SUMMARY:4 March: Charlotte Glasson Band
DESCRIPTION:“Versatile contemporary jazz and fusion saxophonist / multi-instrumentalist / composer plays diverse originals all laced with her own bluesy\, expressive sax work.”  Time Out – London \nSince winning the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at the Marlborough Jazz Festival\, the Charlotte Glasson Band have been wowing audiences at venues across the U.K.\, including the London Jazz Festival\, Love Supreme Festival and Pizza Express Live (Soho).  The band\, led by Charlotte a multi-instrumentalist and composer\, play mainly original music\, specialising in weaving together sounds from across the globe to create a brand of music defined by rhythm and melody\, a world of bird call and sunshine. \nStylistically\, Charlotte’s compositions draw on Latin rhythms\, New Orleans Mardi Gras\, Swing\, Arabic\, Spaghetti Western and Gypsy Jazz influences\, sensitively combined into something uniquely her own\, upbeat and bouncy on the surface but with interesting twists and turns as a sub-text. She uses the enormously varied instrumental resources at her disposal in an unfailingly imaginative way – her own armoury alone contains a small orchestra’s worth of sonic possibilities. \nWhen you add in contributions by such fine players as trombonist virtuoso Mark Bassey\, and legendary guitarist Chris Spedding\, this is a band who create a unique and uplifting experience\, filled with colourful grooves\, lush ballads and high energy swing. \n‘If you’ve ever wondered what smiles sound like\, this is it.’ (Jackie Hayden – Hot Press) \n“If you could bottle this band’s music\, how wonderful it would be to inhale it to start every day.” Express and Star\, Lichfield. \n“Multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Glasson will restore your faith in jazz. Witty\, exuberant and genre defying stuff” @LocalSCambridge \nListen to Charlotte and her band here: https://youtu.be/FXsiF2CfJaU \nAnd here: https://youtu.be/_Dk0_-CqC0U \nAnd here:https://youtu.be/y3l-kD2WX_Q

SUMMARY:3 March 2023: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required\, there is no mistaking that to a man\, they love their county with a passion. \nNow in their fifth year\, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival\, The Rock Oyster Festival\, Falmouth Week\, Bridport Folk Festival\, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day. \n2022 will see the band take on a third concert tour of both Cornwall and Devon entitled “Songs of Hope” which the band feels is an appropriate name for the times we currently live in. \nThe band was formed from an Open Mic Night at their local\, The Countryman Inn near Launceston\, which is where the band’s name originates.  They soon found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for an emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire. \nIn addition to offering quality live entertainment on stage\, they have also been busy in the recording studio and have released three online EPs to date\, Cornish Lads Vol.1\, 2 and not unsurprisingly\, Cornish Lads Vol.3.                  \nThey also released their debut CD album\, “Trees On The Hill” a few years ago and have recently released their long-awaited second album\, “The River Rolls On”. \n“If you get the chance to see these guys (The Countrymen) in concert then take it\, you will not be disappointed” \nFor more info \nFacebook:        www.facebook.com/countrymenband \nInstagram:        @thecountrymenbandcornwall \nTwitter:             @thecountrymenband \nHashtags:         #cornishmusic #cornishfolk  #thecountrymen #songsofhope \n

SUMMARY:24 February 2023: Xhosa Cole
DESCRIPTION:Xhosa Cole ‘Rhythm-a-Ting’ Quartet \nXhosa Cole – Tenor Sax\, \nSteve Saunders – Guitar\, \nJosh Vadiveloo – Double Bass\, \nNathan England-Jones – Drums \nOn his return to Calstock\, Xhosa Cole presents his new ensemble ‘Rhythm-a-Ting’\, performing an exploration and re-imagining of the music of Thelonious Monk\, taking those original timeless melodies and adding a contemporary touch with new arrangements and new rhythmic interpretations. \nSince winning the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the year award\, Xhosa has headlined London’s prestigious venues such as Cadogan Hall and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club\, performed twice at the BBC Proms\, collected further accolades (Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Best Newcomer’; Jazz FM ‘Breakthrough Act of the Year’) and released his debut album (‘K(no)w Them\, K(no)w Us’) to critical acclaim. Growing up in Handsworth\, Xhosa rose through community arts programmes in Birmingham and is among a long legacy of celebrated Birmingham saxophonists such as Soweto Kinch and Shabaka Hutchings. Having been the recipient of some of the UKs best music education and mentorship\, he has gone on to become a passionate educator himself. \nXhosa’s deep and authentic connection to the lineage of jazz music has helped to establish him among the most exciting young talents in the country. At this stage in his career he is continually learning\, developing and growing. He embraces players from different traditions and outlooks related to his African heritage. This\, and a grounding in his inner-city community\, has created a fiercely unique and independent voice. \n“He’s got technique\, talent\, artistry and a burning desire that shows throughout the set.” Downbeat 2021 \n“A young player with formidable technique and a solid grasp of the post-John Coltrane African American tradition” Chris May All about Jazz \nListen here:  https://youtu.be/J_3f9W-u7lM

This follows on from a busy 2022 including tour dates\, festivals and a run of harbourside performances travelling by ship! \nSeth was part of the ‘Sea Song Sessions’ album – a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties released in September 2022 on Topic Records. SUMMARY:20 January: Gallery Bar Special with The Blues Dukes
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nJeff “the Horse” Horsey      Harmonica\,Guitar and Vocals \nGareth Hedges                     Guitar and Vocals \nGeorge Nixs                          Lead Guitar and Vocals \nColin Boyd                            Bass Guitar and Vocals. \n  \nFour veterans of the SW Music scene have formed a 4-piece band playing Blues and Roots music. \nGareth Hedges has played and recorded in the UK\, America\, Europe and even Australia. He is a wonderful guitar picker and has a lived in\, authentic vocal style\, having learnt first-hand from artists like Bill Munroe\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan\, all of whom he has spent time with. \nGeorge Nixs is a flamboyant\, virtuoso lead guitar player and his playing lights up a lot of the material the band do. He used to do session work at Abbey Road Studios and counted Peter Green\, Eric Clapton and the Hollies among his musical friends. He played with future AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson\, in a band called Geordie in the 1970s. \nColin Boyd is well known locally as one of the best Bass players around and has a distinctive style all his own. In the past he has famously worked with the Kinks and Lou Reed! \nJeff Horsey played in Exeter based band Junkyard Angels and toured widely\, backing Louisiana Legend Tabby Thomas and playing alongside artists as diverse as Geno Washington\, Peter Green and even Screaming Lord Sutch. He gets to concentrate on his singing and Harmonica playing but also plays some Slide Guitar. \nTogether they perform funky versions of well-known blues covers\, lesser known songs you wished you had heard before and a few original numbers\, all blending into an exciting\, highly listenable gumbo with lots of harmony singing giving them a special edge. The music sweeps from almost Bluegrass acoustic numbers to full on Chicago style Blues\, touching base with Rock n’ Roll and even Skiffle on the way! \nLoud enough to dance to and quiet enough to listen! \n  \nListen to them here:https://youtu.be/W0Hayf5CZXc

SUMMARY:25 November: Lady Maisery
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning vocal trio Lady Maisery are long celebrated for their innovation at the forefront of the English folk scene. \nAll composers and multi-instrumentalists in their own right\, Hazel Askew\, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans weave together a rich palate of sounds with their unique approach to harmony singing\, intelligent and thoughtful arrangements of both traditional repertoire and original compositions. \nWhether unearthing a feminist twist hidden in a traditional tale\, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad\, or showcasing their immense multi-instrumental talents in original compositions that draw on a myriad of musical influences\, Lady Maisery are skillful explorers of the power\, beauty and vitality of song. \nPerhaps the most striking part of their performances is the magic that happens between them\, a chemistry that can only grow from years of creating music together – when they begin to sing one unanimous voice emerges\, carrying stories of sisterhood\, human suffering and the joy of living and singing in harmony. \nOver the last twelve years\, the trio have released five albums and toured widely\, performing sell-out shows across the UK and Europe. \nTheir next album – due for release in November 2022 – is eagerly awaited by their listeners. \n‘The most exquisite vocal harmony work on the English folk scene’ The Guardian \n‘Lady Maisery are women with ideas\, purpose and urgency…. powerful\, enthralling work’ Songlines * * * * \nListen to Lady Maisery here

SUMMARY:19 November: Janice Burns and Jon Doran
DESCRIPTION:Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an Anglo-Scottish duo who formed in 2017\, after discovering a shared love of traditional music. \nThey find their songs in archives that span the depths of our history; songs that\, regardless of age\, tell vivid stories about the nature of life\, from the ethereal landscapes of ancient ballads to the urban rhythms of work songs. Their compelling storytelling comes alive through tight vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin and bouzouki\, with arrangements that balance intricacy with energy. Their dynamic performances are a celebration of their own musical and geographic backgrounds\, embracing the differences that connect them. \nThe duo met whilst studying folk and traditional music at Newcastle University\, spending one year at the University of South-East Norway together. These experiences allowed them to hone their craft whilst expanding their audiences further beyond the UK. After three years of working together and performing in notable venues such as Sage Gateshead and Folklub Newcastle\, they decided to record their debut EP. It was released in September 2020 to overwhelmingly positive feedback. \n“The clarity and blend in their voices and their beautifully honed playing captivated the sell-out audience at Folklub Newcastle to the point that you could hear a pin drop. They have invested fully in their craft and their sound as a duo and the results are breathtaking.”\nKatie Doherty (Katie Doherty and the Navigators) \nListen to Janice and Jon here \nFor more information \njanandjon.co.uk\nfacebook.com/janandjon\ntwitter.com/janiceandjon1\ninstagram.com/janandjonmusic

SUMMARY:4 November: Windjammer
DESCRIPTION:Windjammer are a trio who cast timeless stories in a context of their own making. They blend self-penned songs and instrumentals with original\, genre-bending arrangements of music drawn from the traditions of British folk. Turning unflinchingly from soft\, delicate emphasis to shoulder-rolling grind\, and from light harmonies to prog-infused instrumentalism\, they have a habit of keeping audiences surprised and engaged with ever-changing soundscapes. Their debut album\, ‘Awaken’ (produced by Sean Lakeman)\, showcases and expands this palette in a studio context. \nThe band\, comprised of Jake Sonny Rowlinson\, Jeremy Bunting and Fran Rowney\, formed around the folk and acoustic music scene in Plymouth\, where they maintain a strong local presence. Jake and Fran met in 2014 at folk sessions in Plymouth’s famous Dolphin Inn\, where they became firm friends and developed a short-lived duo. During this time\, Jeremy was performing as a solo act and the three met whilst performing at the same venues around Plymouth. The three rapidly became friends and collaborators\, forming Windjammer in 2015. \nWith an ever-growing fan base and a distinctive\, uncompromisingly original approach to their craft\, the trio are generating real momentum. Windjammer are increasingly performing further afield\, with festival credits including Cambridge Folk Festival\, Latitude and Hartlepool Folk Festival\, whilst continuing to play an active role in the grassroots folk scene of Plymouth\, East Cornwall and South Devon. \n  \nListen to Windjammer Band here

DESCRIPTION:Unquenching Fire Tour 2022\nIn this exciting new collaboration from two of British folk’s finest voices\, Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) and Hannah Martin (Edgelarks\, GigspannerBig Band) join forces to present a set of songs that take them back to their shared roots. \nHaving played together on numerous occasions\, including in Steve Knightley’s Wake the Union Band and at the Royal Albert Hall\, they knew that they shared an instinctive ear for harmony and skilled instrumental improvisation. A sociable Devon winter evening led to an exchange of songs\, which proved to be so much fun\, they soon arranged another musical get together. Swiftly these became rehearsal sessions\, as a strong new sound emerged. \nMiranda and Hannah have spent many years playing on the British folk scene\, with several appearances at Calstock Arts\, but neither has ever dedicated an entire set to traditional song. Centred around their deep knowledge of roots music\, and a love of harmony singing\, they bring together old songs with new ideas; ancient tales with bass\, fiddle\, and banjo; and two mesmerising storytellers joining voices to create a spine-tingling testimonial to our shared musical heritage.
