SUMMARY:9 November: Martin Rowson - Giving the Gift of Offence
DESCRIPTION:Martin Rowson is a multi-award-winning political cartoonist\, author\, ranter\, illustrator\, broadcaster and poet who’s been assailing the world of politics and the news with his thought-provoking images for 40 years. \nMartin was last at Calstock Arts with his Cartoon History of Brexit in October 2019. He returns to the Old Chapel with his new show “Giving the Gift of Offence“\, where Martin takes us through 40 years of British Politics\, with both his personal and his cartoon responses to the individuals he has met: including the perennial challenges of having to work out how to draw the “fresh meat” of each new Prime Minister\, alongside the cavalcade of events we’ve all witnessed and he’s depicted. \nRefreshingly indiscreet in revealing the people beneath the pomp and spin (as well as spilling the beans on the true nature of journalism)\, this new show will be fully illustrated.

SUMMARY:20 July: Cornwall's Climate Stories - Hungry for Change (preview showing) SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:We have sold out for this event but Bryony is happy to show the film again in September if there is enough interest. If you were unable to come to this showing & would like to see the repeat showing\, please email events@calstockarts.org \nHungry for Change\, the latest episode in the Cornwall’s Climate Stories series\, is presented by a forager who takes a fascinating and inspiring look at how we could ‘do food better’ – from the gleaners picking ‘waste’ crops in our fields to a microbiologist keen to get us all eating low-carbon insects and projects to grow food in unusual places. \nWhat we eat and the way we produce it is responsible for a huge part of our carbon emissions\, particularly since we import nearly 50% of all our food …. and waste one-third of it. \nLast summer’s heatwave\, which frazzled crops and left dairy cows suffering from heat stress\, showed just how vulnerable our intensive\, fossil fuel-driven food system is to climate shocks. \nDirected by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes. \nTasty tester food in the theme of the film by Katie and Crow from 7-7.45pm\, for a donation. No pre booking necessary but first come first served! \nThe film will be followed by a question and answer session.

SUMMARY:18 June: Taiko Drumming Workshop @ 1500 SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Taiko drums have been around for a couple of thousand years\, traditionally used in the background to keep the beat for dancers and singers during festivals or to create the sound effects offstage in Noh and Kabuki theatre.  As a performance art in its own right\, it is actually quite new\, having been developed in the 1950s by a Japanese jazz drummer\, Daihachi Oguchi.  Since then\, the art of taiko drumming has spread across the globe\, including the South West of England! \nTaiko South West comes under the umbrella of Kagemusha Taiko\, founded in 1998 by Artistic Director\, Jonathan Kirby.  Our Taiko Centre is near Newton Abbot in Devon\,  where we offer the company’s adult performing group\, Tano Taiko\, as well as taiko experiences for schools and other organisations throughout the South West. \nIn our workshops\, participants get to grips with the basics of taiko drumming\, try out some simple drills and learn a fun choreographed piece.  Whilst not marketed as therapeutic\, there are many benefits to taiko drumming:  it’s great physical exercise and good “brain gym”.  It’s also a lot of fun and can lead to a real sense of achievement. \nSuitable for all ages over 12. \nPrevious workshop participants have said: \n“A fantastic day.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to come again.  It’s definitely something I could get into.” \n“We had a great time. Thank you for the warm welcome.  If we weren’t so far away\, we’d definitely join you more regularly.” \nFor further information please see: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/TaikoSouthWest \nhttps://www.instagram.com/taikosouthwestuk/

A range of delicious freshly baked cakes and scones will be available. \nEvent Capacity: 15 \n\n\n\n\nSamuel Bestwick is an artist and filmmaker currently based in Cornwall. Primarily employing the use of moving image\, his practice explores narrative in conjunction with place and social history\, often recontextualising these ideas within a modern context. Created for Bridge the Tamar\, a group exhibition hosted by MIRROR at Arts University Plymouth and curated by Hannah Rose and Elaine Sinclair\, Dowr Tamar / Great Water’ explores the evolution of the Tamar river’s landscape through time. With a musical score composed by The Worm\, the film catalogues humanity’s technological progression\, commercial expansion and environmental exploitation through the 22 bridges that cross the river. Starting as humble footbridges hidden amongst greenery\, the widening river soon features concrete constructions capable of carrying vehicles. From here the bridges become metal. Humanity’s influence continues to become more apparent\, small settlements make way for hamlets\, hamlets become villages\, villages become towns. Eventually\, the river reaches the industrial revolution’s Royal Albert bridge and 20th century’s subsequent Tamar bridge\, before finally opening up to the mass of water beyond. We are waiting to confirm\, but it is likely that Sam will be available to answer questions about his film after the screening. \nLey Roberts is a member of Drawn to the Valley and also runs the Limekiln Gallery in Calstock. Her figurative pen and ink drawings\, prints and etchings are inspired by the beautiful Tamar valley. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:30 March - Turning My Farm into an Ark for Lost Species with Derek Gow @ 1930 SOLD OUT!
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to welcome local farmer-turned-ecologist Derek Gow to speak about his new book and his experience of rewilding. \nTearing down fences literally and metaphorically\, Birds\, Beasts and Bedlam recounts the adventures of Britain’s most colourful rewilder\, Derek Gow. How he raised a sofa-loving wild boar piglet\, transported a raging bison bull across the UK\, got bitten by a Scottish wildcat and restored the ancient white stork to the Knepp Estate with Charlie Burrell and Isabella Tree. \nAfter a Shetland ewe captured a young Derek’s heart\, he grew up to become a farmer with a passion for ancient breeds. But when he realised how many of our species were close to extinction\, even on his own land\, he tore up his traditional Devon farm and transformed it into a rewilding haven for beavers\, water voles\, lynx\, wildcats\, harvest mice and more. \nBirds\, Beasts and Bedlam is the story of a rewilding maverick and his single-minded mission to save our wildlife. \n‘Derek’s passion for our native wildlife is matched by his highly pragmatic approach to helping it thrive. He gets stuff done. The story of his amazing work at Broadwoodwidger is highly entertaining but also a heartfelt plea for a wilder\, more inspiring Britain.’—Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall \n‘Derek Gow’s riotous adventures rescuing threatened species and releasing them for rewilding read like Gerald Durrell on steroids. Courageous\, visionary\, funny and always up for a scrap with bureaucracy and complacency\, the world needs many more Derek Gows.’—Isabella Tree\, author of Wilding \n‘A brilliant read – and the entertaining backstory of a species of human megafauna who has transformed the British conservation scene.’—Benedict Macdonald\, author of Rebirding (winner\, 2020 Wainwright Conservation Prize) \n‘A do-er\, not a dreamer\, Gow has become one of our most outspoken rewilders.’ Countryfile Magazine \n ‘In this warm and funny autobiography\, [Gow] writes with a whimsical fluency about the moments of humour and pathos in an unusual life.’ Country Life \nFurther information on Derek’s books below – \nhttps://chelseagreen.co.uk/book/birds-beasts-and-bedlam/ \nhttps://chelseagreen.co.uk/book/bringing-back-the-beaver-2/

SUMMARY:16 February 2023: Guy Shrubsole - Lost Rainforests of Britain @ 1930 (sold out but live stream available - see below)
DESCRIPTION:Guy Shrubsole is a writer and environmental campaigner. He has worked for Rewilding Britain\, Friends of the Earth\, the UK Government’s Department of Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture. \nHe has written widely for publications such as the Guardian and New Statesman. His first book Who Owns England? was an instant Sunday Times best seller. Calstock Arts are very pleased to welcome him to the Old Chapel to talk about his latest book\, Lost Rain Forests of Britain\, which Chris Packman describes as ‘A treasure full of woodland jewels\, rare\, precious and beautiful’ \nIn 2020\, Guy moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys\, rivers and tors of Dartmoor\, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced\, he spend the following months investigating the history\, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England\, Wales and Scotland. Britain\, Guy discovered\, was once a rainforest nation. \nHis book is the story of a unique habitat that has been so ravaged\, most people today don’t realise it exists. Temperate rainforest may once have covered up to one-fifth of Britain and played host to a dazzling variety of luminous life-forms\, inspiring Celtic druids\, Welsh wizards\, Romantic poets\, and Arthur Conan Doyle’s most loved creations. Though only fragments now remain\, they form a rare and internationally important habitat\, home to lush ferns and beardy lichens\, pine martens and pied flycatchers. But why are even environmentalists unaware of their existence? And how have we managed to so comprehensively excise them from our cultural memory? \nThere will be a question and answer session at the end of his talk. \nBook Stop\, an independent book shop in Tavistock\, will be at the event selling books – which Guy will be happy to sign at the end of the evening. \nFor more info on Lost Rain Forests of Britain click here \nRead Guy’s blog of Who Owns England?. or click here to read more of his work. \nUpdate – Livestream available \nAs tickets have sold out we are now planning to livestream as well.\nIf you would like to access the live stream please send an email to webmaster@calstockarts.org. SUMMARY:21 January: Wurlitza (SOLD OUT - check out ticket link for returns before 1800)
DESCRIPTION:Returning to The Old Chapel after two successful shows in the past\, Wurlitza deliver so much more than a soundtrack to silent films. Their choreography\, split second timing and hours of rehearsal combine to deliver a unique cinematic and musical experience. Blending old and new\, classical\, jazz\, pop and more\, Wurlitza cross genres and defy convention. \nTheir latest film is the The Kid: A life-affirming love story between a tramp (Charlie Chaplin) and his adopted son (Jackie Coogan). Originally advertised as “six reels of joy”\, The Kid broke all barriers of convention\, being the first film to combine dramatic action\, a strong storyline and slapstick comedy. It was Chaplin’s first feature length film as a director and became the second-highest grossing film of 1921. \nTheir soundtrack for the Kid includes music by David Bowie\, Sham 69\, The Beatles\, Nick Lowe\, Django Reinhardt\, Debussy and Chopin. \nIn a departure from Wurlitza’s usual hard hitting films\, The Kid is completely suitable for all ages. Wurlitza will be accompanying The Kid with another comic short film. \nChaplin’s story is one of rags to riches; as a child he spent time in London workhouses and lived for a while on the streets after his mother was admitted to an assylum. Chaplin’s difficult early start made him a man of enormous compassion. \nMuch of the magic of the film is the chemistry between Charlie Chaplin\, and the astonishingly precocious Jackie Coogan\, which is a delight to watch. \nJackie Coogan became the child star of his generation\, earning over three million dollars\, which would have been due to him on his 21st birthday. However\, five months before he came of age his father died in a car crash\, of which Jackie was the only survivor. His money was frittered away by his mother and step father\, leaving him nearly penniless. This led to a law suit that resulted in the passing of the Coogan Act\, that protects the earnings of child actors. \nJackie Coogan continued his successful acting career as an adult\, later being cast as Uncle Fester in the Adams Family. \n“Why does Wurlitza work? Because they bring magic. And that is never a bad thing.” \n“I would travel to another continent to see Wurlitza.”

SUMMARY:8 January: Cornwall's Climate Stories - Food for Thought
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes\, the next in Cornwall’s climate stories – Food for Thought looks at the undeniable impacts of modern animal agriculture as well as some of the incredible Cornish initiatives underway to mitigate them – and also the role that regenerative farming could play in actually combating climate change while producing nutritious food. \nPresented by organic beef farmer Lisa Guy\, this film aims to inspire much-needed conversation and action about a crucial subject that has become one of the most contentious within the climate debate. \nShould we all be giving up meat and dairy if we’re to have a hope of avoiding dangerous climate breakdown? \nThis is what the headlines seem to tell us. But is this too simplistic a picture – and what would this mean for Cornwall\, where the majority of our farmland is used to raise livestock or to grow crops for these animals to eat? \nThere will be a Q&A session after the film with Bryony\, the film team plus Kate Dibble & Tim Williams. \nKate Dibble is from Bennamann\, a Cornish company developing an innovative technology to turn the methane produced on dairy farms from an extremely damaging greenhouse gas into an environmentally-friendly fuel. \nTim Williams is from Erth Barton Farm\, near Saltash. The farm is one of Cornwall’s three net zero demonstration farms. Tim is restoring the farm’s heavily-depleted soils to health\, showing that they can draw down huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the fight against climate change. \nThe film trailer can be seen here: \nOr for more information on Cornwall climate films click here \n  \n  \n
