, prints and etchings are inspired by the beautiful Tamar valley. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:14 May: Jim Moray
DESCRIPTION:Should you care to look back over the past two decades of British folk music\, one musician in particular stands out for having a singular\, idiosyncratic vision that has rarely wavered in style and substance. Jim Moray may have garnered initial attention for his digitally-driven approach to traditional music\, but reflecting on his seven albums and numerous production credits it’s clear that imagination and invention are the real cornerstones of his work. \nThe cinematic vision of albums such as Skulk (2012)\, Upcetera (2016)\, and his game-changing debut Sweet England (2003) show just how far the old songs can be taken. His arrangements of traditional songs such as Gilderoy\, Horkstow Grange and Fair Margaret and Sweet William are regarded as amongst the classics of the folk genre\, while his treatment of the ballad Lord Douglas has become a must-learn for fingerstyle guitarists. \nAs Moray embarks on his third decade as a professional musician\, he can count career-defining performances at Glastonbury\, The Royal Albert Hall\, and WOMAD\, and has caught the attention of those in the know along the way. “I love this singer of old ballads”\, enthused none other than Iggy Pop\, no stranger to songs of love\, life and loss. 20 years in the business also means that his influence is being felt among a younger generation of folk musicians\, especially those who explore the wider canon and ways in which traditional music can be stretched. Frankie Archer recently spoke about how Moray’s work on Low Culture (2008) blew her mind. “It showed me for the first time what UK folk music could be”. \nNever satisfied with staying still\, the artist is still moving after shaking the folk world to its foundations twenty years ago. And in a genre where musicians reach their peak the older they get\, there’s a sense that he has only just begun \nwww.jimmoray.co.uk

SUMMARY:11 May: The Oxley-Meier Guitar Project
DESCRIPTION:Listen to interview on Radio Cornwall 1440 on 5th May 2023!! \nThe Oxley-Meier Guitar Project was established ten years ago\, following these two guitarist’s tenure in the unique quartet\, ‘Eclectica!‘ In that decade\, they have recorded 7 albums together\, ranging from duet to quintet formats and have performed literally hundreds of concerts together throughout the UK and Europe. \nThey are joined by Paul Cavaciuti on drums and Ralph Mizraki on bass. \nRegardless of the size of the ensemble\, Oxley & Meier have always maintained their two aims: \n– to write guitar-based music that is exciting\, engaging and fascinating to anybody interested in music. \n– to use an expansive range of instruments in order to deliver a stylistically wide ranging programme. \nTo achieve this\, they usually use ten different guitars at their gigs. These include more unusual instruments such as:  11-string Glissantar (fretless instrument\, based on the arabic lute – the oud)\, an Electric 12-string\, a Sitar guitar & a Fretless nylon-string \nThe soundscapes are very much influenced from their various travels\, this summarised by their strap-line: “soundscapes from Turkey to Brazil“. As a result\, Oxley and Meier have performed in many of the top venues in jazz\, world music and classical venues: Ronnie Scott’s\, Musicport Festival and The Wigmore Hall\, respectively. \nExpect an evening of joyous varied fare\, performed by these two seriously established musicians that The Observer described thus: \n“When it comes to empathy\, the duet of guitar virtuosi comes close to perfection” \nOr if you are a fan of the ECM supergroup\, Oregon\, this quote from Ralph Towner will resonate: \n“This album is a wonderful example of the high level of music that can be made by combining two great guitarists/composers/improvisers such as Pete and Nicolas. They have put together a feast of virtuosity\, delivered wit depth\, wit and joy” \nThe quartet will be performing brand-new music for this concert – as described above! \nThree live pieces: \nhttps://youtu.be/ar8FeO1sNxw \nhttps://youtu.be/b7uDr1ZrSJg \nhttps://youtu.be/VyMQR78j9iI

How he raised a sofa-loving wild boar piglet\, transported a raging bison bull across the UK\, got bitten by a Scottish wildcat and restored the ancient white stork to the Knepp Estate with Charlie Burrell and Isabella Tree. \nAfter a Shetland ewe captured a young Derek’s heart\, he grew up to become a farmer with a passion for ancient breeds. He gets stuff done. The story of his amazing work at Broadwoodwidger is highly entertaining but also a heartfelt plea for a wilder\, more inspiring Britain.’—Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall \n‘Derek Gow’s riotous adventures rescuing threatened species and releasing them for rewilding read like Gerald Durrell on steroids. SUMMARY:4 March: Charlotte Glasson Band
DESCRIPTION:“Versatile contemporary jazz and fusion saxophonist / multi-instrumentalist / composer plays diverse originals all laced with her own bluesy\, expressive sax work.”  Time Out – London \nSince winning the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at the Marlborough Jazz Festival\, the Charlotte Glasson Band have been wowing audiences at venues across the U.K.\, including the London Jazz Festival\, Love Supreme Festival and Pizza Express Live (Soho).  The band\, led by Charlotte a multi-instrumentalist and composer\, play mainly original music\, specialising in weaving together sounds from across the globe to create a brand of music defined by rhythm and melody\, a world of bird call and sunshine. \nStylistically\, Charlotte’s compositions draw on Latin rhythms\, New Orleans Mardi Gras\, Swing\, Arabic\, Spaghetti Western and Gypsy Jazz influences\, sensitively combined into something uniquely her own\, upbeat and bouncy on the surface but with interesting twists and turns as a sub-text. She uses the enormously varied instrumental resources at her disposal in an unfailingly imaginative way – her own armoury alone contains a small orchestra’s worth of sonic possibilities. \nWhen you add in contributions by such fine players as trombonist virtuoso Mark Bassey\, and legendary guitarist Chris Spedding\, this is a band who create a unique and uplifting experience\, filled with colourful grooves\, lush ballads and high energy swing. \n‘If you’ve ever wondered what smiles sound like\, this is it.’ (Jackie Hayden – Hot Press) \n“If you could bottle this band’s music\, how wonderful it would be to inhale it to start every day.” Express and Star\, Lichfield. \n“Multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Glasson will restore your faith in jazz. Witty\, exuberant and genre defying stuff” @LocalSCambridge \nListen to Charlotte and her band here: https://youtu.be/FXsiF2CfJaU \nAnd here: https://youtu.be/_Dk0_-CqC0U \nAnd here:https://youtu.be/y3l-kD2WX_Q

SUMMARY:3 March 2023: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required\, there is no mistaking that to a man\, they love their county with a passion. \nNow in their fifth year\, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, The Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth Week\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day. \n2022 will see the band take on a third concert tour of both Cornwall and Devon entitled “Songs of Hope” which the band feels is an appropriate name for the times we currently live in. \nThe band was formed from an Open Mic Night at their local\, The Countryman Inn near Launceston\, which is where the band’s name originates.  They soon found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for an emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire. \nIn addition to offering quality live entertainment on stage\, they have also been busy in the recording studio and have released three online EPs to date\, Cornish Lads Vol.1\, 2 and not unsurprisingly\, Cornish Lads Vol.3.                  \nThey also released their debut CD album\, “Trees On The Hill” a few years ago and have recently released their long-awaited second album\, “The River Rolls On”. \n“If you get the chance to see these guys (The Countrymen) in concert then take it\, you will not be disappointed” \nFor more info \nFacebook:        www.facebook.com/countrymenband \nInstagram:        @thecountrymenbandcornwall \nTwitter:             @thecountrymenband \nHashtags:         #cornishmusic #cornishfolk  #thecountrymen #songsofhope \n
