This Concert begins with ANTHEM. \nThese remarkable songs – stripped back\, honest\, naked and sensual. \nEnigmatic\, mysterious and sub textural\, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character\, with an exact sense of prose\, wry humour and the courage to wrestle with the unspoken\, forgiving human frailty and indulgence with the stroke of each word. \nThe chilling announcement of Leonard’s death marked the end of an era. His music befriended an entire generation. Within every line of his writing\, he has been challenging us to listen more carefully\, speak more thoughtfully\, think more deeply and recognize our own vulnerability. Our World misses him very much. \nWith a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable\, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Songs of murder\, betrayal\, gambling\, liquor and redemption.  \nAfter self releasing their debut album\, the band signed to one of the UK’s top independent  Jazz labels\, recording 3 albums as part of the ‘Vintage Recording Project’ – essentially recording live around ribbon microphones\, as it would have been back in the 1930’s. DESCRIPTION:Cornwall-based chamber choir\, Levowan XII was established in 2015 by Director\, Marcus Alleyne. Originally eight voices put together to perform a live carol concert for local radio\, they are now 12\, all of whom have a strong musical background and bring a broad range of experience and versatility. \nThe choir performs three main concerts per year and also collaborates with other music ensembles at a variety of events in Devon and Cornwall.  Delivering a vast repertoire covering almost any genre\, including major works\, they perform both a cappella and accompanied by piano\, organ or chamber orchestra. \nTheir Spring Concert 2024 will feature Fauré’s Requiem and will also include a selection of individual pieces from the classical and musical theatre repertoire\, based on a theme of contemplation and reflection by\, amongst others\, Allegri\, Elgar\, Sondheim\, Joni Mitchell\, Billy Joel\, and Kate Rusby. \nMark Smith\nAccompanist- studied piano and organ at Trinity College of Music\, London\, and worked as a professional accompanist in the South East before moving to Cornwall 12 years ago. This is where he first experienced traditional singing and fiddle music; the Hornpipes of James Hill amongst his first influences. 50 years on\, Tom McConville is widely acknowledged as THE authority on the music of James Hill and produced the first CD devoted entirely to Hill’s compositions. \nTom’s musical journey started in the North East folk clubs in the early 70s. Newcastle’s thriving Irish scene provided the opportunity\, with his first band\, to support Sean McGuire\, John Doonan\, The Fureys\, Boys of the Lough and even a lock-in with The Dubliners. Tom still credits the legendary Sean McGuire\, the fiddle genius from Belfast\, for teaching him his bowing techniques. \nTurning professional in 1974\, he joined Bob Fox in a duo then folk/rock band Magna Carta to play all over Europe. A memorable partnership with Kieron Halpin produced two award winning albums and top billing at The Cambridge Folk Festival. His next group Dab Hand made several visits to the USA where Tom met with another of his hero fiddlers\, Byron Berline. After a spell with Syncopace and a partnership with guitarist Chris Newman\, Tom spent the next 11 years recording & touring with Northumbrian piper Pauline Cato. \nEvery new venture brought great success and immense respect from his peers and public alike. Throughout his many collaborations he has continued his solo show at venues large and small. “A sandpaper-dry wit\, eye-watering skill on the fiddle\, great vocals… you just can’t help feeling that a performance by Tom is like visiting an old friend”  is how one folk club organiser describes him. \n2006 saw Tom working with Scots instrumentalist of the year\, Aaron Jones and All-Ireland Champion flute\, fiddle and whistle ace Claire Mann. Along with Kieran Boyle\, Peter Tickell\, Dave Wood & Kevin McGuire\, Tom completed a stunning solo CD\, Tommy on the Bridge. Musically brilliant\, it attracted great critical acclaim. Tom McConville is a world-class act! \nAbout Michael Biggins \nMichael is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Newcastle upon Tyne but now residing in Glasgow. He currently plays and tours with TRIP\, The Canny Band\, Tom McConville\, Northern Company and Irish Celtic – Spirit of Ireland Dance Show. \nMichael became BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year for 2021. \nMichael  graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow under the tutelage of Professor Sinae Lee on piano. DESCRIPTION:Born in South America and raised in Sweden\, Annika Skoogh is a highly versatile and celebrated multilingual jazz vocalist with a natural talent\, who is based in Exeter and brings a special blend of Scandinavian charm and Latin flavour to her performances.  \nIn 2017\, Annika recorded her first album\, Waters of March with her quartet (featuring Matt Carter\, Al Swainger and a Coach York) which was released the following year 2018 to much acclaim.  \nIn 2019\, she appeared at BBC Spotlight as part of the Fowey Literature and Art Festival and has performed alongside world-class musicians including Buster Cooper and Art Barton (Buddy Rich\, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen) former members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the late legendary Kathy Stobart (Art Pepper and Humphrey Lyttelton). In 2021\, Annika released her second album with her Brazilian Latin band Orpheus which has been very well received.  \nAnnika leads several ensembles with many sold out performances under her belt and over the years\, she has played at some of the biggest UK jazz festivals including Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, The London International Duke Ellington Festival\, The Marlborough International Jazz Festival and the Bristol Harbour Festival.  \nShe has put together a fine stellar band with some of the very best musicians here in the South West and will be joined by Tom Ball – pianist\, Kevin Saunders – double bass and Gary Evans – drums.  \nJoin them in their celebration to the great American Songbook where Annika takes a look at some of her absolute favourite jazz standards written by legendary musicians and composers. DESCRIPTION:The Primrose Piano Quartet was formed in 2004 by four renowned chamber musicians and is named after the violinist\, William Primrose. The group’s acclaimed discography includes favourites such as works by Fauré\, Brahms\, Elgar\, Strauss and Schubert as well British repertoire featuring neglected masterpieces of the 19th and 20th century and major commissions from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Anthony Payne (premièred at the Cheltenham Festival and at King’s Place London). \nTheir double CD of the complete Brahms piano quartets on period pianos was the culmination of years of research into Historically Informed Performance Practice and has been hailed by critics as “revelatory”. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nIt’s difficult to find a musical genre that would fully describe The Countrymen\, but Folk Rock Harmony comes close. \nA five-piece band featuring tight four-part vocal harmony and strong instrumentation. Primarily performing original songs and their own arrangements of lesser-known contemporary folk\, the band’s lyrical inspiration is drawn from life in Cornwall\, the demise of local industries and other rural issues that resonate throughout the country. DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2014 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, The Barbican Quartet is currently a part of the Quatuor Ébène String Quartet Academy at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München\, where they are also mentored by Eberhard Feltz. They studied with Günter Pichler at the Escuela de Musica Reina Sofia Madrid between 2017-2023. Other notable influences include Ferenc Rados\, Andras Keller\, Oliver Wille\, David Watkin\, Krzysztof Chorzelski and David Waterman. \nIn 2022\, the quartet won the First Prize at the 71st ARD International String Quartet Competition\, where they were also awarded the special prize for Best Interpretation of the commissioned work by Dobrinka Tabakova\, the Genuin Classics prize\, the GEWA prize and the Henle Urtext prize. They were also First Prize winners at the 2019 Joseph Joachim International Chamber Music Competition\, prizewinners at the Vibre! Quatuors a Bordeaux\, and have also received awards from the Hattori Foundation\, Musicians Company UK and the Royal Philharmonic Society. The Barbican Quartet has appeared in such festivals as the Montreal Chamber Music Festival\, the Peasmarsh Festival\, Vibre! Quatuors à Bordeaux\, Zeister Muziekdagen\, IMS Prussia Cove and Aldeburgh\, and have enjoyed collaborating with Quatuor Ébène\, James Ehnes\, Nicolas Baldeyrou\, Richard Lester\, Anthony Marwood and Andrew Marriner. Their performances have been broadcast on BR Klassik Radio\, NPO Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3. \nCurrently based between London and Munich\, the quartet is enjoying a dynamic concert schedule.The 2022/2023 season is an exciting time for the Barbican Quartet\, who will be recording and releasing their debut CD for Genuin Classics\, and touring in Germany\, France\, Holland\, the UK\, Switzerland\, Italy\, Canada and the USA. DESCRIPTION:If you have ever watched Jools Holland seeing in the New Year on BBC2\, right at the front of the band is Derek Nash on alto sax. He is one of the UK’s top players and is joining another in South West\, tenor sax star Martin Dale and his Quartet. \nDerek’s long relationship with Martin started with Be Bop star John Burch’s Kentish Octet\, where they performed\, toured and recorded together many times.  Their swinging bravado\, showmanship and humour join together for a superb evening of Jazz standards in a style that remembers great sparring Saxophone heroes like Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes\, or Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. \nDerek is a full time member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 2004\, has led Sax Appeal for over forty years\, leads his award winning Acoustic Quartet\, fronts the funk/fusion band Protect the Beat\, the Latin band Picante\, the “The Wonder of Stevie” show and is a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion. He studied jazz saxophone at the Guildhall school of music during his time in the service. He has played with most of the UK’s leading jazz musicians and toured with the Jack Bruce Blues Band. He plays in the style of his 3 favourite tenors\, Hayes\, Scott and his close friend Dick Morris set. \nGavin Martin has been MDQ’s regular piano player for quite a few years now\, he also had  full career in the band Service playing trumpet and piano. Also eager to learn more tunes he has become an accomplished jazz player and great accompanist. He plays with a few West Country bands and also teaches music in a local academy. \nKevin Sanders is a long standing member of the quartet and is one of the most in demand bass players in the S.West. He has a wealth of knowledge\, and you can rarely catch him out when you “call a tune “. A fine player and he also writes for a very popular Bass magazine. \nDennis Harris is the longest serving member of the quartet\, he has been with the band since the very beginning and still “swings like the clappers “; not too busy just a good old “proper groover”\, which suits the MDQ perfectly.

With no space to be found in the marquee\, people stood five deep in the pouring rain in order to witness the bringing together of two of the most genuinely gifted musicians in their respective fields. \nWith a standing ovation and roars for more\, and much to the delight of folk fans everywhere\, Knight and Spiers decided not to leave things there. \nThe pairing of violin and melodeon is not a new one\, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers\, Improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history\, but also something that should inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk dancing heritage\, and the beautiful\, mysterious tunes that can be found within that heritage. \nThese uniquely gifted musicians make a sublime pairing\, and create a live performance to be remembered for a long time. \nThis tour heralds the launch of their long awaited second studio album\, Both in a Tune. \n

DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Co-operative Big Band who are returning to the Old Chapel after an excellent performance last year. \nFormed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils  by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing at as a fund raiser for Calstock Arts. \nThe Cooperative Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. Country Music People called it; “The greatest British country record ever made” \nSuch praise led to a US record deal and invitations to appear at the Americana Music Association in Nashville and SXSW in Austin in 2013 \nThe follow-up\, “The Reconciliation\,” produced by Colin Elliot (Richard Hawley) and featuring guest appearances from Kinky Freidman and The Brodsky Quartet only enhanced the bands growing reputation and received a similar critical response with the New York Daily News choosing it as ‘album of the month’ while Popmatters put it in their Top 10 Country Albums of 2013. \nTheir next move was a slight departure as they the collaborated with best selling crime writer\, and avowed country music fan\, Mark Billingham on the story and song project The Other Half. \nBillingham wrote a dark\, nourish tale of murder\, lust and revenge around eight of King & Dalgleish songs. DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome back the Blue Dukes. The four veterans of the SW Music scene are back in their 4-piece band playing Blues and Roots music. \nThe band consists of – \nJeff “the Horse” Horsey      Harmonica\,Guitar and Vocals \nGareth Hedges                     Guitar and Vocals \nGeorge Nixs                          Lead Guitar and Vocals \nColin Boyd                            Bass Guitar and Vocals. \nGareth Hedges has played and recorded in the UK\, America\, Europe and even Australia. He is a wonderful guitar picker and has a lived in\, authentic vocal style\, having learnt first-hand from artists like Bill Munroe\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan\, all of whom he has spent time with. \nGeorge Nixs is a flamboyant\, virtuoso lead guitar player and his playing lights up a lot of the material the band do. He used to do session work at Abbey Road Studios and counted Peter Green\, Eric Clapton and the Hollies among his musical friends. He played with future AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson\, in a band called Geordie in the 1970s. \nColin Boyd is well known locally as one of the best Bass players around and has a distinctive style all his own. In the past he has famously worked with the Kinks and Lou Reed! \nJeff Horsey played in Exeter based band Junkyard Angels and toured widely\, backing Louisiana Legend Tabby Thomas and playing alongside artists as diverse as Geno Washington\, Peter Green and even Screaming Lord Sutch. He gets to concentrate on his singing and Harmonica playing but also plays some Slide Guitar. \nTogether they perform funky versions of well-known blues covers\, lesser known songs you wished you had heard before and a few original numbers\, all blending into an exciting\, highly listenable gumbo with lots of harmony singing giving them a special edge. DESCRIPTION:The internationally acclaimed violinist Philippa Mo makes her first visit to Calstock. Philippa studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She now performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, the Ankara International Music festival and the Lincoln Center\, New York. Recent solo tours have taken her as far afield as Australia\, Brazil and China. In 2020\, Philippa won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokofiev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. SUMMARY:19 January: Gallery Bar Special- Jazz Shed
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2022\, Jazz Shed is a 4-piece band based in the Looe area of Cornwall. They play a wide range of Jazz standards and lively Latin rhythms\, adding some of their own compositions into the mix – all guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get those toes tapping! They have performed at numerous venues throughout south east Cornwall\, including more recently the Old Library at Bodmin\, Polperro music festival and Looe Weekender festival\, gaining a loyal following as they go. \nBoth Helen and Judy are classically trained musicians and were Heads of Music at Looe Academy and Liskeard Community College respectively\, inspiring numerous generations of students to play music.  Having not seen each other for a while\, they met a few years ago when they had both decided to leave teaching and become freelance musicians. A chance meeting at a jazz gig ended up with them on stage together\, and an idea was born! \nAs well as playing double bass\, piano and flute\, Judy has built a reputation as a composer in a wide range of genres. Her orchestral piece ‘Eclipse’\, commissioned by the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra for the 1999 Total Eclipse\, will be performed again by the PSO at the Tavistock Festival in April. \nDuring the pandemic\,  Helen decided to pursue a long held dream of unravelling the mysteries of jazz. Making the most of lockdown\, she studied with Nora Germain (jazz violin) from Los Angeles\, Helen Porter (vocals) from Calstock\, Trudy Kerr (vocals) from London and Anita Wardell (vocals) from Perth\, Australia. As well as Jazz Shed\, she leads the Helen White Quartet. She is also a composer\, and is currently working on her first jazz album\, due to be recorded in early 2024. \nJethro just happens to live 3 doors down from Helen and made a similar decision as an already accomplished guitarist and bass player to follow the jazz trail! After impressing the ladies with his astonishing guitar playing he was invited to join the quartet. \nBunny\, the rhythm man of the quartet\, is well known in these parts as an experienced drummer and percussionist\, playing in various ensembles in and around Cornwall \n  \nJethro Pooley – Guitar \nBunny Warren- Cajon/Percussion \nJudy Whitlock – Vocals/Double Bass \nHelen White – Vocals/Soprano Saxophone/Violin

DESCRIPTION:Angeline Morrison is a singer\, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who explores traditional song with a deep love\, respect and curiosity. She is supported by Kezia Warwood. \nAngeline mostly makes music in the genres of wyrd folk and psych folk\, her work infused with elements of soul music\, literature\, ‘60s beat pop sounds\, folklore\, myth and the supernatural. In July 2022\, Angeline was announced as the fourth winner of the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize at Cambridge Folk Festival\, which generously supports the development of emerging talent in the folk genre. \nThe Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience (released October 2022\, Topic Records) is a work of re-storying. The historic Black presence in the UK dates back to at least Roman times\, yet is often hidden\, forgotten or unacknowledged. \nThe populations of enslaved African people and their descendants in the USA have their bodies of folk song\, which are vitally important for containing histories\, expressing feelings\, giving voice and claiming presence… but the Black ancestors of the UK have no equivalent body of song. The Sorrow Songs begins to address this. \nIt is a gift to the forgotten Black ancestors of these islands\, and to the folk community here today. The album uses history and imagination to tell stories of UK Black ancestors in the sonic style of UK traditional and folk music \nAngeline’s debut for Topic Records\, it has been described as “a gift and landmark folk album\,” by Folkradio.co.uk. \n“Angeline Morrison paves the way and offers an authentic\, brave folk voice of black British experience.
