He then became a vicar in Yorkshire\, Essex and Devon and devoted his time to his love of folk music\, country traditions and the macabre… \nJim has been a long-term admirer of Baring-Gould and includes many of his songs in his popular shows based on songs of Dartmoor.  \n“It’s fascinating to see how many songs he collected found their way into his Dartmoor books.  It’s also quite eerie to see how many other songs fit the mood of his books on ghosts\, werewolves\, myths and his classic Gothic novels”\, he said. \nMiranda added: “We’re really excited about having found a unique and enjoyable way of bringing all of his work together in a show which we think will engage audiences and leave them fascinated and entertained.” \nJohn Palmer said: “It’s surprising that someone who was such a prominent public figure in his day has almost disappeared today. Then you will have seen Marcus Williams\, Curator of National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled he is coming to talk to us about ocean conservation\, the National Marine Aquarium and his role as the curator at the largest public aquarium in the UK. Marcus will also focus on the importation of an olive ridley turtle that was featured in the Secrets of the Aquarium series. \nMarcus Williams is the Curator of the National Marine Aquarium which is the largest public aquarium in the UK. As an aquarium it is unique because it is part of the Ocean Conservation Trust\, a charity that focusses on connecting people with the Ocean. DESCRIPTION:Following the extremely successful workshop in June 2023\, the Taiko Drummers  are returning to Calstock Arts by popular demand to give another workshop followed by a performance of their own. \n(https://www.taikosouthwest.org.uk/) \nTaiko drums have been around for a couple of thousand years\, traditionally used in the background to keep the beat for dancers and singers during festivals or creating the sound effects offstage in Noh and Kabuki theatre. As a performance art\, it is relatively new\, having been developed in the 1950s by the Japanese jazz drummer Daihachi Oguchi. From Renaissance lute music to flamenco-inspired songs from Spain\, the concert will feature a wide range of styles and periods and will include some of their own arrangements\, bringing a fresh approach to some of the most loved repertoire for the voice. \nThe duo has already brought their shared enjoyment of the intimate and expressive nature of voice and guitar to a wide variety of audiences such as ‘Live Music Now Scotland Artists’ and ‘International Guitar Foundation Young Artists’\, including performances at such prestigious venues as the National Gallery of Scotland\, the National Museum of Scotland\, St Giles Cathedral\, Bristol Cathedral and London’s Kings Place. \n“Ines and Ross had a great connection together as a duo and won the audience over with their energetic and charming performance. As a chamber musician he is a member of Quartet Malamatina who performed at the UN Climate Conference\, toured the UK and Canada in 2023 and performed live for the BBC. He teaches guitar and musicianship at the University of St Andrews. \n  \nInes is a Scottish soprano\, with a Master in Vocal Performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2022\, she made her German debut as Adele in Lyric Opera Studio Weimar’s Production of Die Fledermaus and in the summer of 2023 she toured with Opera Bohemia as Kate in Madame Butterfly and was regarded as “both vocally and visually very persuasive” by Edinburgh Music Review. She has performed several solo roles for Scottish Opera Young Company and her performance as Amore received praise for having “confidence\, consistency and fluency” by Andrew Clark in Opera Magazine. Ines has a keen interest in early music and is the founder and director of the Avra Baroque Ensemble. SUMMARY:4 October: Gallery Bar Special-The Buckstone Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Buckstone Trio – Cool Jazz for any Occasion! \n In The Beginning: \nThe Buckstone Trio was created when Martin Roberts and Simon Keates met and started chatting while waiting for a takeaway outside the Drake Manor Inn in Buckland Monachorum during the second Covid lockdown. A mutual interest in Jazz was discovered and the idea of forming a band was discussed. To date we had Martin on Keyboard and Simon (who is also a classical French horn player) on drums and we just needed a bass. \nSix months later\, after spreading the word\, we met Mark – a potential double bass player. Mark (a classical player) had little knowledge of Jazz or improvisation and found himself on a steep learning curve but as he has a great musical ear\, he soon picked it up – and started to enjoy himself! \nWe start gigging and the Trio grows: \nOur first gig was at the old Chapel in Buckland Monachorum which is where we rehearse but we needed a name. Martin lives in Buckland and Simon and Mark are based in nearby Crapstone. So\, we decided on The Buckstone Trio … (a village name combination that is usable!) \nOur next gig was for the Crapstone Street party celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee from which some people booked us for future gigs including specific events such as a wedding alongside other private parties. \nJane attended our first gig and asked if she could sing with us. She does a great job and so is appointed as the vocalist for when we require one! We also sometimes invite guest instrumentalists to join us to bring extra colour into our performances\, so we are now occasionally The Buckstone Trio plus Jane & Guests! \nThe Trio with and without the guests\, start to receive more bookings in ever wider locations. Some venues even request repeat performances as they were so enjoyable the first time. The Trio have now played in most of the local villages and extended out to Tavistock and Plymouth including the Plymouth Jazz Club. We are now receiving regular bookings and our reputation grows accordingly. \nWhy Cool Jazz? \nThe Buckstone Trio do not adhere to any specific genre of Jazz but like to play music that people of all ages can relate to\, preferably in a relaxed atmosphere where they can talk\, drink\, dance and have a good time. We aim to play “accessible” jazz that anyone can relate to without compromising the ethos of Jazz! We have some supporters (fans?) that have attended virtually all our gigs\, frequently with their whole family and they keep coming back for more. \nWe perform music from all genres including Trad/Swing/Bebop/Funk/Pop and Folk giving them a jazz feel while playing tunes that many people recognise. Our primary goal is that all our performances have great rhythms while being memorable with a sense of fun giving our audiences a wonderful time.

We then go to see the show which features a magic tree surrounded by hundreds of flower petals. Many surprises await our young audience during the show. \nPetals and Tales is the story of the Flowerpot Man\, a magical tale that encourages children to allow wonderful\, incredible and improbable things to be a part of their lives. \nPetals & Tales is a collaboration between Panta Rei Danseteater (Norway) and the Korean company SangSang Maru. DESCRIPTION:Man has intervened in nature and his effect has been profound. Calstock Arts is proud to present two speakers looking at aspects of this – Michael Head and Dale Wood \nVet\, Michael (Spike) Head will look at: \n‘The Challenges and Solutions of Dairying in the ‘New World’ \nMichael will cover the changes in the dairy industry\, both local and global\, that have occurred through his career. With the environment and sustainability in mind references will be made to cow health\, medicine use and the management of the environment. The talk is sure to generate discussion. \nApiarist\, Dale Wood will speak on: \n‘Honey Bees…and Almost Everything Else’ \nHoney bees are amazing creatures. Their life cycle from egg to adult is a biological wonder. The evolution started when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. They came through several mass extinctions and they survive still despite the damage done to their habitat. This touches on many aspects of honeybee life\, and the struggles imposed on them\, often by us. \nMichael Head (aka Spike) qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994. He has a Certificate in Cattle Health and Production and a Diploma in Bovine Reproduction. Michael’s first job was in St Columb Major from where he moved to Somerset stayed until his return three years ago to support farmers both sides of the Tamar. He now works locally and nationally as a veterinary trainer. Michael has travelled extensively\, with a couple of short trips to Mozambique and Uganda training farmers and advisors in animal health and a project in Trinidad and Tobago where he investigated a tropical disease in humans and was a ‘doctor’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a keen birdwatcher. \nDale Wood is a retired teacher who started beekeeping on a whim just a few years before retirement. Once free from the shackles of a daytime job\, colony numbers grew rapidly and after 12 years of beekeeping\, numbers now are around the 25 to 30 mark. His eight apiaries are sited in the Upton Cross area of SE Cornwall. Dale is a trustee and council member of Cornwall Beekeeping Association\, he is the apiary  manager for Kit Hill beekeeping group and he runs weekly apiary sessions and a ‘”Beekeeping for Beginners” course. \n*Both speakers have most kindly agreed that all proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to funding the purchase of a new projector for the main hall at Calstock Arts. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Sadly Laura has been advised not to travel for health reasons so has had to postpone this concert. She will give us new dates as soon as she is able to travel again. \n  \nAfter an outstanding performance in April of last year\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back Laura\, winner of the coveted  Andrés Segovia Prize\, in November\, 2022.  In addition to 1st prize\, she was also awarded the special prize for the best interpretation of the obligatory work all competitors were asked to perform during the week-long competition. \nLaura is German/Belgian. She discovered her passion for playing the guitar when she was eight years old and made her orchestral debut\, playing Rodrigo’s famous ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’\, aged 15. A year later she was one of the youngest students ever to begin studying for the Bachelor of Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. \nIn 2019\, she won the scholarship of the prestigious German Music Competition open for all instruments\, one of Germany’s highest accolades for a young musician. \nLaura’s concert career took off following her performance at the Gasteig\, Munich\, in the internationally acclaimed ‘Winners and Masters’ series. That brought her to the attention of German music lovers\, and since then\, Laura has appeared at important festivals and concert halls in Germany\, including Bonn’s famous Beethoven Festival and the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker. \nIn the last year\, Laura has enhanced her musical career with many new achievements.  She has won the coveted Leonhard and Ida Wolf Prize for music of the city of Munich and has played important concerts in Germany with the Luneburg\, Heidelberg and Odessa Symphony Orchestras. DESCRIPTION:One Life is a biographical drama film directed by James Hawes. Based on the true story of British humanitarian Nicholas Winton\, the film alternates between following Anthony Hopkins as a 79-year old Winton reminiscing on his past\, and Johnny Flynn as a 29-year old Winton attempting to help groups of Jewish children in German-occupied Czechoslovakia to hide and flee in 1938–39\, just before the beginning of World War II. Helena Bonham Carter\, Lena Olin\, Romola Garai\, Alex Sharp and Jonathan Pryce co-star in supporting roles. \nWhen 29-year-old London stockbroker Nicholas Winton visits Czechoslovakia in 1938\, just weeks after the Munich Agreement was signed\, he encounters families in Prague who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria. They are living in poor conditions\, with little or no shelter or food and in fear of the invasion of the Nazis. Winton is introduced to Doreen Warriner\, head of the Prague office of the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia (BCRC). Horrified by the conditions in the refugee camps\, Winton decides to save Jewish children himself. Actively supported by his mother Babette\, herself a German-Jewish migrant who has since converted to the Church of England\, he overcomes bureaucratic hurdles\, collects donations and looks for foster families for the children brought to England. Many of them are Jews who are at imminent risk of deportation. A race against time begins as it is unclear how long the borders will remain open before a probable Nazi invasion. \nFifty years later\, in 1988\, Winton\, now 79 years old\, cleans up some of the clutter in his office\, which his wife Grete asked him to do. He finds his old documents in which he recorded his work for the BCRC\, with photos and lists of the children they wanted to bring to safety. Winton still blames himself for not being able to save more. At lunch with his old friend Martin\, Winton thinks about what he should do with all the documents. He is considering donating them to a Holocaust museum\, but at the same time he wants to draw some attention to the current plight of refugees\, so he does not do it. \nThe documents end up in the hands of the That’s Life! production team\, a TV show produced by the BBC with presenter Esther Rantzen. Winton is invited onto the show and asked to sit in the audience. That’s Life surprises Winton by inviting some of the children he helped save onto the show to meet him. \nCertificate: ​12

This dance between the past and the present is what makes James’ heart beat when performing. \nChoosing to reject effects pedals altogether\, he chooses from a quiver of instruments including a beloved custom made 6 string cigar-box guitar called “The Weight” after the Band’s classic song; a National Style 0 resonator; 1950s Harmony Silvertone and his Bulwark Guild dreadnought acoustic; all in various traditional open tunings. Further study took her to Paris\, then to IMS Prussia Cove and on to the International Menuhin Academy in Switzerland. She subsequently left the UK for Jerusalem\, studying and performing a wide variety of musical traditions and working with musicians on the vibrant Israeli jazz scene\, such as Avishai Cohen (trumpet)\, Omer Avital (bass)and Yasmin Levy (vocals). Since returning to the UK\,  Shirley has firmly established herself on both the jazz and world music scenes\, playing with many of the leading exponents of these genres\, including Gilad Atzmon (saxophone/clarinet)\, Neil Cowley (piano)\, Antonio Forcione (guitar)\, Nicolas Meier (guitar)\, Maya Youssef (quanun) and Alice Zawadzki (violin/vocals). As well as her trio\, Shirley has several other ongoing projects\, including a sextet\, Melange (a world music group) and a classical improvisation duo with pianist Ben Smith. \n  \nShirley is also a keen educator. She is Professor of Musicianship and Improvisation at the Royal College of Music\, Lecturer at Kent University and teaches for Trinity Laban Conservatoire and the RCM Junior Department. DESCRIPTION:Following a chance meeting at Whitby Folk Festival in 1993\, Chris Sherburn (Concertina) and Denny Bartley (Vocals and Guitar) have been bringing their unique sound to audiences across Europe and America\, creating one of folk music’s most enduring partnerships. Their obvious rapport made them one of the busiest acts on the folk scene\, both as a duo and with their well-loved band\, Last Night’s Fun.
