Since this time Alex has also released two albums for the prestigious Barcelona-based label Fresh Sound New Talent; ‘Mind-Ear-Ladder’ in a co-led quintet with trumpeter Steve Fishwick (2022) and ‘Common Threads’ with the Fresh Sound Ensemble (2023). SUMMARY:23 January: Gallery Bar Special - Tavy Tars
DESCRIPTION:Experience a great night of ‘songs from the sea’ and a few from the land. \nBased within sight of Calstock\, but on the other side of the Tamar\, the Tavy Tars come from Bere Ferrers and Tavistock and named after the river that links them. They have been a ‘crew’ for around 23 years\, and venues and audiences have ranged from shoppers Selfridges in London to a man and his dog on a rainswept night on Cotehele Quay – as well as shanty festivals at Falmouth\, Mevagissey and Teignmouth. Although they sing the odd well-known shanty\, they perform many other ‘songs of the sea’\, old and new\, plus some that are firmly on or under the land. They love to tell tales about the intriguing ‘back stories’ in the lyrics of many of their songs\, whether in Australia\, Canada or just up the Tamar. So their session features words as well as music.

SUMMARY:16 January Hedera
DESCRIPTION:Hedera \nHedera is a chamber folk project from Bristol featuring Lulu Austin (violin)\, Maisie Brett (Hardanger)\, Tamsin Elliott (accordion\, harp)\, Beth Roberts (double bass\, violin) and Isis Wolf-Light (clarinets). They perform original and traditional pieces inspired by music from England\, Scotland\, France\, Bali\, Georgia\, Bulgaria\, Ethiopia and beyond\, translated through a prism of experimental minimalism and contemporary classical influences. Their eponymous debut album is a collection of twelve original & traditional tunes that reflect their craft as composers\, tune-interpreters and collaborative arrangers (due for release in February 2026). \nIn 2020\, the five musicians began meeting informally to play tunes around winter bonfires\, limited to a small gathering due to the ‘Rule of Six’ pandemic measures. They discovered a shared love of deep listening\, slow playing and improvisation as they taught each other tunes from different traditions. Over time\, the ensemble has evolved into something more structured\, but still retains the intimacy and conviviality of its beginnings. \nIn 2022\, their debut track ‘Waterwheel’ premiered on KLOF Magazine and they performed their first highly acclaimed gigs at Fire in the Mountain festival and The Greenbank\, Bristol. In January 2024 they sold out most gigs on their debut UK tour\, performing in prestigious arts centres including King’s Place (London) and Upfront Arts (Penrith)\, as well as prominent community venues such as Black Fen Folk Club (Cambridge)\, Ashburton Arts Centre and Cornish Bank. Recent gigs include significant slots at Bristol Folk Festival\, Folk East Festival and Allen Valleys Folk Festival\, with many attendees expressing that Hedera was a highlight. \n  \n“Dramatic & deftly played…” – FATEA \n  \n“If I was still booking gigs and festivals… I just saw a band who would be high on my A-list” – Ian Anderson \n

SUMMARY:30 November 2025: Philippa Mo @3.30
DESCRIPTION:After a highly successful solo concert in January 2024\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the virtuosa violinist\, Philippa Mo. \nBetween January and November 2025\, Philippa will be playing a series of concerts ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be highlighted\, tracing his progression as a composer from his earliest compositions written for solo violin to his later works. \nWe are very fortunate that Philippa will be playing the first and final concerts of the series at Calstock Arts. \nFurther information about the other concerts\, all of which will be performed at other venues in the south-west\, will be publicised at a later date. \nPhilippa studied at the royal Academy of Music\, London and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, recitals at the Henry Moore Institute\, Leeds\, the Centre for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, the Deutsches Museum\, Munich\, and further afield at the Ankara International Music Festival\, the Lincoln Center\, New York and Ulaan Bataar\, Mongolia. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokoviev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. \nPhilippa was appointed Senior Lecture in Violin at Leeds Conservatoire and was awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015. In 2020\, she won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nPhilippa delivers the Partita in D minor by Bach\, one of the most deeply contemplative of pieces with the astonishingly complex final movement the Chaconne\, a dance over a ground bass with 64 variations. Missy Mazzoli is a groundbreaking composer from New York who responds to the opening of the Chaconne in her mesmerising piece ‘Dissolve\, O my Heart’. Telemann casts an elegant Baroque path through his solo fantasias and is answered by the exciting young British composer Leo Geyer\, who wrote ‘Guarea‘ for Philippa to perform at the Barbara Hepworth Garden in St Ives. The music comments on the exotic wood and shapes of Hepworth’s most famous sculptures. To continue with an upward trajectory and idea of flight (of fancy\, of fantasy)\, we close with a tiny gem\, ‘Bumblebees’ by Cyril Scott. \nProgramme \nTelemann Fantasia in D major no.10\nMissy Mazzoli Dissolve O My Heart\nBach Partita in D minor BWV 1004 \nInterval \nTelemann Fantasia in Bb major no.1\nBach Cello Suite no.4 in Eb major BWV 1010 arr. for violin\nLeo Geyer Guarea\nScott Bumblebees \nListen to Philippa here & here

SUMMARY:28 November: Knight & Spiers
DESCRIPTION:Both Peter Knight and John Spiers have made long lasting and significant contributions to the English folk scene via their work with Steeleye Span and Bellowhead respectively\, and each in their own way has changed the perception of what traditional music can be\, introducing it to much wider audiences. As members of the Gigspanner Big Band\, they have expanded those boundaries ever further.  \n‘Folk A-Listers’ ‘Folk Royalty’ ‘Folk Icons’ are terms frequently applied to them\, but what it means in reality is that they bring the best of traditional music to any stage they play. \nThe exquisite explorations of the liminal space that exists between traditional and classical music is what makes the music of Peter Knight and John Spiers so compelling and beguiling\, ultimately rendering genres irrelevant. \nIn the words of Tradfolk: As a duo\, they have developed into thrilling exponents of traditional tunes and songs\, repurposing the material as jumping-off points into the most enchanting exploration. \nIt’s largely through touring as a duo that they’ve been able to cultivate what has become an extraordinary partnership\, giving them the confidence to record their latest studio album\, Both in a Tune\, chosen as one of the ‘10 Best New Albums from Around the World’ by the influential music journal\, SONGLINES. \nThe pairing of violin and melodeon is a classic one\, but in the hands of Knight and Spiers\, improvisation and invention meet the listener at every turn. Together they have created a musical document that resonates with history\, but also something to inspire future generations of musicians to engage with Britain’s folk music heritage.  \n “An extraordinary collaboration between two musicians at the absolute top of their game. This is an adventure that takes in musical detours you’d be mad to ignore” – Tradfolk \n“A beautiful snapshot of two musicians at the pinnacle of their craft. Listeners will find themselves lost in something magical; anyone will struggle to find something as masterful as this for a long\, long time” – Bright Young Folk \n“There can be no doubt that both performers are amongst the most\, if not the most\, talented of their peers. I was probably not the only person to leave the venue in awe at having witnessed something very special” – Fatea Records Magazine

SUMMARY:12 October: K'antu Ensemble: Music in the Age of Discovery
DESCRIPTION:K’antu Ensemble: Music in the Age of Discovery \n A return visit from K’antu Ensemble is always a much-anticipated highlight at Calstock Arts. Step into a vibrant tapestry of sound with this acclaimed early music collective who are renowned for their exhilarating fusion of classical\, folk\, and world traditions. They breathe new life into early repertoire\, reimagined through a global lens that is as scholarly as it is spirited. Expect an immersive afternoon of rediscovered melodies\, reimagined traditions\, and spirited musical storytelling from one of the UK’s most adventurous early music ensembles. \nFounded in 2012 by soprano and director Ruth Hopkins\, K’antu Ensemble explore the lesser-known corners of early music\, weaving together the rhythmic vitality of Renaissance Europe\, the rich textures of South American dance music\, and the raw energy of traditional folk. Their name – derived from an ancient Peruvian and Bolivian musical tradition – hints at the ensemble’s fascination with the crosscurrents of global musical exchange. \nThe concert features repertoire from the Codex Martínez Compañón (c. 1782-1785) – a manuscript in nine volumes containing 20 musical scores\, the Cancionero de Palacio – a spanish manuscript of Renaissance music compiled between the mid-1470s and the beginning of the 16th century\, and Terpsichore (1612) – a compendium of over 300 instrumental dances arranged by German composer Michael Praetorius. This specially selected line-up of musicians bring lively interpretations of the works offering infectious rhythms\, haunting harmonies\, and a deep sense of connection to music’s timeless power to move and unite. \nK’antu’s dynamic performances have taken them to major UK venues including Bridgewater Hall\, King’s Place\, and St Martin-in-the-Fields. They have broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and toured internationally to Hungary\, Romania\, and Egypt with the British Council. SUMMARY:4 October: Leveret
DESCRIPTION:LEVERET \n ANDY CUTTING • SAM SWEENEY • ROB HARBRON \nLeveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians.  Andy Cutting (button accordion)\, Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina) are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments.  Together their performances combine consummate musicianship\, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity.  Leveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio rely on mutual trust and musical interaction to create new settings of their repertoire in the moment\, with no two performances alike. Their playing is relaxed and natural\, drawing audiences in and inviting them to share in music making that is truly spontaneous and yet deeply timeless. \n Fiddler Sam Sweeney was the 2015 BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year and the inaugural Artistic Director of the National Youth Folk Ensemble.  He is known for his work in Bellowhead and The Full English\, and his solo recordings including 2022’s Escape That.  Box player Andy Cutting\, a three-time BBC Folk Awards Musician of the year\, is a compelling solo performer and works with Blowzabella\, Topette\, Anne Niepold\, and Roger Daltrey.  Concertina wizard Rob Harbron leads the English Acoustic Collective Summer School\, released his own solo album Meanders in 2019\, and is known for his work with Emily Portman\, The Full English and Emma Reid. \n Leveret celebrated 10 years on the road in 2023 with Forms\, a new album featuring new and traditional tunes played with the band’s trademark interaction and inventiveness.  Leveret’s music is firmly rooted in the English tradition but sounds fresh and new and over the years their intimate presentation style has charmed countless audiences\, helping the trio build a loyal following and demonstrating the enduring appeal and endless potential of the folk tune.  Listeners new and old can expect incredible musicianship and compelling presentation from a band at the top of their game. \n“What was remarkable was the delicacy and quality of their playing and the empathy between the three men\, watching each other intently as they progressed from repeated melody lines to subtle\, spontaneous variations. It was a magical set.” Robin Denselow\, The Guardian **** \n  \n“This is all about the joy of playing and the intoxicating thrill of three masters of their craft … the empathy between them as the music ebbs and flows is exceptional; you can also see the smiles and winks between them. The feel-good warmth they generate is palpable.” Colin Irwin\, fROOTS \n  \n“Classy players … their intuitive way with tunes is glorious” Mojo \n“You won’t find English folk music played better than this” R2 \n“Inspiringly good” fROOTS \n  \n“In folk music you need to hear the human. Leveret have got that trance-like thing – I’ve taken people to Leveret concerts who don’t necessarily have an interest in folk and they’ve totally got it.  There’s so much in those tunes and it takes real skill to see it and bring it out.  There’s a variation there between the three of them that goes on constantly.  Even if you don’t appreciate what traditional music is you can still be blown away by it…”  \nVerity Sharp [BBC Radio 3 Late Junction] \n“The intimacy and the intensity of this in the round experience was unlike anything I had heard all year. In folk\, it’s the sound of what’s to come” TheArtsDesk.com \n“Music of a rich\, sinewy immersion\, guided by a mutual sense of exploration\, space and a very English kind of swing.  It’s an intimate\, contemporary reinvention of the source material”  \nThe Guardian \n“This glimmering set of instrumentals cuts unfailingly elegant lines” \nThe Sunday Times \n“Sublime\, exquisite music – don’t miss them”   \nMartin Simpson \n

SUMMARY:20 September: Katie Spencer
DESCRIPTION:Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through her assured guitar style and songwriting. Now\, as Katie steps into this new era with a third album\, her focus turns to those deeper inner spaces\, inviting the listener to engage with her heartfelt and intricately-crafted songs. \nHer writing\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, Judee Sill\, Julie Byrne and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, weave into her sound. Katie absorbs these influences into her songwriting and with her distinctive deep vibrato and crystal-clear guitar style\, she makes the music inimitably her own. \nKatie will release her third album\, What Love Is\, in October 2025; an intimate collection of ten brand-new songs produced by Matt Ingram (Laura Marling\, The Staves). Recorded in London’s Urchin Studios and featuring prominent players Giacomo Smith (clarinet)\, Max Clilverd (pedal steel)\, Tom Mason (double bass) and Matt Ingram (drums\, synth). What Love Is evokes the spirit of Joni Mitchell’s finest later works\, always honouring without emulating. Lyrically mature and at times pastoral; the album is melodically sophisticated and unflinchingly honest. She moves effortlessly from wide-open jazz-tinged soundscapes\, influenced by Pharoah Sanders and John Abercrombie\, through to the folk-baroque fingerpicking style that her fans admire her for. Her singing is powerful yet warm\, true and pristine in delivery. The musicianship throughout the record feels liberated by Katie’s innovation and confidence\, and the result is a master-class of inspired and beautiful-sounding craftmanship. \nKatie has toured extensively and is a powerful and confident presence on stage\, delivering her finely-tuned music with humour and insight. It is often said that Katie draws audiences into her mesmerising and musically articulate world with gentle affection and care. Her impressive live touring schedule is testament to this\, and has seen her headline some of the most prestigious venues in the UK\, including Portsmouth Cathedral and The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge\, and perform at many respected major folk festivals such as the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival. Her live history also features many overseas adventures including extensive tours in Europe and Australia (including Port Fairy Folk Festival). This year\, Katie continues to tour widely in the UK and Europe\, and was also invited to represent Britain and perform at the prestigious Folk Alliance International in Montreal\, Canada. She recently became the owner and endorsee of a custom-built signature guitar\, specially crafted for her by distinguished luthier Tom Sands and is looking forward to taking this beautiful instrument out on the road in 2025. \n“Her articulate picking\, with suggestions of folk and jazz\, frames intelligently written songs” – Guitarist Magazine  \n“… a world-class folk guitarist” – fRoots \n“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver\, she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces tapestries of song.” – Ralph McTell \n“One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.” – RnR Magazine \n“A timeless English folk album…” – Shindig! \n“This is beautifully written and played music\, with the quiet consistency and confidence in its performers of some of Laura Marling’s best work. Wonderful stuff; let this one live with you for a while to discover its powers.” – KLOF \nwww.katiespencer.net

SUMMARY:17 July Gallery Bar Special - with The Hungry Bears
DESCRIPTION:Hungry Bears! (band) is an extension of the long-standing Hungry Bears! duo. Rob and Derek have been writing and recording songs for many years\, and\, in support of the forthcoming Hungry Bears! album\, they are taking the songs on the road. \nIn order to produce the new songs live\, they have added bass player Rich Jones and drummer Nick Carter. \nThis is a new project and a departure from the usual show that the Hungry Bears! duo delivers. The new band plays a high proportion of original songs\, together with a selection of well-known\, but not commonly played covers. \nDerek Wood (guitars and vocals) \nDerek provides versatile vocals and an ‘energy charged’ acoustic guitar style that is the trade- mark of the Hungry Bears! sound. His songs are a major feature of the Hungry Bears!  set which comprise an eclectic range of styles. \nWhen Derek is not appearing with Hungry Bears! he performs a solo set consisting of well known\, but less often played covers\, together with some self-penned songs. He has established himself as a solo act in numerous venues in Devon and Cornwall. \nRob Williams (guitar) \nRob is a virtuosic and multi-styled guitarist who met Derek in 2008\, in their previous band ’80 Degrees’. They formed Hungry Bears! as a duo in 2010 and have played in excess of 750 gigs together. Rob has also been involved in many and various other bands including ‘Joey The Lips’ and currently\, with Rich Jones\, is a member of ‘The Filthy Gorgeous’. \nHis guitar playing contributes enormously to the unique Hungry Bears! sound and has co-written some of the songs that feature in the band’s set. \nNick Carter (drums) \nNick Carter has been a professional drummer for over 30 years during which time he’s performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists including Jimmy Osmond\, The Osmond Brothers\, TM Stevens\, Jeff Berlin\, Marco Mendoza\, Swans In Flight\, Doug Wimbish & many more. As a seasoned\, professional player Nick is at-home on stages of any size and has played numerous shows in a wide range of venues around the globe. \nThanks to his dedication and knowledge of all things drum-related\, Nick is also an experienced music journalist\, having previously held the title of editor of Drummer magazine (2012-2014)\, where he conducted interviews with the biggest names in drumming as well as having reviewed the freshest new gear available on the market and devised features aimed squarely at inspiring and educating the next generation of players. \nRich Jones (bass) \nRich is a sought-after bass player with enormous experience\, having played with many bands over a 20 year period. With Rob\, he is also a member of the celebrated band ‘The Filthy Gorgeous’ and joins the new Hungry Bears! project with the aim of contributing to a team intent on creating new music. \nRich’s influences are many and varied from funk and jazz to more melodic mainstream pop. His addition to the band creates\, with Nick Carter\, a driving rhythm section which is the ‘engine room’ of the band. \n  \n

SUMMARY:13 June: Tobias ben Jacob & Chris Cleverley (plus special guest Isabel Inkcap)
DESCRIPTION:Tobias ben Jacob – The Bright Road \n Following on from his solo albums ‘A Polyphonic Life’ and ‘Refuge’ and ten years touring and recording with his duo; Tobias ben Jacob returns to preview some brand new songs from a forthcoming solo album as well as songs from his back catalogue with special guest accompanist Chris Cleverley. \nHailing from Preston\, Lancashire but now based in Devon Tobias’ music is steeped in classic guitar songwriting and folk traditions but makes more unexpected departures into what Tom Robinson called ‘innovative explorations in songwriting’   \n‘’Stand out new- folk\, superb ‘ Chris Hawkins BBC6  \n‘’Significant songs that deserve to be heard ‘ KLOF Mag \nChris Cleverley was born under a solstice moon\, in the honeysuckle mysticism of a late 80s Midsummer. As his fledgling days unfurled\, the symbolic sounds of ‘Hunky Dory’\, ‘Graceland’ and ‘Ladies of The Canyon’ echoed from the woodchip walls of the South Birmingham terrace where he was raised; quiet and curious\, saturnine and shy. Here\, the soul of a young artist was shaped. \nIsabel Inkcap is a young songwriter and folk artist who is ‘quickly cementing her presence as one of the more emotive and heartfelt names emerging this year’ (Luna Collective). She is currently long listed in the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition. \nFast-forward three decades; With five nationally acclaimed records under his belt\, and ringing endorsements from The Times\, Telegraph and BBC6 Music\, 2x FATEA ‘Male Artist of the Year’ Chris Cleverley is described as “One of the most vital voices of his Folk generation” (KLOF) \n His boundary-shattering ‘Dream-Folk’ songwriting sits on the cutting edge of acoustic music. Exploring powerful\, human themes from displaced people to the fragile beauty of our natural world\, we travel with him from the arid deserts of Syria\, to the rich Mediterranean sunsets of the Cretan coastline; a captivating voyage of place\, landscape\, season and self. With a compendium of songs for the misfits\, steeped in love\, joy\, grief\, anxiety and empathy\, his truly immersive performance unites each individual in the room on their own journey towards finding a place in this head-spinning modern world.  \n A true guitar-man\, his breathtaking fingerstyle technique dances above lush ambient soundscapes\, drawing comparisons ranging from Lo-fi American Greats\, Elliott Smith & Sufjan Stevens to UK guitar royalty John Martyn & Nic Jones; a curious tapestry weaved from the hazy psychedelia of the 60s folk revival and the soulful oblivion of the 90s Pacific Northwest. Whether you like your folk music contemporary or classic\, Chris Cleverley has you covered.  \nWith replenishing calm and warm humour\, this unique one-man live show occupies the space between concert performance and yoga nidra meditation; plunging audiences head first into a revitalising journey that promises to leave them feeling that little bit more wholesome than when they arrived. \n Listen to them here \nHauntingly serene. Effortlessly 21st Century. \n “Rather Lovely Electro-Folk” – Radcliffe & Maconie – BBC 6 MUSIC \n“The feel of Elliott Smith and Sufjan Stevens” ★★★★ – Scottish Daily Express \n“Frighteningly brilliant works” – The Daily Star  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
