Dante Quartet presents Hidden Gems

Overlooking the River Tamar by the spectacular Calstock Viaduct, The Old Chapel provides a magical and intimate setting for a concert of wonderful but rarely heard works. The meditative Adagio of Stanford’s quartet achieves Beethovenian heights, leading into a hilarious Irish jig disguised as a fugue. Stanford’s pupil Howells takes the English pastoral idiom and raises it to a new level, with textures reminiscent of Debussy (whose music Stanford had rejected as “modern stink”). French influence also pervades Szymanowski’s quartet, his sensuous sound-world fused with wild Polish folk themes.

The programme:
Stanford Quartet no 1 in G
Howells Quartet no 3
“In Gloucestershire”
Szymanowski quartet no 2
