DESCRIPTION:Should you care to look back over the past two decades of British folk music\, one musician in particular stands out for having a singular\, idiosyncratic vision that has rarely wavered in style and substance. Jim Moray may have garnered initial attention for his digitally-driven approach to traditional music\, but reflecting on his seven albums and numerous production credits it’s clear that imagination and invention are the real cornerstones of his work. \nThe cinematic vision of albums such as Skulk (2012)\, Upcetera (2016)\, and his game-changing debut Sweet England (2003) show just how far the old songs can be taken. His arrangements of traditional songs such as Gilderoy\, Horkstow Grange and Fair Margaret and Sweet William are regarded as amongst the classics of the folk genre\, while his treatment of the ballad Lord Douglas has become a must-learn for fingerstyle guitarists. \nAs Moray embarks on his third decade as a professional musician\, he can count career-defining performances at Glastonbury\, The Royal Albert Hall\, and WOMAD\, and has caught the attention of those in the know along the way. “I love this singer of old ballads”\, enthused none other than Iggy Pop\, no stranger to songs of love\, life and loss. 20 years in the business also means that his influence is being felt among a younger generation of folk musicians\, especially those who explore the wider canon and ways in which traditional music can be stretched. DESCRIPTION:Listen to interview on Radio Cornwall 1440 on 5th May 2023!! \nThe Oxley-Meier Guitar Project was established ten years ago\, following these two guitarist’s tenure in the unique quartet\, ‘Eclectica!‘ In that decade\, they have recorded 7 albums together\, ranging from duet to quintet formats and have performed literally hundreds of concerts together throughout the UK and Europe. \nThey are joined by Paul Cavaciuti on drums and Ralph Mizraki on bass. \nRegardless of the size of the ensemble\, Oxley & Meier have always maintained their two aims: \n– to write guitar-based music that is exciting\, engaging and fascinating to anybody interested in music. \n– to use an expansive range of instruments in order to deliver a stylistically wide ranging programme. \nTo achieve this\, they usually use ten different guitars at their gigs. DESCRIPTION:It’s commonly accepted that Dublin-born singer and bouzouki player Daoirí Farrell is one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years. \nA product of Dublin’s famous club An Góilin Traditional Singers\, since launching his own solo live career at the 2016 Celtic Connections\, Daoirí Farrell has gone from strength to strength. On the verge of releasing his fourth solo album in early 2023\, he can boast numerous honours from BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards to ALSR Celtic Music accolades. \nHe has received endorsements from the likes of Christy Moore (‘Daoirí has assumed the mantle of Luke [Kelly]’)\, Mark Radcliffe (‘What a voice’) and Dónal Lunny (‘Daoirí is one of the most important traditional singers to emerge in the last decade’)\, with his music and live performances earning the acclaim of respected publications including MOJO\, The Irish Post\, Songlines and more. \n ‘Daoirí Farrell is singlehandedly spearheading a resurgence of the authentic in Irish folk music…he is rightly in demand all over the world.’ Irish Music  \nThe debut album\, ‘The First Turn’\, surfaced back in 2009\, with his breakthrough album appearing in 2016 with the powerful ‘True Born Irishman’\, a set that Songlines called ‘an album that could yet prove to be one of the most significant Irish releases of recent years.’ It went on to win him two prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. \n Following 2019’s ‘A Lifetime Of Happiness’\, which earned three nominations in the RTE Radio 1 Folk Awards and FATEA’s ‘nothing less than a quintessential Irish folk album’ approval\, Daoirí’s long-awaited fourth album\, ‘The Wedding Above In Glencree’\, is set for release in late February 2023. \n Daoirí’s live work sees the 2013 All Ireland Champion Singer touring far and wide\, performing regularly at festivals around the globe including in Canada\, Australia and Europe. SUMMARY:15 April: Laura Lootens - Spain Meets Italy
DESCRIPTION:Laura Lootens is an international music star in the making! \nOnly three months ago\, 23-year-old Laura won the coveted Andrés Segovia Prize\, one of the world’s most important music competitions held annually in Spain. In addition to 1st prize she was also awarded the special prize for the best interpretation of the obligatory work all competitors were asked to perform during the week-long competition. \nLaura is German/Belgian. She discovered her passion for playing the guitar when she was eight years old and made her orchestral debut\, playing Rodrigo’s famous ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ aged 15. A year later she was one of the youngest students ever to begin studying for the Bachelor of Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. \nIn 2019 she won the scholarship of the prestigious German Music Competition open for all instruments\, one of Germany’s highest accolades for a young musician. \nLaura’s concert career took-off following her performance at the Gasteig\, Munich\, in the internationally acclaimed ‘Winners and Masters’ series. That brought her to the attention of German music lovers and since then Laura has appeared at important festivals and concert halls in Germany\, including Bonn’s famous Beethoven Festival and the Sommerliche Musiktage Hitzacker. \nDuring the last two years\, news of Laura’s talent and virtuosity has spread\, and she has received invitations to perform throughout Europe\, including Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw.  As part of her second UK tour\, Laura has generously agreed to perform for Calstock Arts. \n“She emphasizes her extraordinary talent. SUMMARY:31 March 2023: Levowan XII
DESCRIPTION:Cornwall-based chamber choir\, Levowan XII was established in 2015 by Director\, Marcus Alleyne. Originally eight voices put together to perform a live carol concert for local radio\, they are now 12\, all of whom have a strong musical background and bring a broad range of experience and versatility. The choir performs three main concerts per year and also collaborates with other music ensembles at a variety of events in Devon and Cornwall. \nTheir programme will include the premier of the whole of the Requiem written by Hugh Walkington for the Choir. They will also sing an exciting selection of choral music from across Europe and the USA. In addition\, their accompanist Mark Smith\, who lives in Calstock\, will play a couple of classical solo piano pieces. \nDelivering a vast repertoire covering almost any genre\, including major works\, they perform both a cappella and accompanied by piano\, organ or chamber orchestra. \nLevowan XII also has firm links with both British and international composers and arrangers and has premiered several pieces of their work here in the UK. A highlight has been to perform alongside the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines \nHugh Walkington\, Music Exhibitioner of Cheltenham College\, plays piano\, clarinet and organ. While a teacher at Mount House School in Tavistock\, he directed their SATB Chapel Choir between 2004 and 2014. Hugh likes most styles of music and his favourite orchestral composer is Rachmaninov. He has also sung with the Phoenix Chorale. Hugh is also composer in residence for Levowan XII. \nMark Smith studied piano and organ at Trinity College of Music\, London\, and worked as a professional accompanist in the South East before moving to Cornwall 12 years ago. He now shares his work time between gardening and accompanying. Joe has released 8 albums\, 5 of which topped the UK Jazz chart. Joe is also a regular guest and presenter on JazzFM and Radio 3. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as original material. DESCRIPTION:Westcountry folk singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman has announced a run of UK and European solo shows in Spring 2023. This follows on from a busy 2022 including tour dates\, festivals and a run of harbourside performances travelling by ship! \nSeth was part of the ‘Sea Song Sessions’ album – a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties released in September 2022 on Topic Records. Performed by Jon Boden\, Seth\, Ben Nicholls\, Emily Portman and Jack Rutter\, they celebrated the release by sailing into Looe Harbour on the Anny of Charlestown to perform on the Quay. Seth and others then sailed on to perform in Charlestown Harbour and Falmouth. \nSeth Lakeman was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for ‘Kitty Jay’.  It catapulted Lakeman into the forefront of the new British folk movement and his follow up was the gold-selling ‘Freedom Fields’ which was released twice in 2006. Produced by his brother Sean Lakeman it came out on iScream and was then re-released by Relentless (EMI) where it went on to become Seth’s first of 6 UK Top 40 albums. \nTo celebrate the 15th anniversary of Freedom Fields in 2021 Seth played a worldwide online concert stream with his band playing the album (which includes ‘Lady of the Sea’\, ‘King and Country’ and ‘White Hare’) and released a Deluxe Edition of the album on CD & Vinyl with bonus tracks and unreleased demos. Seth released his 11th studio album Make Your Mark in November 2021. He is a wonderful guitar picker and has a lived in\, authentic vocal style\, having learnt first-hand from artists like Bill Munroe\, Doc Watson and Peter Rowan\, all of whom he has spent time with. \nGeorge Nixs is a flamboyant\, virtuoso lead guitar player and his playing lights up a lot of the material the band do. He used to do session work at Abbey Road Studios and counted Peter Green\, Eric Clapton and the Hollies among his musical friends. He played with future AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson\, in a band called Geordie in the 1970s. \nColin Boyd is well known locally as one of the best Bass players around and has a distinctive style all his own. In the past he has famously worked with the Kinks and Lou Reed! \nJeff Horsey played in Exeter based band Junkyard Angels and toured widely\, backing Louisiana Legend Tabby Thomas and playing alongside artists as diverse as Geno Washington\, Peter Green and even Screaming Lord Sutch. He gets to concentrate on his singing and Harmonica playing but also plays some Slide Guitar. \nTogether they perform funky versions of well-known blues covers\, lesser known songs you wished you had heard before and a few original numbers\, all blending into an exciting\, highly listenable gumbo with lots of harmony singing giving them a special edge. Tunes include Spiderman\, When You Wish Upon A Star\, The Pink Panther\, The Flintstones\, Some Day My Prince Will Come\, Alice In Wonderland\, Sesame Street\, You’ve Got A Friend in Me\, Let It Go\, Give A Little Whistle and many more. \nThe Neil Maya Quartet is one of the Southwest’s finest jazz outfits and has toured extensively throughout the region and beyond over the last 20 years. The quartet first played for Villages in Action back in 2005 and shortly afterwards recorded its first album\, out of the woodshed in 2006. The second album Bread and Circuses followed soon after in 2009. The quartet launched its highly successful Brubeck Project in 2016 recording a live album in Devon’s own Meavy Village Hall whilst at a Villages in Action gig in 2017. DESCRIPTION:Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an Anglo-Scottish duo who formed in 2017\, after discovering a shared love of traditional music. \nThey find their songs in archives that span the depths of our history; songs that\, regardless of age\, tell vivid stories about the nature of life\, from the ethereal landscapes of ancient ballads to the urban rhythms of work songs. Their compelling storytelling comes alive through tight vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin and bouzouki\, with arrangements that balance intricacy with energy. Their dynamic performances are a celebration of their own musical and geographic backgrounds\, embracing the differences that connect them. \nThe duo met whilst studying folk and traditional music at Newcastle University\, spending one year at the University of South-East Norway together. These experiences allowed them to hone their craft whilst expanding their audiences further beyond the UK. After three years of working together and performing in notable venues such as Sage Gateshead and Folklub Newcastle\, they decided to record their debut EP. SUMMARY:4 November: Windjammer
DESCRIPTION:Windjammer are a trio who cast timeless stories in a context of their own making. They blend self-penned songs and instrumentals with original\, genre-bending arrangements of music drawn from the traditions of British folk. Turning unflinchingly from soft\, delicate emphasis to shoulder-rolling grind\, and from light harmonies to prog-infused instrumentalism\, they have a habit of keeping audiences surprised and engaged with ever-changing soundscapes. Their debut album\, ‘Awaken’ (produced by Sean Lakeman)\, showcases and expands this palette in a studio context. \nThe band\, comprised of Jake Sonny Rowlinson\, Jeremy Bunting and Fran Rowney\, formed around the folk and acoustic music scene in Plymouth\, where they maintain a strong local presence. Jake and Fran met in 2014 at folk sessions in Plymouth’s famous Dolphin Inn\, where they became firm friends and developed a short-lived duo. During this time\, Jeremy was performing as a solo act and the three met whilst performing at the same venues around Plymouth. The three rapidly became friends and collaborators\, forming Windjammer in 2015. \nWith an ever-growing fan base and a distinctive\, uncompromisingly original approach to their craft\, the trio are generating real momentum.
