SUMMARY:22 October: The Struggle for Calstock Viaduct @ 1930 SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to host the launch screening of a new documentary film by Neil Gallacher: The Struggle for Calstock Viaduct. \nIt cost huge amounts of time and money. It may have cost lives. And it cost one man his reputation. But it gave us the Tamar Valley as we know and love it today. \nThis short film draws on an outstanding collection of stills in Calstock Parish Archive to tell the story of the long engineering struggle to build the viaduct. Much of it was a battle deep underwater to create the foundations on the riverbed. \nDespite its troubled beginnings\, the viaduct is a crowning success of Edwardian railway engineering. Today it’s one of the outstanding survivors from that era. The valley and the village would be unimaginable without it. \nThe black and white stills at the heart of the film were taken by a shopkeeper in Calstock Fore Street\, Frederick Paul\, who sold them as postcards. His descendants have made his pictures available through the Archive\, and this is the first time they’ve been brought to life in this way. \nThe evening will include a talk by Neil\, who is a retired BBC TV correspondent\, and a Q&A led by retired Civil and Structural Engineer Vic Harman\, a trustee of Calstock Parish Archive and author of “Calstock Viaduct\, 100 Years and More. \nOur timings should suit anyone looking to come and go by train\, whether coming down from Gunnislake\, or up over the viaduct itself.

SUMMARY:6 November: “Missionaries\, Mercenaries and Misfits” - Travels in a Cold Heaven by Glenn Morris F.R.G.S
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk describes the arctic\, its people\, its flora and fauna and the massive threat to its existence. It sheds light on what we can learn from indigenous cultures\, the importance of our bonds with nature and how ‘western white colonialism has shaped our lives and\, unless change happens\, will continue to shape the future. \nGlenn Morris F.R.G.S\, has travelled extensively throughout Arctic regions and spent time living with the Inuit of Northern Greenland and Arctic Canada. He has participated in expeditions following in the footsteps of ‘explorers’ of the ‘Heroic Age’ and conceived the ‘Arctic Voice’ project\, an environmental initiative designed to link young people throughout the Arctic north with children in the U.K. The talk will endeavour to shed some light on what we can learn from indigenous cultures\, the importance of our bonds with nature and how ‘western’ white colonialism has shaped our lives and\, unless change happens\, will continue to shape  our future. \n

SUMMARY:8 November: Budapest Cafe Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to welcome back the Budapest Cafe Orchestra to the Old Chapel \nIn 2009 Christian Garrick established the refreshingly unconventional and snappily attired Budapest Café Orchestra (BCO) with the intention to present a broad range of music from all over the world in the most entertaining and fun way.  BCO perform all their music from memory. Combined their trademark wit and charm\, audiences are left tingling with warmth\, delight and amazement. \nBCO are one of the very busiest acoustic groups for me today playing an average of 75 shows per annum.  Since their inception they have recorded one album every year and in January 2025 made their 16th waxing Goulash Supernova.  BCO are frequent guests to BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. \n“Not so much a band name as a whole genre of its own\, Budapest Café Orchestra embraces an encyclopaedia of music and mischief.”  SCOTSMAN \n“Your music is really great.” Helena Bonham Carter \n“The music is magic in their hands.”  Sean Rafferty BBC Radio 3 \n“Absolutely acoustically electrifying!”  Time Out \nwebsite http://www.budapestcafeorchestra.co.uk \nfacebook https://www.facebook.com/budapestcafeorchestra \ntwitter https://twitter.com/bco100
