DESCRIPTION:The Crisis in British Farming \nBritish Farming is on its knees\, climate change\, labour shortages and the uncertain government support are three of the numerous factors not helping. But the main issue is that farmers cannot survive the prices\, trading terms and insecurity imposed on them by the Big Six supermarkets. Many farmers have already called it a day and many are in crisis. 61% of farmers fear they will go bust in the next 18 months. Guy will explain the issues and his campaign to try to improve the lot of the farmer. \nGuy is an inspirational\, passionate\, opinionated and admired figure in the world of organic farming\, who still spends more time in the fields than in the boardroom. Twice awarded BBC Radio 4 Farmer of the Year\, Guy is passionate about sharing with others the organic farming and business knowledge he has accumulated over the last three decades. \nGuy has always seen profit as a means not an end. Rejecting numerous investor approaches\, Guy always vowed not to allow Riverford to become an enterprise driven purely by the bottom line\, or controlled by outside investors. \nHe stuck to his word\, and on June 8th 2018\, sold 74% of Riverford to its employees at about a quarter of the market value. In May 2023\, he sold his remaining shares\, making Riverford 100% employee owned. \nGuy continues to play a very active role in the next phase of Riverford’s journey. He is currently working on a reintroduction project for the wildcat and increasing the numbers of harvest mice and glow worms. He is also rewilding his 300 acre farm near Lifton\, Devon. \nDerek is a leading force behind “Keep it Wild” a charity set up to fight against the biodiversity crisis and his talk will outline what the charity is doing and how you can help. \nAuthor of a number of acclaimed books\, Derek’s latest “Hunt for the Shadow Wolf” attempts to uncover the true nature of this animal and what role it could play in Britain`s landscape.

DESCRIPTION:Big\, messy and mysterious – crossing paths with a wild boar can conjure fear and joy in equal measure. Driven to extinction seven hundred years ago\, a combination of the species’ own tenacity and illegal releases from the 1980s has seen several populations of this beast of myth begin to roam English and Scottish woods once more. \nTheir habitat-regenerating actions may benefit a host of other wildlife; but unlike beavers\, these ecosystem engineers remain unloved by many. Why is there no clamour to reintroduce them across the land? And\, with the few boar in England threatened by poaching and culling\, why are we not doing more to prevent their re-extinction? \nChantal Lyons moved to the boar’s stronghold of the Forest of Dean to get up close and personal with this complex\, intelligent and quirky species. And she met with people across Britain and beyond who welcome them – or want them gone. From Toulouse and Barcelona where they are growing in number and boldness\, to the woods of Kent and Sussex where they are fading away again\, to Inverness-shire where re-wilders embrace their presence\, join Chantal as she reveals what it might take for us to coexist with wild boar. \n  \nChantal is a writer and naturalist\, with a background in social and environmental sciences. The evidence is clear that we must increase the speed with which we are helping nature to recover if we are to prevent ecological breakdown. \nWildlife Groundswell is bringing together highly committed organisations and enthusiastic parishioners with the purpose of bridging the gap between policy and nature recovery action. \nThe theme of the Wildlife Groundswell gathering is community involvement and volunteering opportunities. \nThe participants of the gathering have been asked for their vision\, actions and engagements. \n\nHow does their role relate to Calstock Parish or its parishioners?\nCall to action. What can we and our network of friends\, and family do?\nEngagement opportunities. How do we participate not just observe? Then you will have seen Marcus Williams\, Curator of National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled he is coming to talk to us about ocean conservation\, the National Marine Aquarium and his role as the curator at the largest public aquarium in the UK. Marcus will also focus on the importation of an olive ridley turtle that was featured in the Secrets of the Aquarium series. \nMarcus Williams is the Curator of the National Marine Aquarium which is the largest public aquarium in the UK. As an aquarium it is unique because it is part of the Ocean Conservation Trust\, a charity that focusses on connecting people with the Ocean. Calstock Arts is proud to present two speakers looking at aspects of this – Michael Head and Dale Wood \nVet\, Michael (Spike) Head will look at: \n‘The Challenges and Solutions of Dairying in the ‘New World’ \nMichael will cover the changes in the dairy industry\, both local and global\, that have occurred through his career. With the environment and sustainability in mind references will be made to cow health\, medicine use and the management of the environment. The talk is sure to generate discussion. \nApiarist\, Dale Wood will speak on: \n‘Honey Bees…and Almost Everything Else’ \nHoney bees are amazing creatures. Their life cycle from egg to adult is a biological wonder. The evolution started when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. They came through several mass extinctions and they survive still despite the damage done to their habitat. This touches on many aspects of honeybee life\, and the struggles imposed on them\, often by us. \nMichael Head (aka Spike) qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994. He has a Certificate in Cattle Health and Production and a Diploma in Bovine Reproduction. Michael’s first job was in St Columb Major from where he moved to Somerset stayed until his return three years ago to support farmers both sides of the Tamar. He now works locally and nationally as a veterinary trainer. Michael has travelled extensively\, with a couple of short trips to Mozambique and Uganda training farmers and advisors in animal health and a project in Trinidad and Tobago where he investigated a tropical disease in humans and was a ‘doctor’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a keen birdwatcher. \nDale Wood is a retired teacher who started beekeeping on a whim just a few years before retirement. Once free from the shackles of a daytime job\, colony numbers grew rapidly and after 12 years of beekeeping\, numbers now are around the 25 to 30 mark. His eight apiaries are sited in the Upton Cross area of SE Cornwall. Dale is a trustee and council member of Cornwall Beekeeping Association\, he is the apiary  manager for Kit Hill beekeeping group and he runs weekly apiary sessions and a ‘”Beekeeping for Beginners” course. \n*Both speakers have most kindly agreed that all proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to funding the purchase of a new projector for the main hall at Calstock Arts. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Six Inches of Soil is a British independent full feature documentary shining a spotlight on soil health and regenerative farming. It tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil\, our health and provide for local communities. The aims of the film are to sound the alarm on a broken system\, but to also give hope that there is a way to fix it; to inspire farmers to adopt agroecological and regenerative farming practices; and to encourage consumers\, food corporations and policymakers to support their efforts.  \nMarina O’Connell will be leading in the question and answer session after the film and will also talk about her farm\, regenerative farming and working to increase the number of farms adopting more soil friendly farming practices. \nShe is the author of “Designing regenerative Food Systems\, and why we need them now” – A unique toolkit of resilient food production systems\, including biodynamic\, organic\, agroforestry\,  regenerative\, agroecological and permaculture methods\, with illustrated case studies\, references and resources. \nHalf the food we eat in the UK is produced by about 180\,000 farmers\, who manage 70% of our land.  Current “industrial” mainstream farming practices significantly contribute to soil degradation\, biodiversity loss and climate change. DESCRIPTION:WEST COUNTRY AUTHORS TO SHARE TRICKS OF THE TRADE \nThree Devon authors\, who are all members of the same writing group\, will be sharing their experience of the rocky road to publication\, in an attempt to help other writers get published. \nCalstock Arts are thrilled to welcome\, Yaara Lahav Gregory\, Anna Lunk\, and Sophie Pierce\, in conversation  at the Old Chapel  with their One Writers’ Group: Three Routes to Publication. \nAnna Lunk\, a one time resident of Calstock and member of Girl’s Own Theatre lives in Staverton\, while Sophie Pierce and Yaara Lahav Gregory live in Ashburton. They are all members of Ashburton Writers’ Group. \nAll three have had books published in the last year\, but know what a lonely business writing is\, and how difficult it is to get published. The trio will share their experiences\, reading extracts from their books\, talking about their journeys to publication and discussing the support and encouragement they received from their writing group. \nTheir books are very different: Yaara’s Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) is a novel set in 1970s Israel\, but which also incorporates life in Devon. Anna’s novel Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) is the story of a young girl navigating life on her own after being in care\, while Sophie’s memoir The Green Hill: Letters to a Son (Unbound)  is about the sudden death of her son Felix\, and the role of the Devon landscape in her journey of grief. \nSays Anna: “All writers know how difficult it is to get published. For many years\, we’ve all been working away\, mostly on our own\, so being part of a writer’s group has been an enormous source not just of support\, but of sharing of information. \nYaara is delighted the group have found success\, and says writers should never give up. “Who would have thought that all three of us would publish books in the same year\, after so many years of hard work not to mention disappointments!” \nFurther info on the authors and books \nYaara Lahav Gregory’s novel Night Swimming in the Jordan (Cinnamon Press) explores the political landscape of 1970s Israel through the story of a young girl in a kibbutz community.  Many years later her daughter is living in Devon and trying to make sense of absences in her family’s history.  Both a coming of age novel and an exploration of clashing ideologies Night Swimming in the Jordan is a portrayal of a country in conflict seen through a young girl’s eyes. \n In Anna Lunk’s Amie’s Rest  (Buzzard Press) Amie\, a young woman suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder is sheltering in a derelict cottage in woodland above a Scottish loch.  She has run out of money and is distrustful of the outside world\, but is none the less determined to live life on her own terms.  The novel follows Amie’s first few weeks as she struggles to survive against the odds;\, lonely\, but deeply connected to the natural world. The reader is immersed in her west coast surroundings\, walking in her footsteps. \nSophie Pierce’s The Green Hill\, letters to a son (Unbound) was inspired by the sudden death of her son Felix\, a young man with his life before him.  The book is a celebration of the restorative power of nature and is deeply rooted in the landscapes of South Devon. It explores how beauty\, a sense of place and the passing seasons can help us contend with our own mortality.  Sophie’s previous books\, co-written with Matt Newbury\, include Wild Swimming Torbay \, Wild Swimming Walks Cornwall\, Wild Swimming Walks Dorset and East Devon\, and  Wild Swimming Walks Dartmoor and South Devon.

They speak with a breathtaking directness to poet and non-poet alike. \nDorothy lives and writes in Cornwall\, has worked as a midwife and lecturer and is now retired. Across three guided nature walks\, participants have observed\, documented and shared knowledge whilst also taking part in workshops with local experts (such as foraging with Incredible Edible). With a focus on the winter wetlands\, wildlife and woodlands\, Wild About Calstock connected people across the generations and nurtured a deeper appreciation for their local environment and wildlife. The project also aimed to raise awareness of the Parish Council’s Climate Change Action Plan and the environmental challenges and opportunities that they are currently seeking to address. \nWild About Calstock was commissioned by Calstock Parish Council’s Working Group for Nature Recovery as part of their Environment and Climate emergency Strategic Plan. SUMMARY:9 February: Co-operative Big Band @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Co-operative Big Band who are returning to the Old Chapel after an excellent performance last year. \nFormed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils  by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing at as a fund raiser for Calstock Arts. \nThe Cooperative Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. The line up consists of a standard rhythm section\, trumpets\, and trombones and a large saxophone section. \nCome and listen to these great young people; the musicians of tomorrow!
