Learn the truth\, with an evening of live music\, fiery discussion\, intrigue and debate.  \nJoin Elizabeth Sharkey as she completely rewrites the history of British pop music\, interviewed by her husband\, musician Fergal Sharkey. \nSharkey’s debut book\, Why Britain Rocked: How Rock Became Roll and Took Over the World travels deep into Britain’s history to trace the events that led to its twentieth century musical explosion. Completely rewriting the history of British pop music\, Why Britain Rocked argues that The Beatles’ arrival that so surprised the world really shouldn’t have been a surprise at all. A trained actress\, Elizabeth’s previous career has been working extensively in television and film. She is also recognised as one of the UK’s leading voice-over artists.\nhttps://www.whybritainrocked.co.uk/ \nPraise for Why Britain Rocked:\n“This book will lovingly hold your hand as it takes you through the sociological history of our islands and their music\, accompanied by an absolutely banging playlist and an extensive online archive that accompanies every chapter”. Eliza Carthy\n“It’s certainly a new spin on the age-old origins of British rock and roll and with such an erudite book as this one\, it will be interesting to see where Elizabeth Sharkey goes next. For now\, ‘Why Britain Rocked’ should be on every music fan’s literary radar. Prepare to be enlightened.” Louderthanwar.com\n‘An unexpected treasure trove of exploration\, academic rigour and a welcome\, bold attempt at re-framing the history of British pop music’ – Classic Rock \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:15 November: Chantal Lyons-The Return of Britain's Wild Boar @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Big\, messy and mysterious – crossing paths with a wild boar can conjure fear and joy in equal measure. Driven to extinction seven hundred years ago\, a combination of the species’ own tenacity and illegal releases from the 1980s has seen several populations of this beast of myth begin to roam English and Scottish woods once more. \nTheir habitat-regenerating actions may benefit a host of other wildlife; but unlike beavers\, these ecosystem engineers remain unloved by many. Why is there no clamour to reintroduce them across the land? And\, with the few boar in England threatened by poaching and culling\, why are we not doing more to prevent their re-extinction? \nChantal Lyons moved to the boar’s stronghold of the Forest of Dean to get up close and personal with this complex\, intelligent and quirky species. And she met with people across Britain and beyond who welcome them – or want them gone. From Toulouse and Barcelona where they are growing in number and boldness\, to the woods of Kent and Sussex where they are fading away again\, to Inverness-shire where re-wilders embrace their presence\, join Chantal as she reveals what it might take for us to coexist with wild boar. \n  \nChantal is a writer and naturalist\, with a background in social and environmental sciences. By day\, she is a science communicator at Mindfully Wired Communications. She previously worked for the Marine Stewardship Council. Chantal’s book Groundbreakers was sparked when she first went to the Forest of Dean in 2014 to interview local residents about their experiences of living with wild boar\, for what she thought would never become more than a Masters dissertation. But the story of this myth-like creature and its return to Britain took hold of her – and has never let go

Then you will have seen Marcus Williams\, Curator of National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled he is coming to talk to us about ocean conservation\, the National Marine Aquarium and his role as the curator at the largest public aquarium in the UK. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT 13 October: Taiko Drumming Workshop @ 1100-1300
DESCRIPTION:Following the extremely successful workshop in June 2023\, the Taiko Drummers  are returning to Calstock Arts by popular demand to give another workshop followed by a performance of their own. \n(https://www.taikosouthwest.org.uk/) \nTaiko drums have been around for a couple of thousand years\, traditionally used in the background to keep the beat for dancers and singers during festivals or creating the sound effects offstage in Noh and Kabuki theatre. As a performance art\, it is relatively new\, having been developed in the 1950s by the Japanese jazz drummer Daihachi Oguchi. Since then\, the art of Taiko drumming has spread across the globe\, including to the South West of England. \nThe workshop\, which lasts 2 hours\,  gives the participants an opportunity to learn some of the history and background of Taiko drumming\, get to grips with the basics of drumming and try out some simple drills. The workshop culminates in everyone learning a fun choreographed piece to play together.  Whilst not marketed as therapeutic\, there are many benefits to Taiko drumming: it’s great physical exercise and good “brain gym”. It’s also a lot of fun and can result in a real sense of achievement. \nhttps://vimeo.com/598854061 \nhttps://vimeo.com/609717122 \n Quotes from previous workshop participants:\n“A fantastic day. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to come again.  It’s definitely something I could get into”.\n“We had a great time. Thank you for the warm welcome. If we weren’t so far away\, we’d definitely join you more regularly”.

SUMMARY:19 September: From Honey Bees to Dairy Cattle- Double Bill @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Man has intervened in nature and his effect has been profound. Calstock Arts is proud to present two speakers looking at aspects of this – Michael Head and Dale Wood \nVet\, Michael (Spike) Head will look at: \n‘The Challenges and Solutions of Dairying in the ‘New World’ \nMichael will cover the changes in the dairy industry\, both local and global\, that have occurred through his career. With the environment and sustainability in mind references will be made to cow health\, medicine use and the management of the environment. The talk is sure to generate discussion. \nApiarist\, Dale Wood will speak on: \n‘Honey Bees…and Almost Everything Else’ \nHoney bees are amazing creatures. Their life cycle from egg to adult is a biological wonder. The evolution started when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. They came through several mass extinctions and they survive still despite the damage done to their habitat. This touches on many aspects of honeybee life\, and the struggles imposed on them\, often by us. \nMichael Head (aka Spike) qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994. He has a Certificate in Cattle Health and Production and a Diploma in Bovine Reproduction. Michael’s first job was in St Columb Major from where he moved to Somerset stayed until his return three years ago to support farmers both sides of the Tamar. He now works locally and nationally as a veterinary trainer. Michael has travelled extensively\, with a couple of short trips to Mozambique and Uganda training farmers and advisors in animal health and a project in Trinidad and Tobago where he investigated a tropical disease in humans and was a ‘doctor’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a keen birdwatcher. \nDale Wood is a retired teacher who started beekeeping on a whim just a few years before retirement. Once free from the shackles of a daytime job\, colony numbers grew rapidly and after 12 years of beekeeping\, numbers now are around the 25 to 30 mark. His eight apiaries are sited in the Upton Cross area of SE Cornwall. Dale is a trustee and council member of Cornwall Beekeeping Association\, he is the apiary  manager for Kit Hill beekeeping group and he runs weekly apiary sessions and a ‘”Beekeeping for Beginners” course. \n*Both speakers have most kindly agreed that all proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to funding the purchase of a new projector for the main hall at Calstock Arts. \n  \n

It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding experiments in Europe. \n“Wonderful…An inspiring true story that shows how we can revive nature and restore hope” \nPatrick Barkham\, The Guardian \n“A lyrical hymn to the self-healing of the English countryside.” \n— Dog and Wolf \nDirected by David Allen \nTrailer https://youtu.be/Uw084uIMo8Y?si=NTDptkcqly3Yha2I \nhttps://www.wildingmovie.com/ \ntwitter.com/MetFilmDistrib \ninstagram.com/metfilmdistribution/

SUMMARY:9 May: Power to the People - Cornwall's Climate Stories
DESCRIPTION:Power to the People is the latest film in the superb Cornwall’s Climate Stories series directed by Calstock’s own Bryony Stokes. \nBryony will also be in attendance to provide more in depth background to the making of this film\, she will also be accompanied by experts from the film to answer your energy questions. \nWith fantastic resources of wind\, sun\, tides\, geothermal heat and critical minerals\, Cornwall could drive the whole country’s clean energy revolution. \nHowever\, the UK’s 100-year-old electricity grid means this potential can’t currently be harnessed – while huge numbers of local people are living in poorly insulated homes they can’t afford to heat. \nPower to the People explores the exciting opportunities and huge challenges facing us as we wean ourselves off fossil fuels – from a farmer who’s found a novel way to combine food production with solar panels\, opportunities to use our historic heritage to power the future\, and projects to harness the amazing untapped heat 5km down in the Earth’s crust. \nQ&A panel  \nSimon Miller from the Wadebridge renewable energy network\nMatt Shepherd from ZLC Energy\nAndy Neville climate advisor Stoke Climsland \nFor more information  about Bryany’s films: https://www.cornwallclimate.org

SUMMARY:25 April: SOLD OUT Screening- SIX INCHES OF SOIL with Marina O'Connell
DESCRIPTION:Six Inches of Soil is a British independent full feature documentary shining a spotlight on soil health and regenerative farming. It tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil\, our health and provide for local communities. The aims of the film are to sound the alarm on a broken system\, but to also give hope that there is a way to fix it; to inspire farmers to adopt agroecological and regenerative farming practices; and to encourage consumers\, food corporations and policymakers to support their efforts.  \nMarina O’Connell will be leading in the question and answer session after the film and will also talk about her farm\, regenerative farming and working to increase the number of farms adopting more soil friendly farming practices. \nShe is the author of “Designing regenerative Food Systems\, and why we need them now” – A unique toolkit of resilient food production systems\, including biodynamic\, organic\, agroforestry\,  regenerative\, agroecological and permaculture methods\, with illustrated case studies\, references and resources. \nHalf the food we eat in the UK is produced by about 180\,000 farmers\, who manage 70% of our land.  Current “industrial” mainstream farming practices significantly contribute to soil degradation\, biodiversity loss and climate change. Regenerative farming practices\, (within an agroecological system) promote healthier soils\, provide healthier\, affordable food\, restore biodiversity and sequester carbon.  \nSix Inches of Soil is a story of three new farmers on the first year of their regenerative journey to heal the soil and help transform the food system – Anna Jackson\, a Lincolnshire 11th generation arable and sheep farmer; Adrienne Gordon\, a Cambridgeshire small-scale vegetable farmer; and Ben Thomas\, who rears pasture fed beef cattle in Cornwall.  \nAs the trio of young farmers strive to adopt regenerative practices and create viable businesses\, they meet seasoned mentors – John Pawsey in Suffolk\, Nic Renison in Cumbria and Marina O’Connell in Devon – who help them on their journey.  \nThey are joined by other experts – Henry Dimbleby\, Ian Wilkinson\, Mike Berners-Lee\, Vicki Hird\, Dee Woods\, Tim Lang\, Hannah Jones\, Satish Kumar\, Nicole Masters\, Tom Pearson – providing wisdom and solutions from a growing movement of people who are dedicated to changing the trajectory for food\, farming and the planet. \nThe 96 minute film\, with its original music score and beautiful animation\, was completed at the end of 2023\, and was launched at the Oxford Real Farming Conference on 4th January 2024. It was also shown at COP 28 in December 2023 through EIT Food Systems. \n“WOW @sixinchesofsoil what an amazing 🤩 movie! I never thought I could watch a movie about soil and get emotional” Michael Aggrey at COP28 \nhttps://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/03/the-regenerative-farm-working-to-improve-soil-without-fertilisers? \n

SUMMARY:April 14: One Writers’ Group: Three Routes to Publication @ 6pm
DESCRIPTION:WEST COUNTRY AUTHORS TO SHARE TRICKS OF THE TRADE \nThree Devon authors\, who are all members of the same writing group\, will be sharing their experience of the rocky road to publication\, in an attempt to help other writers get published. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled to welcome\, Yaara Lahav Gregory\, Anna Lunk\, and Sophie Pierce\, in conversation  at the Old Chapel  with their One Writers’ Group: Three Routes to Publication. \nAnna Lunk\, a one time resident of Calstock and member of Girl’s Own Theatre lives in Staverton\, while Sophie Pierce and Yaara Lahav Gregory live in Ashburton. They are all members of Ashburton Writers’ Group. \nAll three have had books published in the last year\, but know what a lonely business writing is\, and how difficult it is to get published. The trio will share their experiences\, reading extracts from their books\, talking about their journeys to publication and discussing the support and encouragement they received from their writing group. \nTheir books are very different: Yaara’s Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) is a novel set in 1970s Israel\, but which also incorporates life in Devon. Anna’s novel Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) is the story of a young girl navigating life on her own after being in care\, while Sophie’s memoir The Green Hill: Letters to a Son (Unbound)  is about the sudden death of her son Felix\, and the role of the Devon landscape in her journey of grief. \nSays Anna: “All writers know how difficult it is to get published. For many years\, we’ve all been working away\, mostly on our own\, so being part of a writer’s group has been an enormous source not just of support\, but of sharing of information. \nYaara is delighted the group have found success\, and says writers should never give up. “Who would have thought that all three of us would publish books in the same year\, after so many years of hard work not to mention disappointments!” \nFurther info on the authors and books \nYaara Lahav Gregory’s novel Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) explores the political landscape of 1970s Israel through the story of a young girl in a kibbutz community.  Many years later her daughter is living in Devon and trying to make sense of absences in her family’s history.  Both a coming of age novel and an exploration of clashing ideologies Night Swimming in the Jordan is a portrayal of a country in conflict seen through a young girl’s eyes. \n In Anna Lunk’s Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) Amie\, a young woman suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is sheltering in a derelict cottage in woodland above a Scottish loch.  She has run out of money and is distrustful of the outside world\, but is none the less determined to live life on her own terms.  The novel follows Amie’s first few weeks as she struggles to survive against the odds;\, lonely\, but deeply connected to the natural world. The reader is immersed in her west coast surroundings\, walking in her footsteps. \nSophie Pierce’s The Green Hill\, letters to a son (Unbound) was inspired by the sudden death of her son Felix\, a young man with his life before him.  The book is a celebration of the restorative power of nature and is deeply rooted in the landscapes of South Devon. It explores how beauty\, a sense of place and the passing seasons can help us contend with our own mortality.  Sophie’s previous books\, co-written with Matt Newbury\, include Wild Swimming Torbay \, Wild Swimming Walks Cornwall\, Wild Swimming Walks Dorset and East Devon\, and  Wild Swimming Walks Dartmoor and South Devon.

SUMMARY:3 February: My Darling Clementine (see competition below)
DESCRIPTION:A labour of love on multiple levels\, My Darling Clementine – the sobriquet of spouses Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish – began as a homage to classic country duets of the 60’s and 70’s á la George & Tammy and Johnny & June. Their latest album is called “Country Darkness” – a collaboration with keyboard genius Steve Nieve (The Attractions / The Imposters)\, which sees them reinterpreting the country songs of Elvis Costello.  \nReleased in November 2020 it charted in both the UK and European Americana charts receiving unanimous praise along the way \nDuring the past 9 years they have played over 800 shows around the world\,  won numerous awards and have more than earned their own bona fides\, with their wry yet heart-on-sleeve song-craft spotlighting the vagaries of romance and the human condition\,  and their match-made-in-heaven harmonies \n “King and Dalgleish have earned their place in the role call of great country duettists” – UNCUT \n “MDC mix country gloom with excellent musicianship and very fine songs.” The Guardian \n “King and Dalgleish have re-invented the country duet” – The mingling of these two voices is just heavenly”  Mojo \n “One of the most exquisitely pained country albums of the year comes from England” New York Daily News \nTheir career started with the 2011 debut “How Do You Plead?”\, produced by Neil Brockbank (Nick Lowe)and featuring some of London’s finest musicians from the 70’s pub rock era. \nReleased in 2011\, it was immediately acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. Country Music People called it; “The greatest British country record ever made” \nSuch praise led to a US record deal and invitations to appear at the Americana Music Association in Nashville and SXSW in Austin in 2013 \nThe follow-up\, “The Reconciliation\,” produced by Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley) and featuring guest appearances from Kinky Freidman and The Brodsky Quartet only enhanced the bands growing reputation and received a similar critical response with the New York Daily News choosing it as ‘album of the month’ while Popmatters put it in their Top 10 Country Albums of 2013. \nTheir next move was a slight departure as they the collaborated with best selling crime writer\, and avowed country music fan\, Mark Billingham on the story and song project The Other Half. \nBillingham wrote a dark\, nourish tale of murder\, lust and revenge around eight of King & Dalgleish songs. The Other Half became an album\, an audio book\, and a stage show and featured contributions from actor David Morrisey and singer songwriter Graham Parker \nAfter 18 months of touring The Other Half\, including a run at The Edinburgh Festival  Michael and Lou returned to the studio for album no. 4. \nRe-uniting with producer Neil Brockbank\,  Still Testifying was released in the summer 2017. Stylistically\, it was a further shifting away from classic country to embrace gospel and country soul and was widely acclaimed with many writers praising the new direction; \n“Where gospel\, country and Southern soul happily collide. It’s terrific.” UnCut\,   ‘this more Delaney & Bonnie than George & Tammy’ Record Collector     \nListen to them here: https://youtu.be/yFP6X5FKUw4?si=UdGxqSnPBK49MAO1 \nCOMPETITION – all advance ticket holders included in a draw to win one of two copies of the ‘How Do You Plead?’ album. SUMMARY:30 November: Guy Singh-Watson (Riverford) @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Self-confessed veg nerd\, Guy Singh-Watson has over the last 30 years taken Riverford from one man and a wheelbarrow delivering homegrown organic veg to friends\, to a national veg box scheme delivering to around 50\,000 customers a week. Guy will talk to us about ‘35 Years of Trying to be Useful – whatever that means for a farmer\, cook and parent in 2023” \nGuy is an inspirational\, passionate\, opinionated and admired figure in the world of organic farming\, who still spends more time in the fields than in the boardroom. Twice awarded BBC Radio 4 Farmer of the Year\, Guy is passionate about sharing with others the organic farming and business knowledge he has accumulated over the last three decades. His video rants have provided a powerful platform to do this\, with a video on pesticides going viral on Facebook to reach 5.6 million views and 91\,000 shares. His weekly veg box newsletters connect customers to the farm with refreshingly honest accounts of the trials and tribulations of producing organic food\, and the occasional rant about farming\, ethical and business issues he feels strongly about. \nGuy has always believed that organic food should not be elitist\, but accessible for everyone. SUMMARY:9 November: Martin Rowson - Giving the Gift of Offence
DESCRIPTION:Martin Rowson is a multi-award-winning political cartoonist\, author\, ranter\, illustrator\, broadcaster and poet who’s been assailing the world of politics and the news with his thought-provoking images for 40 years. \nMartin was last at Calstock Arts with his Cartoon History of Brexit in October 2019. He returns to the Old Chapel with his new show “Giving the Gift of Offence“\, where Martin takes us through 40 years of British Politics\, with both his personal and his cartoon responses to the individuals he has met: including the perennial challenges of having to work out how to draw the “fresh meat” of each new Prime Minister\, alongside the cavalcade of events we’ve all witnessed and he’s depicted. \nRefreshingly indiscreet in revealing the people beneath the pomp and spin (as well as spilling the beans on the true nature of journalism)\, this new show will be fully illustrated.
