Simon Armitage’s South West Coastal Walk
Award-winning writer Simon Armitage plans to walk from Minehead to Land’s End in September along the northern half of the SW Coast Path without a penny in his pocket. How will he pay his way? By giving poetry readings en route in village halls, churches, pubs, schools, galleries and living rooms in return for his board and lodgings.
But he’s taking a detour south, to read at Calstock Arts.
In Simon’s bestselling book ‘Walking Home’, he describes travelling the Pennine Way as a ‘modern troubadour’ in the wrong direction, from north to south, so that he could walk towards the Yorkshire village of Marsden where he was born.
Simon plans to set off from Minehead on the SW Coast Path just after the August Bank Holiday and hopes to reach Land’s End on September 17, having earned enough to pay his fare to the Isles of Scilly for a final reading.
Entrance is free, but tickets must be reserved at firstname.lastname@example.org, by phoning 01822 833183 or collected from Levine’s in Calstock.
Donations to Simon on the night will enable him to finish his walk.
