SUMMARY:23 July: Blue - Joni Mitchell Sung by Mae Karthauser
DESCRIPTION:Songwriter Mae Karthauser is lending her voice to a breathtaking new live performance: a heart wrenching tribute to Joni Mitchell’s seminal album Blue. \n“I was utterly blown away… an absolute emotional rollercoaster..magical” Amy \n“In all my years I have never cried at a gig. I was crying on the first song” Martin \nMae will be performing the entire Blue album\, plus nine other Joni favourites from her early songwriting era. \nMae\, who has performed at Glastonbury Festival\, on prime-time BBC1 and on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 6\, identified Joni Mitchell as the first and most influential songwriter she discovered as a teenager\, and was called to delve into recreating the album as a live performance when approached by friend and guitarist Rowland O’Connor at the end of a gig back in 2025. “Who’s album would you most like to recreate?” he asked. Unprompted\, they both came up with the same answer. \n“Joni Mitchell’s songs feel like dreams\, like journeys off somewhere deep and familiar” says Mae. “It’s great to go beyond memorising and really into the magic\, the poetry and the stunning emotional landscapes Joni is able to conjure with her songwriting” \nBreathing new life into the 1971 classic\, Mae’s silken and athletic vocals soar nimbly over Joni’s melodies\, and paired with her expressive piano playing she brings a raw and living presence to these timeless songs. Mae is joined by regular collaborators Rowland O’Connor on guitar\, bass and Appalacian dulcimer\, Ric Byer on drums and Tess Broach on backing vocals. \n<https://youtu.be/d5ZfcJB2_mQ>

The Terraplanes have a real swagger…a natural chemistry and feel for the blues genre” \n– Colin Campbell\, Blues Matters Magazine \nHailing from Bristol\, UK\, The Terraplanes are an authentic Rhythm & Blues Band\, with a sound echoing the 1960’s British R’n’B invasion with a heavy dose of Delta Country Blues.  \nThe Terraplanes formed in 2013 when singer Nick Scrase met Eduardo Allen in Bristol\, the relationship between the two founding members is the driving force of the band. \nScrase’ authentic vocal tones and slick guitar plus the harmonica skills and hi energy stage perfomances from Eduardo Allen make for an electric live show. They are ably supported by the rhythm section of Karl Anthony (drums) & Craig Shaw (Bass). \nThe Terraplanes have been a breath of fresh air on the British blues scene since the release of their debut E.P Midnight Train in 2020 and their first full studio album Stepping Stones in 2022\, \nIn 2023 The Terraplanes were nominated for Emerging Act Of The Year at The UK Blues Awards  \nAn award they eventually won which was a hugely proud moment for an independent band with no label or management.  \nThe band then appeared at The UK Blues Challenge\, selected as one of five of the best UK blues bands. \nThese achievements allowed the band to appear at some of the UK’s premier blues clubs and festivals including Upton Blues Festival\, Callander Jazz & Blues Festival\, Scotland and an incredible headline show at London’s iconic 100 club. Shows at other legendary venues such as EEL PIE Club and The Crawdaddy Club\, Richmond are already scheduled for 2026. \nHaving released a live album in November 2024 which hit #4 in the UK IBBA Blues Chart. This made the band a 3 time top 5 UK IBBA artist which is a great achievement for an independent band. \nThe Terraplanes are now busy writing songs for a new album\, the band are very excited to get out on the road to try out this fantastic new material on some blues loving festival crowds. \nThe Terraplanes have been shortlisted as one of the top 20 UK blues bands for the fourth year in a row ahead of the 2026 UK Blues Awards. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Cole Stacey is a visceral and lyrical songwriter\, singer and musician whose versatility as a performer has taken him from The Royal Albert Hall to a 14th century castle in Gdansk. \nFrom Manchester Central Library to The Westfalenhalle Arena\, from festivals in Johannesburg to live sessions on BBC Radio 5 Live. \nWith more than a decade-long association with Midge Ure and India Electric Company he has roamed the highest echelons of British folk through to 80s synth pop. \n“He is incredible”\n– Times Radio \nOften using unique places as part of his creative framework\, Cole records and performs in remarkable spaces\, from medieval jailhouses and Victorian clay factories  treating buildings as collaborators rather than backdrops. His music grounds listeners in timeless sound and emotion\, inviting reflection\, connection\, and a sense of continuity with what endures. \n“Breathtaking\, that incredible voice” – TradFolk \nHis first solo offerings\, including an acoustic re-imagining of Fade To Grey\, catapulted him to the Top 10 in the UK Charts and to numerous sold-out shows in unique locations.  Hailing from a small Devonshire village that is tricky to pronounce\, Cole’s extraordinarily broad musical horizons continue to expand\, but his work is firmly rooted in exploring shared human experience – how words\, stories and songs resonate across time. \nWebsite www.colestacey.net \nFacebook https://www.facebook.com/ThisColeStacey/\nInstagram https://www.instagram.com/thiscolestacey \nX https://x.com/thiscolestacey\nYou Tube https://www.youtube.com/colestacey\nSpotify https://spoti.fi/3xzEY5a\nTikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@thecolestacey\nEmail: contact@colestacey.net \nWatch/Listen: Cole Stacey – Quiet Is Louder (official video)\nWatch/Listen: Cole Stacey (feat. SUMMARY:11 October: Lantivet Duo
DESCRIPTION:The Lantivet Duo is Cornish violinist Anna Brigham and Scottish pianist Brendan Musk. They bring a fresh\, contemporary approach to the violin and piano duo\, combining excellence in performing traditional repertoire with writing their own music. At the heart of their collaboration is the desire to explore. Their roots in classical\, folk\, jazz\, pop and funk music combined with boundless creativity have earned them critical acclaim\, with Classic FM hailing them as “one of the best things to see.” Together\, they captivate audiences with a spellbinding blend of traditional and original pieces. \nTheir exceptional programming is completely unique and has been described as “genuinely original and exploratory”. The duo take a concept or a classical work and explode it outwards\, exploring deep into what inspired the composer and using it as inspiration for their own music. Contemporary folk traditions\, family life\, environment\, personal obsessions – there are so many influences in any composer’s work. Using this as a jumping off point\, the duo write their own music and arrange traditional folk tunes\, which when paired with the classical work\, reflects back to create a deeper\, richer experience of the piece. \nIndividually\, Anna and Brendan have thriving freelance careers. They perform with world-class orchestras\, chamber groups\, and artists such as the Philharmonia\, Dunedin Consort\, and Bjork\, have headlined at prestigious festivals\, and appeared at venues like the Royal Albert Hall\, the Wigmore Hall\, and Ronnie Scotts. As a duo\, they have delighted audiences throughout the UK and performed for the Spanish Embassy. Outside of the concert hall\, they are particularly proud of their Summer Garden Concert Series\, now in its fourth year\, which brings music to intimate and unique settings. They are very excited to have released their debut album in 2025. \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/vT53Fjap7h4

SUMMARY:8 November: Budapest Cafe Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are thrilled to welcome back the Budapest Cafe Orchestra to the Old Chapel \nIn 2009 Christian Garrick established the refreshingly unconventional and snappily attired Budapest Café Orchestra (BCO) with the intention to present a broad range of music from all over the world in the most entertaining and fun way.  BCO perform all their music from memory. Combined their trademark wit and charm\, audiences are left tingling with warmth\, delight and amazement. \nBCO are one of the very busiest acoustic groups for me today playing an average of 75 shows per annum.  Since their inception they have recorded one album every year and in January 2025 made their 16th waxing Goulash Supernova.  BCO are frequent guests to BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. \n“Not so much a band name as a whole genre of its own\, Budapest Café Orchestra embraces an encyclopaedia of music and mischief.”  SCOTSMAN \n“Your music is really great.” Helena Bonham Carter \n“The music is magic in their hands.”  Sean Rafferty BBC Radio 3 \n“Absolutely acoustically electrifying!”  Time Out \nwebsite http://www.budapestcafeorchestra.co.uk \nfacebook https://www.facebook.com/budapestcafeorchestra \ntwitter https://twitter.com/bco100

SUMMARY:15 November: Elizabeth Jane Baldry
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome the return of the highly accomplished local harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry\, for what will be an enchanting concert. As a recitalist\, she is well-known for her warm and approachable presentation style. The Bath Chronicle said of her: “It is hard to say just which was more pleasurable – the exquisite playing or the often deliciously outrageous stories of composers’ lives that Elizabeth Jane recounted in between the music.” She performs both nationally and internationally\, giving around eighty performances a year from recitals in historic houses or specialist arts cruises to weddings and funerals. She has performed to sold-out audiences in the USA\, Italy and France. \nElizabeth-Jane fell in love with the harp as a little girl whilst reading fairy-tales in which the harp possessed magical powers! She grew up to study at Exeter University and the Royal College of Music\, and has been a full-time professional musician for over thirty years. As well as performing recitals\, she is the only specialist silent movie harpist in the world\, playing live to cinema screenings of early film\, and has won multiple awards for her silent film accompaniments and compositions. Her uniquely rich tone on the harp has graced film and TV soundtracks screened in over thirty countries including Canada\, Iceland\, Kenya\, Iran and South Africa. Her compositions have been used by ITV\, the BBC and by Irish\, Japanese\, Danish and Canadian film\, radio and television. \nA life-long lover of nature\, Elizabeth-Jane lives in the Dartmoor National Park. In her spare time\, she loves growing trees and creating a magical woodland where she can brew tea in a twig kettle\, keep bees and listen to birdsong. Sometimes she gets up on Sunday mornings early enough to sing in the church choir. Her tiny granite cottage is full of music\, books and harps\, and the kettle is always on for friends. \n“She is a great artist and consummate performer. She can draw more tone colours out of the instrument than any other harpist living in the world today.” David Watkins\, Professor of Harp\, Guildhall School of Music \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/XgcPT3ZR2JM?si=7pNtngm_kCm4qZyH

SUMMARY:6 December: Musica Medievalis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical afternoon and experience the rich tapestry of music that filled the air centuries ago\, from haunting melodies to lively dances. Marco Cannavo\, Steve Tyler and Katy Marchant present an instrumental journey into the music of medieval Europe\, spanning the 12th to 15th centuries. Featuring historical musical instruments such as hurdy-gurdy and its early predecessors\, bagpipes\, harp\, lute\, citole\, portative organ\, and percussions\, the concert explores rhythms and melodies from both sacred and secular traditions\, interpreted with imaginative freedom while remaining rooted in historical sources. Much of the music would have been heard in churches during Christmas and other religious celebrations\, while the livelier tunes would have been played at seasonal gatherings and communal festivities. Harken thou to the melody! \nMarco Cannavò is a hurdy-gurdy player and multi-instrumentalist dedicated to medieval and traditional music. Having studied with and mentored by Steve Tyler they now collaborate on projects exploring the music of medieval Europe with performances throughout the UK. Deeply connected to his Southern Italian heritage\, the tambourine holds a central place in Marco’s musical identity and in the traditions of Southern Italy. \nSteve Tyler is a renowned hurdy-gurdy player. For many years a performer of medieval music\, his main interest is in patterns and rhythms and the resulting interweaving of different instruments\, inspired by patterns in nature\, mathematics and the imagination. He has performed with such diverse artists as English folk singer Jackie Oates\, German industrial/electronic musician F.M. Einheit and South African puppeteer John Roberts. \nKaty Marchant is a musician and mask maker and was the founder and director of ‘Daughters of Elvin: A Medieval Music and Dance Theatre Company’. In 2012 Katy and Steve formed the band Woodwose\, a quartet specialising in medieval music and balfolk\, and writing their own compositions for bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. With Steve\, Katy has performed throughout Britain\, Ireland\, Europe and Scandinavia. \nPre-Concert Workshop: 11:00AM \nPrior to the afternoon concert why not join Marco\, Steve and Katy for an interactive and family-friendly Medieval Music Workshop at the Old Chapel! \nIn this relaxed session\, get up close and personal with a range of beautiful medieval instruments that will feature in the afternoon concert. Learn how their unique sounds are produced and how they were played in medieval times. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and see the instruments up close. For those interested\, some of the instruments may be available to try out under supervision (though not all instruments can be handled). This workshop is perfect for everyone\, including families (children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian). School groups are warmly invited to join. A wonderful way to dive into medieval music and explore its rich sounds and traditions before going to the afternoon concert. Come and enjoy this unique experience! \nTicket prices for the workshop together with the ticket link will be added soon \nHave a listen: \nhttps://youtu.be/JyqKrJ9mtG0?si=BRpNfk08KrGU3zX9 \nhttps://youtu.be/YbkNIvEC7vg?si=1VyHtnX7_q28ueBj

SUMMARY:23 January: Sarah McQuaid
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter in a tradition that spans cultures and genres with peerless musicianship. \nSarah McQuaid’s lush\, velvety voice combines with her engaging personality and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars\, keyboards and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience. Her live performances are full of warmth\, wit\, and intimacy\, and have earned her loyal followings on both sides of the Atlantic.  \nBorn in Spain\, raised in Chicago\, holding dual Irish and American citizenship and now settled in rural England\, she brings the eclecticism of her background to her “captivating\, unorthodox songwriting” (PopMatters) and choice of material. From contemplative ballads to playful blues to atmospheric instrumentals\, Sarah’s music invites reflection\, connection\, and a deep appreciation of the quiet power of a well-crafted song. \nIn the words of one audience member: “Sarah is a truly impressive artist who takes you on a journey through storytelling\, blending a variety of musical genres and instruments with ease and creativity. Her lyrics are down-to-earth yet incredibly captivating. Attending her concert feels like diving into a book of short stories — some resonate deeply\, some spark your imagination\, others make you pause and reflect\, and a few bring tears or spontaneous laughter. Sarah’s connection with the audience is both gentle and profound. You don’t  just watch a performance — you become part of it\, part of the story she’s telling. … To anyone considering seeing her live: go. It’s worth every second. You’ll leave with your heart full and your soul touched — guaranteed.”
