SUMMARY:23 September: Gallery Bar Special - Louise Parker Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Plymouth based jazz & soul singer Louise Parker\, joined by her band\, Neil Burns (guitar)\, Jem Fatna (drums) and Pasquale Votino (bass) return to the Old Chapel this autumn. \nLouise Parker  \nLouise  started singing late\, but soon found out she had a feel for jazz. Her father had an extensive record collection\, many Blue Note albums\, ranging from Bix Beiderbecke all the way through each decade to John Coltrane. Her mother was very keen on Opera and folk music. \nMusic was always in the background in the family home. \nLouise has played in Pizza Express Dean Street\, Pizza on the Park\, The Bull’s Head\, Barnes and The Hammersmith Apollo. She has also toured extensively\, and played many festivals – including Glastonbury\, jazz festivals\, and theatres in the UK. The Hammersmith Apollo was a memorial concert in tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton who she  recorded with in 2008. She was the last singer to record with him at his studio in London – “Cornucopia 3” \nIn addition to Humphrey Lyttelton\, Louise has played and recorded with Dave Newton\, Alan Barnes (No More Strangers)\, Steve Waterman\, Max Turnbull (Don’t Explain)\, George Cooper and Matt Carter. \nJem Fatna \nJean Emmanuel Fatna raised in Martinique and French Guiana\, is a self taught drummer and percussionist. Born into a long line of musicians\, he began playing at the age of 2. Spiritually nurtured by the arts\, for him music is a gift and through grace is transmitted. His sound and approach to music have been influenced by his Afro-Caribbean and Amazonian heritage\, as well as his time living and playing music in New York. \nExperienced in various styles – reggae\, hip hop\, funk\, jazz\, world music- he performs live shows and collaborates in studio sessions with a rich and diverse mix of artists including Myles Sanko\, Kuku\, Winston Francis\, Sparky in The Clouds\, Dub Judah\, Urban Twoubadoo\, Daryll Hall trio\, Alain Jean-Marie\, Mariann Matheus\, David Cairol\, Nish Wadada. Jem has performed at venues like: Olympia\, Zénith\, Royal Opera House etc \nNeil Burns \nScottish Guitarist Neil Burns has been immersed in the south west jazz scene for many years. He has performed all over Europe and is a regular calibrator of top trumpeter Steve Waterman\, Guitar legend Jim Mullen\, vibraphonist Roger Beaujolais and has also worked with Jacqui Dankworth\, Zoe Rahman \, Simon Spillett\, Dave Newton\, Mark Bassey \, Bobby Wellins\, Greg Abate and The Haggis Horns\, to name a few. \nA melodic guitarist steeped in the jazz guitar tradition. \nPasquale Votino \nPasquale was born in Naples and studied Classical Music under Rino Zurzolo at Benevento Conservatory\, before moving to UK. From a young age he developed a passion for jazz\, alongside classical music. Four fine musicians whose roots are firmly in the traditional English genre\, but who enjoy stretching the limits – in what a lot of people refer to as ‘the quirky Banter twist”.  Formed in 2015\, due to a happy accident\, they immediately realised their common love for traditional English song and dance and began to mess around with it. \nThey gained popularity\, or should it be notoriety\, very quickly and were soon performing at many of the country’s largest festivals\, including Glastonbury\, Cambridge FF\, Sidmouth FF and Towersey. \nWith the release of two albums\, YES and DARE\, between 2017 and 2019\, they received more plaudits in the music press including a Valentines day session on Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 Folk Show. \nNow firmly established as one of the UK’s finest bands they have recorded their third studio album “Three”. SUMMARY:17 September- Meridianum Ensemble @ 1515
DESCRIPTION:The Meridianum Ensemble is a unique musical collaboration\, bringing together top players from Portugal\, the UK and Morocco. The six musicians bring their individual styles and influences to the mix\, inspired by traditions from Iran and the Eastern Mediterranean to Portugal\, Scandinavia and beyond. Modal music\, improvisation and virtuosity are a feature of their gloriously entrancing infusion. Featuring traditional and original repertoire for Arabic oud\, Middle Eastern percussion\, cittern\, Persian Santur\, Swedish nyckelharpa and the mediaeval sounds of the hurdy-gurdy\, this blend is a sonic and visual treat. \nFounded in 2018 by UK-based Portuguese percussionist Ricardo de Noronha\, the idea was to draw his collaborators into one ensemble. Santur player Nuno Silva (the only non-UK member) resides in Porto and previously worked with Ricardo in several groups\, especially on the mediaeval scene in Portugal. In 2019 Nuno studied the santur in Iran. Through his interest in mediaeval music Ricardo met top UK hurdy-gurdy player Steve Tyler\, renowned for his rhythmic and inventive style. Expect self-written and West Country songs\, rattling folk tunes and foot-stomping ragtime and cakewalk  riffs. \nRob’s percussive finger-ballet up and down the fret board of his 100 year-old instrument is mesmerising. He’s revered throughout the UK for his long-time work with the renowned Dartmoor Pixie Band and The Watch trio. \nAfter 50 years as a journalist\, music-loving Geoff recorded his debut CD \,”After All These Years” at the age of  69\, which garnered four and five-star reviews and national radio airplay. SUMMARY:25 June: Wang-Luft-Fält Trio
DESCRIPTION:Having played together on a number of dates in Europe\, including at the prestigious Molde Jazz Festival\, this will be the Trio’s first ever UK tour – definitely not to be missed! \nBassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang has been a powerful force in Jazz and beyond\, distinguishing herself as a truly inventive artist that blends styles in unprecedented ways. From collaboration with Sting\, Manu Katché and Marilyn Mazur\, performances at major Jazz Festivals\,  appearance with the vocal Jazz Group GURLS\, to her own projects Pixel and the Ellen Andrea Wang Trio. \nWang has consistently sought to tastefully blend Jazz and Pop in new ways. Her compositions and performance balance the lyrical with the rough\, the acoustic with the electric\, resulting in a unique modern sound. \nHer third studio album- Closeness (Ropeadope 2020)\, features Wang on double bass and vocals\, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on drums. The album is an adventurous mix of traditional spirituals\, soothing in their delivery\, longing and personal compositions\, and two carefully selected covers from Ornette Coleman (Lonely Woman) and Pat Metheny (This Is Not America). The connection between the musicians is quite evident as they approach each song with patience and absolute care for the art. \nA commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in\, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass\, interlocking with drummers\, jazz\, pop and groove alike.  The Guardian \n  \nUK guitarist Rob Luft has seamlessly moved from being a ‘star of the future’ ( BBC ‘New Generation Artist’)\, to an undoubted star of the here and now!  In addition to two tremendous albums released under his own name on Edition Records (with a third one due in 2023)\, he has electrified audiences with collaborations alongside some of the finest musicians around\, including releasing acclaimed albums with Dave O’Higgins\, Alice Zawadzki\, Elina Duni (on the legendary ECM label) and most recently with master musician John Surman\, due for release in 2023. \n  \nSwedish drummer Jon Fält has played and recorded with many legends of the jazz world such as Palle Danielsson\, Fredrick Nordstrom\, Bobo Stenson (on ECM) and Fredrik Ljungkvist. SUMMARY:23 June: Burd Ellen
DESCRIPTION:Burd Ellen is a project featuring Debbie Armour (Alasdair Roberts\, Green Ribbons) and Gayle Brogan (Pefkin\, Electroscope). The group uses traditional song to explore and evoke dark landscapes and deep stories. Innovative instrumentation\, drone and sound-wash support detailed vocal work to create a unique sonic atmosphere. \nThey self-released their debut album Silver Came in 2019. Their second album\, Says The Never Beyond\, is a collection of carols and wintersong that occupy the liminal space between sacred and secular\, connecting to the deep seasonal traditions of Britain and Ireland. The record was critically well received\, finding its spot in the top 10 of 2020 for many publications including The Guardian and Folk Radio UK. \nA Tarot Of The Green Wood is their third studio album\, released Oct 2022. Debbie Armour says “I’m a long time collector and lover of tarot\, and I’ve recently become drawn to the idea of finding parallels between interpretation of traditional song and the art of divination. Gayle and I have brought together a new collection of songs that reflect the ideas\, archetypes and imagery of the Major Arcana.” Developed on residency at Sage Gateshead\, the album also features guest appearances from Irish piper Ian Lynch (Fire Draw Near\, Lankum) and Newcastle-based composer Mark Wardlaw (Kenosist\, The Old Police House) \nBurd Ellen have appeared at Cambridge Folk Festival\, Celtic Connections\, Fanø Free Folk Festival\, Cafe Oto\, The Glad Cafe and many other stages in the UK and Europe. DESCRIPTION:UK Blues Awards 2023 Winner – Best Acoustic Blues Act\n‘Howling Wolf meets Screaming Jay Hawkins…carried on the wings of wailing slide guitar’  Richard Wall – Blues in Britain \nSince first coming to prominence as one half of the multi-award-winning band ‘Babajack’\, Trevor Babajack Steger has established himself as a highly sought-after performer on the British Blues and Roots scene. His travels have taken him the length of the UK\, across Europe and Africa\, headlining Blues and Roots festivals\, and from little French cafés to The Royal Albert Hall. \nTrevor’s music is influenced by his passion for early rural Blues\, mixed with the sounds of rhythmic African roots\, in what can only be described as his own genre of original and seemingly improvised music\, that makes him a thrilling and unique artist.  He has an immediacy and charisma that draws you close to the music\, demanding your attention. His haunting voice\, style of slide guitar and harp playing has earnt him recognition in The UK Blues Awards\, The British Blues Awards and Blues & Roots Radio Awards as one of Britain’s best harmonica players and acoustic Blues artists. \nAs well as playing songs from his back catalogue\, Trevor will be performing music from his recently released album ‘Not Far To Go’. This is a new collection of self-penned\, original songs reflecting on life\, lust and disappointment\, which will make you perhaps laugh out loud\, simply cry but certainly tap your feet. He will be accompanied by deliciously soaring violin playing from Jo Chambers and the energetic and driving percussion of Jesse Benns\, enhancing the overall sound in a subtle but effective way. DESCRIPTION:Laura Lootens is an international music star in the making! \nOnly three months ago\, 23-year-old Laura won the coveted Andrés Segovia Prize\, one of the world’s most important music competitions held annually in Spain. In addition to 1st prize she was also awarded the special prize for the best interpretation of the obligatory work all competitors were asked to perform during the week-long competition. \nLaura is German/Belgian. She discovered her passion for playing the guitar when she was eight years old and made her orchestral debut\, playing Rodrigo’s famous ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ aged 15. A year later she was one of the youngest students ever to begin studying for the Bachelor of Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich. \nIn 2019 she won the scholarship of the prestigious German Music Competition open for all instruments\, one of Germany’s highest accolades for a young musician. \nLaura’s concert career took-off following her performance at the Gasteig\, Munich\, in the internationally acclaimed ‘Winners and Masters’ series. DESCRIPTION:Cornwall-based chamber choir\, Levowan XII was established in 2015 by Director\, Marcus Alleyne. Originally eight voices put together to perform a live carol concert for local radio\, they are now 12\, all of whom have a strong musical background and bring a broad range of experience and versatility. The choir performs three main concerts per year and also collaborates with other music ensembles at a variety of events in Devon and Cornwall. \nTheir programme will include the premier of the whole of the Requiem written by Hugh Walkington for the Choir. They will also sing an exciting selection of choral music from across Europe and the USA. In addition\, their accompanist Mark Smith\, who lives in Calstock\, will play a couple of classical solo piano pieces. \nDelivering a vast repertoire covering almost any genre\, including major works\, they perform both a cappella and accompanied by piano\, organ or chamber orchestra. \nLevowan XII also has firm links with both British and international composers and arrangers and has premiered several pieces of their work here in the UK. A highlight has been to perform alongside the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines \nHugh Walkington\, Music Exhibitioner of Cheltenham College\, plays piano\, clarinet and organ. While a teacher at Mount House School in Tavistock\, he directed their SATB Chapel Choir between 2004 and 2014. Hugh likes most styles of music and his favourite orchestral composer is Rachmaninov. He has also sung with the Phoenix Chorale. Hugh is also composer in residence for Levowan XII. \nMark Smith studied piano and organ at Trinity College of Music\, London\, and worked as a professional accompanist in the South East before moving to Cornwall 12 years ago. DESCRIPTION:Americana folk roots music with virtuoso presentation\, with a touch of clean comedy thrown in for good measure. \nThe Texas-born troubadour who learned to play in Austin\, perform in Los Angeles\, craft songs in Nashville\, and put it all together in London has played all types of music in all types of venues in his storied career. DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Co-operative Big Band\, formed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils  by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing at The Old Chapel as a fund raiser towards a new stage at the Old Chapel. \nThe Cooperative Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. \nThe band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman\, who play regularly with the band\, has created an emulation model for the players. \nNow led by Gav Martin\, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service\, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! \nThey have an extensive repertoire of swing\, funk\, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements. DESCRIPTION:“Versatile contemporary jazz and fusion saxophonist / multi-instrumentalist / composer plays diverse originals all laced with her own bluesy\, expressive sax work.”  Time Out – London \nSince winning the ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at the Marlborough Jazz Festival\, the Charlotte Glasson Band have been wowing audiences at venues across the U.K.\, including the London Jazz Festival\, Love Supreme Festival and Pizza Express Live (Soho).  The band\, led by Charlotte a multi-instrumentalist and composer\, play mainly original music\, specialising in weaving together sounds from across the globe to create a brand of music defined by rhythm and melody\, a world of bird call and sunshine. \nStylistically\, Charlotte’s compositions draw on Latin rhythms\, New Orleans Mardi Gras\, Swing\, Arabic\, Spaghetti Western and Gypsy Jazz influences\, sensitively combined into something uniquely her own\, upbeat and bouncy on the surface but with interesting twists and turns as a sub-text. SUMMARY:3 March 2023: The Countrymen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate St Piran’s weekend at Calstock Arts. Returning to the Old Chapel\, with their ‘Cornish Folk Rock Harmony’\, The Countrymen are five local seasoned musicians from Launceston\, with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. \nWith a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall\, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs\, as well as original material. DESCRIPTION:Westcountry folk singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman has announced a run of UK and European solo shows in Spring 2023. This follows on from a busy 2022 including tour dates\, festivals and a run of harbourside performances travelling by ship! \nSeth was part of the ‘Sea Song Sessions’ album – a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties released in September 2022 on Topic Records. Performed by Jon Boden\, Seth\, Ben Nicholls\, Emily Portman and Jack Rutter\, they celebrated the release by sailing into Looe Harbour on the Anny of Charlestown to perform on the Quay. Seth and others then sailed on to perform in Charlestown Harbour and Falmouth. \nSeth Lakeman was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for ‘Kitty Jay’.  It catapulted Lakeman into the forefront of the new British folk movement and his follow up was the gold-selling ‘Freedom Fields’ which was released twice in 2006. Produced by his brother Sean Lakeman it came out on iScream and was then re-released by Relentless (EMI) where it went on to become Seth’s first of 6 UK Top 40 albums. \nTo celebrate the 15th anniversary of Freedom Fields in 2021 Seth played a worldwide online concert stream with his band playing the album (which includes ‘Lady of the Sea’\, ‘King and Country’ and ‘White Hare’) and released a Deluxe Edition of the album on CD & Vinyl with bonus tracks and unreleased demos. Seth released his 11th studio album Make Your Mark in November 2021.
