SUMMARY:18 April: The Latin Bridge - The second of our festival of Four World Music Concerts
DESCRIPTION:The second in the series of ‘Our Music Planet’ Festival concerts is a celebration of the music from Latin America.  We welcome The Latin Bridge on their first visit to Calstock Arts. It is a vocal and instrumental Latin/Cuban project that was formed in 2016 by the experienced Cuban musician Sergio Marciano Pereda. Joining Sergio (guitar/vocals) is Cristiano Rocha Assis (trumpet)\, Aldofredo Pulido (bass) and Yosmany González García (percussion). A dynamic and vibrant band that are always in a ‘Latin Key’\, bringing the rich rhythms and soul of Latin music to life. Expect a swinging Saturday evening of traditional Cuban Folk\, and from infectious dance grooves (Salsa\, Bossa Nova\, Rumba\, Son..) to passionate Boleros ballads. “From intimate whispers to full-throttle rhythm\, the band delivers a journey through sound that is both thrilling and heartfelt”. \nThe diverse styles of Latin American music offer a musical journey through different cultures and histories\, enriching the global music world with its vibrant rhythms and soulful melodies. Its roots can be traced back to the colonisation of the Americas by Spain\, bringing with it European musical traditions. When blended with African rhythms and the indigenous musical heritage of the Americas\, a unique and colourful music was created. In essence\, the diversity\, rhythm\, and danceable nature of Latin music make it a much loved genre that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers. Its ability to evoke emotions\, inspire movement\, and tell compelling stories through music is why Latin American music is so cherished by people around the world. Here is a taster of what you can expect: \nhttps://youtu.be/cELxGefX3GY?si=MdBbPObBs-AtDReE \n“Their performance glows with sun-drenched lyricism\, effortless interplay and a deep sense of Cuban soul.” \nSergio Marciano was born in Santiago de Cuba and moved to Havana to commence his musical studies in 1989. Before moving to the UK in 2014\, he lived and worked in Spain gaining substantial experience as a session musician and record producer. Sergio has performed extensively in concert venues and festivals in more than 25 countries around the world and has recorded with numerous artists and bands. He continues to be a highly-respected figure on the UK’s Latin music scene. \nCristiano Rocha is originally from Brasilia in Brazil\, and first picked up a trumpet when he was 14 and then taught himself how to play! In 2002\, he travelled to Europe where he performed for 3 years as lead trumpeter in the famous Italian Circus troupe –  ‘Lidia Togni’.

Since moving to London in 2006\, he has performed with a number of jazz\, Bossa Nova and soul bands including a collaboration with  London-based Brazilian multi-instrumentalist\, Gui Tavares. \nAdolfredo Pulido was born in Venezuela and by the age of 7 was playing drums\, then tuba\, trumpet and trombone before taking up bass at the age of 14. Having studied at music school in Venezuela\, he moved to the USA and graduated from the Berklee music school \nin 2003. Now based in the UK\, Alfredo is much in demand around Europe on the Latin\, Jazz and World Music circuits\, performing with acclaimed artists and celebrated for his versatility\, technical skill\, and cultural understanding. \nYosmany González was born in Boyeros\, Cuba. He is a versatile percussionist whose career bridges traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms and contemporary world music. Since relocating to the United Kingdom\, he has become an active presence in the Latin and fusion scenes\, performing with various ensembles. His rhythmic approach blends authenticity and innovation\, carrying forward the spirit of Cuban percussion while engaging in contemporary dialogues with musicians from around the world. \n  \n

SUMMARY:21 March: SINGH Strings - The first of our festival of Four World Music Concerts
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Our Music Planet’ Festival of world music kicks-off with a celebration of the music from the Indian sub-continent. We welcome the Singh Strings to Calstock Arts for their first performance at the Old Chapel. The trio is a truly family affair. Led by Sitar maestro\, Dharambir Singh\, he is accompanied by his two talented sons Kaviraj Singh (Santoor/Voice) and Upneet Singh (Tabla). Weaving together melodic improvisations\, rhythmic cycles\, and soulful compositions\, the ensemble creates an immersive listening experience that transcends cultural boundaries. \nThe performance will take us on a journey through the intricate world of ‘classical’ Raagdhari music that originated in Northern India and dates back many centuries. Raagdhari music is mainly melodic rather than harmonic\, and consists of a basic melodic line played or sung against complex patterns of rhythm. The melody is founded on a raga (Sanskrit for colour or passion)\, comprising a series of five or more musical notes\, and evoking various moods in the listener and performers\, while the rhythm is called tala (clap or beat). The concert will transport you on a soulful journey through a selection of beautiful ragas. Here is a taster of what to expect: \nhttps://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx4pWdrw5xencrZEQyW0bMxhWqxESo7rOG?si=t9Ql_GXgAi6eHBXx \nUstad Dharambir Singh MBE is one of the most prominent and revered figures of Indian classical music in the UK. His soulful Sitar renditions carry the legacy of Raagdhari music\, playing intricate ragas with depth and devotion. He is a pioneer in the nurturing of South Asian arts in the UK\, and was founder and artistic director of South Asian Arts UK (https://www.saa-uk.org/) that has been at the forefront of promoting\, preserving and facilitating South Asian music and dance across the UK for more than 25 years. Dharambir was awarded an MBE for services to music in 2011. \nKaviraj Singh is well known for his mastery of the Santoor and for his mellifluous vocals. Over the years\, he has garnered immense acclaim for his performances\, demonstrating a rare blend of technical brilliance\, emotional depth\, and artistic finesse\, making him a highly sought-after artist in the realm of Indian classical music. \nUpneet Singh has an innate musicality as a Tabla player. He has developed a fine balance between the art of accompaniment and technical skill. His dynamic Tabla rhythms provide the heartbeat to the ensemble\, showcasing dexterity\, grace\, and rhythmic storytelling that are deeply routed in the traditions of Indian classical percussion. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:20 March: Rob Barratt - Poet\, Comic\, Humourist and Singer
DESCRIPTION:Brain tickling\, word mangling performances combine clever word play\, verse and song with satire\, parody and audience participation. Rob deals with the important issues of the day with topics such as squid\, data driven education\, Neanderthal politics\, the weather in relationship with potatoes\, but beneath the humour serious issues lurk. \nThis not only clever but I think it is very funny (Mike Harding) \nWhat a night we had on Friday with the amazing wordsmith Rob Barratt. Funny\, witty\, poignant\, thought-provoking poems and songs\, we were laughing until our ribs hurt one moment and then thinking about the curved balls that life often throws at us the next. A great performer\, Rob immediately engages with his audience and takes them on the journey into his world and it is a wonderful experience” (Watford Folk Club\, June 2024) \nA cracking evening with a talented wordsmith who made audience participation voluntarily enjoyable.” (Liz Williams\, Butterleigh Village Hall\, Devon\, 2024) \nComic Poet’ it says on the card. That’s not the half of it. The man is a velvet tongued assassin\, using charm and humour as a subtle lever to highlight life’s absurdities. It’s all very light and sing-along jocular – but this man is dangerously subversive and his show should be witnessed at all costs at your earliest opportunity. Bloody Funny.” (Barrie Dimond of Festivals for All at Beardy Folk Festival\, Shropshire\, June 2022) \n  \nhttps://robbarratt.wixsite.com/robbarratt \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Keith James returns to the Old Chapel with THE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE. Voice and unusually tuned acoustic guitars\, together with flutes played by Richie Cotterill. \nNick Drake is one of the most revered and loved of all this country’s acoustic Singer-Songwriters. He has given us timeless songs that shed all the tears of life within their fragile yet perfect lines. \nHe recorded three cherished albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. Several meticulously compiled biographies look at every aspect of Nick’s life and music\, throwing light on many shadowy corners of mystery and supposition. \nTwo decades have now passed since Singer/Guitarist Keith James first astonished the whole country with his stunningly beautiful series of concerts. He was the first artist ever to bring these intriguing songs to theatres and arts venues across the UK\, and remains to this day\, the foremost artist devoted to performing Nick’s music in its pure live acoustic form. Over the past 20 years\, Keith has performed over 1000 highly acclaimed concerts in venues across the UK\, Ireland\, Holland\, France\, Italy and Spain including all of Nick’s schools and colleges – even Glastonbury Festival. Keith will be joined by flautist Richie Cotterill. \n‘Musicians brave enough to play the music they really believe in. SUMMARY:20 March Guy Singh- Watson @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:The Crisis in British Farming \nBritish Farming is on its knees\, climate change\, labour shortages and the uncertain government support are three of the numerous factors not helping. But the main issue is that farmers cannot survive the prices\, trading terms and insecurity imposed on them by the Big Six supermarkets. Many farmers have already called it a day and many are in crisis. 61% of farmers fear they will go bust in the next 18 months. Guy will explain the issues and his campaign to try to improve the lot of the farmer. \nGuy is an inspirational\, passionate\, opinionated and admired figure in the world of organic farming\, who still spends more time in the fields than in the boardroom. Twice awarded BBC Radio 4 Farmer of the Year\, Guy is passionate about sharing with others the organic farming and business knowledge he has accumulated over the last three decades. \nGuy has always seen profit as a means not an end. Rejecting numerous investor approaches\, Guy always vowed not to allow Riverford to become an enterprise driven purely by the bottom line\, or controlled by outside investors. \nHe stuck to his word\, and on June 8th 2018\, sold 74% of Riverford to its employees at about a quarter of the market value. In May 2023\, he sold his remaining shares\, making Riverford 100% employee owned. \nGuy continues to play a very active role in the next phase of Riverford’s journey. He wants to prove that business can be a force for good\, and is confident that staff ownership will protect and develop Riverford’s model of sustainable food production and lock in place the values on which the business was founded. \n* All Guys fee for the event will go to the charity Ripple Effect https://rippleeffect.org/get-involved/partner-with-us/corporate-partnerships/riverford-and-ripple-effect-farmers-supporting-farmers

SUMMARY:15 November: Chantal Lyons-The Return of Britain's Wild Boar @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Big\, messy and mysterious – crossing paths with a wild boar can conjure fear and joy in equal measure. Driven to extinction seven hundred years ago\, a combination of the species’ own tenacity and illegal releases from the 1980s has seen several populations of this beast of myth begin to roam English and Scottish woods once more. \nTheir habitat-regenerating actions may benefit a host of other wildlife; but unlike beavers\, these ecosystem engineers remain unloved by many. Why is there no clamour to reintroduce them across the land? And\, with the few boar in England threatened by poaching and culling\, why are we not doing more to prevent their re-extinction? \nChantal Lyons moved to the boar’s stronghold of the Forest of Dean to get up close and personal with this complex\, intelligent and quirky species. And she met with people across Britain and beyond who welcome them – or want them gone. From Toulouse and Barcelona where they are growing in number and boldness\, to the woods of Kent and Sussex where they are fading away again\, to Inverness-shire where re-wilders embrace their presence\, join Chantal as she reveals what it might take for us to coexist with wild boar. \n  \nChantal is a writer and naturalist\, with a background in social and environmental sciences. By day\, she is a science communicator at Mindfully Wired Communications. She previously worked for the Marine Stewardship Council. Chantal’s book Groundbreakers was sparked when she first went to the Forest of Dean in 2014 to interview local residents about their experiences of living with wild boar\, for what she thought would never become more than a Masters dissertation. But the story of this myth-like creature and its return to Britain took hold of her – and has never let go

SUMMARY:19 September: From Honey Bees to Dairy Cattle- Double Bill @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:Man has intervened in nature and his effect has been profound. Calstock Arts is proud to present two speakers looking at aspects of this – Michael Head and Dale Wood \nVet\, Michael (Spike) Head will look at: \n‘The Challenges and Solutions of Dairying in the ‘New World’ \nMichael will cover the changes in the dairy industry\, both local and global\, that have occurred through his career. With the environment and sustainability in mind references will be made to cow health\, medicine use and the management of the environment. The talk is sure to generate discussion. \nApiarist\, Dale Wood will speak on: \n‘Honey Bees…and Almost Everything Else’ \nHoney bees are amazing creatures. Their life cycle from egg to adult is a biological wonder. The evolution started when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. They came through several mass extinctions and they survive still despite the damage done to their habitat. This touches on many aspects of honeybee life\, and the struggles imposed on them\, often by us. \nMichael Head (aka Spike) qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994. He has a Certificate in Cattle Health and Production and a Diploma in Bovine Reproduction. Michael’s first job was in St Columb Major from where he moved to Somerset stayed until his return three years ago to support farmers both sides of the Tamar. He now works locally and nationally as a veterinary trainer. Michael has travelled extensively\, with a couple of short trips to Mozambique and Uganda training farmers and advisors in animal health and a project in Trinidad and Tobago where he investigated a tropical disease in humans and was a ‘doctor’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a keen birdwatcher. \nDale Wood is a retired teacher who started beekeeping on a whim just a few years before retirement. Once free from the shackles of a daytime job\, colony numbers grew rapidly and after 12 years of beekeeping\, numbers now are around the 25 to 30 mark. His eight apiaries are sited in the Upton Cross area of SE Cornwall. Dale is a trustee and council member of Cornwall Beekeeping Association\, he is the apiary  manager for Kit Hill beekeeping group and he runs weekly apiary sessions and a ‘”Beekeeping for Beginners” course. \n*Both speakers have most kindly agreed that all proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to funding the purchase of a new projector for the main hall at Calstock Arts. \n  \n
