SUMMARY:25 May: Sherburn - Bartley - Sanders
DESCRIPTION:Following a chance meeting at Whitby Folk Festival in 1993\, Chris Sherburn (Concertina) and Denny Bartley (Vocals and Guitar) have been bringing their unique sound to audiences across Europe and America\, creating one of folk music’s most enduring partnerships. Their obvious rapport made them one of the busiest acts on the folk scene\, both as a duo and with their well-loved band\, Last Night’s Fun. Their soul-stirring songs\, exhilarating tunes and quick-witted banter ensures that no two concerts are ever the same.  \nIn 2016\, Chris and Denny joined forces with Emily Sanders (fiddle/viola and vocals) and have since become a well-established trio\, for the first time blending vocal harmonies\, and strings to underpin Chris and Denny’s unique sound\, as well as providing a female vocal for some songs\, and bringing a repertoire of English folk songs to complement the bands more Celtic roots.  \nEmily was a founder member of the acclaimed trio Isambarde. She has also toured with Merrymouth (Simon Fowler\, Lead Singer of Ocean Colour Scene) and regularly appears with Pete Morton and Chris Parkinson.  \nTheir latest album BEGUILE is the first to feature Chris\, Denny and Emily together\, and also some stellar guest performances from Martin Simpson and Andy Seward (Kate Rusby Band) and mastered by Phil Beer.  \n“Chris\, Denny and Emily sound good\, make you smile and are a great mix – a true chemistry lesson… Superb musicians of the highest order.” Alan Wood\, The Barn at Baston \n“Sherburn\, Bartley and Sanders are a joy to watch… This is what music is meant to be about.” Ant Miles\, Downend Folk Club \nChris Sherburn & Denny Bartley With Emily Sanders @Chester Folk Festival 2017 – YouTube \nRoseville Fair Performed By Chris Sherburn\, Denny Bartley And Emily Sanders – YouTube \nSherburn Bartley Sanders at Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2021 – YouTube \nChris Sherburn Denny Bartley & Emily Sanders @Gate To Southwell 2017 – YouTube \nWebsite: www.sherburnbartleysanders.com

SUMMARY:22 May: Espen Eriksen Trio
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are excited to be included in this prestigious tour\, which includes the far east (S Korea\, China & Hong Kong)\, Norway\, France and Calstock! Ok a  few others in the UK but none west of Bristol. \nEspen Eriksen Trio is one of the most popular piano trios in Europe. With it’s highly melodic and lyrical instrumentals and “less is more” approach\, the trio is often credited for its unique voice within today’s jazz scene by the international press. To quote BBC in their review of the trio’s second album “A wonderfully plaintive jazz record\, abandoned to the lost art of melodic minimalism\, stripped back and beautifully near bare. No smoke and mirrors\, just the graceful chemistry of superb musicians at the top of their game”.  \nEspen Eriksen Trio also has an ongoing collaboration with the British saxophone star Andy Sheppard\, resulting in two studio albums and multiple sold out tours in Europe\, including two concerts at the London Jazz Festival broadcasted by BBC Radio.  \nAfter 17 years\, seven critically acclaimed records and worldwide touring\, the trio is tighter than ever and has reached an almost telepathic level of interplay. And a global audience certainly have embraced the trio’s unique sound built upon a rich repertoire all signed pianist Eriksen. Captivating and lyrical\, often melancholic and uplifting at the same time\, these are all real tunes.  \nSo\, in Jazzwise’s words; get ready for “one of the most unified\, individual and recognizable group sounds in European jazz” \n“Superb musicians at the top of their game”  – BBC \nEspen Eriksen: piano/compositions \nLars Tormod Jenset: double bass \nAndreas Bye: drums \nFor further information and to listen to the trio – click here \n

SUMMARY:9 May: Power to the People - Cornwall's Climate Stories
DESCRIPTION:Power to the People is the latest film in the superb Cornwall’s Climate Stories series directed by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes. \nBryony will also be in attendance to provide more in depth background to the making of this film\, she will also be accompanied by experts from the film to answer your energy questions. \nWith fantastic resources of wind\, sun\, tides\, geothermal heat and critical minerals\, Cornwall could drive the whole country’s clean energy revolution. \nHowever\, the UK’s 100-year-old electricity grid means this potential can’t currently be harnessed – while huge numbers of local people are living in poorly insulated homes they can’t afford to heat. \nPower to the People explores the exciting opportunities and huge challenges facing us as we wean ourselves off fossil fuels – from a farmer who’s found a novel way to combine food production with solar panels\, opportunities to use our historic heritage to power the future\, and projects to harness the amazing untapped heat 5km down in the Earth’s crust. \nQ&A panel  \nSimon Miller from the Wadebridge renewable energy network\nMatt Shepherd from ZLC Energy\nAndy Neville climate advisor Stoke Climsland \nFor more information  about Bryany’s films: https://www.cornwallclimate.org

SUMMARY:3 May: Keith James in concert - The Songs of Leonard Cohen @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:‘There is a crack in everything\, that’s how the light gets in’ Cohen’s most memorable and visionary line from his song ANTHEM. If ever there was a sentence in modern poetry to reflect on and give hope and understanding to us all\, it is this line. This Concert begins with ANTHEM. \nThese remarkable songs – stripped back\, honest\, naked and sensual. \nEnigmatic\, mysterious and sub textural\, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character\, with an exact sense of prose\, wry humour and the courage to wrestle with the unspoken\, forgiving human frailty and indulgence with the stroke of each word. \nThe chilling announcement of Leonard’s death marked the end of an era. His music befriended an entire generation. Within every line of his writing\, he has been challenging us to listen more carefully\, speak more thoughtfully\, think more deeply and recognize our own vulnerability. Our World misses him very much. \nWith a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable\, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith has performed an extensive tour of this concert in Theatres and Arts Centres across the UK\, giving over 550 concerts to more than 200\,000 people. This has proved to be one of the greatest honours in Keith James’ 40 year career in music. \nIncluded in the concert are Cohen’s well-known songs: Famous Blue Raincoat\, Sisters of Mercy\, Suzanne\, and Hallelujah alongside his rarer and profound writing such as If it be your will\, Joan of Arc and Secret Life. Also included are Keith’s dramatic performances based on the work of Federico Garcia Lorca – Cohen’s greatest influence. Keith has also transcribed into song one of Leonard’s poems from his collection ‘Book of longing’ written whilst on retreat during the 1990s. \n‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent \n‘Keith James’ Concert was truly memorable. My tears started as soon as he introduced the first song\, and I came away thinking the human spirit will not be defeated. Currently on tour across the UK. Catch him if you can. He is such a lovely human being and so talented’ \nThe Hay Festival \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUmckhMIv_U               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-SAMwUrnPc \nKeith James’ website  \nwww.keith-james.com

SUMMARY:25 April: SOLD OUT Screening- SIX INCHES OF SOIL with Marina O'Connell
DESCRIPTION:Six Inches of Soil is a British independent full feature documentary shining a spotlight on soil health and regenerative farming. It tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil\, our health and provide for local communities. The aims of the film are to sound the alarm on a broken system\, but to also give hope that there is a way to fix it; to inspire farmers to adopt agroecological and regenerative farming practices; and to encourage consumers\, food corporations and policymakers to support their efforts.  \nMarina O’Connell will be leading in the question and answer session after the film and will also talk about her farm\, regenerative farming and working to increase the number of farms adopting more soil friendly farming practices. \nShe is the author of “Designing regenerative Food Systems\, and why we need them now” – A unique toolkit of resilient food production systems\, including biodynamic\, organic\, agroforestry\,  regenerative\, agroecological and permaculture methods\, with illustrated case studies\, references and resources. \nHalf the food we eat in the UK is produced by about 180\,000 farmers\, who manage 70% of our land.  Current “industrial” mainstream farming practices significantly contribute to soil degradation\, biodiversity loss and climate change. Regenerative farming practices\, (within an agroecological system) promote healthier soils\, provide healthier\, affordable food\, restore biodiversity and sequester carbon.  \nSix Inches of Soil is a story of three new farmers on the first year of their regenerative journey to heal the soil and help transform the food system – Anna Jackson\, a Lincolnshire 11th generation arable and sheep farmer; Adrienne Gordon\, a Cambridgeshire small-scale vegetable farmer; and Ben Thomas\, who rears pasture fed beef cattle in Cornwall.  \nAs the trio of young farmers strive to adopt regenerative practices and create viable businesses\, they meet seasoned mentors – John Pawsey in Suffolk\, Nic Renison in Cumbria and Marina O’Connell in Devon – who help them on their journey.  \nThey are joined by other experts – Henry Dimbleby\, Ian Wilkinson\, Mike Berners-Lee\, Vicki Hird\, Dee Woods\, Tim Lang\, Hannah Jones\, Satish Kumar\, Nicole Masters\, Tom Pearson – providing wisdom and solutions from a growing movement of people who are dedicated to changing the trajectory for food\, farming and the planet. \nThe 96 minute film\, with its original music score and beautiful animation\, was completed at the end of 2023\, and was launched at the Oxford Real Farming Conference on 4th January 2024. It was also shown at COP 28 in December 2023 through EIT Food Systems. \n“WOW @sixinchesofsoil what an amazing 🤩 movie! I never thought I could watch a movie about soil and get emotional” Michael Aggrey at COP28 \nhttps://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/03/the-regenerative-farm-working-to-improve-soil-without-fertilisers? \n

SUMMARY:20 April: Sold Out Martin Simpson
DESCRIPTION:“Martin Simpson has transcended borders and oceans to quietly become a superb storyteller and musician of great depth and unquestionable taste.” Stephen Fearing \nThe remarkable intimate solo performances Martin gives go from strength to strength – every gig is a masterclass. He travels the length and breadth of the UK and beyond\, giving rapt audiences passion\, sorrow\, love\, beauty\, tragedy and majesty through his playing. \n“What’s it like being the best guitar player in the world…?” Martin’s modesty and grace prevented him from answering this BBC Radio 4 interviewer’s question recently\, but the facts speak for themselves. \n40 years after he recorded his first album\, Golden Vanity\, in 1976\, Martin is known as a guitarist of formidable talent. Equally at home playing English traditional folk\, American folk and blues and his own compositions\, he is consistently named as one of the very finest fingerstyle guitar players in the world. \nHe is listed in Gibson Guitars’ Top 30 Acoustic Guitarists of all time\, and Acoustic Guitar readers voted him number 12 guitarist in the world in 2005. \nUniversally acclaimed as one of the finest ever acoustic and slide guitar players\, and a fine banjo-picker to boot\, his solo shows bear witness to an artist at the very top of his game. Whether interpreting material from tradition or singing his own potent self-penned songs\, Simpson is a remarkable storyteller: captivating and profoundly moving. His own songwriting produced the poignant ‘Never Any Good’\, from Prodigal Son\, 2007’s Folk Album of the Year. \nMartin continues to collaborate with a dazzling array of people from across the musical spectrum: Jackson Browne\, Martin Taylor\, June Tabor\, Richard Hawley\, Bonnie Raitt\, Danny Thompson\, David Hidalgo\, Danú\, Richard Thompson and Dom Flemons are among the great musicians he has worked with. \nIn recent years\, he has been a lynchpin in the award-winning Full English\, The Elizabethan Sessions and\, in 2015\, recorded Murmurs\, an exciting new album with Andy Cutting and Nancy Kerr. Martin’s latest solo album entitled Trails and Tribulations was released in September 2017 on Topic Records. Album guests include Andy Cutting\, Kathryn Tickell\, Nancy Kerr and John Smith. In September 2019 Topic Records will release Martin’s new album ‘Rooted’\, a mixture of Simpson originals and traditional songs and tunes with guest appearances from friends old and new. As ever Martin is pushing in new directions\, expect exquisite ensemble playing and solo magic. \nHe has had the most nominations of any performer in the 18 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards\, an astonishing 32 times\, 13 of those as Musician of the Year\, winning that particular accolade twice. \nA virtuoso player without question\, but above all Martin Simpson conveys his diverse treasure trove of material from the heart\, performing with rare subtlety\, intensity and honesty. A true master of his art. \nPraise for ‘Rooted’:  \n“Every track cuts like glass. The folk singer and guitarist continues his winning streak.” Sunday Times \n“Martin Simpson is a superb teller of a song. You just have to listen to the opener on this double album\, his own composition\, Trouble Brought Me Here\, to appreciate how his articulation brings the substance of a song alive\, borne on his flowing guitar or banjo accompaniment.” The Scotsman   \n“Martin is in a class of his own. He is such an expressive player; he is ingenious in his use of the guitar. You can listen to one of his songs and three or four minutes in\, he has only used the top four strings and not even played a bass note yet\, and when he does\, it feels like an orchestra coming in. His clarity of playing is just amazing.” Jackson Browne \n“One of the virtuoso instrumentalists of the English music scene” ‘Sounds better than ever’ **** 4 Stars The Guardian \n“Simpson has become a fine interpreter of traditional and other songs\, as well as a notable writer of his own.” The Times \n‘Simpson’s latest is a potent blend of the highest calibre…Simpson has never sung or played better’ Acoustic Magazine \n‘One of our finest traditional musicians\, Simpson’s latest album offers a roving overview of his talents’ **** 4 Stars Uncut \n‘An excellent collection of material drawn from both sides of the Atlantic handled with loving care by Simpson and aided by some of the biggest names in folk’ **** 4 Stars Maverick \n  \nListen to Martin here: https://youtu.be/x_PbXKWJPg4?si=N3iqCYR8c5Do0AQD \n

SUMMARY:April 14: One Writers’ Group: Three Routes to Publication @ 6pm
DESCRIPTION:WEST COUNTRY AUTHORS TO SHARE TRICKS OF THE TRADE \nThree Devon authors\, who are all members of the same writing group\, will be sharing their experience of the rocky road to publication\, in an attempt to help other writers get published. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled to welcome\, Yaara Lahav Gregory\, Anna Lunk\, and Sophie Pierce\, in conversation  at the Old Chapel  with their One Writers’ Group: Three Routes to Publication. \nAnna Lunk\, a one time resident of Calstock and member of Girl’s Own Theatre lives in Staverton\, while Sophie Pierce and Yaara Lahav Gregory live in Ashburton. They are all members of Ashburton Writers’ Group. \nAll three have had books published in the last year\, but know what a lonely business writing is\, and how difficult it is to get published. The trio will share their experiences\, reading extracts from their books\, talking about their journeys to publication and discussing the support and encouragement they received from their writing group. \nTheir books are very different: Yaara’s Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) is a novel set in 1970s Israel\, but which also incorporates life in Devon. Anna’s novel Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) is the story of a young girl navigating life on her own after being in care\, while Sophie’s memoir The Green Hill: Letters to a Son (Unbound)  is about the sudden death of her son Felix\, and the role of the Devon landscape in her journey of grief. \nSays Anna: “All writers know how difficult it is to get published. For many years\, we’ve all been working away\, mostly on our own\, so being part of a writer’s group has been an enormous source not just of support\, but of sharing of information. \nYaara is delighted the group have found success\, and says writers should never give up. “Who would have thought that all three of us would publish books in the same year\, after so many years of hard work not to mention disappointments!” \nFurther info on the authors and books \nYaara Lahav Gregory’s novel Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) explores the political landscape of 1970s Israel through the story of a young girl in a kibbutz community.  Many years later her daughter is living in Devon and trying to make sense of absences in her family’s history.  Both a coming of age novel and an exploration of clashing ideologies Night Swimming in the Jordan is a portrayal of a country in conflict seen through a young girl’s eyes. \n In Anna Lunk’s Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) Amie\, a young woman suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is sheltering in a derelict cottage in woodland above a Scottish loch.  She has run out of money and is distrustful of the outside world\, but is none the less determined to live life on her own terms.  The novel follows Amie’s first few weeks as she struggles to survive against the odds;\, lonely\, but deeply connected to the natural world. The reader is immersed in her west coast surroundings\, walking in her footsteps. \nSophie Pierce’s The Green Hill\, letters to a son (Unbound) was inspired by the sudden death of her son Felix\, a young man with his life before him.  The book is a celebration of the restorative power of nature and is deeply rooted in the landscapes of South Devon. It explores how beauty\, a sense of place and the passing seasons can help us contend with our own mortality.  Sophie’s previous books\, co-written with Matt Newbury\, include Wild Swimming Torbay \, Wild Swimming Walks Cornwall\, Wild Swimming Walks Dorset and East Devon\, and  Wild Swimming Walks Dartmoor and South Devon.

SUMMARY:23 March- Tom McConville and Michael Biggins
DESCRIPTION:Tom McConville and Michael Biggins are amongst the best traditional musicians around today. Between them\, these virtuoso musicians have won BBC Musician of the Year prizes in both England and Scotland. \nTom‘s fiddle and Michael’s piano and accordion playing are amongst the finest there is – powerful and exciting with a range of songs performed in great style. They play a variety of music including Irish\, Scottish\, bluegrass and jazz\, all performed with a great sense of style\, verve and humour! \nThe sum of their talents\, combined with Tom’s rich singing\, is astounding and has left their audiences spellbound by their skill\, passion and rare sense of on-stage connection. Their sell-out concerts are highly entertaining\, so don’t miss your chance to see them here at Calstock. \n“One of the greatest violinists I’ve ever heard and by far the biggest influence in my music – A true master” – Seth Lakeman on Tom McConville \n“Two fantastic musicians and singers\, the best night we have had in a long time!” – Richmond Theatre Royal \n“The very best in our concert series” – Theatre by the Lake\, Keswick \n“Absolutely stunning playing and singing” – Helmseley Arts Centre \nAbout Tom McConville \nTom was born on Tyneside and brought up in a pub on the famous Scotswood Road with clientele drawn from the Irish and Scottish communities. This is where he first experienced traditional singing and fiddle music; the Hornpipes of James Hill amongst his first influences. 50 years on\, Tom McConville is widely acknowledged as THE authority on the music of James Hill and produced the first CD devoted entirely to Hill’s compositions. \nTom’s musical journey started in the North East folk clubs in the early 70s. Newcastle’s thriving Irish scene provided the opportunity\, with his first band\, to support Sean McGuire\, John Doonan\, The Fureys\, Boys of the Lough and even a lock-in with The Dubliners. Tom still credits the legendary Sean McGuire\, the fiddle genius from Belfast\, for teaching him his bowing techniques. \nTurning professional in 1974\, he joined Bob Fox in a duo then folk/rock band Magna Carta to play all over Europe. A memorable partnership with Kieron Halpin produced two award winning albums and top billing at The Cambridge Folk Festival. His next group Dab Hand made several visits to the USA where Tom met with another of his hero fiddlers\, Byron Berline. After a spell with Syncopace and a partnership with guitarist Chris Newman\, Tom spent the next 11 years recording & touring with Northumbrian piper Pauline Cato. \nEvery new venture brought great success and immense respect from his peers and public alike. Throughout his many collaborations he has continued his solo show at venues large and small. “A sandpaper-dry wit\, eye-watering skill on the fiddle\, great vocals… you just can’t help feeling that a performance by Tom is like visiting an old friend”  is how one folk club organiser describes him. \n2006 saw Tom working with Scots instrumentalist of the year\, Aaron Jones and All-Ireland Champion flute\, fiddle and whistle ace Claire Mann. Along with Kieran Boyle\, Peter Tickell\, Dave Wood & Kevin McGuire\, Tom completed a stunning solo CD\, Tommy on the Bridge. Musically brilliant\, it attracted great critical acclaim. Two more solo albums followed: Tommy on Song and Tommy on the Road. Tours with these albums played a major part in Tom being voted Musician of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \nRecently Tom has travelled extensively as a duo with David Newey and with three and four piece line ups featuring David\, Shona Kipling\, Phil Murray and Andy Watt. Renowned for his musical accompaniments\, Tom has also played on hundreds of albums\, working with the likes of Barbara Dickson\, Richard Thompson\, Allan Taylor and Lindisfarne. Whilst he has shared stages throughout the world with Stephan Grappelli\, Sean McGuire\, Mark O’Connor\, Paul Brady and The Chieftains\, Tom has never forgotten his roots and is as happy in the intimate atmosphere of a small folk club as he is at the largest festivals. Tom McConville is a world-class act! \nAbout Michael Biggins \nMichael is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Newcastle upon Tyne but now residing in Glasgow. He currently plays and tours with TRIP\, The Canny Band\, Tom McConville\, Northern Company and Irish Celtic – Spirit of Ireland Dance Show. \nMichael became BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year for 2021. \nMichael  graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow under the tutelage of Professor Sinae Lee on piano. Prior to this\, he studied at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied with Graham Caskie. Michael also studied with respected pianists Eileen Bown and Jean Armstrong\, who are based in Newcastle \nAs well as performing\, Michael also teaches piano\, piano accordion and music theory and has done for several years. \nListen to them here \n
