SUMMARY:8 February: SOLD OUT Budapest Cafe Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Refreshingly unconventional and snappily attired boutique orchestra BCO play gypsy and folk-flavoured music in their unique and surprising way. From Balkan and Russian traditional music to their artful distillations of Romantic masterworks to soaring Gaelic folk anthems\, BCO is an infectious musical experience like none other. \nFifteen albums to their name\, Budapest Café Orchestra was established by British composer and violinist Christian Garrick in 2009. A diminutive ensemble of just four players\, the BCO creates an astonishing soundscape and aural alchemy characteristic of larger ensembles\, combining violin\, guitar\, accordion\, double bass\, saz\, balalaika\, domra and percussion to dazzling effect. \nEvoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros\, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires –  plus a few surprises along the way –  hugely entertaining\, immense skill\, profound musicianship. A show by the BCO is enough to make you want to book that holiday down the Danube! \nTwo of the country’s celebrated international soloists revel at the heart of proceedings. Accordionist exemplar Eddie Hession is a supreme accordion champion of Great Britain. In his illustrious career he has accompanied Luciano Pavarotti\, Placido Domingo\, Jose Carreras and Chris Rea.  Christian Garrick is one of the world’s most celebrated jazz violinists. He has played music with Dame Cleo Laine & Sir John Dankworth\, Wynton Marsalis\, Nigel Kennedy\, Bireli Lagrene\, Tim Minchin\, Caro Emerald and John Etheridge. One of Russia’s most enigmatic musical exports\, The Sultan (sic Adrian Zolotuhin) is a master of the strummed strings of domra\, balalaika\, guitar and saz.  Veteran bass-man Kelly Cantlon has been in the business of laying down the low notes for many-a-moon.  Kelly first found fame in the as a Vagabond with Northern Soul sensations Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. \n

SUMMARY:31 January: POSTPONED due to illness - Kerdroya\, the Cornish Hedge with music from the Dalla Duo @ 1930
DESCRIPTION:We have had to postpone Kerdroya due to illness and hope to reschedule for mid March. All ticket holders will be contacted about the new date within 48 hours (30/1) \nKerdroya\, the Cornish Landscape Labyrinth\, is a work of Slow Art. \nThe Classical Labyrinth icon is a 4\,000-year-old visual symbol found across the proto-Celtic world and beyond\, inviting the pilgrim along its meditative pathway. \nCornish Hedges are the oldest structures on the planet still in use for their original function\, an ecologically benevolent craft handed down aurally through countless generations. \nIn the middle of Bodmin Moor\, Kerdroya entwines these two ancient cultural phenomena and launches them into the future as a beacon of hope for those yet to come. \nBegin the evening with live Cornish music from ‘Dalla Duo’ who created the gorgeous soundtrack for the film. \nFinish the evening with a Q&A session with Will Coleman (Artistic Director)\, Gemma Gilbert (Filmmaker) and Leighton Paull (Cornish Hedger). \nWatch a trailer for the film here

SUMMARY:24 January: Yvette Andrewartha: The Unexpected Serendipitous Gig - with Helen White & Mojito (Fund raiser for CA)
DESCRIPTION:Yvette Andrewartha presents The Unexpected Serendipitous Gig\, very kindly fund raising for Calstock Arts. \nShe explains below why she has called this The Unexpected Serendipitous Gig! \n‘Because the words ‘unexpected’ and ‘serendipitous’ have come to mind so many times during my on-going journey to becoming a jazz singer. ‘Unexpected’ because singing wasn’t a planned ‘thing’ and ‘serendipitous’ because people and opportunities have arrived at just the right moment to help. So I am going with the flow and enjoying every minute……….. \nThere are so many wonderful songs in the jazz genre and I am looking forward to sharing some of these with you in an evening of jazz standards. I have the wonderful Mojito Jazz Trio to accompany me and I am also joined by the lovely Helen White who will sing and play violin and sax. They are all great musicians who appear regularly in venues around Devon and Cornwall and I am thrilled to be sharing a stage with them. \nWe are looking forward to the gig and it will be an evening of fun and joy. And all in a good cause as there will be a bucket where all donations will go to the lovely Calstock Arts. It will be a good way to kick off the January blues and enjoy some great tunes.’ \nWe look forward to seeing you there

SUMMARY:19 January: Philippa Mo - ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ @ 3.30
DESCRIPTION:After a highly successful solo concert in January 2024\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the virtuosa violinist\, Philippa Mo. \nBetween January and November 2025\, Philippa will be playing a series of concerts ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be highlighted\, tracing his progression as a composer from his earliest compositions written for solo violin to his later works. \nWe are very fortunate that Philippa will be playing the first and final concerts of the series at Calstock Arts. \nFurther information about the other concerts\, all of which will be performed at other venues in the south-west\, will be publicised at a later date. \nTickets can be purchased for either CA concert individually or for both concerts at a reduced price (see below for details). \nPhilippa studied at the royal Academy of Music\, London and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, recitals at the Henry Moore Institute\, Leeds\, the Centre for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, the Deutsches Museum\, Munich\, and further afield at the Ankara International Music Festival\, the Lincoln Center\, New York and Ulaan Bataar\, Mongolia. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokoviev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. \nPhilippa was appointed Senior Lecture in Violin at Leeds Conservatoire and was awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015. In 2020\, she won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nIn the January concert\, Philippa will present some of the most expressive and colourful music written for single violin. To counter the dark and cold of January we will hear Bach’s Partita in E major shot through with sunlight\, balanced by his most famous and joyous first cello suite. There are elements of folk music in works by two British women composers Sally Beamish and Wendy Hiscocks and an exotic glimpse into the Brazilian rainforest in the piece ‘Pernambuco’ by Nigel Clarke. The eerie ‘Written in Sand’ by Icelandic composer Haflidi Hallgrimsson explores yet another sound world – and the muscular and virtuosic sonata by Prokofiev brings the journey to a close. \nProgramme \nTelemann Fantasia no.6 in E minor\nBach Partita in E major BWV\nHiscocks Caprice\nBeamish The Wise Maid\nClarke Pernambuco \nInterval \nTelemann Fantasia no.10 in D major\nBach Cello Suite no.1 in G major BWV 1007 arr. for violin\nHaflidi Hallgrimsson Written in Sand \nProkofiev Sonata for Solo Violin in D major Op.115 \nListen to Philippa here & here

SUMMARY:18 January: Sarah McQuaid
DESCRIPTION:Sarah McQuaid’s lush\, chocolatey voice combines with her engaging personality\, “subtle mastery onstage” (Huffington Post) and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars\, piano and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience.  \nBorn in Spain\, raised in Chicago\, holding dual Irish and American citizenship and now settled in rural England\, she brings the eclecticism of her background to her “captivating\, unorthodox songwriting” (PopMatters) and choice of material\, spanning genres and defying categorisation.  \nAll this is abundantly demonstrated by her new live album and video series The St Buryan Sessions — but needs to be savoured in person to be fully appreciated. \n“One of the most instantly recognisable voices in current music.” —Trust The Doc \nsarahmcquaid.com \nfacebook.com/sarahmcquaidmusic \ntwitter.com/sarahmcquaid \nyoutube.com/sarahmcquaid \ninstagram.com/sarahmcquaidmusic

SUMMARY:6 December: Janice Burns & Jon Doran
DESCRIPTION:Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an award-winning Anglo-Scottish duo who came together after discovering a shared love of traditional music. Their songs tell vivid stories about the nature of life and our place in the world. \nJanice & Jon’s ‘clever and uncluttered musical storytelling’ (Songlines) comes alive through tight vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin\, bouzouki and guitar. Their arrangements have a spellbinding presence and an understated energy that transports songs from the pages of books and manuscripts into the imagination of the listener. \nFollowing the success of their self-titled EP in 2020\, Janice & Jon released their debut album\, No More the Green Hills\, in Autumn 2022. The album had overwhelmingly positive feedback\, finding its place in the Official UK Folk Albums Chart\, as well as gaining airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Scotland.  \nWith their relaxed and personable approach to performance\, Janice & Jon are renowned for the warmth of their connection with audiences. From opening Stage 2 at Cambridge Folk Festival\, to playing at the likes of Celtic Connections\, Edinburgh Tradfest and Cecil Sharp House\, the duo are highly sought after across the UK and beyond. \nThe duo’s winter gigs have become something of a tradition over the last few years\, and this year they’re heading out on their first festive tour. Expect seasonal favourites and little-known gems to warm the soul through the colder months. \nQUOTES \n**** “Clever and uncluttered musical storytelling” – Songlines Magazine \n***** “Five stars for this duo that have made an album destined for repeated listening.” – Irish Music Magazine \n“They’re a revelation – crystal clear voices\, great musicianship and an obvious deep love of the tradition.” – Mike Harding \n“Really nicely done” – Mark Radcliffe\, BBC Radio 2 Folk Show \n“They play lovely strings\, they have gorgeous harmony arrangements. Really well crafted\, \nintimate\, beautifully understated.” – Karine Polwart \nListen to them here \nhttps://www.janandjon.com \nhttps://www.facebook.com/janandjon \nhttps://x.com/JaniceandJon1 \nhttps://www.instagram.com/janandjonmusic/ \nhttps://www.youtube.com/@janiceandjon7003 \n

SUMMARY:1 December: Goblin Band & Craven
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to introduce a double bill of folk; Goblin Band and Craven. \nGoblin Band formed from sessions of the same name run out of the HobGoblin Music shop in central London\, organised by a collection of young queer folk obsessive friends and shop employees looking to forge their own way into folk music. \nThis gave rise to a band of multi-instrumentalists firmly rooted in the folk music of Britain\, interpreted via the socialist tradition concerned with folk’s relationship to the history of the working classes\, capitalism\, and colonialism. \nThrough a fusion of harmony singing\, fiddle\, squeezebox\, hurdy gurdy\, recorders and more\, Goblin Band deliver a charismatic alternative expression of English traditional culture in a way which is at once riotously joyful and deeply sincere. \n“They can play and they can sing and they’re fearless…When I saw Goblin Band singing recently\, I just thought\, “Why didn’t I think of that?” \n– MARTIN CARTHY \nBristol/Stroud based Folk band Craven perform traditional ballads with crafted arrangements. Their genre bending soundworld takes influence from punk\, electronic dance and classical chamber music. \nApproaching the heavy themes of traditional folk – life\, death\, war and poverty – with irony and wry wit\, and finding queer and contemporary ideas in old songs\, and bringing out new meanings for new contexts. \nTheir debut release\, “Baby Vs Crow” exemplifies this tongue in cheek attitude. A mixtape consisting of 6 traditional folk songs\, it showcases their breadth of sound from the bright\, punk-lead “Arthur McBride”\, to the darker “Crow on the Cradle” with synth-like arpeggiation. \nCraven is composed of Will Bremner (Melodeon/Concertina)\, Elian Moisey (Double Bass/Viola da Gamba)\, and Rhiannon Takel (Fiddle/Mandola).

SUMMARY:24 October: Miranda Sykes\, Jim Causley and John Palmer - The Sabine Baring-Gould Project
DESCRIPTION:JIM CAUSLEY AND MIRANDA SYKES PRESENT GHOSTS\, WEREWOLVES AND COUNTRYFOLK – THE SONGS AND STORIES OF SABINE BARING-GOULD \nSix-time BBC Folk Awards nominee Jim Causley and Miranda Sykes of Award-Winning Show of Hands and Daphne’s Flight come together for the first time to celebrate the centenary of a Victorian superstar through his music and stories. \nSabine Baring-Gould inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula\, Sherlock Holme’s Hound and Bernard Shaw’s Doolittle. He brought Ghostly Aunt Eliza\, wretched heroine Mehalah and Norse hero Grettir to life. He mentored folk song collector Cecil Sharp – and wrote Onward Christian Soldiers \nHe was a giant of his time. He was a top ten best-selling novelist; the writer of what is still the go-to book on werewolves; author of a nerve-tingling book of ghost stories; storyteller of the Norse Myths of Iceland; compiler of a classic Dartmoor history book and composer of numerous popular hymns. \nBut he says the most important thing he did in his life was to collect songs from the countryfolk of Devon and Cornwall. A pioneer collector\, starting a decade before Sharp and Vaughan Williams\, he amassed more than 2000 songs. \nMiranda\, Jim and narrator John Palmer\, director of the critically-acclaimed Vaughan Williams anniversary “From Pub to Pulpit” Cathedral tour\, interweave some of those songs with anecdotes from his own astonishing life and stories from his impressive array of books. \nThis tribute aims to make audiences smile\, gasp and sing along as they hear how:\n\nA ragamuffin fiddler’s favourite tune lived on in his instrument after he died (Bold General Wolfe) \nA cottage was built in a day on the moor for a penniless newly married couple (Cottage Well Thatched With Straw) \nThe eerie mysteries of Wil O’ The Wisp and his graveyard trips (The Blue Flame) \nBram Stoker took ideas from Sabine for Dracula  \nAnd ….. How Sabine became Sherlock Holmes’s God Father.\n\nBaring Gould was born in Exeter on 28 January 1834 and died in January 1924\, the son of the Lord of the Manor of Lew Trenchard near Okehampton. He was at school in Warwick and a schoolteacher in Sussex. He then became a vicar in Yorkshire\, Essex and Devon and devoted his time to his love of folk music\, country traditions and the macabre… \nJim has been a long-term admirer of Baring-Gould and includes many of his songs in his popular shows based on songs of Dartmoor.  \n“It’s fascinating to see how many songs he collected found their way into his Dartmoor books.  It’s also quite eerie to see how many other songs fit the mood of his books on ghosts\, werewolves\, myths and his classic Gothic novels”\, he said. \nMiranda added: “We’re really excited about having found a unique and enjoyable way of bringing all of his work together in a show which we think will engage audiences and leave them fascinated and entertained.” \nJohn Palmer said: “It’s surprising that someone who was such a prominent public figure in his day has almost disappeared today. We hope that this show will introduce many more people to Sabine and restore some of the credit he deserves”.

SUMMARY:13 September: Stevens & Pound
DESCRIPTION:BBC Radio 3’s award-winning Delia Stevens and three time BBC Radio 2 Folk Musician of the Year nominee\, Will Pound\, deliver an unprecedented collaboration\, following the creative evolution of the classical composers inspired by folk. Driven by a maverick curiosity\, having stumbled upon a completely new world of sound\, they combine the traditional instruments of Pound’s melodeon and harmonica with the dizzying array of Stevens’ percussion\, and then let their imaginations run riot whilst paying homage to their respective musical roots.  \n  \nBoth at the forefront of their generation in their respective genres\, both musicians are renowned for innovation and collaboration:  \n  \n“percussion from Delia Stevens\, whose thoughtful\, insistent playing is crucial” \nThe Guardian \n  \nStevens’ work ranges from reimagining Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with percussion for Sky Arts\, presenting her own BBC Radio 3 series “Music and Machines” – exploring the future of music and AI following Artist Residencies at the Sage Gateshead and the University of Leeds – to performing Avner Dorman’s prolific 360° percussion concerto at Prague’s Last Night of the Proms with the Beethoven Academy Orchestra followed by a tour of Germany with the Lausitzer Philharmonie. She is an Associate Artist of the Royal Northern College of Music where she won the concerto competition and Gold Medal prize and is a double winner of the Royal Over-Seas League Award.  \n  \n“One of the world’s top harmonica players”  \nDaily Telegraph \nPound has created touring projects questioning Brexit – headlining Shrewsbury Folk Festival – featuring a traditional tune from every EU state and Through the Seasons: an exploration of the history of Morris Dance with Martin Simpson and world-leading story-teller Debs Newbold. His collaborations include Eddy Jay\, Jenn Butterworth\, Dame Evelyn Glennie\, Liz Carrol\, Martin Simpson\, Guy Chambers\, Concerto Caledonia\, Robbie Williams and The Hillsborough Charity Single. Appearances on BBC Breakfast\, BBC2\, Radio 2\, BBC Radio Scotland\, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards\, MTV\, Radio 1xtra to name a few. \n  \nIn 2024 Stevens & Pound collaborate with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Royal Northern College of Music and the youth-led global climate activism organisation Force for Nature to launch The Silent Planet to commemorate Holst’s 150th anniversary in a reimagination of his iconic Planet Suite with orchestra. Holst deliberately omitted Earth as “astrologically insignificant”. Stevens & Pound recognise this as an opportunity to write their own additional movement to the suite\, platforming the voices which are being silenced as our planet faces a climate crisis. Their composition will be orchestrated by Ian Gardiner and conducted by Clark Rundell.  \n  \nAs well as prolifically touring their duo concerts across the UK including Petworth\, Lichfield\, St Magnus International Festival (Orkney)\, Dunster and Swaledale Festivals\, they also look forward to touring Wales with Sinfonia Cymru in 2024 as concerto soloists performing their reimagination of Vaughan Williams’ iconic work The Lark Ascending\, orchestrated by Ian Gardiner in a climate-inspired programme called Regenerate alongside the violinist Simmy Singh.  \n  \nStevens & Pound are EarthPercent artists\, committed to splitting their royalties with climate change organisations.  \n

She will give us new dates as soon as she is able to travel again. \n  \nAfter an outstanding performance in April of last year\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back Laura\, winner of the coveted  Andrés Segovia Prize\, in November\, 2022.  In addition to 1st prize\, she was also awarded the special prize for the best interpretation of the obligatory work all competitors were asked to perform during the week-long competition. \nLaura is German/Belgian. DESCRIPTION:With a sound that is both raw and intimate\, James Dixon engages his audiences across the country with heartfelt lyrics\, soulful vocals and a guitar style described as “red in tooth and claw” (Americana-UK) Heavily inspired by Chris Whitley\, John Martyn\, Kelly Joe Phelps\, Neil Young\, Nic Jones\, Chris Wood and Ralph McTell. \n“Melodic\, soulful and simply beautiful” – BBC Introducing \n“A soul brother….got his fingers in the mud” – Seasick Steve \nJames has a deep respect and passion for the long traditions of his instruments and music. At the same time he is driven by a strong urge to challenge the ossified conventions that keep some of these traditions from new ears. This dance between the past and the present is what makes James’ heart beat when performing. \nChoosing to reject effects pedals altogether\, he chooses from a quiver of instruments including a beloved custom made 6 string cigar-box guitar called “The Weight” after the Band’s classic song; a National Style 0 resonator; 1950s Harmony Silvertone and his Bulwark Guild dreadnought acoustic; all in various traditional open tunings. Well known in the UK cigar-box scene\, James has been collaborating with Dirtbox Guitars (Bude\, Cornwall) for many years\, helping to fine tune the instruments that leave the workshop as well as using various 3 and 4 string models from time to time. Both James and Dirtbox have featured on the cover of Cigar Box Guitar Review magazine \nJames self-released his debut album\, “Trespassing Light”\, in 2020\, just as the pandemic lockdowns started. He has used the time since to focus on writing new material and refining his live sound. A new release is scheduled for early 2024. \nIn 2022 James supported Seasick Steve on all of his shows that year around Europe and UK playing to audiences in legendary venues including Vicar Street (Dublin)\, Paradiso (Amsterdam)\, The Gruenspan (Hamburg)\, and De Roma (Antwerp). This tour provided a platform to grow his music to a wider audience. Having chosen to introduce James onto the stage himself for the final 10 shows of the tour\, Seasick Steve himself described James as “a soul Brother” with “his fingers in the mud”\, deep praise for anyone who knows anything about the Blues. \nIn addition to his solo work\, Dixon has collaborated with a number of other musicians\, including Tame the Brave who recently featured on Amazon’s “Clarkson’s Farm Series 2” with a faithful cover of Alan Jackson’s “Freight Train”. \nAs well as playing across the UK\, you can always catch James in his home-town of Bude\, Cornwall\, where he runs the music venue “The Barrel” and holds a monthly residency. \nJames is committed to playing live and sharing his stories with engaged audiences\, hi songs… “are all “true stories”\, focusing on the largely small and personal rather than big political or social picture. Giving us details of the immediate small scale interactions between individuals that we are all largely missing now” (Americana-UK). \nJames’s music is sure to resonate with listeners who appreciate honesty\, passion and vulnerability. \nListen to James here: https://youtu.be/E21qFBQjpxE?si=x8Bwc_Qe353uVNDp
