SUMMARY:17 April: The Banjo Boys - Part of the Film Expo South Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Banjo Boys follows the rise of Madalitso Band\, Malawian musicians Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni\, who craft a banjo\, a one-stringed babatone\, and foot drum\, creating a sound that moves audiences. Once mocked as madmen in Lilongwe’s streets\, they meet Neil Nayar\, a British musician drawn to Malawi’s spirit. \nTheir chance encounter sparks a trio\, propelling them from local busking to global stages like Sauti za Busara\, WOMAD\, and Joshua Tree. Facing visa struggles\, personal tragedies—including original member Rice’s imprisonment for murder—and cultural tensions\, their grit fuels joyous performances. \nYobu’s pastoral visions\, Yosefe’s resilience\, and Neil’s purpose drive their bond.\nTheir minimalist sound bridges continents\, culminating in a 2023 world tour and a legendary Malawi homecoming. Intimate interviews and vibrant performances reveal music’s power to unite and transform.

The symposium bridges the gap between academic research and public action. You will hear from leading experts like Norman Carreck and Dr Ollie Visick on the latest global threats to bees\, the unique genetic importance of wild colonies\, and the practical limitations they face in finding nest sites. The session will then shift from theory to practice\, showcasing the groundbreaking citizen science project from the University of Plymouth\, which invites the public to actively participate in locating and monitoring these free-living populations. The afternoon will feature real-world case studies in conservation and biosecurity from the Isles of Scilly and Blenheim Palace\, culminating in an open roundtable discussion to brainstorm how the community can directly support ongoing research. \nKey Takeaway  \nThe major takeaway is to send everyone away with a clear idea of how they are going to spread the word about the University of Plymouth’s free-living honey bee research within their own communities and networks. Wild honey bee colonies still occur across South West England! \nUniversity of Plymouth are mapping these colonies and collecting samples to reveal their genetic origin. \n  \nDr Ollie Visick is encouraging people to report free-living colonies on the Honey Bee Watch mapping platform.  \nhttps://app.honeybeewatch.com/   \n  \nDelegates can also report nest locations directly to Dr Ollie Visick via oliver.visick@plymouth.ac.uk or the Facebook page  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582743947629 \nThe Symposium on Saturday 11th April is preceded by half a day outdoors at Newton Farm\, Metherell as follows:- \n  \nFriday 10th April – Newton Farm – Farm tour. \ncontact Andrew Brown andrew@aglbrown.co.uk for further details and an invitation. \n  \n14:00 – 16:00 \nThe farm tour will cover wildflower meadow creation\, a hedge laying demonstration\, wetland creation\, orchard creation and conservation grazing.  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Dv9i4wNAq/  \n  \n16:00 -18:00 \nFilipe Salbany (Blenheim Palace) and Matthew Somerville (Bee Kind Hives) will demonstrate the installation of a log hive and a rocket hive. \nThis demonstration might help with the question: “are free-living honey bees limited by nest sites and what can we do to mimic ancient woodlands and their veteran trees?” \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h6K_cS0m_w  \n  \n  \nKey Takeaways  \n  \nGuests should expect to observe a multitude of actions designed to increase biodiversity and contribute to nature recovery. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:26 March: Cornwall Climate Care - Beyond Bricks @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Bricks is the latest documentary by award-winning charity Cornwall Climate Care \nHousing is a basic human requirement – but the construction industry is one of the world’s biggest sources of climate emissions and landfill waste. \nBeyond Bricks investigates the balancing act needed to create hundreds of thousands of new homes in the UK without worsening the climate and ecological crises. \nThis is a particularly sensitive issue in Cornwall\, the UK’s ‘capital of second homes’\, where many thousands of people are on the housing register while huge numbers of houses lie empty. \nPresented by Cornish builder Andy Carr\, Beyond Bricks looks at everything from high tech housing solutions to people building with novel\, climate-friendly materials\, rethinking ‘waste’ and ensuring that our future homes also leave space for nature. \nWhether we own or rent our homes\, we all need a roof over our heads\, and Beyond Bricks is a solutions-focused film to inspire us all. \nAfter the film\, take part in a live Q&A hosted by director Bryony Stokes\, featuring leading experts \nWatch the trailer here: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwnbKqrtMqs&t=21s

SUMMARY:21 March: SINGH Strings - The first of our festival of Four World Music Concerts
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Our Music Planet’ Festival of world music kicks-off with a celebration of the music from the Indian sub-continent. We welcome the Singh Strings to Calstock Arts for their first performance at the Old Chapel. The trio is a truly family affair. Led by Sitar maestro\, Dharambir Singh\, he is accompanied by his two talented sons Kaviraj Singh (Santoor/Voice) and Upneet Singh (Tabla). Weaving together melodic improvisations\, rhythmic cycles\, and soulful compositions\, the ensemble creates an immersive listening experience that transcends cultural boundaries. \nThe performance will take us on a journey through the intricate world of ‘classical’ Raagdhari music that originated in Northern India and dates back many centuries. Raagdhari music is mainly melodic rather than harmonic\, and consists of a basic melodic line played or sung against complex patterns of rhythm. The melody is founded on a raga (Sanskrit for colour or passion)\, comprising a series of five or more musical notes\, and evoking various moods in the listener and performers\, while the rhythm is called tala (clap or beat). The concert will transport you on a soulful journey through a selection of beautiful ragas. Here is a taster of what to expect: \nhttps://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx4pWdrw5xencrZEQyW0bMxhWqxESo7rOG?si=t9Ql_GXgAi6eHBXx \nUstad Dharambir Singh MBE is one of the most prominent and revered figures of Indian classical music in the UK. His soulful Sitar renditions carry the legacy of Raagdhari music\, playing intricate ragas with depth and devotion. He is a pioneer in the nurturing of South Asian arts in the UK\, and was founder and artistic director of South Asian Arts UK (https://www.saa-uk.org/) that has been at the forefront of promoting\, preserving and facilitating South Asian music and dance across the UK for more than 25 years. Dharambir was awarded an MBE for services to music in 2011. \nKaviraj Singh is well known for his mastery of the Santoor and for his mellifluous vocals. Over the years\, he has garnered immense acclaim for his performances\, demonstrating a rare blend of technical brilliance\, emotional depth\, and artistic finesse\, making him a highly sought-after artist in the realm of Indian classical music. \nUpneet Singh has an innate musicality as a Tabla player. He has developed a fine balance between the art of accompaniment and technical skill. His dynamic Tabla rhythms provide the heartbeat to the ensemble\, showcasing dexterity\, grace\, and rhythmic storytelling that are deeply routed in the traditions of Indian classical percussion. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:20 March: Rob Barratt - Poet\, Comic\, Humourist and Singer
DESCRIPTION:Brain tickling\, word mangling performances combine clever word play\, verse and song with satire\, parody and audience participation. Rob deals with the important issues of the day with topics such as squid\, data driven education\, Neanderthal politics\, the weather in relationship with potatoes\, but beneath the humour serious issues lurk. \nThis not only clever but I think it is very funny (Mike Harding) \nWhat a night we had on Friday with the amazing wordsmith Rob Barratt. Funny\, witty\, poignant\, thought-provoking poems and songs\, we were laughing until our ribs hurt one moment and then thinking about the curved balls that life often throws at us the next. A great performer\, Rob immediately engages with his audience and takes them on the journey into his world and it is a wonderful experience” (Watford Folk Club\, June 2024) \nA cracking evening with a talented wordsmith who made audience participation voluntarily enjoyable.” (Liz Williams\, Butterleigh Village Hall\, Devon\, 2024) \nComic Poet’ it says on the card. That’s not the half of it. The man is a velvet tongued assassin\, using charm and humour as a subtle lever to highlight life’s absurdities. SUMMARY:6 March : The Countrymen @1930 SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Our annual event to celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. The Countrymen return to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’. \nIt’s difficult to find a musical genre that would fully describe The Countrymen\, but Folk Rock Harmony comes close. A five-piece band featuring tight four-part vocal harmony and strong instrumentation\, their style has been likened to Crosby\, Stills & Nash and The Eagles. \nFor this concert tour\, they are joined by keyboard player and accordionist\, Rob Strike making this a rare opportunity to see The Countrymen as a six-piece. \nPrimarily performing original songs and their own arrangements of lesser-known contemporary folk\, the band’s lyrical inspiration is drawn from life in Cornwall\, the demise of local industries and other rural issues that resonate throughout the country. The Countrymen are accomplished performers\, engaging the audience with light-hearted banter and back-stories to their songs. \nThe Countrymen perform up to 50 live gigs per year including spring and autumn concert tours\, festivals and other folk events.  These have previously included Little Orchard Festival\, Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival and Bridport Folk Festival which they headlined last year for the second time. \n“These guys are really entertaining. The musicianship\, vocal harmonies and the humour all come together to provide a great evenings entertainment”.                                        Graham Bunney \nIn 2026\, they will be returning to Bie Diap in The Netherlands\, one of Europe’s largest folk and sea-song festivals and in September\, they will be touring in the U.S.A. with several dates around the Mid-West. \n“If you get the chance to see these guys (The Countrymen) in concert then take it\, you will not be disappointed”                                                                                                                           Harry Glasson \nTo date\, the band have released two albums\, Trees on the Hill and The River Rolls On\, both available on CD and all major streaming/download sites.  They are currently working on a third album to be released in the first half of 2026. \nWebsite:              thecountrymen.co.uk \nFacebook:           www.facebook.com/countrymenband \nInstagram:          @thecountrymenbandcornwall \n  \n

SUMMARY:28 February: The Songs of Nick Drake - Keith James with Ritchie Cotterill @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Keith James returns to the Old Chapel with THE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE. Voice and unusually tuned acoustic guitars\, together with flutes played by Richie Cotterill. \nNick Drake is one of the most revered and loved of all this country’s acoustic Singer-Songwriters. He has given us timeless songs that shed all the tears of life within their fragile yet perfect lines. \nHe recorded three cherished albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974 aged only 26 his music almost disappeared into obscurity. Now\, thanks to a massive resurgence of interest and a worldwide re-evaluation of his unique music\, Nick Drake has become a national treasure. Several meticulously compiled biographies look at every aspect of Nick’s life and music\, throwing light on many shadowy corners of mystery and supposition. \nTwo decades have now passed since Singer/Guitarist Keith James first astonished the whole country with his stunningly beautiful series of concerts. He was the first artist ever to bring these intriguing songs to theatres and arts venues across the UK\, and remains to this day\, the foremost artist devoted to performing Nick’s music in its pure live acoustic form. Over the past 20 years\, Keith has performed over 1000 highly acclaimed concerts in venues across the UK\, Ireland\, Holland\, France\, Italy and Spain including all of Nick’s schools and colleges – even Glastonbury Festival. Keith will be joined by flautist Richie Cotterill. \n‘Musicians brave enough to play the music they really believe in. Keith James is one of these’ Bob Harris OBE \n‘A fresh and powerful approach to these wonderful songs’  Patrick Humphries – Nick Drake biographer \n‘devotion\, integrity\, experience. All spinning as one’ Guardian \n“An absolute must” Mark Radcliffe \n‘A creative and imaginative artist at the peak of his powers’ Trevor Dann – Nick Drake Biographer \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NaarF1wSOA \nwww.keith-james.com

SUMMARY:27 February : Gallery Bar Special with The Blues Dukes
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome back the Blue Dukes. The four veterans of the SW Music scene are back in their 4-piece band playing Blues and Roots music. \nThe band consists of – \nJeff “the Horse” Horsey      Harmonica\, Guitar and Vocals \nGareth Hedges                     Guitar and Vocals \nGeorge Nixs                          Lead Guitar and Vocals \nColin Boyd                            Bass Guitar and Vocals. \nGareth Hedges has played and recorded in the UK\, America\, Europe and even Australia. He is a wonderful guitar picker and has a lived in\, authentic vocal style\, having learnt first-hand from artists like Bill Munroe\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan\, all of whom he has spent time with. \nGeorge Nixs is a flamboyant\, virtuoso lead guitar player and his playing lights up a lot of the material the band do. He used to do session work at Abbey Road Studios and counted Peter Green\, Eric Clapton and the Hollies among his musical friends. He played with future AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson\, in a band called Geordie in the 1970s. \nColin Boyd is well known locally as one of the best Bass players around and has a distinctive style all his own. In the past he has famously worked with the Kinks and Lou Reed! \nJeff Horsey played in Exeter based band Junkyard Angels and toured widely\, backing Louisiana Legend Tabby Thomas and playing alongside artists as diverse as Geno Washington\, Peter Green and even Screaming Lord Sutch. He gets to concentrate on his singing and Harmonica playing but also plays some Slide Guitar. \nTogether they perform funky versions of well-known blues covers\, lesser known songs you wished you had heard before and a few original numbers\, all blending into an exciting\, highly listenable gumbo with lots of harmony singing giving them a special edge. The music sweeps from almost Bluegrass acoustic numbers to full on Chicago style Blues\, touching base with Rock n’ Roll and even Skiffle on the way! \nLoud enough to dance to and quiet enough to listen! \n  \nListen to them here:https://youtu.be/W0Hayf5CZXc

SUMMARY:22 February: Divertimento String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back the Divertimento String Quartet who last performed at Calstock Arts in 2023. Based in Devon\, the quartet is one of South West England’s foremost string quartets\, with a large following for their regular concert series. The afternoon concert will include: Fritz Kreisler’s String Quartet in A minor and Schumann’s String Quartet in A.   \nAcclaimed for giving performances of such polished professionalism combined with a real sense of intimacy and pleasure\, one of the many good reasons for attending their concerts is the careful and interesting choice of programming. Their pleasure and enjoyment in playing communicates immediately with their audience –  the attentive listening to each other\, the way individual instruments shine out where necessary and blend\, support and work together throughout all add to the richness of the music. For pieces both familiar and unfamiliar the players introduce the music so that the listening is enhanced by entertaining explanations and/or short extracts. \n ‘If anyone has a friend who might be interested in chamber music but feels a bit intimidated by it\, Divertimento is the ideal group to take them to; they’ll hook them in gently and with the utmost charm\, and open up a whole new world of delight!’  Come along and bring a friend! \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/Sx9697Jph1o?si=DfkvS0onKst9nNSt \nMary Eade (violin) studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School before student life took her to Freiburg\, Germany\, later returning to the Royal College of Music\, London. She gave her Wigmore Hall debut in 1975 and has played many concertos most notably with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, the English Chamber Orchestra\, London Festival Orchestra\, Tallis Chamber Orchestra. \nLindsay Braga (violin) studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Richard Deakin and Wen Zu Li. Since then she has worked with many orchestras including: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra\, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra\, Welsh National Opera\, English National Ballet\, Goldberg Ensemble\, Manchester Camerata. \nAndrew Gillett (viola) studied at the Royal College of Music and the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt\, Germany. In demand as a freelance chamber and orchestral musician\, his musical interests are diverse – baroque\, contemporary and all things in between\, – sometimes he’s found at ceilidhs\, playing fiddle long into the night. \nVicky Evans (cello) early studies were at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and then at the Purcell School before continuing her training at Dartington College of Arts. She has a busy career as a freelance musician – as a cello continuo player and chamber musician\, and as manager of several chamber ensembles and orchestras\, and Director of Divertimento Entertainments. \nPROGRAMME: \nJ.P Rameau – Chaconne from Castor and Pollux Suite\nFritz Kreisler String Quartet in A minor\nRobert Schumann String Quartet in A\, Op 41 no 3 \nRameau’s Chaconne from Castor et Pollux is from his opera where\ncharacters wrestle with fate\, love\, and moral dilemmas. Rameau’s music\nelevates these conflicts into a realm of expressive sophistication\,\nmaking this opera a cornerstone of 18th-century French music. \nAlthough overshadowed by Kreisler’s fame as a virtuoso and his\npopular salon pieces\, his string quartet is a substantial and rewarding\nwork. It combines melodic charm with structural sophistication\, offering\nperformers and listeners a glimpse of Kreisler’s depth as a composer\nbeyond the encore repertoire. \nSchumann’s String Quartet in A was composed in 1842\, which was known as\nSchumann’s “chamber music year\,” during which he composed three\nstring quartets\, a piano quartet\, and the celebrated piano quintet.\nAfter years devoted to piano works and songs\, Schumann immersed himself\nin the quartets of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven\, determined to master\nthe genre. The Op. 41 quartets were written in just five weeks and\ndedicated to Felix Mendelssohn. \n  \n

SUMMARY:20 February: SykesMartin
DESCRIPTION:SykesMartin \nSykesMartin is the exciting collaboration from two of British folk’s finest voices. Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) and Hannah Martin (Edgelarks\, Gigspanner Big Band) join forces to present a set of songs that take them back to their shared roots.  \nHaving played together on numerous occasions\, including in Steve Knightley’s Wake the Union band\, and at the Royal Albert Hall\, they knew that they shared an instinctive ear for harmony and skilled instrumental improvisation. A sociable Devon winter evening led to an exchange of songs; which proved to be so much fun that they soon arranged another musical get together. Swiftly these became rehearsal sessions\, as a strong new sound emerged.  \nCentred around their deep knowledge of roots music\, and a love of harmony singing\, SykesMartin brings together old songs with new ideas; ancient tales with double bass\, fiddle\, and banjo; and two mesmerising storytellers joining voices to create a spine-tingling testimonial to our shared musical heritage. \n

Stan Sulzmann\, Laura Jurd). \nThis quartet builds on the success of Alex’s former quartet release ‘Anatta’ (2016) a record that featured legendary American drummer Jeff Williams\, received critical acclaim as a “promising debut\, of striking quality” from the Guardian’s John Fordham and was praised as “one of the best UK jazz recordings I’ve heard this year” by Marlbank’s Stephen Graham on its release. Since this time Alex has also released two albums for the prestigious Barcelona-based label Fresh Sound New Talent; ‘Mind-Ear-Ladder’ in a co-led quintet with trumpeter Steve Fishwick (2022) and ‘Common Threads’ with the Fresh Sound Ensemble (2023). Alex is now relishing the opportunity to get back to the classic quartet format with this brilliant line-up and is excited to bring some new quartet material to Calstock Arts as part of a larger nationwide tour in January- February 2026.” \nListen Here

SUMMARY:23 January: Gallery Bar Special - Tavy Tars
DESCRIPTION:Experience a great night of ‘songs from the sea’ and a few from the land. \nBased within sight of Calstock\, but on the other side of the Tamar\, the Tavy Tars come from Bere Ferrers and Tavistock and named after the river that links them. They have been a ‘crew’ for around 23 years\, and venues and audiences have ranged from shoppers Selfridges in London to a man and his dog on a rainswept night on Cotehele Quay – as well as shanty festivals at Falmouth\, Mevagissey and Teignmouth. Although they sing the odd well-known shanty\, they perform many other ‘songs of the sea’\, old and new\, plus some that are firmly on or under the land. They love to tell tales about the intriguing ‘back stories’ in the lyrics of many of their songs\, whether in Australia\, Canada or just up the Tamar. So their session features words as well as music.

SUMMARY:16 January Hedera
DESCRIPTION:Hedera \nHedera is a chamber folk project from Bristol featuring Lulu Austin (violin)\, Maisie Brett (Hardanger)\, Tamsin Elliott (accordion\, harp)\, Beth Roberts (double bass\, violin) and Isis Wolf-Light (clarinets). They perform original and traditional pieces inspired by music from England\, Scotland\, France\, Bali\, Georgia\, Bulgaria\, Ethiopia and beyond\, translated through a prism of experimental minimalism and contemporary classical influences. Their eponymous debut album is a collection of twelve original & traditional tunes that reflect their craft as composers\, tune-interpreters and collaborative arrangers (due for release in February 2026). \nIn 2020\, the five musicians began meeting informally to play tunes around winter bonfires\, limited to a small gathering due to the ‘Rule of Six’ pandemic measures. They discovered a shared love of deep listening\, slow playing and improvisation as they taught each other tunes from different traditions. Over time\, the ensemble has evolved into something more structured\, but still retains the intimacy and conviviality of its beginnings. \nIn 2022\, their debut track ‘Waterwheel’ premiered on KLOF Magazine and they performed their first highly acclaimed gigs at Fire in the Mountain festival and The Greenbank\, Bristol. In January 2024 they sold out most gigs on their debut UK tour\, performing in prestigious arts centres including King’s Place (London) and Upfront Arts (Penrith)\, as well as prominent community venues such as Black Fen Folk Club (Cambridge)\, Ashburton Arts Centre and Cornish Bank. Recent gigs include significant slots at Bristol Folk Festival\, Folk East Festival and Allen Valleys Folk Festival\, with many attendees expressing that Hedera was a highlight. \n  \n“Dramatic & deftly played…” – FATEA \n  \n“If I was still booking gigs and festivals… I just saw a band who would be high on my A-list” – Ian Anderson \n
