SUMMARY:23 March- Tom McConville and Michael Biggins
DESCRIPTION:Tom McConville and Michael Biggins are amongst the best traditional musicians around today. Between them\, these virtuoso musicians have won BBC Musician of the Year prizes in both England and Scotland. \nTom‘s fiddle and Michael’s piano and accordion playing are amongst the finest there is – powerful and exciting with a range of songs performed in great style. They play a variety of music including Irish\, Scottish\, bluegrass and jazz\, all performed with a great sense of style\, verve and humour! \nThe sum of their talents\, combined with Tom’s rich singing\, is astounding and has left their audiences spellbound by their skill\, passion and rare sense of on-stage connection. Their sell-out concerts are highly entertaining\, so don’t miss your chance to see them here at Calstock. \n“One of the greatest violinists I’ve ever heard and by far the biggest influence in my music – A true master” – Seth Lakeman on Tom McConville \n“Two fantastic musicians and singers\, the best night we have had in a long time!” – Richmond Theatre Royal \n“The very best in our concert series” – Theatre by the Lake\, Keswick \n“Absolutely stunning playing and singing” – Helmseley Arts Centre \nAbout Tom McConville \nTom was born on Tyneside and brought up in a pub on the famous Scotswood Road with clientele drawn from the Irish and Scottish communities. This is where he first experienced traditional singing and fiddle music; the Hornpipes of James Hill amongst his first influences. 50 years on\, Tom McConville is widely acknowledged as THE authority on the music of James Hill and produced the first CD devoted entirely to Hill’s compositions. \nTom’s musical journey started in the North East folk clubs in the early 70s. Newcastle’s thriving Irish scene provided the opportunity\, with his first band\, to support Sean McGuire\, John Doonan\, The Fureys\, Boys of the Lough and even a lock-in with The Dubliners. Tom still credits the legendary Sean McGuire\, the fiddle genius from Belfast\, for teaching him his bowing techniques. \nTurning professional in 1974\, he joined Bob Fox in a duo then folk/rock band Magna Carta to play all over Europe. A memorable partnership with Kieron Halpin produced two award winning albums and top billing at The Cambridge Folk Festival. His next group Dab Hand made several visits to the USA where Tom met with another of his hero fiddlers\, Byron Berline. After a spell with Syncopace and a partnership with guitarist Chris Newman\, Tom spent the next 11 years recording & touring with Northumbrian piper Pauline Cato. \nEvery new venture brought great success and immense respect from his peers and public alike. Throughout his many collaborations he has continued his solo show at venues large and small. “A sandpaper-dry wit\, eye-watering skill on the fiddle\, great vocals… you just can’t help feeling that a performance by Tom is like visiting an old friend”  is how one folk club organiser describes him. \n2006 saw Tom working with Scots instrumentalist of the year\, Aaron Jones and All-Ireland Champion flute\, fiddle and whistle ace Claire Mann. Along with Kieran Boyle\, Peter Tickell\, Dave Wood & Kevin McGuire\, Tom completed a stunning solo CD\, Tommy on the Bridge. Musically brilliant\, it attracted great critical acclaim. Two more solo albums followed: Tommy on Song and Tommy on the Road. Tours with these albums played a major part in Tom being voted Musician of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \nRecently Tom has travelled extensively as a duo with David Newey and with three and four piece line ups featuring David\, Shona Kipling\, Phil Murray and Andy Watt. Renowned for his musical accompaniments\, Tom has also played on hundreds of albums\, working with the likes of Barbara Dickson\, Richard Thompson\, Allan Taylor and Lindisfarne. Whilst he has shared stages throughout the world with Stephan Grappelli\, Sean McGuire\, Mark O’Connor\, Paul Brady and The Chieftains\, Tom has never forgotten his roots and is as happy in the intimate atmosphere of a small folk club as he is at the largest festivals. Tom McConville is a world-class act! \nAbout Michael Biggins \nMichael is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Newcastle upon Tyne but now residing in Glasgow. He currently plays and tours with TRIP\, The Canny Band\, Tom McConville\, Northern Company and Irish Celtic – Spirit of Ireland Dance Show. \nMichael became BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year for 2021. \nMichael  graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow under the tutelage of Professor Sinae Lee on piano. Prior to this\, he studied at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied with Graham Caskie. Michael also studied with respected pianists Eileen Bown and Jean Armstrong\, who are based in Newcastle \nAs well as performing\, Michael also teaches piano\, piano accordion and music theory and has done for several years. \nListen to them here \n

I was probably not the only person to leave the venue in awe at having witnessed something very special” Fatea Magazine \n“Peter Knight and John Spiers are a very special duo. They are both master musicians\, each with a long and distinguished history\, but there’s a special chemistry when they get together. Ancient tunes are transformed by their ability to improvise and constantly surprise\, and no two performances are ever the same”  Robin Denselow \nOn a summer’s day in 2016\, the organisers of FolkEast Festival masterminded one of the most intriguing and exciting collaborations on today’s folk scene. DESCRIPTION:A labour of love on multiple levels\, My Darling Clementine – the sobriquet of spouses Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish – began as a homage to classic country duets of the 60’s and 70’s á la George & Tammy and Johnny & June. Their latest album is called “Country Darkness” – a collaboration with keyboard genius Steve Nieve (The Attractions / The Imposters)\, which sees them reinterpreting the country songs of Elvis Costello.  \nReleased in November 2020 it charted in both the UK and European Americana charts receiving unanimous praise along the way \nDuring the past 9 years they have played over 800 shows around the world\,  won numerous awards and have more than earned their own bona fides\, with their wry yet heart-on-sleeve song-craft spotlighting the vagaries of romance and the human condition\,  and their match-made-in-heaven harmonies \n “King and Dalgleish have earned their place in the role call of great country duettists” – UNCUT \n “MDC mix country gloom with excellent musicianship and very fine songs.” The Guardian \n “King and Dalgleish have re-invented the country duet” – The mingling of these two voices is just heavenly”  Mojo \n “One of the most exquisitely pained country albums of the year comes from England” New York Daily News \nTheir career started with the 2011 debut “How Do You Plead?”\, produced by Neil Brockbank (Nick Lowe)and featuring some of London’s finest musicians from the 70’s pub rock era. \nReleased in 2011\, it was immediately acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. Country Music People called it; “The greatest British country record ever made” \nSuch praise led to a US record deal and invitations to appear at the Americana Music Association in Nashville and SXSW in Austin in 2013 \nThe follow-up\, “The Reconciliation\,” produced by Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley) and featuring guest appearances from Kinky Freidman and The Brodsky Quartet only enhanced the bands growing reputation and received a similar critical response with the New York Daily News choosing it as ‘album of the month’ while Popmatters put it in their Top 10 Country Albums of 2013. \nTheir next move was a slight departure as they the collaborated with best selling crime writer\, and avowed country music fan\, Mark Billingham on the story and song project The Other Half. \nBillingham wrote a dark\, nourish tale of murder\, lust and revenge around eight of King & Dalgleish songs. The Other Half became an album\, an audio book\, and a stage show and featured contributions from actor David Morrisey and singer songwriter Graham Parker \nAfter 18 months of touring The Other Half\, including a run at The Edinburgh Festival  Michael and Lou returned to the studio for album no. 4. \nRe-uniting with producer Neil Brockbank\,  Still Testifying was released in the summer 2017. Stylistically\, it was a further shifting away from classic country to embrace gospel and country soul and was widely acclaimed with many writers praising the new direction; \n“Where gospel\, country and Southern soul happily collide. It’s terrific.” UnCut\,   ‘this more Delaney & Bonnie than George & Tammy’ Record Collector     \nListen to them here: https://youtu.be/yFP6X5FKUw4?si=UdGxqSnPBK49MAO1 \nCOMPETITION – all advance ticket holders included in a draw to win one of two copies of the ‘How Do You Plead?’ album. Competition to be drawn on the night of the performance

SUMMARY:19 January: Gallery Bar Special- Jazz Shed
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2022\, Jazz Shed is a 4-piece band based in the Looe area of Cornwall. They play a wide range of Jazz standards and lively Latin rhythms\, adding some of their own compositions into the mix – all guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get those toes tapping! They have performed at numerous venues throughout south east Cornwall\, including more recently the Old Library at Bodmin\, Polperro music festival and Looe Weekender festival\, gaining a loyal following as they go. \nBoth Helen and Judy are classically trained musicians and were Heads of Music at Looe Academy and Liskeard Community College respectively\, inspiring numerous generations of students to play music.  Having not seen each other for a while\, they met a few years ago when they had both decided to leave teaching and become freelance musicians. A chance meeting at a jazz gig ended up with them on stage together\, and an idea was born! \nAs well as playing double bass\, piano and flute\, Judy has built a reputation as a composer in a wide range of genres. Her orchestral piece ‘Eclipse’\, commissioned by the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra for the 1999 Total Eclipse\, will be performed again by the PSO at the Tavistock Festival in April. \nDuring the pandemic\,  Helen decided to pursue a long held dream of unravelling the mysteries of jazz. Making the most of lockdown\, she studied with Nora Germain (jazz violin) from Los Angeles\, Helen Porter (vocals) from Calstock\, Trudy Kerr (vocals) from London and Anita Wardell (vocals) from Perth\, Australia. As well as Jazz Shed\, she leads the Helen White Quartet. She is also a composer\, and is currently working on her first jazz album\, due to be recorded in early 2024. \nJethro just happens to live 3 doors down from Helen and made a similar decision as an already accomplished guitarist and bass player to follow the jazz trail! After impressing the ladies with his astonishing guitar playing he was invited to join the quartet. \nBunny\, the rhythm man of the quartet\, is well known in these parts as an experienced drummer and percussionist\, playing in various ensembles in and around Cornwall \n  \nJethro Pooley – Guitar \nBunny Warren- Cajon/Percussion \nJudy Whitlock – Vocals/Double Bass \nHelen White – Vocals/Soprano Saxophone/Violin

DESCRIPTION:Nationally acclaimed folk trio The Wilderness Yet have established a growing reputation for their detailed arrangements and flawless close–knit harmony singing. They are bringing their Festive / Mid Winter tour to the Old Chapel to cheer up our winter blues. \nThe trio combines the clear\, charismatic vocals of former BBC Young Folk Award finalist Rosie Hodgson with the fine\, sensitive fiddling of Rowan Piggott and the deft guitar and flute playing of Philippe Barnes. Independently\, they have earned audiences’ esteem as consummate musicians; together\, they weave an eclectic tapestry of traditional and original songs and tunes\, from a cappella three–part harmonies to luscious instrumentalarrangements. \nThe band’s eponymous debut album was released in 2020 to critical acclaim\, and was closely followed by John O Dreams\, an EP of commissioned covers. SUMMARY:8 December: Dale Storr Christmas Show
DESCRIPTION:What better way to kick-off the festive season than welcoming back one of Calstock Arts’ favourites. Described as “the piano man’s piano man” and “a national treasure” (Jazz Journal magazine)\, Dale’s musical journey has brought him recognition as the UK’s leading exponent of New Orleans-style boogie woogie and blues piano. Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster ride of the music and tales of the great New Orleans piano players\, inter-laced with some familiar Christmassy tunes given the New Orleans ‘treatment’. \nInspired by his parents’ collection of early Rhythm n’ Blues and Rock n’ Roll records\, the evocative music of New Orleans quickly became a passion for the young pianist\, immersing himself in the styles of such luminaries as Dr. John\, James Booker\, Professor Longhair and Fats Domino. Later\, while studying piano in Sheffield\, he established himself as a highly sought-after pianist backing many top blues stars from the U.K. and America. “A very\, very fine piano player indeed.” (Paul Jones\, musician & Radio 2 presenter). \n“Incredible\, never seen anybody play like that\, only James Booker.” \n(British Blues Legend – Victor Box) \nSince going solo in 2008 and presenting his now acclaimed ‘Sounds of New Orleans’ show\, Dale has wowed audiences across the UK and Europe\, mostly recently at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club\, with intoxicating piano mastery and vocals\, as well as sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of the ‘Crescent City’.  Dale draws in the audience with the rich history behind the music\, telling the often risqué stories of his beloved piano heroes. \n“If there is a better New Orleans-style pianist in the UK than the outrageously talented Dale Storr\, please point me in his or her direction because he or she must be very\, very special.” (Blues In Britain) \nHaven’t heard Dale play before? https://youtu.be/OW3st6887m0

SUMMARY:24 November: Angeline Morrison with support from Kezia Warwood
DESCRIPTION:Angeline Morrison is a singer\, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who explores traditional song with a deep love\, respect and curiosity. She is supported by Kezia Warwood. \nAngeline mostly makes music in the genres of wyrd folk and psych folk\, her work infused with elements of soul music\, literature\, ‘60s beat pop sounds\, folklore\, myth and the supernatural. In July 2022\, Angeline was announced as the fourth winner of the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize at Cambridge Folk Festival\, which generously supports the development of emerging talent in the folk genre. \nThe Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (released October 2022\, Topic Records) is a work of re-storying. The historic Black presence in the UK dates back to at least Roman times\, yet is often hidden\, forgotten or unacknowledged. \nThe populations of enslaved African people and their descendants in the USA have their bodies of folk song\, which are vitally important for containing histories\, expressing feelings\, giving voice and claiming presence… but the Black ancestors of the UK have no equivalent body of song. The Sorrow Songs begins to address this. \nIt is a gift to the forgotten Black ancestors of these islands\, and to the folk community here today. The album uses history and imagination to tell stories of UK Black ancestors in the sonic style of UK traditional and folk music \nAngeline’s debut for Topic Records\, it has been described as “a gift and landmark folk album\,” by Folkradio.co.uk. \n“Angeline Morrison paves the way and offers an authentic\, brave folk voice of black British experience. In doing so\, she presents us with a collection of songs that feel incredibly overdue. Long may they be sung out and loud.” – Tradfolk.co \nWatch her performance on Later with Jools Holland here: \nRead her Guardian interview here:

SUMMARY:22 October WARD KNUTUR TOWNES
DESCRIPTION:Ward Knutur Townes found their sound when the world fell silent. In 2020\, these three singer-songwriters\, (Lucy Ward\, Svavar Knutur and Adyn Townes) were selected to take part in a virtual global music sharing experiment called Global Music Match. Teamed up together\, they spent several lockdowns turning their stories into soft harmonies and intricate melodies. This year\, they cashed in their stagnant travel points and recorded their debut album in Iceland. It will be released in October 2023 and accompanied by an extensive UK tour.  \nThe album is an evocative and seamless blend of these three critically acclaimed artists signature styles; it is heartfelt and powerful\, with songs that take in the breadth of the human condition. It is an album that masterfully explores love\, mystery\, folklore and longing\, each track united by having great story telling at its heart. \nOn stage\, the rapport between Ward Knutur Townes is effervescent. Each one of them is skilled in holding an audience alone\, so there is an utter magic to watching their joyful\, authentic camaraderie unfold. Audiences are welcomed as friends and leave a WKT show having laughed and cried; feeling truly uplifted by their epic stage presence and\, undoubtedly\, moved by their music. \nLucy Ward (Derbyshire\, UK) is an acclaimed singer-songwriter and powerhouse performer with a unique ability to inhabit the heart of each song she sings. A BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner\, her songs are a mixture of evocative imagery\, quiet beauty\, passion\, protest and tradition all rolled into one. \nSvavar Knutur (Iceland) is a gentle but coarse and decadent troubadour. SUMMARY:21 October: Elizabeth-Jane Baldry
DESCRIPTION:“She is a great artist and consummate performer. She can draw more tone colours out of the instrument than any other harpist living in the world today.”  \n\nDavid Watkins\, Professor of Harp\, Guildhall School of Music\n\nElizabeth-Jane Baldry fell in love with the harp as a little girl whilst reading fairytales in which the harp possessed magical powers! She grew up to study at Exeter University and the Royal College of Music and has been a full-time professional musician for almost thirty years\, performing internationally. \nAs a recitalist\, she is well-known for her warm and approachable presentation style. The Bath Chronicle said of her: “It is hard to say just which was more pleasurable – the exquisite playing or the often deliciously outrageous stories of composers’ lives that Elizabeth Jane recounted in between the music.” \nShe is the only specialist silent movie harpist in the world\, playing live to cinema screenings of early film\, and has won multiple awards for her silent film accompaniments and compositions. Her uniquely rich tone on the harp has graced film and TV soundtracks screened in over thirty countries including America\, Canada\, Iceland\, Kenya\, Iran\, South Africa\, Poland and Cyprus. Her compositions have been used by ITV\, the BBC and by Irish\, Japanese\, Danish and Canadian film\, radio and television. \nA life-long lover of nature\, Elizabeth-Jane lives in the Dartmoor National Park where she is currently creating a little woodland theatre. She hopes it will become a magical place for people to gather together under the trees and share food\, friendship\, and art. \nListen to Elizabeth-Jane here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgcPT3ZR2JM

SUMMARY:7 October: Leveret - a collaboration of ANDY CUTTING • SAM SWEENEY • ROB HARBRON
DESCRIPTION:Leveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians.  Andy Cutting (button accordion)\, Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina) are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments.  Together their performances combine consummate musicianship\, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity. \nLeveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio rely on mutual trust and musical interaction to create new settings of their repertoire in the moment\, with no two performances alike. Their playing is relaxed and natural\, drawing audiences in and inviting them to share in music making that is truly spontaneous and yet deeply timeless. \nFiddler Sam Sweeney was the 2015 BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year and the inaugural Artistic Director of the National Youth Folk Ensemble.  He is known for his work in Bellowhead and The Full English\, and his solo recordings including 2022’s Escape That. \nBox player Andy Cutting\, a three-time BBC Folk Awards Musician of the year\, is a compelling solo performer and works with Blowzabella\, Topette\, Anne Niepold\, and Roger Daltrey. \nConcertina wizard Rob Harbron leads the English Acoustic Collective Summer School\, released his own solo album Meanders in 2019\, and is known for his work with Emily Portman\, The Full English and Emma Reid. \nLeveret will celebrate 10 years on the road in 2023 with Forms\, a new album featuring new and traditional tunes played with the band’s trademark interaction and inventiveness.  Leveret’s music is firmly rooted in the English tradition but sounds fresh and new and over the years their intimate presentation style has charmed countless audiences\, helping the trio build a loyal following and demonstrating the enduring appeal and endless potential of the folk tune.  Listeners new and old can expect incredible musicianship and compelling presentation from a band at the top of their game. \n“What was remarkable was the delicacy and quality of their playing and the empathy between the three men\, watching each other intently as they progressed from repeated melody lines to subtle\, spontaneous variations. It was a magical set.” Robin Denselow\, The Guardian **** \n“This is all about the joy of playing and the intoxicating thrill of three masters of their craft … the empathy between them as the music ebbs and flows is exceptional; you can also see the smiles and winks between them. The feel-good warmth they generate is palpable.” Colin Irwin\, fROOTS \n“Classy players … their intuitive way with tunes is glorious” Mojo \n“You won’t find English folk music played better than this” R2 \n“Inspiringly good” fRoots \n“In folk music you need to hear the human. Leveret have got that trance-like thing – I’ve taken people to Leveret concerts who don’t necessarily have an interest in folk and they’ve totally got it.  There’s so much in those tunes and it takes real skill to see it and bring it out.  There’s a variation there between the three of them that goes on constantly.  Even if you don’t appreciate what traditional music is you can still be blown away by it…”  Verity Sharp [BBC Radio 3 Late Junction] \n“The intimacy and the intensity of this in the round experience was unlike anything I had heard all year. In folk\, it’s the sound of what’s to come” TheArtsDesk.com \n“Music of a rich\, sinewy immersion\, guided by a mutual sense of exploration\, space and a very English kind of swing.  It’s an intimate\, contemporary reinvention of the source material” The Guardian \n“This glimmering set of instrumentals cuts unfailingly elegant lines” The Sunday Times

SUMMARY:6 October: Dave Manington’s Riff Raff
DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of a UK-wide tour\, we welcome back Dave Manington’s Riff Raff who last played here in 2018. Bassist and composer Dave Manington is one of the mainstays of the London contemporary music scene. He has played with many of the pre-eminent jazz musicians in the UK and Europe and with various ensembles from South America to the Balkans. In 2005 he co-founded the Loop Collective to pool creative resources with other like-minded musicians and is a founder member of the highly acclaimed Yazz Ahmed Quartet and Tori Freestone’s Solstice. In 2022 he was nominated for an Ivor Novello award for best jazz composition. \n“[the music] grooves like hell with some thick mercurial riffs\, full of stops\, starts and turns yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum.” \nJAZZWISE \nDave Manington’s Riff Raff is his main ongoing project. This London-based super group is a dynamic ensemble of amongst the most creative musicians working in contemporary jazz\, featuring: softly surefooted vocalist Brigitte Beraha\, award-winning pianist Ivo Neame\,  the articulate Tomas Challenger on tenor\, John Scofield-like guitarist Rob Updegraff and cutting-edge  drummer Tim Giles. Their music is intimate and creative\, with a delicate interplay forged from many years performing together. Compositionally\, the music draws on a wide range of styles with traditional folk\, electronica and contemporary classical influences added to the mix with complex jazz harmonies and syncopated rhythms to create a soundscape that is quirky but engaging\, individualistic\, distinctly contemporary but always accessible. Several of their compositions feature lyrics from Brigitte\, while in others she sings wordless vocals\, often harmonizing with the sax line to great effect. \n“Riff Raff mix the leader’s clever composing with a formidable lineup\,…the soundscape embraces a 21st century sax-led cool school sound\, raw guitar-fusion\, diffident Wayne Shorteresque lyricism\, and vocals that showcase Beraha’s eloquent lyrics and inventiveness as a wordless improviser.” \nThe Guardian \nListen to music from their critically acclaimed 3rd album ‘Deep Challenger’: \nhttps://davemanington.bandcamp.com/track/free-spirit \nhttps://youtu.be/tNo43ZKbCjA \n

SUMMARY:Postponed until 2024 - 22 September: Banter
DESCRIPTION:Apologies but this event is postponed until next year. If you would like a refund on your tickets\, plse contact We Got Tickets. Otherwise they will advise you of the new date in due course. \n  \nBanter are Nina Zella\, Simon Care\, Tim Walker and Mark Jolley. Four fine musicians whose roots are firmly in the traditional English genre\, but who enjoy stretching the limits – in what a lot of people refer to as ‘the quirky Banter twist”.  Formed in 2015\, due to a happy accident\, they immediately realised their common love for traditional English song and dance and began to mess around with it. \nThey gained popularity\, or should it be notoriety\, very quickly and were soon performing at many of the country’s largest festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Cambridge FF\, Sidmouth FF and Towersey. \nWith the release of two albums\, YES and DARE\, between 2017 and 2019\, they received more plaudits in the music press including a Valentines day session on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 Folk Show. \nNow firmly established as one of the UK’s finest bands they have recorded their third studio album “Three”. Their first album of traditional material ….. but with that “twist” \nDescribed as “the world’s smallest big band”\, Banter go from strength to strength. \nwww.banter.com \nListen to them here
