DESCRIPTION:WEST COUNTRY AUTHORS TO SHARE TRICKS OF THE TRADE \nThree Devon authors\, who are all members of the same writing group\, will be sharing their experience of the rocky road to publication\, in an attempt to help other writers get published. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled to welcome\, Yaara Lahav Gregory\, Anna Lunk\, and Sophie Pierce\, in conversation  at the Old Chapel  with their One Writers’ Group: Three Routes to Publication. \nAnna Lunk\, a one time resident of Calstock and member of Girl’s Own Theatre lives in Staverton\, while Sophie Pierce and Yaara Lahav Gregory live in Ashburton. They are all members of Ashburton Writers’ Group. \nAll three have had books published in the last year\, but know what a lonely business writing is\, and how difficult it is to get published. The trio will share their experiences\, reading extracts from their books\, talking about their journeys to publication and discussing the support and encouragement they received from their writing group. \nTheir books are very different: Yaara’s Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) is a novel set in 1970s Israel\, but which also incorporates life in Devon. Anna’s novel Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) is the story of a young girl navigating life on her own after being in care\, while Sophie’s memoir The Green Hill: Letters to a Son (Unbound)  is about the sudden death of her son Felix\, and the role of the Devon landscape in her journey of grief. \nSays Anna: “All writers know how difficult it is to get published. For many years\, we’ve all been working away\, mostly on our own\, so being part of a writer’s group has been an enormous source not just of support\, but of sharing of information. \nYaara is delighted the group have found success\, and says writers should never give up. “Who would have thought that all three of us would publish books in the same year\, after so many years of hard work not to mention disappointments!” \nFurther info on the authors and books \nYaara Lahav Gregory’s novel Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) explores the political landscape of 1970s Israel through the story of a young girl in a kibbutz community.  Many years later her daughter is living in Devon and trying to make sense of absences in her family’s history.  Both a coming of age novel and an exploration of clashing ideologies Night Swimming in the Jordan is a portrayal of a country in conflict seen through a young girl’s eyes. \n In Anna Lunk’s Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) Amie\, a young woman suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is sheltering in a derelict cottage in woodland above a Scottish loch.  She has run out of money and is distrustful of the outside world\, but is none the less determined to live life on her own terms.  The novel follows Amie’s first few weeks as she struggles to survive against the odds;\, lonely\, but deeply connected to the natural world. The reader is immersed in her west coast surroundings\, walking in her footsteps. \nSophie Pierce’s The Green Hill\, letters to a son (Unbound) was inspired by the sudden death of her son Felix\, a young man with his life before him.  The book is a celebration of the restorative power of nature and is deeply rooted in the landscapes of South Devon. It explores how beauty\, a sense of place and the passing seasons can help us contend with our own mortality.  Sophie’s previous books\, co-written with Matt Newbury\, include Wild Swimming Torbay \, Wild Swimming Walks Cornwall\, Wild Swimming Walks Dorset and East Devon\, and  Wild Swimming Walks Dartmoor and South Devon.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Old Chapel\, for a couple of hours\, to celebrate the launch of Dorothy Coventon’s new book of collected poems of love and loss: Unpinned From Time. \nWritten as a searing response to a double tragedy in her life\, the poems have won prizes and received much acclaim. They speak with a breathtaking directness to poet and non-poet alike. \nDorothy lives and writes in Cornwall\, has worked as a midwife and lecturer and is now retired. She loves Rumi. \nDorothy will read from her book during the afternoon\, and copies will be available for sale on the day. Traditional Irish music by Turlough O’Carolan will be played by George Black and Jane Weatherby. \nEntry to the event is free but please get an allocated ticket in advance so we know what numbers to expect. \nThe Gallery bar will also be open for the sale of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.

SUMMARY:21-28 March: Wild About Calstock Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:An intergenerational nature-based arts project by The Photobook Project\, connecting older and younger people to each other and the Tamar Valley. This exhibition features the participants’ photographs\, taken throughout the project\, and an accompanying collection of photobooks.  \nWild About Calstock engaged school children at Calstock and Stoke Climsland Primary Schools and Sensory Trust’s dementia-friendly Walk & Laugh Group. Across three guided nature walks\, participants have observed\, documented and shared knowledge whilst also taking part in workshops with local experts (such as foraging with Incredible Edible). With a focus on the winter wetlands\, wildlife and woodlands\, Wild About Calstock connected people across the generations and nurtured a deeper appreciation for their local environment and wildlife. The project also aimed to raise awareness of the Parish Council’s Climate Change Action Plan and the environmental challenges and opportunities that they are currently seeking to address. \nWild About Calstock was commissioned by Calstock Parish Council’s Working Group for Nature Recovery as part of their Environment and Climate emergency Strategic Plan. We have hunted and domesticated them for food; venerated them in our mythologies\, religion and rituals; exploited them for their natural resources; and been inspired by them for our music\, art and poetry. \nIn this talk Stephen Moss will tell the gripping story of this long and eventful relationship through ten key species from all seven of the world’s continents. DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Co-operative Big Band who are returning to the Old Chapel after an excellent performance last year. \nFormed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils  by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing at as a fund raiser for Calstock Arts. \nThe Cooperative Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. DESCRIPTION:A labour of love on multiple levels\, My Darling Clementine – the sobriquet of spouses Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish – began as a homage to classic country duets of the 60’s and 70’s á la George & Tammy and Johnny & June. Their latest album is called “Country Darkness” – a collaboration with keyboard genius Steve Nieve (The Attractions / The Imposters)\, which sees them reinterpreting the country songs of Elvis Costello.  \nReleased in November 2020 it charted in both the UK and European Americana charts receiving unanimous praise along the way \nDuring the past 9 years they have played over 800 shows around the world\,  won numerous awards and have more than earned their own bona fides\, with their wry yet heart-on-sleeve song-craft spotlighting the vagaries of romance and the human condition\,  and their match-made-in-heaven harmonies \n “King and Dalgleish have earned their place in the role call of great country duettists” – UNCUT  \n “MDC mix country gloom with excellent musicianship and very fine songs.” The Guardian \n “King and Dalgleish have re-invented the country duet” – The mingling of these two voices is just heavenly”  Mojo \n “One of the most exquisitely pained country albums of the year comes from England” New York Daily News \nTheir career started with the 2011 debut “How Do You Plead?”\, produced by Neil Brockbank (Nick Lowe)and featuring some of London’s finest musicians from the 70’s pub rock era. \nReleased in 2011\, it was immediately acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. Country Music People called it; “The greatest British country record ever made” \nSuch praise led to a US record deal and invitations to appear at the Americana Music Association in Nashville and SXSW in Austin in 2013 \nThe follow-up\, “The Reconciliation\,” produced by Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley) and featuring guest appearances from Kinky Freidman and The Brodsky Quartet only enhanced the bands growing reputation and received a similar critical response with the New York Daily News choosing it as ‘album of the month’ while Popmatters put it in their Top 10 Country Albums of 2013. \nTheir next move was a slight departure as they the collaborated with best selling crime writer\, and avowed country music fan\, Mark Billingham on the story and song project The Other Half. \nBillingham wrote a dark\, nourish tale of murder\, lust and revenge around eight of King & Dalgleish songs. Guy will talk to us about ‘35 Years of Trying to be Useful – whatever that means for a farmer\, cook and parent in 2023” \nGuy is an inspirational\, passionate\, opinionated and admired figure in the world of organic farming\, who still spends more time in the fields than in the boardroom. Twice awarded BBC Radio 4 Farmer of the Year\, Guy is passionate about sharing with others the organic farming and business knowledge he has accumulated over the last three decades. His video rants have provided a powerful platform to do this\, with a video on pesticides going viral on Facebook to reach 5.6 million views and 91\,000 shares. His weekly veg box newsletters connect customers to the farm with refreshingly honest accounts of the trials and tribulations of producing organic food\, and the occasional rant about farming\, ethical and business issues he feels strongly about. \nGuy has always believed that organic food should not be elitist\, but accessible for everyone. He has built Riverford to give a fair deal to all – growers\, staff\, customers and the planet. DESCRIPTION:The Cornish theatre company\, Poppanoodle Theatre and their latest show\, ‘Two Marys\, Five Jacks and One Very Big Shoe’ are coming to Calstock Arts. The show is aimed at 2 to 5 year olds and there will be two  performances (morning and afternoon)\, one during (1100) and one after school (1600). \nThe show will last about 40 minutes \nCalstock Arts has contacted local schools and pre schools and it is hoped that some schools will bring their children to the school time performance\, though there may be some tickets left. \nThe later performance (1600) is for those that will come with their family or carers. \nThe performance is based on a story of Wee Willie Winkie who lives with his sister Mary\, Mary\, Quite Contrary and his mother the Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe. Wee Willie Winkie wants to have some fun before bed one night and acts out a play to his mother with the help of his sister and the audience. Numerous nursery rhymes are recreated in this fast-paced production for children of 2 to 5 years. With laughter\, music and song this piece has something for little ones and their grown-ups. \nCalstock Parish Council have very kindly provided a grant towards the cost of this performance. Therefore we are able to offer tickets for £1 per child. SUMMARY:18 June: Taiko Drumming Workshop @ 1500 SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Taiko drums have been around for a couple of thousand years\, traditionally used in the background to keep the beat for dancers and singers during festivals or to create the sound effects offstage in Noh and Kabuki theatre.  As a performance art in its own right\, it is actually quite new\, having been developed in the 1950s by a Japanese jazz drummer\, Daihachi Oguchi.  Since then\, the art of taiko drumming has spread across the globe\, including the South West of England! \nTaiko South West comes under the umbrella of Kagemusha Taiko\, founded in 1998 by Artistic Director\, Jonathan Kirby.  Our Taiko Centre is near Newton Abbot in Devon\,  where we offer the company’s adult performing group\, Tano Taiko\, as well as taiko experiences for schools and other organisations throughout the South West. \nIn our workshops\, participants get to grips with the basics of taiko drumming\, try out some simple drills and learn a fun choreographed piece.  Whilst not marketed as therapeutic\, there are many benefits to taiko drumming:  it’s great physical exercise and good “brain gym”.  It’s also a lot of fun and can lead to a real sense of achievement. \nSuitable for all ages over 12. \nPrevious workshop participants have said: \n“A fantastic day.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to come again.  It’s definitely something I could get into.” \n“We had a great time. Humanity’s influence continues to become more apparent\, small settlements make way for hamlets\, hamlets become villages\, villages become towns. Eventually\, the river reaches the industrial revolution’s Royal Albert bridge and 20th century’s subsequent Tamar bridge\, before finally opening up to the mass of water beyond. Watch the video here to hear about the new show. \nLiza’s thirty-year career has encompassed music\, theatre and comedy\, from Glyndebourne Opera through West End musical theatre and as one-third of the British satirical comedy group\, Fascinating Aida. Her solo career as concert performer and recording artist showcases a talent for re-discovering\, re-inventing and re-imagining timeless classics and lost gems. Daughter of celebrated screen writer Jack Pulman and actor Barbara Young\, Liza’s upbringing gave her a deep love of theatre\, movies and music. Liza Pulman Sings Streisand played West End runs to packed houses and five-star reviews and\, most recently\, her new show\, The Heart Of It opened at London’s The Other Palace in January\, adding extra shows in March due to public demand. \n‘Quite simply\, superb… Liza Pulman is a force of nature’  \nBritish Theatre  \nJoe Stilgoe is an internationally acclaimed singer\, pianist and songwriter\, known for writing songs that feel like classics\, and adapting classics so they sound like they’ve just been written. Growing up surrounded by music – his parents are songwriter and TV personality Richard Stilgoe and opera singer Annabel Hunt – Joe’s career extends across theatre\, TV and radio. He’s a regular on Radio 4 on shows like Loose Ends and The Horne Section and he has worked with some of the finest orchestras and bands in the world. Joe has released 8 albums\, 5 of which topped the UK Jazz chart. Joe is also a regular guest and presenter on JazzFM and Radio 3. SUMMARY:17 March: Co-operative Big Band @ 1915
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Co-operative Big Band\, formed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils  by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing at The Old Chapel as a fund raiser towards a new stage at the Old Chapel. \nThe Cooperative Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. The line up consists of a standard rhythm section\, trumpets\, and trombones and a large saxophone section. \nCome and listen to these great young people; the musicians of tomorrow! DESCRIPTION:Guy Shrubsole is a writer and environmental campaigner. He has worked for Rewilding Britain\, Friends of the Earth\, the UK Government’s Department of Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture. \nHe has written widely for publications such as the Guardian and New Statesman. His first book Who Owns England? was an instant Sunday Times best seller. Calstock Arts are very pleased to welcome him to the Old Chapel to talk about his latest book\, Lost Rain Forests of Britain\, which Chris Packman describes as ‘A treasure full of woodland jewels\, rare\, precious and beautiful’ \nIn 2020\, Guy moved from London to Devon. As he explored the wooded valleys\, rivers and tors of Dartmoor\, Guy discovered a spectacular habitat that he had never encountered before: temperate rainforest. Entranced\, he spend the following months investigating the history\, ecology and distribution of rainforests across England\, Wales and Scotland. Britain\, Guy discovered\, was once a rainforest nation. \nHis book is the story of a unique habitat that has been so ravaged\, most people today don’t realise it exists. Temperate rainforest may once have covered up to one-fifth of Britain and played host to a dazzling variety of luminous life-forms\, inspiring Celtic druids\, Welsh wizards\, Romantic poets\, and Arthur Conan Doyle’s most loved creations. Though only fragments now remain\, they form a rare and internationally important habitat\, home to lush ferns and beardy lichens\, pine martens and pied flycatchers. But why are even environmentalists unaware of their existence? DESCRIPTION:Fun team quiz including delicious soup and a roll \nOur annual quiz is back after a brief break for COVID! \nOur chosen charity this year is Parkinson’s UK\, a charity very dear to Calstock Arts and may others\, we expect. \nCome and join in a fun event in aid of this very good cause. Ticket price includes our famed winter warming selection of home-made soups\, and bread\, in the interval. There will also be a raffle with some excellent prizes\, so please bring change to spend!! \nTeams should be a maximum of 6. If you don’t have a team\, let us know on arrival and we’ll endeavour to slot you into one – yours could be the winning team! \nPlease note that when purchasing tickets\, you will be charged the usual ticket fee but 20% of this will be donated to Parkinson’s UK by We Got Tickets. They will also give you an option to add a donation or round up your purchase to a whole number. DESCRIPTION:Returning to The Old Chapel after two successful shows in the past\, Wurlitza deliver so much more than a soundtrack to silent films. Their choreography\, split second timing and hours of rehearsal combine to deliver a unique cinematic and musical experience. Blending old and new\, classical\, jazz\, pop and more\, Wurlitza cross genres and defy convention. \nTheir latest film is the The Kid: A life-affirming love story between a tramp (Charlie Chaplin) and his adopted son (Jackie Coogan). Originally advertised as “six reels of joy”\, The Kid broke all barriers of convention\, being the first film to combine dramatic action\, a strong storyline and slapstick comedy. It was Chaplin’s first feature length film as a director and became the second-highest grossing film of 1921. \nTheir soundtrack for the Kid includes music by David Bowie\, Sham 69\, The Beatles\, Nick Lowe\, Django Reinhardt\, Debussy and Chopin. \nIn a departure from Wurlitza’s usual hard hitting films\, The Kid is completely suitable for all ages. Wurlitza will be accompanying The Kid with another comic short film. \nChaplin’s story is one of rags to riches; as a child he spent time in London workhouses and lived for a while on the streets after his mother was admitted to an assylum. Chaplin’s difficult early start made him a man of enormous compassion. \nMuch of the magic of the film is the chemistry between Charlie Chaplin\, and the astonishingly precocious Jackie Coogan\, which is a delight to watch. \nJackie Coogan became the child star of his generation\, earning over three million dollars\, which would have been due to him on his 21st birthday. However\, five months before he came of age his father died in a car crash\, of which Jackie was the only survivor. His money was frittered away by his mother and step father\, leaving him nearly penniless. This led to a law suit that resulted in the passing of the Coogan Act\, that protects the earnings of child actors. \nJackie Coogan continued his successful acting career as an adult\, later being cast as Uncle Fester in the Adams Family. \n“Why does Wurlitza work? Because they bring magic. And that is never a bad thing.” \n“I would travel to another continent to see Wurlitza.”
