SUMMARY:15 February: Passacaglia Duo - Baroque pipes and Harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Passacaglia is an award-winning baroque chamber ensemble that performs in several guises ranging from a duo format to a multi-instrument line up\, performing music by some of the greatest composers of the eighteenth century\, as well as introducing audiences to new discoveries! With over 25 years of performing and recording experience\, Passacaglia brings the music of the baroque era to life with a range of exciting\, colourful and engaging programmes. \nWe welcome back Passacaglia\, who last performed for us in 2022\, but this time as a duo\, featuring Annabel Knight (recorders\, flute) and Robin Bigwood (harpsichord). \nAnnabel has established a successful freelance career which has taken her across the UK\, Europe\, America and the Middle East. As well as working with Passacaglia\, she is a member of the recorder quintet Fontanella\, which specialises in Renaissance and contemporary consort repertoire.  She is the founder and director of the popular Woodhouse Recorder Courses and runs the recorder department at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Annabel can also be heard playing on film soundtracks including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1\, Fantastic Mr Fox and Philomena. \nRobin won the Broadwood Harpsichord Competition in 1995 and nowadays enjoys a career combining solo recitals\, chamber music and orchestral continuo. He is a member of La Serenissima and the Feinstein Ensemble\, and is a visiting teacher of harpsichord at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Also active in the field of recording and music technology\, he works regularly as a producer\, writes for Sound on Sound magazine\, and founded the recording label Barn Cottage Records. \nThe programme of music the duo will perform is entitled ‘Made in Italy’.  Sensational and dramatic\, melodic and emotional\, Italian music took London by storm in 1711 with Handel’s wildly successful opera\, Rinaldo. He is currently working on a reintroduction project for the wildcat and increasing the numbers of harvest mice and glow worms. He is also rewilding his 300 acre farm near Lifton\, Devon. \nDerek is a leading force behind “Keep it Wild” a charity set up to fight against the biodiversity crisis and his talk will outline what the charity is doing and how you can help. \nAuthor of a number of acclaimed books\, Derek’s latest “Hunt for the Shadow Wolf” attempts to uncover the true nature of this animal and what role it could play in Britain`s landscape.

From Balkan and Russian traditional music to their artful distillations of Romantic masterworks to soaring Gaelic folk anthems\, BCO is an infectious musical experience like none other. \nFifteen albums to their name\, Budapest Café Orchestra was established by British composer and violinist Christian Garrick in 2009. A diminutive ensemble of just four players\, the BCO creates an astonishing soundscape and aural alchemy characteristic of larger ensembles\, combining violin\, guitar\, accordion\, double bass\, saz\, balalaika\, domra and percussion to dazzling effect. \nEvoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros\, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires –  plus a few surprises along the way –  hugely entertaining\, immense skill\, profound musicianship. Clark Gregg\, Parker Posey\, and Malcolm McDowell also star. \n93-year-old Thelma Post lives alone in Los Angeles. Her aimless but loving grandson Daniel “Danny” Markowitz often visits and looks after her needs despite not taking responsibility for his own life. Although Thelma is close with Danny\, she finds his constant assistance patronizing. \nA phone scammer calls Thelma posing as Danny\, claiming he has been arrested. Thelma sends $10\,000 to a local address as instructed. After a panic involving her daughter Gail and son-in-law Alan\, Thelma finds out Danny is safe and she was scammed. Unable to get help from the police and unwilling to let the scammer get away with her money\, Thelma evades her family and sets out to the address to retrieve it. \nCert 12

So I am going with the flow and enjoying every minute……….. \nThere are so many wonderful songs in the jazz genre and I am looking forward to sharing some of these with you in an evening of jazz standards. I have the wonderful Mojito Jazz Trio to accompany me and I am also joined by the lovely Helen White who will sing and play violin and sax. They are all great musicians who appear regularly in venues around Devon and Cornwall and I am thrilled to be sharing a stage with them. \nWe are looking forward to the gig and it will be an evening of fun and joy. DESCRIPTION:After a highly successful solo concert in January 2024\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the virtuosa violinist\, Philippa Mo. \nBetween January and November 2025\, Philippa will be playing a series of concerts ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be highlighted\, tracing his progression as a composer from his earliest compositions written for solo violin to his later works. \nWe are very fortunate that Philippa will be playing the first and final concerts of the series at Calstock Arts. \nFurther information about the other concerts\, all of which will be performed at other venues in the south-west\, will be publicised at a later date. \nTickets can be purchased for either CA concert individually or for both concerts at a reduced price (see below for details). \nPhilippa studied at the royal Academy of Music\, London and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, recitals at the Henry Moore Institute\, Leeds\, the Centre for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, the Deutsches Museum\, Munich\, and further afield at the Ankara International Music Festival\, the Lincoln Center\, New York and Ulaan Bataar\, Mongolia. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokoviev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. \nPhilippa was appointed Senior Lecture in Violin at Leeds Conservatoire and was awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015. In 2020\, she won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nIn the January concert\, Philippa will present some of the most expressive and colourful music written for single violin. To counter the dark and cold of January we will hear Bach’s Partita in E major shot through with sunlight\, balanced by his most famous and joyous first cello suite. There are elements of folk music in works by two British women composers Sally Beamish and Wendy Hiscocks and an exotic glimpse into the Brazilian rainforest in the piece ‘Pernambuco’ by Nigel Clarke. DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to introduce a double bill of folk; Goblin Band and Craven. \nGoblin Band formed from sessions of the same name run out of the HobGoblin Music shop in central London\, organised by a collection of young queer folk obsessive friends and shop employees looking to forge their own way into folk music. \nThis gave rise to a band of multi-instrumentalists firmly rooted in the folk music of Britain\, interpreted via the socialist tradition concerned with folk’s relationship to the history of the working classes\, capitalism\, and colonialism. \nThrough a fusion of harmony singing\, fiddle\, squeezebox\, hurdy gurdy\, recorders and more\, Goblin Band deliver a charismatic alternative expression of English traditional culture in a way which is at once riotously joyful and deeply sincere. \n“They can play and they can sing and they’re fearless…When I saw Goblin Band singing recently\, I just thought\, “Why didn’t I think of that?” \n– MARTIN CARTHY \nBristol/Stroud based Folk band Craven perform traditional ballads with crafted arrangements. Driven to extinction seven hundred years ago\, a combination of the species’ own tenacity and illegal releases from the 1980s has seen several populations of this beast of myth begin to roam English and Scottish woods once more. \nTheir habitat-regenerating actions may benefit a host of other wildlife; but unlike beavers\, these ecosystem engineers remain unloved by many. Why is there no clamour to reintroduce them across the land? And\, with the few boar in England threatened by poaching and culling\, why are we not doing more to prevent their re-extinction? \nChantal Lyons moved to the boar’s stronghold of the Forest of Dean to get up close and personal with this complex\, intelligent and quirky species. And she met with people across Britain and beyond who welcome them – or want them gone. Suitable for children ages 4-12 and their parents\, carers and families. \nAfter last year’s successful show\, The Snow Queen\, we have invited Theatrix Arts back again for two performances of the Dragon’s Tail\, over the half term holiday. \nTwo performances at 1130 & 1500 \nA Dragon’s Tale \nFoolishly John Lambton throws the strange googly eyed fish back into the river. What has he done! The Fish grew and grew and grew until…  Well why not find out by coming to watch Paul Batten of Theatrix Arts perform this magical story based on the legend of the Lambton Worm through puppets\, changing scenery\, music and sound effects. \nWatch Paul Batten of Theatrix Arts perform this magical story through puppets\, changing scenery\, music and sound effects. Then meet the puppets and create your very own  Dragon Puppet from the show! \nTrained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School\, Artistic Director of Theatrix Arts\, Paul Batten has worked for many years in the theatre and entertainment industry. working as a Puppeteer and Maker Production Manager\, Designer for many events large-scale outdoor site-specific events. In his career\, Paul has also had the opportunity of touring with several different Theatre companies and music groups\, both nationally and internationally\, He also finds time to teach in theatre production. \nAudience feedback from other shows \nPaul is an absolutely wonderful performer! DESCRIPTION:As part of a series of environmental presentations at Calstock Arts\, the Calstock Parish Council environment committee invite you to meet the leaders of organisations who are locally active in nature restoration. \nThere is a climate and ecological emergency. The evidence is clear that we must increase the speed with which we are helping nature to recover if we are to prevent ecological breakdown. \nWildlife Groundswell is bringing together highly committed organisations and enthusiastic parishioners with the purpose of bridging the gap between policy and nature recovery action. \nThe theme of the Wildlife Groundswell gathering is community involvement and volunteering opportunities. \nThe participants of the gathering have been asked for their vision\, actions and engagements. \n\nHow does their role relate to Calstock Parish or its parishioners?\nCall to action. What can we and our network of friends\, and family do?\nEngagement opportunities. How do we participate not just observe? Actions\, opportunities\, dates\, memberships.\n\nThe target audience are key members of the community and members of organisations who can network and leverage nature recovery activity. \nObjectives \n\nBy the end of the day\, participants will feel more empowered to engage and become more active.\nThe Parish Council will collect organisations’ details\, points of contact and volunteering opportunities to publicise on our website.\nAttendees will know where to go to become more involved.\n\nThe aims of the day are to give participants an overview of environmental issues\, an overview of the actors in the field of nature recovery and a vision for how they and the whole community might become more active and do something to contribute. \nInvolved are – \nAnna Gelderd\, MP South East Cornwall \nStuart Oates\, Presenter\, organic farmer\, environmental journalist. \nCllr. DESCRIPTION:JIM CAUSLEY AND MIRANDA SYKES PRESENT GHOSTS\, WEREWOLVES AND COUNTRYFOLK – THE SONGS AND STORIES OF SABINE BARING-GOULD \nSix-time BBC Folk Awards nominee Jim Causley and Miranda Sykes of Award-Winning Show of Hands and Daphne’s Flight come together for the first time to celebrate the centenary of a Victorian superstar through his music and stories. \nSabine Baring-Gould inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, Sherlock Holme’s Hound and Bernard Shaw’s Doolittle. He brought Ghostly Aunt Eliza\, wretched heroine Mehalah and Norse hero Grettir to life. He mentored folk song collector Cecil Sharp – and wrote Onward Christian Soldiers \nHe was a giant of his time. He was a top ten best-selling novelist; the writer of what is still the go-to book on werewolves; author of a nerve-tingling book of ghost stories; storyteller of the Norse Myths of Iceland; compiler of a classic Dartmoor history book and composer of numerous popular hymns. \nBut he says the most important thing he did in his life was to collect songs from the countryfolk of Devon and Cornwall. A pioneer collector\, starting a decade before Sharp and Vaughan Williams\, he amassed more than 2000 songs. \nMiranda\, Jim and narrator John Palmer\, director of the critically-acclaimed Vaughan Williams anniversary “From Pub to Pulpit” Cathedral tour\, interweave some of those songs with anecdotes from his own astonishing life and stories from his impressive array of books. \nThis tribute aims to make audiences smile\, gasp and sing along as they hear how:\n\nA ragamuffin fiddler’s favourite tune lived on in his instrument after he died (Bold General Wolfe) \nA cottage was built in a day on the moor for a penniless newly married couple (Cottage Well Thatched With Straw) \nThe eerie mysteries of Wil O’ The Wisp and his graveyard trips (The Blue Flame) \nBram Stoker took ideas from Sabine for Dracula  \nAnd ….. How Sabine became Sherlock Holmes’s God Father.\n\nBaring Gould was born in Exeter on 28 January 1834 and died in January 1924\, the son of the Lord of the Manor of Lew Trenchard near Okehampton. He was at school in Warwick and a schoolteacher in Sussex. He then became a vicar in Yorkshire\, Essex and Devon and devoted his time to his love of folk music\, country traditions and the macabre… \nJim has been a long-term admirer of Baring-Gould and includes many of his songs in his popular shows based on songs of Dartmoor.  \n“It’s fascinating to see how many songs he collected found their way into his Dartmoor books.  It’s also quite eerie to see how many other songs fit the mood of his books on ghosts\, werewolves\, myths and his classic Gothic novels”\, he said. \nMiranda added: “We’re really excited about having found a unique and enjoyable way of bringing all of his work together in a show which we think will engage audiences and leave them fascinated and entertained.” \nJohn Palmer said: “It’s surprising that someone who was such a prominent public figure in his day has almost disappeared today. We hope that this show will introduce many more people to Sabine and restore some of the credit he deserves”.
