SUMMARY:13 June: Eastern Strings - The fourth & last of our festival of Four World Music Concerts
DESCRIPTION:The fourth concert in the Festival of World Music is a celebration of the sounds of the Middle East. We welcome the Bristol-based duo Eastern Strings of Daphna Sadeh-Neu (double bass) and Knud Stüwe (oud) for their first performance at the Old Chapel. Their instrumental music is distinctive and exquisite\, drawing together a tapestry of musical culture from across the Middle East and their performances combine world music energy with classical precision and characterful improvisations. They will be joined by special guest\, Özcan Ateş\, vocalist and master of the ear-catching traditional bağlama\, a seven-stringed\, long-necked lute central to Turkish and Kurdish folk traditions. His playing is intense and musically enriching and his vocals are lyrical\, emotional and poignant. The trio’s performances of an eclectic mix of Kurdish\, Turkish\, Ladino and Middle Eastern traditional songs and music have been described as visceral\, evocative and full of surprise. Immerse yourself in these sumptuous worldly musical delights expertly plucked and sung by the ensemble in this\, the finale of Calstock Arts’ journey around ‘Our Music Planet’. \nHave a listen: https://youtu.be/2wY87UTTQGo?si=9jE7EwltDVCOefSt \nMiddle Eastern music refers to the music of the various countries and cultures in the Middle East region\, including countries such as Egypt\, Turkey\, Iran\, Lebanon\, amongst many others. It is a diverse and rich musical tradition that has been influenced by various cultures and civilisations throughout history. The music is known for its unique scales\, rhythms\, and instruments. One of its most distinctive features is the use of maqamat (‘ascents’)\, melodic modes or scales that are used as the basis for composition and improvisation. Middle Eastern music has evolved over time and has become globally more accessible via digital platforms\, but despite external influences it continues to be a vibrant and dynamic musical tradition that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region. \n  \nAl Swainger  With more than three decades of performing experience\, Al Swainger has appeared on stages from Ronnie Scott’s and the Royal Albert Hall to festivals including Love Supreme\, the London Jazz Festival and Krakow Jazz Festival. His work spans jazz\, improvised music and cross-genre collaboration with ensembles and artists across the UK and internationally \nKnud Stüwe is a musician\, composer and arranger and is fast establishing himself as a unique and brilliant voice on the oud. He draws inspiration from a wide range of influences such as Middle Eastern music\, Jazz\, Tango and the Classical repertoire. Recent projects include ‘Sounds of Sudan’ a collaboration between the oud duo Nabra and the Ligeti String quartet and a WNO songwriting project with refugees. He is also the musical director of the Bristol Mandolin and Guitar ensemble\, an enthusiastic amateur plucked string orchestra. \nÖzcan Ateş was born in Istanbul and started playing the bağlama at a young age. While his musical journey began in Turkey\, he has become more active since settling in Bristol. He is a rare master of the bağlama\, performing traditional Turkish and Kurdish folk songs as well as his own compositions across the UK. Music is his way of expressing emotions\, telling stories\, and preserving culture. He believes in its power to connect people and strives to blend tradition with modern influences. He is a unique voice in the UK’s world music landscape. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The third concert of ‘Our Music Planet’ Festival is a celebration of the music from Senegal\, West Africa. We welcome the highly lauded Master Kora player\, Diabel Cissokho for his first performance at Calstock Arts. Diabel will be accompanied by Joff Watkins on harmonica and Seydou Kienou on percussion. \nDiabel Cissokho is fiercely proud of his Mandinka heritage and Senegalese roots\, coming from a great line of Cissokho Griots. Not just musicians\, griots are performers\, historians\, messengers\, and custodians of oral traditions. To be a griot is a significant honour\, a role that carries the weight of history and tradition\, entrusted with the responsibility of preserving and transmitting oral histories across generations. Diabel is a passionate promoter and protector of griot culture and of the 21-stringed Kora\, the iconic instrument in griot musical traditions\, and synonymous with the sound of West African music. SUMMARY:22 February: Divertimento String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back the Divertimento String Quartet who last performed at Calstock Arts in 2023. Based in Devon\, the quartet is one of South West England’s foremost string quartets\, with a large following for their regular concert series. The afternoon concert will include: Fritz Kreisler’s String Quartet in A minor and Schumann’s String Quartet in A.   \nAcclaimed for giving performances of such polished professionalism combined with a real sense of intimacy and pleasure\, one of the many good reasons for attending their concerts is the careful and interesting choice of programming. Their pleasure and enjoyment in playing communicates immediately with their audience –  the attentive listening to each other\, the way individual instruments shine out where necessary and blend\, support and work together throughout all add to the richness of the music. For pieces both familiar and unfamiliar the players introduce the music so that the listening is enhanced by entertaining explanations and/or short extracts. \n ‘If anyone has a friend who might be interested in chamber music but feels a bit intimidated by it\, Divertimento is the ideal group to take them to; they’ll hook them in gently and with the utmost charm\, and open up a whole new world of delight!’  Come along and bring a friend! \nHere is a taster: https://youtu.be/Sx9697Jph1o?si=DfkvS0onKst9nNSt \nMary Eade (violin) studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School before student life took her to Freiburg\, Germany\, later returning to the Royal College of Music\, London. She gave her Wigmore Hall debut in 1975 and has played many concertos most notably with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, the English Chamber Orchestra\, London Festival Orchestra\, Tallis Chamber Orchestra. \nLindsay Braga (violin) studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Richard Deakin and Wen Zu Li. Since then she has worked with many orchestras including: BBC Philharmonic Orchestra\, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra\, Welsh National Opera\, English National Ballet\, Goldberg Ensemble\, Manchester Camerata. \nAndrew Gillett (viola) studied at the Royal College of Music and the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt\, Germany. In demand as a freelance chamber and orchestral musician\, his musical interests are diverse – baroque\, contemporary and all things in between\, – sometimes he’s found at ceilidhs\, playing fiddle long into the night. \nVicky Evans (cello) early studies were at the Royal College of Music Junior Department and then at the Purcell School before continuing her training at Dartington College of Arts. She has a busy career as a freelance musician – as a cello continuo player and chamber musician\, and as manager of several chamber ensembles and orchestras\, and Director of Divertimento Entertainments. \nPROGRAMME: \nJ.P Rameau – Chaconne from Castor and Pollux Suite\nFritz Kreisler String Quartet in A minor\nRobert Schumann String Quartet in A\, Op 41 no 3 \nRameau’s Chaconne from Castor et Pollux is from his opera where\ncharacters wrestle with fate\, love\, and moral dilemmas. Rameau’s music\nelevates these conflicts into a realm of expressive sophistication\,\nmaking this opera a cornerstone of 18th-century French music. \nAlthough overshadowed by Kreisler’s fame as a virtuoso and his\npopular salon pieces\, his string quartet is a substantial and rewarding\nwork. It combines melodic charm with structural sophistication\, offering\nperformers and listeners a glimpse of Kreisler’s depth as a composer\nbeyond the encore repertoire. \nSchumann’s String Quartet in A was composed in 1842\, which was known as\nSchumann’s “chamber music year\,” during which he composed three\nstring quartets\, a piano quartet\, and the celebrated piano quintet.\nAfter years devoted to piano works and songs\, Schumann immersed himself\nin the quartets of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven\, determined to master\nthe genre. The Op. 41 quartets were written in just five weeks and\ndedicated to Felix Mendelssohn. \n  \n

SUMMARY:30 November 2025: Philippa Mo @3.30
DESCRIPTION:After a highly successful solo concert in January 2024\, Calstock Arts is delighted to welcome back the virtuosa violinist\, Philippa Mo. \nBetween January and November 2025\, Philippa will be playing a series of concerts ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ in which the music of Johann Sebastian Bach will be highlighted\, tracing his progression as a composer from his earliest compositions written for solo violin to his later works. \nWe are very fortunate that Philippa will be playing the first and final concerts of the series at Calstock Arts. \nFurther information about the other concerts\, all of which will be performed at other venues in the south-west\, will be publicised at a later date. \nPhilippa studied at the royal Academy of Music\, London and at the Central Conservatory of Music\, Beijing. She performs extensively as a chamber musician and has given performances and live broadcasts worldwide\, including her acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall\, recitals at the Henry Moore Institute\, Leeds\, the Centre for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, the Deutsches Museum\, Munich\, and further afield at the Ankara International Music Festival\, the Lincoln Center\, New York and Ulaan Bataar\, Mongolia. \nAs a champion of contemporary music\, Philippa has worked closely with many leading British composers including Gabriel Prokoviev\, David Matthews\, John McCabe\, Cecilia McDowell and Jim Aitchison and has given premieres of their solo and violin duo works. \nPhilippa was appointed Senior Lecture in Violin at Leeds Conservatoire and was awarded Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2015. In 2020\, she won the Future Classic Women Awards held by the Women’s Radio Station. \nPhilippa delivers the Partita in D minor by Bach\, one of the most deeply contemplative of pieces with the astonishingly complex final movement the Chaconne\, a dance over a ground bass with 64 variations. Missy Mazzoli is a groundbreaking composer from New York who responds to the opening of the Chaconne in her mesmerising piece ‘Dissolve\, O my Heart’. Telemann casts an elegant Baroque path through his solo fantasias and is answered by the exciting young British composer Leo Geyer\, who wrote ‘Guarea‘ for Philippa to perform at the Barbara Hepworth Garden in St Ives. The music comments on the exotic wood and shapes of Hepworth’s most famous sculptures. To continue with an upward trajectory and idea of flight (of fancy\, of fantasy)\, we close with a tiny gem\, ‘Bumblebees’ by Cyril Scott. \nProgramme \nTelemann Fantasia in D major no.10\nMissy Mazzoli Dissolve O My Heart\nBach Partita in D minor BWV 1004 \nInterval \nTelemann Fantasia in Bb major no.1\nBach Cello Suite no.4 in Eb major BWV 1010 arr. for violin\nLeo Geyer Guarea\nScott Bumblebees \nListen to Philippa here & here

They breathe new life into early repertoire\, reimagined through a global lens that is as scholarly as it is spirited. Expect an immersive afternoon of rediscovered melodies\, reimagined traditions\, and spirited musical storytelling from one of the UK’s most adventurous early music ensembles. \nFounded in 2012 by soprano and director Ruth Hopkins\, K’antu Ensemble explore the lesser-known corners of early music\, weaving together the rhythmic vitality of Renaissance Europe\, the rich textures of South American dance music\, and the raw energy of traditional folk. Their name – derived from an ancient Peruvian and Bolivian musical tradition – hints at the ensemble’s fascination with the crosscurrents of global musical exchange. \nThe concert features repertoire from the Codex Martínez Compañón (c. 1782-1785) – a manuscript in nine volumes containing 20 musical scores\, the Cancionero de Palacio – a spanish manuscript of Renaissance music compiled between the mid-1470s and the beginning of the 16th century\, and Terpsichore (1612) – a compendium of over 300 instrumental dances arranged by German composer Michael Praetorius. This specially selected line-up of musicians bring lively interpretations of the works offering infectious rhythms\, haunting harmonies\, and a deep sense of connection to music’s timeless power to move and unite. \nK’antu’s dynamic performances have taken them to major UK venues including Bridgewater Hall\, King’s Place\, and St Martin-in-the-Fields. They have broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and toured internationally to Hungary\, Romania\, and Egypt with the British Council. Their albums Gusto and Dancing & the Divine have been featured on BBC Radio 3’s Early Music Show\, Late Junction\, and BBC Introducing. \n “Terrifically interesting and enjoyable…their performances are joyously individual” \nEarly Music Today Magazine \nHave a listen:  K’antu Ensemble: Geamparale – YouTube \n  \nRuth Hopkins: Voice / Renaissance Recorders / Baroque Violin \nJames Akers: Renaissance Lute / Baroque Guitar\nTymoteusz Jozwiak: Percussion                    \nPart One – England: Courts & Conflicts \nTrad. SUMMARY:2 May: The Prophecy Of Merlin: A Cornish Tale set to Music
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to an hour of fast-moving oral storytelling and achingly beautiful music; an epic adventure story by Mike O’Connor and Barbara Griggs. After the story there will be a break followed by a 45 minute talk on the history and folklore behind it. \nThe original Prophecy of Merlin was a Cornish-language document of the 11th century or earlier\, now lost. It was the basis of the Prophetia Merlini of about 1153 written by John of Cornwall\, a priest from St Germans in Cornwall. In cryptic language\, John criticised Saxon and Norman incomers and advocated British rule. The main historical sources for the tale are Merlin in Cornwall\, a Ph.D. thesis by Michael A. Faletra\, and Julyan Holmes’ An Dhargan a Verdhin: The Prophecy of Merlin. Athelstan’s ‘cleansing’ of the Cornish from Devon was recorded by William of Malmesbury in his De Gestis Regum Anglorum of 1125. \nMusic is integral to the tale and is exquisitely dovetailed into the performance. Melodies are linked with principal characters and events. Music supports action\, mood\, and emotion. An Dhargan\, Yn Termyn eus Passyes\, Dons Rys an Kam\, Kan Pibough Sagh\, Kri Bran\, Ilow Kosk\, and An Dasserghyans are by Barbara. Kynvan Bran and Medhel an Gwyns are by Mike. Kan an Alwedh is a unique tune from the time of John of Cornwall\, possibly from St Germans. \nSince the bronze-age\, bards have declaimed battle honours\, genealogies\, histories\, and stories\, both to entertain and also to endorse the positions of their rulers. By camp-fires and hearths\, families told tales to entertain and educate both adults and children. As late as the 19th century\, travelling storytellers in Cornwall told tales in return for bed and board. \nMike O’Connor OBE is a well-known storyteller\, with a deep knowledge of legend and folk tale\, and great skill with language. A bard of Gorsedh Kernow\, he is respected as a violinist\, songwriter\, and musicologist\, and known to many for his music for TV’s Poldark. He is responsible for the musicology\, folklore and history behind this tale. \nBarbara Griggs is a skilled and sensitive musician\, and a fine storyteller. She too is a bard as well as being a Gorsedh harpist. Her music has been described as having ‘breath-taking beauty.’ She is the expert on costume and custom\, and with Mike\, has worked to integrate words\, sound effects and music to high praise. \nMike and Barbara’s Return to Lyonesse won a British Award for Storytelling Excellence and Odysseus Dreaming was an acclaimed retelling of Homer.

SUMMARY:2 March: Marcelo Montes @ 3.30
DESCRIPTION:Calstock Arts are pleased to welcome to The Old Chapel\, Marcelo Montes a young virtuoso pianist from southern Portugal. \nHis playing is both exhilaratingly close to the edge and elegantly tender\, captivating and astounding audiences wherever he plays with an amazing repertoire (e.g. Bach\, Chopin\, Liszt\, Rachmaninov……). His focus and dedication are both incredible and inspiring. To be immersed in his playing is truly magical. Simply\, Marcelo is a musically imaginative and technical maestro of the piano. \nMarcelo is 33yrs old and lives in the Portuguese countryside 20km from the town of Tavira with his aunt’s family and his grandmother who is 100 years old. There are only 2 buses a day\, one in the morning and one returning in the evening. Most days he commutes to the Ingreja da Misericodia in the centre of Tavira where he practices and composes music on the church’s Bechstein grand piano. Next to the piano there is a donation box\, and visitors can listen to him play for as long as they like. Marcelo includes many Portuguese composers in his repertoire\, and on occasion\, he performs their music along with his own in public settings around the Algarve. \nMarcelo has visited Cornwall twice before\, performing his own and other classical composers’ works to sell out audiences at venues in the west of the county. March 2025 sees his return to Cornwall for a two week tour of the Duchy\, including an afternoon concert at Calstock Arts. This time he will be shining a light on Portuguese Classical Music and performing some of his own breathtaking virtuoso compositions. \nListen to Marcelo here & here \nPROGRAMME:\nAntónio Fragoso (1897 – 1918)\n• Peças do Séc XVIII\n• Aria\n• Menuet\n• Gavotte\n• Petite Suite\nMarcelo Montes\n• Heterónimos\n• Valsa para (Álvaro de Campos)\n• Arrieta em forma de alma\n• Valsa no. 2\n• Romance no. 1\n• Love \nINTERVAL \nCarlos Seixas (1704 – 1742)\n• Sonata no. 30\nLuís de Freitas Branco (1890 – 1953)\n• Preludio no. 4\nMarcelo Montes\n• A sós com a solidão\n• Valsa no. 3\n• Desencontros\n• Valsa do Adeus\n• Improviso

SUMMARY:15 February: Passacaglia Duo - Baroque pipes and Harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Passacaglia is an award-winning baroque chamber ensemble that performs in several guises ranging from a duo format to a multi-instrument line up\, performing music by some of the greatest composers of the eighteenth century\, as well as introducing audiences to new discoveries! With over 25 years of performing and recording experience\, Passacaglia brings the music of the baroque era to life with a range of exciting\, colourful and engaging programmes. \nWe welcome back Passacaglia\, who last performed for us in 2022\, but this time as a duo\, featuring Annabel Knight (recorders\, flute) and Robin Bigwood (harpsichord). \nAnnabel has established a successful freelance career which has taken her across the UK\, Europe\, America and the Middle East. As well as working with Passacaglia\, she is a member of the recorder quintet Fontanella\, which specialises in Renaissance and contemporary consort repertoire.  She is the founder and director of the popular Woodhouse Recorder Courses and runs the recorder department at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Annabel can also be heard playing on film soundtracks including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1\, Fantastic Mr Fox and Philomena. \nRobin won the Broadwood Harpsichord Competition in 1995 and nowadays enjoys a career combining solo recitals\, chamber music and orchestral continuo. He is a member of La Serenissima and the Feinstein Ensemble\, and is a visiting teacher of harpsichord at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Also active in the field of recording and music technology\, he works regularly as a producer\, writes for Sound on Sound magazine\, and founded the recording label Barn Cottage Records. \nThe programme of music the duo will perform is entitled ‘Made in Italy’.  Sensational and dramatic\, melodic and emotional\, Italian music took London by storm in 1711 with Handel’s wildly successful opera\, Rinaldo. The excitement and novelty of Corelli and Vivaldi’s instrumental styling were also catching on across the British Isles\, attracting a cohort of Italian musicians to settle in Britain and\, in the case of Francesco Barsanti\, absorb Scots culture into his own music. \n“Wonderfully passionate and detailed playing” Early Music Review \n“A performance of irrepressible joy” Gramophone \n\nHave a Listen: \nhttps://youtu.be/SBEILeoy67U?si=cSDgmSPeLRSp_kfC \nhttps://youtu.be/IE28Z3BHM-k \n\n Concert Programme\n\nGF Handel (1685 – 1759) Excerpts from Rinaldo (1711)\, Ouverture – Lascia ch’io pianga\, Allegro\nD Scarlatti (1685 – 1757) Sonata in A minor K 217\nA Corelli (1653 – 1713) Sonata in E major Opus 5\, No 11 (1700) – Preludio – Allegro – Adagio – Vivace – Gavotta\nF Barsanti (1690 – 1772) The Lass of Peattie’s Mill from A Collection of Old Scots Tunes\, 1742\nR Carr (fl 1684 – 87) Divisions on an Italian Ground from The Delightful Companion\, 1695\n\nINTERVAL \n\nF Giardini (1716 – 1796) Sonata V in G minor from Sei Sonate di Cembalo\, 1752. SUMMARY:19 January: Philippa Mo - ‘SUITE FANTASIA CAPRICE’ @ 3.30
\nTickets can be purchased for either CA concert individually or for both concerts at a reduced price (see below for details). \nIn the January concert\, Philippa will present some of the most expressive and colourful music written for single violin. To counter the dark and cold of January we will hear Bach’s Partita in E major shot through with sunlight\, balanced by his most famous and joyous first cello suite. There are elements of folk music in works by two British women composers Sally Beamish and Wendy Hiscocks and an exotic glimpse into the Brazilian rainforest in the piece ‘Pernambuco’ by Nigel Clarke. The eerie ‘Written in Sand’ by Icelandic composer Haflidi Hallgrimsson explores yet another sound world – and the muscular and virtuosic sonata by Prokofiev brings the journey to a close. \nProgramme \nTelemann Fantasia no.6 in E minor\nBach Partita in E major BWV\nHiscocks Caprice\nBeamish The Wise Maid\nClarke Pernambuco \nInterval \nTelemann Fantasia no.10 in D major\nBach Cello Suite no.1 in G major BWV 1007 arr. for violin\nHaflidi Hallgrimsson Written in Sand \nProkofiev Sonata for Solo Violin in D major Op.115 \nListen to Philippa here & here

SUMMARY:13 September: Stevens & Pound
DESCRIPTION:BBC Radio 3’s award-winning Delia Stevens and three time BBC Radio 2 Folk Musician of the Year nominee\, Will Pound\, deliver an unprecedented collaboration\, following the creative evolution of the classical composers inspired by folk. Driven by a maverick curiosity\, having stumbled upon a completely new world of sound\, they combine the traditional instruments of Pound’s melodeon and harmonica with the dizzying array of Stevens’ percussion\, and then let their imaginations run riot whilst paying homage to their respective musical roots.  \n  \nBoth at the forefront of their generation in their respective genres\, both musicians are renowned for innovation and collaboration:  \n  \n“percussion from Delia Stevens\, whose thoughtful\, insistent playing is crucial” \nThe Guardian \n  \nStevens’ work ranges from reimagining Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with percussion for Sky Arts\, presenting her own BBC Radio 3 series “Music and Machines” – exploring the future of music and AI following Artist Residencies at the Sage Gateshead and the University of Leeds – to performing Avner Dorman’s prolific 360° percussion concerto at Prague’s Last Night of the Proms with the Beethoven Academy Orchestra followed by a tour of Germany with the Lausitzer Philharmonie. She is an Associate Artist of the Royal Northern College of Music where she won the concerto competition and Gold Medal prize and is a double winner of the Royal Over-Seas League Award.  \n  \n“One of the world’s top harmonica players”  \nDaily Telegraph \nPound has created touring projects questioning Brexit – headlining Shrewsbury Folk Festival – featuring a traditional tune from every EU state and Through the Seasons: an exploration of the history of Morris Dance with Martin Simpson and world-leading story-teller Debs Newbold. His collaborations include Eddy Jay\, Jenn Butterworth\, Dame Evelyn Glennie\, Liz Carrol\, Martin Simpson\, Guy Chambers\, Concerto Caledonia\, Robbie Williams and The Hillsborough Charity Single. Appearances on BBC Breakfast\, BBC2\, Radio 2\, BBC Radio Scotland\, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards\, MTV\, Radio 1xtra to name a few. \n  \nIn 2024 Stevens & Pound collaborate with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Royal Northern College of Music and the youth-led global climate activism organisation Force for Nature to launch The Silent Planet to commemorate Holst’s 150th anniversary in a reimagination of his iconic Planet Suite with orchestra. Holst deliberately omitted Earth as “astrologically insignificant”. Stevens & Pound recognise this as an opportunity to write their own additional movement to the suite\, platforming the voices which are being silenced as our planet faces a climate crisis. Their composition will be orchestrated by Ian Gardiner and conducted by Clark Rundell.  \n  \nAs well as prolifically touring their duo concerts across the UK including Petworth\, Lichfield\, St Magnus International Festival (Orkney)\, Dunster and Swaledale Festivals\, they also look forward to touring Wales with Sinfonia Cymru in 2024 as concerto soloists performing their reimagination of Vaughan Williams’ iconic work The Lark Ascending\, orchestrated by Ian Gardiner in a climate-inspired programme called Regenerate alongside the violinist Simmy Singh.  \n  \nStevens & Pound are EarthPercent artists\, committed to splitting their royalties with climate change organisations.  \n
