DESCRIPTION:Described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘A worthy successor to Julian Bream’\, the Australian-born guitarist Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation. \nLook at the programme for the evening here. \nHe studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of thirteen. In 2004\, he became the youngest instrumentalist to receive a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He has performed concertos with many of the world’s leading orchestras and numerous composers have written works specially for him. In 2017\, he gave the world première of Andy Scott’s Guitar Concerto with the Northern Chamber Orchestra\, followed by the Australian première in Perth. In the summer of 2019\, he gave the world première of Il Filo with Miloš Milivojević\, a double concerto for guitar and accordion by David Gordon. Craig gave the world premiere of a concerto written for him by David Knotts in March 2022 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall\, London with the BBC Concert Orchestra which was recorded for BBC Radio 3 and filmed for BBC4 TV and is currently available on BBC iplayer. In July 2022\, Craig gave the world premiere of ‘Isolation Songs (Without Words)’ a new guitar concerto written for him by William Lovelady with the English Chamber Orchestra for Music in Country Churches with HM The King in attendance. The work received its London première in November 2022 at Cadogan Hall. In January 2023 he gave the world première of a guitar concerto by Greg Caffrey with the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast\, recorded for BBC Radio 3. \nCraig Ogden regularly appears as soloist and chamber musician at major venues\, collaborating with top UK artists such as the Nash Ensemble\, Carducci String Quartet and the London Tango Quintet\, of which he is a regular member. He performed in the concert series devoted to Sir Michael Tippett at the Wigmore Hall and has given several concerts at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. One of the UK’s most recorded guitarists\, he has accumulated an acclaimed discography for Chandos\, Virgin/EMI\, Nimbus\, Hyperion\, Sony and six chart-topping albums for Classic FM. His most recent recordings are a solo recital disc for Chandos\, Craig Ogden in Concert and a new arrangement of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach with violinist David Juritz and cellist Tim Hugh for Nimbus Records. He frequently records for film and has presented programmes for BBC Radio 3\, BBC Northern Ireland\, and ABC Classic FM in Australia. \nCraig Ogden is Director of Guitar at the Royal Northern College of Music\, Adjunct Fellow of the University of Western Australia\, Associate Artist at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and Director of the Dean & Chadlington Summer Music Festival. DESCRIPTION:James Halsey studied cello at the Royal College of Music with Eileen Croxford\, and whilst still a senior student in the early 1980s\, joined the Auriol String Quartet and was straightaway involved in more than 40 recitals each season. \nThis love of chamber music stayed and developed throughout his career. James was cellist of the Dartington Piano Trio and he is now cellist of the highly acclaimed Bingham String Quartet and the Tagore String Trio. With these ensembles he has played all over the world\, broadcast frequently\, and made numerous recordings. \nAs a solo cellist\, James has performed widely in the British Isles\, and has played Beethoven Sonatas and unaccompanied Bach in Japan and Australia as well as the UK. \nAt present\, James coaches on seven annual chamber courses and is much in demand as a teacher. Several of his former pupils are cellists in professional string quartets. She grew up to study at Exeter University and the Royal College of Music and has been a full-time professional musician for almost thirty years\, performing internationally. \nAs a recitalist\, she is well-known for her warm and approachable presentation style. The Bath Chronicle said of her: “It is hard to say just which was more pleasurable – the exquisite playing or the often deliciously outrageous stories of composers’ lives that Elizabeth Jane recounted in between the music.” \nShe is the only specialist silent movie harpist in the world\, playing live to cinema screenings of early film\, and has won multiple awards for her silent film accompaniments and compositions. Her uniquely rich tone on the harp has graced film and TV soundtracks screened in over thirty countries including America\, Canada\, Iceland\, Kenya\, Iran\, South Africa\, Poland and Cyprus. DESCRIPTION:Leveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians.  Andy Cutting (button accordion)\, Sam Sweeney (fiddle) and Rob Harbron (concertina) are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments.  Together their performances combine consummate musicianship\, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity. \nLeveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and the trio rely on mutual trust and musical interaction to create new settings of their repertoire in the moment\, with no two performances alike. DESCRIPTION:  \nAs part of a UK-wide tour\, we welcome back Dave Manington’s Riff Raff who last played here in 2018. Bassist and composer Dave Manington is one of the mainstays of the London contemporary music scene. He has played with many of the pre-eminent jazz musicians in the UK and Europe and with various ensembles from South America to the Balkans. In 2005 he co-founded the Loop Collective to pool creative resources with other like-minded musicians and is a founder member of the highly acclaimed Yazz Ahmed Quartet and Tori Freestone’s Solstice. In 2022 he was nominated for an Ivor Novello award for best jazz composition. \n“[the music] grooves like hell with some thick mercurial riffs\, full of stops\, starts and turns yet rocking in the grip of a savage momentum.” \nJAZZWISE \nDave Manington’s Riff Raff is his main ongoing project. This London-based super group is a dynamic ensemble of amongst the most creative musicians working in contemporary jazz\, featuring: softly surefooted vocalist Brigitte Beraha\, award-winning pianist Ivo Neame\,  the articulate Tomas Challenger on tenor\, John Scofield-like guitarist Rob Updegraff and cutting-edge  drummer Tim Giles. Their music is intimate and creative\, with a delicate interplay forged from many years performing together. SUMMARY:23 September: Gallery Bar Special - Louise Parker Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Plymouth based jazz & soul singer Louise Parker\, joined by her band\, Neil Burns (guitar)\, Jem Fatna (drums) and Pasquale Votino (bass) return to the Old Chapel this autumn. \nLouise Parker  \nLouise  started singing late\, but soon found out she had a feel for jazz. Her father had an extensive record collection\, many Blue Note albums\, ranging from Bix Beiderbecke all the way through each decade to John Coltrane. Her mother was very keen on Opera and folk music. \nMusic was always in the background in the family home. \nLouise has played in Pizza Express Dean Street\, Pizza on the Park\, The Bull’s Head\, Barnes and The Hammersmith Apollo. She has also toured extensively\, and played many festivals – including Glastonbury\, jazz festivals\, and theatres in the UK. The Hammersmith Apollo was a memorial concert in tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton who she  recorded with in 2008. She was the last singer to record with him at his studio in London – “Cornucopia 3” \nIn addition to Humphrey Lyttelton\, Louise has played and recorded with Dave Newton\, Alan Barnes (No More Strangers)\, Steve Waterman\, Max Turnbull (Don’t Explain)\, George Cooper and Matt Carter. \nJem Fatna \nJean Emmanuel Fatna raised in Martinique and French Guiana\, is a self taught drummer and percussionist. Born into a long line of musicians\, he began playing at the age of 2. Spiritually nurtured by the arts\, for him music is a gift and through grace is transmitted. His sound and approach to music have been influenced by his Afro-Caribbean and Amazonian heritage\, as well as his time living and playing music in New York. \nExperienced in various styles – reggae\, hip hop\, funk\, jazz\, world music- he performs live shows and collaborates in studio sessions with a rich and diverse mix of artists including Myles Sanko\, Kuku\, Winston Francis\, Sparky in The Clouds\, Dub Judah\, Urban Twoubadoo\, Daryll Hall trio\, Alain Jean-Marie\, Mariann Matheus\, David Cairol\, Nish Wadada. Jem has performed at venues like: Olympia\, Zénith\, Royal Opera House etc \nNeil Burns \nScottish Guitarist Neil Burns has been immersed in the south west jazz scene for many years. He has performed all over Europe and is a regular calibrator of top trumpeter Steve Waterman\, Guitar legend Jim Mullen\, vibraphonist Roger Beaujolais and has also worked with Jacqui Dankworth\, Zoe Rahman \, Simon Spillett\, Dave Newton\, Mark Bassey \, Bobby Wellins\, Greg Abate and The Haggis Horns\, to name a few. \nA melodic guitarist steeped in the jazz guitar tradition. \nPasquale Votino \nPasquale was born in Naples and studied Classical Music under Rino Zurzolo at Benevento Conservatory\, before moving to UK. From a young age he developed a passion for jazz\, alongside classical music. Four fine musicians whose roots are firmly in the traditional English genre\, but who enjoy stretching the limits – in what a lot of people refer to as ‘the quirky Banter twist”.  Formed in 2015\, due to a happy accident\, they immediately realised their common love for traditional English song and dance and began to mess around with it. \nThey gained popularity\, or should it be notoriety\, very quickly and were soon performing at many of the country’s largest festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Cambridge FF\, Sidmouth FF and Towersey. \nWith the release of two albums\, YES and DARE\, between 2017 and 2019\, they received more plaudits in the music press including a Valentines day session on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 Folk Show. \nNow firmly established as one of the UK’s finest bands they have recorded their third studio album “Three”. SUMMARY:17 September- Meridianum Ensemble @ 1515
DESCRIPTION:The Meridianum Ensemble is a unique musical collaboration\, bringing together top players from Portugal\, the UK and Morocco. The six musicians bring their individual styles and influences to the mix\, inspired by traditions from Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean to Portugal\, Scandinavia and beyond. Modal music\, improvisation and virtuosity are a feature of their gloriously entrancing infusion. Featuring traditional and original repertoire for Arabic oud\, Middle Eastern percussion\, cittern\, Persian Santur\, Swedish nyckelharpa and the mediaeval sounds of the hurdy-gurdy\, this blend is a sonic and visual treat. \nFounded in 2018 by UK-based Portuguese percussionist Ricardo de Noronha\, the idea was to draw his collaborators into one ensemble. Santur player Nuno Silva (the only non-UK member) resides in Porto and previously worked with Ricardo in several groups\, especially on the mediaeval scene in Portugal. In 2019 Nuno studied the santur in Iran. Through his interest in mediaeval music Ricardo met top UK hurdy-gurdy player Steve Tyler\, renowned for his rhythmic and inventive style. DESCRIPTION:Having played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nBassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaboration with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, performances at major Jazz Festivals\,  appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio. \nWang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nHer third studio album- Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. The album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and two carefully selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike.  The Guardian \n  \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ ( BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now!  In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release in 2023. \n  \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. DESCRIPTION:Burd Ellen is a project featuring Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts\, Green Ribbons) and Gayle Brogan (Pefkin\, Electroscope). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Innovative instrumentation\, drone and sound-wash support detailed vocal work to create a unique sonic atmosphere. \nThey self-released their debut album Silver Came in 2019. Their second album\, Says The Never Beyond\, is a collection of carols and wintersong that occupy the liminal space between sacred and secular\, connecting to the deep seasonal traditions of Britain and Ireland. The record was critically well received\, finding its spot in the top 10 of 2020 for many publications including The Guardian and Folk Radio UK. \nA Tarot Of The Green Wood is their third studio album\, released Oct 2022. Debbie Armour says “I’m a long time collector and lover of tarot\, and I’ve recently become drawn to the idea of finding parallels between interpretation of traditional song and the art of divination. Jim Moray may have garnered initial attention for his digitally-driven approach to traditional music\, but reflecting on his seven albums and numerous production credits it’s clear that imagination and invention are the real cornerstones of his work. \nThe cinematic vision of albums such as Skulk (2012)\, Upcetera (2016)\, and his game-changing debut Sweet England (2003) show just how far the old songs can be taken. His arrangements of traditional songs such as Gilderoy\, Horkstow Grange and Fair Margaret and Sweet William are regarded as amongst the classics of the folk genre\, while his treatment of the ballad Lord Douglas has become a must-learn for fingerstyle guitarists. \nAs Moray embarks on his third decade as a professional musician\, he can count career-defining performances at Glastonbury\, The Royal Albert Hall\, and WOMAD\, and has caught the attention of those in the know along the way. “I love this singer of old ballads”\, enthused none other than Iggy Pop\, no stranger to songs of love\, life and loss. 20 years in the business also means that his influence is being felt among a younger generation of folk musicians\, especially those who explore the wider canon and ways in which traditional music can be stretched. DESCRIPTION:Listen to interview on Radio Cornwall 1440 on 5th May 2023!! \nThe Oxley-Meier Guitar Project was established ten years ago\, following these two guitarist’s tenure in the unique quartet\, ‘Eclectica!‘ In that decade\, they have recorded 7 albums together\, ranging from duet to quintet formats and have performed literally hundreds of concerts together throughout the UK and Europe. \nThey are joined by Paul Cavaciuti on drums and Ralph Mizraki on bass. \nRegardless of the size of the ensemble\, Oxley & Meier have always maintained their two aims: \n– to write guitar-based music that is exciting\, engaging and fascinating to anybody interested in music. \n– to use an expansive range of instruments in order to deliver a stylistically wide ranging programme. \nTo achieve this\, they usually use ten different guitars at their gigs. DESCRIPTION:It’s commonly accepted that Dublin-born singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell is one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. \nA product of Dublin’s famous club An Góilin Traditional Singers\, since launching his own solo live career at the 2016 Celtic Connections\, Daoirí Farrell has gone from strength to strength. On the verge of releasing his fourth solo album in early 2023\, he can boast numerous honours from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards to ALSR Celtic Music accolades. \nHe has received endorsements from the likes of Christy Moore (‘Daoirí has assumed the mantle of Luke [Kelly]’)\, Mark Radcliffe (‘What a voice’) and Dónal Lunny (‘Daoirí is one of the most important traditional singers to emerge in the last decade’)\, with his music and live performances earning the acclaim of respected publications including MOJO\, The Irish Post\, Songlines and more. \n ‘Daoirí Farrell is singlehandedly spearheading a resurgence of the authentic in Irish folk music…he is rightly in demand all over the world.’ Irish Music  \nThe debut album\, ‘The First Turn’\, surfaced back in 2009\, with his breakthrough album appearing in 2016 with the powerful ‘True Born Irishman’\, a set that Songlines called ‘an album that could yet prove to be one of the most significant Irish releases of recent years.’ It went on to win him two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \n Following 2019’s ‘A Lifetime Of Happiness’\, which earned three nominations in the RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards and FATEA’s ‘nothing less than a quintessential Irish folk album’ approval\, Daoirí’s long-awaited fourth album\, ‘The Wedding Above In Glencree’\, is set for release in late February 2023. \n Daoirí’s live work sees the 2013 All Ireland Champion Singer touring far and wide\, performing regularly at festivals around the globe including in Canada\, Australia and Europe. SUMMARY:15 April: Laura Lootens - Spain Meets Italy
DESCRIPTION:Laura Lootens is an international music star in the making! \nOnly three months ago\, 23-year-old Laura won the coveted Andrés Segovia Prize\, one of the world’s most important music competitions held annually in Spain. In addition to 1st prize she was also awarded the special prize for the best interpretation of the obligatory work all competitors were asked to perform during the week-long competition. \nLaura is German/Belgian. She discovered her passion for playing the guitar when she was eight years old and made her orchestral debut\, playing Rodrigo’s famous ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ aged 15. A year later she was one of the youngest students ever to begin studying for the Bachelor of Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. \nIn 2019 she won the scholarship of the prestigious German Music Competition open for all instruments\, one of Germany’s highest accolades for a young musician. \nLaura’s concert career took-off following her performance at the Gasteig\, Munich\, in the internationally acclaimed ‘Winners and Masters’ series. That brought her to the attention of German music lovers and since then Laura has appeared at important festivals and concert halls in Germany\, including Bonn’s famous Beethoven Festival and the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker. \nDuring the last two years\, news of Laura’s talent and virtuosity has spread\, and she has received invitations to perform throughout Europe\, including Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw.  As part of her second UK tour\, Laura has generously agreed to perform for Calstock Arts. \n“She emphasizes her extraordinary talent. SUMMARY:31 March 2023: Levowan XII
DESCRIPTION:Cornwall-based chamber choir\, Levowan XII was established in 2015 by Director\, Marcus Alleyne. Originally eight voices put together to perform a live carol concert for local radio\, they are now 12\, all of whom have a strong musical background and bring a broad range of experience and versatility. The choir performs three main concerts per year and also collaborates with other music ensembles at a variety of events in Devon and Cornwall. \nTheir programme will include the premier of the whole of the Requiem written by Hugh Walkington for the Choir. They will also sing an exciting selection of choral music from across Europe and the USA. In addition\, their accompanist Mark Smith\, who lives in Calstock\, will play a couple of classical solo piano pieces. \nDelivering a vast repertoire covering almost any genre\, including major works\, they perform both a cappella and accompanied by piano\, organ or chamber orchestra. \nLevowan XII also has firm links with both British and international composers and arrangers and has premiered several pieces of their work here in the UK. A highlight has been to perform alongside the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines \nHugh Walkington\, Music Exhibitioner of Cheltenham College\, plays piano\, clarinet and organ. While a teacher at Mount House School in Tavistock\, he directed their SATB Chapel Choir between 2004 and 2014. Hugh likes most styles of music and his favourite orchestral composer is Rachmaninov. He has also sung with the Phoenix Chorale. Hugh is also composer in residence for Levowan XII. \nMark Smith studied piano and organ at Trinity College of Music\, London\, and worked as a professional accompanist in the South East before moving to Cornwall 12 years ago. He now shares his work time between gardening and accompanying.
